    RAVINGSBy Mike Hickey

    RIGH HING

I am surprised and pleased that with the minimal snow all andgenerally reezing temperatures, getting back out to the woodshas been a breeze. Although, I will never live long enough tonish the project, I have started pruning back the signicantover-growth that has been taking place. en or twenty ootspruce and r will try and grow two eet away rom a toweringsixty oot pine and although they can enjoy a ew years o liethey are doomed as they will never get enough sunlight to growmuch urther. So they sit there and compete with the pine ormoisture and nutrients only to end up as a dead twenty oostick that has no commercial or practical use other than to makeworking in the woods virtually impossible until you do get rido them.

Ive even got the missus helping out with this project. On the

days that she is able to join Te Jet and I on our regular walkin the woods, we stop at various spots along the trail and startcleaning up the dead debris that has accumulated over the yearsShe actually seems to get great delight in grabbing an old threeinch tree and kicking or pushing it too the ground and thendragging and piling it along the roadside.

So why would anyone tackle what is clearly a very long termproject when your personal long term is relatively short (oldthat is)?? Well, because it is darn good exercise and becauseit is the right thing to do. Even though there are no obvioussuccessors to continue this project aer our demise, taking careo things is just the right thing to do. Who knows, maybe oneo the grand-grand daughters might become a orester and loveusing axes and chainsaws. Te act is we can only control the

present (somewhat) and hope that what we value will somehowbe carried on by others.Like raising children, you do the very best job that you can and

hope like heck that things will turn out or the best. 800

We also use the various orms o learning: handson, visual, audio and learn that community and the child andschool are all connected. Besides our sponsors and teachers we

get help rom municipal employees and seniors. Many o ourgardens have become tourist attractions and develop a greatsense o pride and community.

Over 2.5 million marigolds in 15 years at 55 sites in the FundyRegion rom Sussex to St. Stephen by thousands o children havebeen planted. We also encourage everyone to plant marigoldsand more trees especially ever green trees so we will have greenyear round. Each tree takes tons o carbon out o the air andprovides us with the lie giving air we all need.

oN ouR coVERRING MEMoRIal BuRSaRy aNNouNcEDIn 1979 Barbara (Cox) Ring and Don Ring opened the RingGallery o Art on Prince William Street in Saint John andsuccessully ran it until Barbs untimely death in September o1982. Aer a brie closure, Don reopened the gallery in 1984and with the help o Sheila Ross continued to run a unique andwell respected business until Sheila became ill in 1997.

Don and Barb were well respected and played an integral partin the arts community. Trough the gallery, they promoted andhelped many young, gied and up and coming artists spreadtheir wings. Over the years o running the gallery throughaccess, but mostly due to good taste, Don and Barb accumulateda very large collection o very ne works o art. When Donpassed away in 2009 aer a period o ailing health, their sonStephen was le with the collection.

Aer many hours o discussion with his wie Pamela it wasdecided that something must be done to honor his parentsmemory. Tis year (2012) marks the 30th anniversary o Barbsdeath and so, with the help o Peter Buckland, a large sale washeld to dispose o the bulk o the works in the collection. Now, rom the proceeds o the sale, a und has been set up with

Te Greater Saint John Community Foundation. Te Barbara &

Don Ring Memorial Bursary will assist a deserving student romSaint John High and Harbour View High wishing to pursue postsecondary studies in the arts. Te rst awards will be presentedin June to a 2012 Graduate.

    MUSINGSBy Debbie Hickey

GaMER . . . NoOne o my younger co-workers expressed a little surprise at ourrecent purchase o an Xbox 360 Kinect game system. Guess Ididnt seem the gamer type. Likely because in large part, Imnot. But exercise using a game system is SO much more un thanstanding around doing jumping jacks or deep knee bends. Withthe Xbox I can leap, duck, stretch and bend while gaining pointswhite water raing or playing rallyball (similar to handball). Iam impressed at the realism, particularly with the white waterraing one. We have not yet purchased any additional gamesbeyond those that came bundled with the system, as I preer todo a little research rst. Tis is an exercise tool or me, so I amnot looking or any shoot em up/beat em up kinda games. Stillthere are a couple, such as Fruit Ninja and Junk Fu, that soundboth energetic and un.

Tere was an interesting article recently on a study o elderlyadults and exercise that indicated there are mental/cognitivebenets to exercising in a virtual world. Te seniors who werecybercycling (i.e. had their stationary bicycles equipped witha virtual reality screen that had them cycling through variousoutdoor scenes or running virtual races) not only lowered theirrisk o mental decline but actually improved in areas such asdecision-making and multi-tasking. Plus they had more un!

Tis time last year Ossekeag Publishing commenced ourwalking challenge. I cannot speak or any o the other memberso the Ossekeag team, but once the 13 week challenge ended I

just kept right on going. I was curious how many steps and howar that would be or the past year so I did a little calculating. In the past 52 weeks I have walked a grand total o 5,701,918

steps, which i the rule o thumb that 10,000 steps = 5 miles iscorrect, is about 2850 miles. I I were walking across Canada

that would put me just aboutto the B.C. border. I haventreduced my walking, but amendeavouring to add someadditional exercise to my dayand the Xbox is part o thatgoal. But I wont be postingany o the action photos tomy Facebook page! 801
