BOWLING NEWSPage 2 January 30, 2014

Chuck PezzanoDean of Bowling Writers, PBA & USBC Hall of Fame

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

IDLE BOWLING ThOUGhTSBowling is one of the most documented of sports, since

it became organized. We have almost all the records of what transpired from the time the American Bowling Con-gress was formed in 1895 and the Women’s International Bowling Congress in 1916 and the other bowling groups founded later.

There are voluminous tournament records to tell about the events that followed the first ABC tourney in 1901.

But we only have dribs and drabs of what bowling was like in the earlier years, and every now and then a new tidbit turns up. Stories about the Civil War often reveal bowling notes. For instance, in 1861, an artillery group was shipped from Petersburg, VA to Norfolk, VA. The report noted, “Af-ter they stepped off the train in Norfolk, some of the men camped in tents, while others bunked in an old tenpin al-ley.” Imagine, an “old” tenpin alley way back in 1861.

In 1864 a popular resort in Kittrell’s Springs, NC was utilized as a hospital. After the war, and after various uses, it was reopened in 1872 as a vacation haven. The owner announced, “Pleasure seekers may find here a healthy, pleasant, quiet retreat. We have a large ballroom and good music, with Croquet, Billiards, Ten-Pins, Shooting Gallery and Bathing.”

So, bowling was alive and well, and an attraction, at least a century and a half ago.

*****Butch Soper, had one of the best years of his long part

of a century pro career in 1994 at age 45, including a 300 game on TV. Soper comes up big for the little guys. At 5’6” and less than 150-lbs. he rolled that high, hard one down the lane. When he first started bowling he was so small he had to use both hands to roll the ball. He preceded the two handed stars by more than 20 years.

*****The nightmare that haunts all top bowlers is that their

last big game will be their last big game.*****

The Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum is a firm fixture in Texas. But before that site was settled upon, a total of 31 cities in 17 states expressed interest in being the home of one the finest of all sports museums in St. Louis, quarter- backed by Nick Mormando.

*****Nothing shortens a long bowling story more quickly than

the unexpected arrival of the bowler who unknowingly was the central figure of the former long story.

*****Joe Hutchinson, one of the most popular bowlers on

tour over the years, and also one of the most observant and vocal, points out, “Though bowling seems to be the same, there are constant changes in rules, in equipment, both personal and in the bowling center, and in techniques. In fact, if you stayed away from bowling 20 years or so, the only thing you would recognize when you came back would be the excuses.”

*****If you have a bowler in your league who still shines up

his or her bowling ball after every shot, don’t make a big deal out of it. Just ask them what else they got for their birthday.

*****An older league bowler won the admiration of all the

other bowlers in his league when he went back to school to study languages and math and through great sacrifice in time and money, won advanced degrees. He felt those 10 years of night school were well worth it when he was the only team captain able to put his team’s lineup down in Latin and keep score in Roman Numerals.

And he continued to feel great about the whole thing until that fateful day when he walked into the bowling cen-ter and on one set of lanes was an engineer’s league, right next to the doctor’s circuit, which was next to the priest’s league.

*****When you mentioned the late Billy Hardwick in the early

1960s, it was usually followed by a laugh. He was so bad in the beginning that first he was advised, then urged, then begged to quit for his own good. He didn’t earn a dime the first year, and the odds seemed to be that he wouldn’t earn a dime in the next 50 years. But he stuck to it, earned mil-lions and millions of dimes, and enough titles to be elected to both the ABC and PBA Halls of Fame. He also was voted 12th all-pro.

So never laugh too easily and too hard. Often, today’s clown, laughing stock, or unknown is tomorrow’s hero. And it’s the last laugh that counts most. Hardwick was truly a man for all bowling seasons.

Citrus Belt’s darron PeTers Is WCST Bowler

of the yearby Frank Weiler &

Therese Lloyd

TEMECULA — Darron Peters is West Coast Senior Tour (WCST) 2013 Bowler of the Year. He had one heck of a year winning three titles (South Point in March, Fon-tana in June, Laughlin in July) two seconds and two third place finishes. His three titles tied for the most Tour wins last year.

In addition to winning the most tournaments for the year Darron was the WCST top point winner (1020) and top money winner ($4,700.00).

Darron prefers Storm and Roto Grip equipment using a Roto Grip Manic for his South Point win, a Storm Lights Out for his Fontana win, and a Roto Grip Wrecker to win in Laugh-lin. He features these balls in his Rollin Rock pro shop.

Darron is a Storm and Roto Grip staffer and is grateful for the opportunity to be associat-ed with such great companies. He told us that Storm person-nel are like family. They are always available and very helpful.

Darron wants to thank his wife CATHERINE for her support and is appreciative for the help he has received from JIM CALLAHAN (Storm), ERNEST GOEDICKE (Roto Grip), CHRIS SCHLEMER (Roto Grip), and LEE UPP (Storm).

This year could be even better. Darron is a ten year PBA member with two region-al titles and plans to compete regularly on the PBA 50 (Se-nior) Tour. Watch out Walter Ray.

RALPH MORTON’S FUN-TIME NO-TAP SENIOR DOUBLES TOURNAMENT RECORD-SMASHING JANUARY by Gwen Manguso

LASVEGAS — We did it again! The 25th Fun-Time Senior No-tap Doubles Tournament held January 13-15 at The Orleans Hotel & Casino bowling center breaks another record! The best no-tap tourna-ment around with the best senior bowlers keeps getting better! Generous prize funds are awarded for the Sunday blind draw, Monday thru Wednesday tournament play, Tuesday Singles and All Events. Hope you didn’t miss it.

The early bird blind draw Sunday, January 12th, drew a record 275 bowlers. Perhaps it is the mystery of not knowing who your partner is until the results are posted or the 3-6-9 format or the appeal of winning a free entry or just having fun trying to win a share of the record prize fund. Terry Isbell (300,300,298) & Gloria King (231) bowled their way to 1st. Finishing out the top five were: Roger Graham/Ruth Ramsey, Doug White/Manuel Herrera, BJ Chovanec/Lisa Isbell & Fred Bello/Erma Ransom. No divisional play was necessary because the pairings were computer generated to maintain team averages within 10-12 pins. A record number (21) 300’s were bowled.

Monday officially kicked-off regular tournament play which expanded to 3 daily squads and 4 balanced divisions (100% of 220 handicap) combining scores to form a single day event with a record number of 520 bowlers. Mike & Donna Gude won 1st place in Div 1. Sarah Moon & Terrie Emerick captured 2nd with a 3-pin lead over Pauline Janak and Gloria Billo. Petra & Ray Rosales and Ethel Bond/Helen Alexander rounded out the top 5. Div 2: Sherry Cunningham & Janice Blume took first place over 2nd place team Bob/Gerry McAnelly. They were followed by Roger Sears/Joyce Reynolds, Margie/Gilbert Barnett & Brenda/Charlee Kist. Div 3: Joe Migliaccio & Karen Lyons took first place by a wide margin. Earline Edwards/Paul Gomez snagged 2nd just 4 pins ahead of Charlie Baldwin/Patricia Butler. Dave/Darlene Schneider captured 4th pursued closely by the DeWaal brothers, Archie & Stanley. Div 4: Jim Barden/Tom Larsh burned up the lanes for a 1st place win. Tied for second were Ken Smelker/Mitzi Taniguchi and Dennis Suntum/Dave Schneider. Trent and Stephen Moyer squeaked into 4th place with a one pin lead over Donald/Teddi Vesey. Fourteen bowlers scored a 300.

Tuesday’s bowlers took their skills to the lanes. Div 1: Mike & Donna Gude kept their 1st place position above Robin Minor/Diane Tobin. Pauline Janak/Gloria Billo protected their spot in the Top 5 pur-sued by Deloris Tanabe/Dick Elgar and Paul/Jean Marshall. Div 2: Bob/Gerry McAnelly secured 1st place with a 15 pin lead over Sherry Cunningham/Janice Blume. Rounding out the Top 5 were Irene Villalobos/Mary Jane Brust, Annette Gudson/Linda Mitchell and Ron Miller/Robert Barnes. Div 3: Tom/Amelia Kutz bowled up a storm locking in 1st place. The teams of Hamp Bank/Erma Ransom, Amy/Steve Gottlieb, Patrick Hirano/Reynold Doi and Stanley/Archie DeWaal wrapped up the top five. Div 4: Joe Migliaccio paired with Jane Emmons bowled their way to 1st place ahead of Steve Van Winkle/Marvin Pettiford. A tight battle rounded out the Top 5 as Russ Valentine/Steve Gottlieb squeaked their way past Daryl Moorhead/Larry Turman and Ed/Carol Burke. There were (22) 300’s!

BURBANK — Here we are, nearly at the end of January! How does that happen anyway? Next thing you know, Val-entine’s Day will be here. Love will be in the air and choco-late in the box. One of life’s cruel jokes is when we resolve to lose that excess weight and six weeks into our battle with sweets (when we are truly vulnerable) along comes that belovedly dreaded, heart shaped box. Chocolate is my vice, yes, but also my BFF. I come with directions: ‘When crabby and unmanageable, insert chocolate. Adjusting Carol ManciniEditor’s note: As the new year dawned, many of our readers re-solved to improve. During the past few weeks we have begun a crusade to help them learn how to do exactly that. Carol: It seems to me that one of the biggest reasons many bowl-ers never learn to adjust is that it’s so complicated. How and when do you adjust; what do you adjust? Can you simplify it?Steve: Sure. It’s as easy as one-two-three.Carol: Really?Steve: It’s a process anyone can learn. Step one is simply to warm up until you can roll consistent shots.Carol: You do that anyway.Steve: Exactly. Number two is to see where the ball goes.Carol: Nothing new there either.Steve: Nope. It’s what you do next that’s important.Carol: And that is.......?Steve: Step number three is to “listen” (metaphorically speak-ing) to the ball. Carol: Where do we go to learn to speak “Bowling Ball?”Steve: Right here. Every shot you roll sends a message back to you. You need to pay attention.Carol: You’ve lost me.......Steve: There are only three basic messages a ball can tell you; “I went too far right.”, “I hit the target.” or, “I went too far left.”Carol: That’s simple enough.Steve: Remember, the more consistent a bowler is, the clearer that message becomes. How a bowler reacts to those messages is what separates elite from average bowlers.Carol: How so?Steve: When a ball doesn’t do what’s expected, average bowlers panic; elite bowlers become curious. Average bowlers compen-sate; elite bowlers adjust. Carol: What’s the difference?Steve: Compensating is a random change to a delivery which tries to force the ball to do what you want. It leads to inconsis-tency and low scoring potential. Adjusting, on the other hand, is deliberate and repeatable. The delivery is modified one skill at a time so that results are predictable. This is why elite bowl-ers are so successful.Carol: Can you be a little more specific?Steve: Sure. Let’s do some adjusting from a right-hander’s per-spective. You deliver your first shot and the ball says, “I went too far right.” First, ask yourself these two questions. “Did I make a good delivery?” and, “Did the ball roll over its target?”Carol: Got it! You can’t adjust anything unless you answer both questions, “Yes.”Steve: Correct. Now, you just made a good delivery but the ball did not go where you expected. What do you do? After shooting your spare, say to yourself, “I need the next shot to go farther to the left.” Carol: I never thought of it that way before.Steve: Since I promised to keep things simple, I’m only going to discuss the most common adjustment. It solves most problems the average league bowler encounters.Carol: And that is.....?Steve: The #1 adjustment every bowler should know: moving the stance to the right or left. Using the targets imbedded in the lanes....Carol: You mean the arrows, right?Steve: Not necessarily. A target can be an arrow, one of the dots preceding the arrows, a particular board between the ar-rows, or even a three-board area the bowler is comfortable aim-ing for. For a bowler who uses a target, moving the stance left brings the ball’s trajectory to the right; moving the stance to the right moves the ball to the left. In our example, the bowler wants the ball to end up farther left, so he/she should move the position of their stance to the right while aiming for the same target. Adjusting doesn’t get any simpler than that.Carol: Can I add something to that?Steve: It’s your paper.Carol: I’ve been told that for every two boards you move to the right or left, a bowler should move their target one board in the same direction.Steve: You are absolutely right! If the ball is hooking more be-cause the lane has dried a bit, that advice gets the ball back onto some oil. Good call, Carol. Now, there are other things a bowler......Dean: Time! Carol: Well, that’s all we have room for today, folks. Join us again next week when we will cover some of those “other things.”Comments or questions? Email them to us at: [email protected]

Jesus Andazola shows off his 300 ring for his perfecto shot on 11/29/13 at Del Rio Lanes in the Friday Vegas League.

“To win a major championship and player of the year in the same week? That’s pretty tough to beat,” he grinned.

Malott advanced to the title match with a 205-202 victory over Barrett, the 2013 PBA World Champion, in a contest where strikes were hard to come by late in the game. Barrett failed to convert the 2-8-10 split in the seventh frame, giving Malott the edge. But Malott was unable to take advantage, leaving four con-secutive 10 pins to keep Barrett in the match. Needing a strike on his first shot in the 10th frame to win, Barrett also left a 10 pin.

In the second match, Dan MacLelland made a fatal mistake when he left the 4-6-7-10 split in the fourth frame and failed to convert. Malott struck on eight of his final nine shots to race away with a 248-199 win to end MacLelland’s hopes of becom-ing the first Canadian to win a PBA Tour title.

In the opening match, MacLelland, a fifth-year PBA player making his seventh career television appearance, eliminated defending Tournament of Champions winner Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 259-211. Weber, a 37-time PBA champion who was making his 133rd television appearance, made two uncharacter-istic mistakes – failing to convert the 3-10 split in the first frame and missing the 3-6-10 in the fifth – and MacLelland answered with a string of eight strikes to end the 51-year-old Weber’s bid for a record 11th PBA major title.

PBA coverage continues on ESPN next Sunday at 4 p.m. ET with the PBA Super Clash featuring a showdown match between 2011-12 PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., vs. newly-named 2012-13 PBA Player of the Year Jason Bel-monte of Australia followed by a CP3 PBA Remix at 5:30 p.m. Coverage of the 2014 PBA League season begins on ESPN on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 3 p.m. ET.

Barbasol and PBA Announce “Strike a Pose” Contest

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - Barbasol and the Professional Bowl-ers Association (PBA) have teamed up to create the 2014 Bar-basol and PBA “Strike a Pose” contest. Contestants will submit their best “strike celebration pose” on the Barbasol Strike a Pose Facebook page. Submissions can also be posted to Instagram and Twitter using #PBAstrikeapose. The contest will run through March 26 when the winners will be decided by a panel of judges made up of Barbasol and PBA members.

Five winners will receive a year’s supply of Barbasol. A grand-prize winner will receive a Barbasol PBA Prize pack, which includes a year’s supply of Barbasol, a Barbasol Motown Muscle bowling jersey and custom Barbasol bowling ball.

“Barbasol is very excited to be able to partner with the PBA on the Strike a Pose promotion,” said Dustin Abels, Vice Presi-dent-Business Development. “This is a fantastic way to encour-age bowlers to hit the lanes, have some fun, and be able to win great prizes!” This season Barbasol has expanded its partnership with the PBA with the addition of becoming the jersey sponsor of the PBA League’s Motown Muscle. This contest is just another asset of that expanded partnership.

“Everyone knows the finishing position in any bowler’s form isn’t at the foul line but it’s their reaction to a big strike,” PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said. “The PBA is proud to partner with Barbasol on this fan promotion allowing everyone to get into the exciting action.” For more information on the “Strike a Pose” contest please visit pba.com and Barbasol.com.

DOWNEY — The LOS ALTOS TROPHY team with 4 solid 600’s engraved their name —THIRD ROUND WIN-NER!

Game One ended up in a tie 760/760. Game Two was a game of carry, no carry, in favor of LOS ALTOS. Game Three became a game of now or never for THREAD-WORKS. The deadly taps left 10 pins that just sucked up their bellies and let the balls roll right on by. LOS AL-TOS won big, 4 1/2 to 1/2. They couldn’t have been more consistent. Anthony Burrell 607, Matt Jones 619, Zack Jellsey 619 and Derek Lee 622. GUYS—YOUR ON THE BOARD!

SYSCO stirred the pins, added some hot-sass and ground up the KEYSTONE foursome 5/0, which was al-most good enough to make the board. Only one game off. Close ain’t a win!

This coming Monday the league gets a clean start, a new pattern, and a shot at winning round four. With three of the best teams already seated, it’s an open opportunity. Last week, there were more splits converted than 7 pins! By actual count I saw 12 splits (of all sizes and shapes) swooshed off the deck in the first game alone.

Round three is over! Lets pat a few backs! Big games for Kurt Arakaki (279) and Greg Neuer (278) in the Ad-visors Pot. Side-pots looked familiar! Eddie VanDaniker 236, Eric Snow 237, and Bobby Campagnale 270.

Ending round three, the league was averaging 196. Last week I promised to do research on how leagues av-erage. I printed a stat sheet for 40 leagues. The result? 51% of the bowlers bowled above their average and 49% bowled below their average!!!! (What a waste of time!)

Football has the SUPER BOWL. The Ebonite League has the SUPER BOWLERS!
