Norman (Odie) Lowe played four games with the New York Rangers from 1948-50, earning one goal and one assist.

He was an excellent playmaker and goal scorer who was best known in senior hockey circles.

The Winnipeg native played junior with the hometown Rangers and Canadians of the MJHL and the Lethbridge Native Sons of the AJHL. He led each league in assists once each and then scored 27 goals as a rookie pro with the EHL’s New York Rovers in 1948-49. After a cup of mocha with the Rangers, he helped them the Rovers win the EHL title.

Lowe spent a couple of more years in the minors before spending the last few years of his career in the senior Okanagan league. He starred for the 1956 Allan Cup champion Vernon Canadians and turned in his best performance with a league-high 61 goals and 114 points in 1956-57. Before retiring in 1961, he closed out his career in style by topping the 30-goal mark three straight years.

Odie coached the Canadians in the 1961-62 season and later coached the B.C. Junior Hockey League Vernon Essos for four seasons, leading them to the league title in 1971.

Said former Esso forward Eddie Johnstone: “Halfway through my second season with the Essos, I gotta call from Medicine Hat (Tigers) and I didn’t want to go. I was the first guy cut from their training camp two years in a row and didn’t know why. Odie pulled me aside and said, ‘if you’re going to pursue this you need to get out of here. When you get there, pursue your dreams.’ And I did.”

His son, Terry, who is also known as Odie, skated at countless Esso practices and went on to claim the BCJHL scoring title in the 1978-79 season with 154 points. The year before, Terry racked up 132 points with Taber Golden Suns of the Alberta League.

For the past decade, Odie Sr., 85, has put on his skates and dropped the puck for the Canadians

oldtimers Tuesday nights.

Cover: Vernon’s Jordan Burns, Alex Gillies and Curtis Lazar boosted the star-studded Watkin Motors Mustangs to the 2008 Coke Classic title, a threepeat for Vernon. Burns is a d-man with the Powell River Kings and has a scholarship locked up with Alaska-Fairbanks; Gillies is a sniper with the Salmon Arm SilverBacks and will play for the Michigan Tech Huskies next season; Lazar, a first-round Ottawa Senators’ draft, logged major minutes for Team Canada in the recent World Juniors and is a leading scorer with the Edmonton Oil Kings.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEOn behalf of the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association executive, staff, volunteers and members, I would like to welcome all players, coaches and families to the 43rd Pee Wee Tier 1 Coca-Cola Classic! This tournament has become a proud tradition in Vernon, and a highlight of the Vernon Winter Carnival held every year for 9 days in the 2nd week of February. This year’s theme is “Carnival of Superheroes”, and I couldn’t think of a more fitting term to describe the minor hockey experience. The countless hours that are dedicated to our youth by coaches, officials, administrators and hockey moms and dads, is truly heroic. It is through world class tournaments such as this, that all of your efforts are rewarded by the smiles on our kids’ faces. As an association, we embrace the principles of Respect in Sport, which reminds us to respect our coaches, volunteers, officials, the fans, and perhaps most importantly, our opponents. The history of this tournament is a proud one, and we are honored you have chosen Vernon and the Coca Cola Classic tournament as a place to build positive memories for your team and its supporters. Have Fun!Sincerely,Richard Frater, President Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association

Welcome to the 43rd Annual Coca-Cola Classic Invitational Pee Wee Hockey Tournament!

The Organizing Committee has once again worked diligently to bring players and visitors to Vernon to participate in this fun Winter Carnival tournament. We will have teams from Seattle, Prince George, Nanaimo, Calgary, Edmonton, Strathcona and Warman Saskatchewan.

For our out of town guests, I hope you will enjoy your stay in Vernon and take time to explore the scenic sites and tourist attractions in Vernon and the surrounding communities.

Good luck to all the players and coaches - let the games begin!

The Vernon Peewee Tier 1 Vipers play in the Greater Vernon Minor Hockey Association. They are affiliated in the OMAHA Tier 1 Division along with Kelowna, Kamloops and Prince George. Being a very young team of 17 players, made up of 10 first years and 7 second years, the goal of the team is to stay focused and work hard to remain competitive. Vipers have continued to improve their record from the beginning of the season.

The team style of play is to be strong, defensive and hard working. Team goals are being accomplished as the players strive to better their skill and team play both on and off the ice.

The Vipers won gold at the Penticton tournament and have worked hard to close the gap between themselves and their league opponents. They look forward to the challenge of the Coca Cola Classic tournament.

The Blackfoot Chiefs PW 1 team plays in the Calgary Minor Hockey Association. There are 13 teams competing in the Pee Wee 1 division and the Chiefs are currently tied for second place in the seeding round.

The team is comprised of 17 second year PeeWee players, of whom 12 are returning players from last year’s PW 1 team. This core group of 12 players have been together for the past six seasons. Already this year, the Blackfoot Chiefs have won the Springbank Jets AA Invitational Tournament and the Lethbridge AA Peewee Tournament, going undefeated in all of their games in each tournament.

The Blackfoot Chiefs play a skilled passing game – their style of play is characterized by excellent puck movement, discipline and a focus on systems. They are successful because of their skating skills, strong sense of teamwork and their ability to quickly move the puck.

The Chiefs coaching staff is led by Vern Olson. Mr. Olson and the balance of the coaching staff have been with the majority of the players on the team over the past 6 seasons. Head coach Vern Olson previously attended this tournament in 2010 as coach of another very successful Blackfoot Chiefs team.

Prince George has the only Per Wee Tier I program in Northern BC. Our closest competition is 500km away. We play in the OMAHA league and are off to a good start this year. We have 3 first year and 14 second year players. Last year’s Tier 1 team had a tough year with only 2 OMAHA wins. Most of the boys played together last year in Tier 2 and were successful in winning several tournaments. I would describe us as a quick, puck pursuing team that relies on hard work and support to be successful. My goal this year is; to develop all 17 players, to be “in” every game, and to be recognized as a tough team to play against.

Our coaches bring a good balance of knowledge and experience to the team. Two played in the WHL and two have competed at a national level in baseball and judo. As a staff, we understand what it takes to have success as an athlete and are focussed on the long term development of our players. We believe that participating in the 43rd Annual Coca Cola Classic would be one of the highlights of our season.

Sno-King Amateur Hockey Association (SKAHA) and Seattle Junior Hockey Association (SJHA), both based in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, have partnered to create Team Seattle, the Premier AAA Hockey in the Northwest. Founded in 1964 and 1974 respectively, SKAHA and SJHA identify themselves through a long standing tradition of excellence and are dedicated to the maintenance and dynamic growth of youth hockey in Washington State. SKAHA is celebrating its 50th Anniversary and was recently designated as a “Model Association” by USA Hockey, one of only 11 in the nation to receive this designation.

Team Seattle is part of the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association (PCAHA) in the Lower Mainland District of BC Hockey. We are mid-way through our season in flight 2 of the Peewee A Division with a 6-5-1 record. Flight 2 is very evenly matched as the 3rd through 8th ranked team in this 11 team flight are separated by only 7 points. Our Team is comprised of 16 second year players and 1 first year player, a majority of our team has been playing together for three years. Year by year our team has improved their play to gain higher tier level rank relative to the competition. This year we have climbed to flight 2, to be among the top 15 teams in the PCAHA League. Our players are enthusiastic about developing their skills and work persistently to raise their level of play.

We implement a high-pressure, puck possession style game with specific focus on skating, passing, and communication. As a team, we are required to travel internationally for many of our games, this fact, in addition to the rigours of game itself, require extraordinary discipline. This discipline incorporates itself into the fabric of our players; we pride ourselves on player support both on and off the ice to inspire their growth as a person. Our priorities focus on the development of our team to provide continuous improvement in the basic skills and instil a lifetime love for the game of hockey.

Strathcona Warriors Pee Wee AA is in Hockey Alberta zone 7. Our association is located east of Sherwood Park, AB. The league we play in is PWNHL. This

league consists of 31 teams from Edmonton and northern rural associations. Our current record in league standings is 10-0-1 with 88 GF and 25 GA. The

rooster consists of 8 forwards, 6 defense, and 2 goalies. We have 6 first year players and 10 second year players.

Strathcona Warriors’ season’s plan is built around skills and habit development. Our plan also includes a strong emphasis on life skills development for

our players. Our hope is that our process is successful and the result is a return to the Alberta Provincial Tournament. The Strathcona Warriors style of play

this season embodies a well balanced scoring attack with sound defensive structure and solid goaltending between two goalies. The head coach is Brad

MacGregor; assistant coaches are Colin Chorney, Shaun Kuny, Dean Baird, and manager is Shannon Wyatt.
