FROM THE OGLE OFFICE

Dear friends, You will read in the Tablet this week about the

death of one of the truly remarkable priests in the history of

the Diocese of Brooklyn, the Rev. Mons. James A. Hunt, at

the age 88. Monsignor Hunt was born on the feastday of Our

Lady of Mount Carmel, July 16, in 1929, graduated from our

parish school in 1943, and his father was a sacristan in the

church for many years. Jim Hunt was ordained in 1955 and

served with distinction in many different fields as his great

talents were recognized and tapped by a succession of bish-

ops. He taught in the minor seminary, served as an assistant

superintendent of Catholic schools, and was among the earli-

est to serve as an Episcopal Vicar. I was fortunate that he was

the vicar who supervised me in my first assignment as a

priest in St Margaret Mary parish. Upon completing his term

he eventually became the pastor of the historic parish of St

Peter Claver in Bedford-Stuyvesant, when the name of that

neighborhood was still synonymous with the challenging

social realities of poverty and crime. He served there proudly,

and then moved on to an equally difficult assignment in

Brownsville at Our Lady of the Presentation. After his

“retirement” he became a missionary in the West Indies for

many years, only returning when his health demanded quick-

er access to medical treatment. One of the highlights of our

170th Parish anniversary Mass in 2011 was his concelebrating

with us. He has resided for several years at the Bishop Mu-

gavero Priest Retired Priest Residence at Douglaston where

he lived up to his death on Monday, January 23. Monsignor

Jim Hunt was at the same time a gentleman of the old school,

yet eager to be current with the mind of the Church and the

needs of the People of God. We can be proud of his roots in

our parish and we pray the Lord to give him the reward of his

goodness and eternal pardon and peace. May his good exam-

ple and intercession help today’s Mount Carmel parishioners

to promote vocations to the priesthood and religious life, so

there may be many more future Fr Jim Hunt’s to serve the

Church as well as he did. Requiescat in pace.

God love you,

Msgr. Sean G. Ogle

Requiescat in pace. Dios te cuide, Mons. Sean G. Ogle

PARISH BULLETIN BOARD PRAYER OF THE WEEK

The Virgin Mary was a very young, unwed teenager when she became pregnant with the Christ Child. Loving Father, Creator of all life, you have known us from all eternity. Before you ever formed us in our mother's wombs you knew us. Teach us to foster proper attitudes about all your creation... the unborn, the elderly, the handicapped, the terminally ill. Help us to see anew the miracle and sacredness of all life and give us a greater awareness of our responsibility toward this gift from you. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
