PRAYER OF CONFESSION (Unison)

Great God, we confess our weariness. We grow faint with our busyness. We have no energy to help the powerless. We look for strength and find exhaustion. We do not wait for you. Merciful God, forgive us, and lead us back to you, for in you our strength is renewed. Fill our voices with your praise, that all might hear! (Continue with silent prayer.)

Mother’s Day Offering

MOTHER'S DAY OFFERING MAY 13, 2018 Presbyterian Communities Celebrate 60th Anniversary

One way First Presbyterian Church keeps the 5th Commandment, "Honor your Father and your Mother," is by giving annually to the Mother's Day Offering. This ministry has proven to be one of the most successful undertakings of our churches in South Carolina. Today, over 900 older adults reside at five communities across the state. The closest one to us is in Florence. Your gift will be used exclusively to provide charitable care for those residents at Presbyterian

Communities who have outlived their life savings. You can help ensure they can stay in the only home they know. You will find cards with a blue vase and yellow tulips at each entrance that will give you more information.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

“Where Love Makes the Difference” Thank You

Thank you for the cards, calls, and prayers. When my mom and Jack each had a stroke, I felt like God

picked me up, giving me the strength and guidance to continue.

I miss my mom and every day I thank her for molding me into who I am today. I thank God to still have

Jack as hGod helps him to recover. His progress is slow, but there is progress.

I am so thankful my sister, Christie Copeland, has been my rock. She picked us up and carried us through

this very sad time. Please continue to keep us in your prayers as we follow God’s plan.

Thank you and God bless you, Cori Gaddy

Christa’s Corner…

Blessings,

Christa

A Word from the Associate Pastor

FPC Family,

It is with delight that I share that on Thursday, April 26th, at Early Sabbath, we will

commission two new Stephen Ministers, Rod Madert and Eric Rice. They have spent 50

hours in training to become Stephen Ministers, and they are now ready to provide

confidential one-on-one care to members of our congregation and community who would

like someone to walk alongside them through some life’s challenging journeys. As we

commission Rod and Eric, we will also be recognizing Rev. Anthony (Tony) Larson and

Mickie Smith from Trinity Presbyterian Church, who have completed the Stephen Ministry

training alongside Rod and Eric. While Stephen Ministry only allows us to commission our

own church members, we will be celebrating with Trinity Presbyterian Church that their

pastor and an active lay member have also completed this training. Trinity is considering

becoming a Stephen Ministry congregation or having some other kind of lay caregiving

ministry, and this training will provide them with a good start in those endeavors.

It has been a blessing to partner with Trinity Presbyterian in the Stephen Ministry training.

As Presbyterians, we see ourselves as a “connectional church” and that means that we

believe that we are at our best when we work together, share resources, and serve in mission

together. This joint training has been a way for us to share of our time and resources with

Trinity, and we have grown and benefited from the relationships we have formed with

people in their congregation. Their pastor, Tony, and I have spent a little bit of time

dreaming about how our congregations might continue to partner with one another, share

resources, and do education and mission together. In what greater ways can we serve God

by sharing together in ministry?

On another note, I would like to share with you that registration for our second annual

women’s retreat is opening at the PW Women’s Luncheon on Tuesday, May 1. Last year

was a great success and the women who came all had a wonderful time. We believe that

this year will be no different. If you register in May, you get the Early Bird price. The price

will increase on June 1. Sign up soon to guarantee yourself a spot and to get in on the

cheaper price! Our speaker this year will be Rev. Rachel Young, who serves as the

Associate Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Clear Lake Presbyterian Church in Clear Lake,

TX (right next to NASA). She is a member of my pastoral colleague group and loves

leading women’s retreats, particularly ones that address matters of prayer and spirituality.

Keep your eyes posted for the theme of the retreat that the leadership will decide at their

May meeting. If you have any questions about registration, please direct them to Amy

Warner or Beth Campbell. If you have any further questions or comments about the

women’s retreat, you may direct them to any member of the women’s retreat planning

committee, which this year includes: Jane Bartel, Beth Campbell, Glenda Connolly,

Jamie Deitrick, Beverly Jones, Dona Lee, Amy Warner, and me.

There is a new shingles vaccine on the market. It is to replace Zostavax. It is called Shingrix. Zostavax

was only 51% effective to protect you from shingles. The new vaccine is in the mid -to high 90%

effective. It will also protect you from the post neuralgia pain following shingles. It will last longer than

Zostavax. Shingrix is 85% effective, after four years. Zostavax has to be given every 4 years. Shingrix

vaccine must be given, then another vaccine injection given 2-6 months later, after the first. Even those

that have gotten the Zostavax vaccine are recommended to get two doses of the Shingrix vaccine.

Join the FPC CHANCEL CHOIR this summer and sing a new song to the Lord!!

There are only three choir rehearsals during the summer.

June 13; July 25; August 22

Rehearsals are on Wednesdays from 6:45-8:00 PM.

Come to the first rehearsal on June 13 at 6:45 PM in the third floor choir room.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.

After a break from these responsibilities, we may see Susan from time to time substituting for

our services. Playing the organ will always be a special part of her life. For that we are

grateful! There will be a reception, hosted by the choir, on Sunday May 27 following the

11:00 service. We hope you can come to the Fellowship Hall to express gratitude for the

music Susan has made for us. If you would like to contribute to a Love Offering on her behalf,

please do so through our financial office.

By now you may well have heard about another transition on

our staff. Susan Cadwell, our exceptional organist for the

last nine years, has decided to take a break from her work.

While playing the organ is her passion, Susan needs to be

more available to spend time with family, including travel to

other parts of the state. She says that working with our most

talented and supportive choir has truly been a pleasure.

Accompanying Brown Bradley from organ bench has been a

great delight, she adds.

We are looking for volunteers to facilitate the Divorce Care support group. You will be able to intern with

Terry and Ken Ashworth starting Sept. 11th and ending Dec. 4th. If you are a divorced member of our

church, we hope you will consider this wonderful ministry. It serves the community of Myrtle Beach and

changes many lives. In this confidential support group, you can help those that are feeling the ravages of a

divorce. Feelings of anger, betrayal, guilt, and the many emotions that are involved with a divorce. Each

session has a topic that is shown on a DVD followed by discussion and support Many completing the 13

weeks of sessions said it truly changes their lives and their children’s lives. If you are looking to help

others, please consider the divorce care support group. We have had it at our church for over 20 years.

Please contact Denise Ellis, RN BSN, for an interview at 843-448-4496.

THANK YOU

We Appreciate the Offer, BUT...

We Are Out Of Storage Room!

While we appreciate all those wanting to help with donations

of desks, musical instruments, technology, office equipment,

medical equipment, etc., we really have no room for storage.

Because of the consolidation of the two campuses we are

beginning to take inventory of the needs of the new buildings

equipment and furniture. If you feel that you have something

that would be helpful, please first speak with Steve Moore at

843-448-4496 rather than dropping off your items

unannounced at the church. Thank you!

Dear Friends, It has taken me this long to figure out how to convey our deep appreciation for all of you and your generosity to my family and I am sure that my words are insufficient. Please know that the reception, the love offering, and countless other gestures of your abundant kindness have meant so much to Mary, Perry, and me. Mary and I have made a commitment to set aside a portion of the love offering for Perry as a gift to him from you for his future. We will hold all of you in prayer and we rely on God's faithful providence to guide us and keep us in the days ahead. FPC is a place and community where Love Makes The Difference. It certainly has in my life and in the life of my family. It has been a distinct joy and honor to serve alongside you in ministry. I am excited about all the places you'll go and all the lives you'll change to the Glory of God through our LORD Jesus Christ. I'll close with these words from a benediction that I have often shared with you at the close of worship. It comes to me from a beloved and wise teacher of mine. May these words offer you some joy and assurance of God's love. Beloved, May joy and nothing less find you along the way. May you be blessed. O, may you continue to be a blessing. And may love's own light - may love's own crucified, risen light guide me and you and countless others all the way home. Amen

In Christ, Cam

*SONG OF PRAISE “Come Thou Fount (I Will Sing)” -C. Tomlin, T. Tobinson

(Chorus) How Your kindness yet pursues me How Your mercy never fails me 'Til the day that death shall lose me I will sing oh I will sing

Come Thou Fount of ev'ry blessing. Tune my heart to sing Thy grace, Streams of mercy never ceasing; call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it mount of Thy redeeming love.

Here I raise my Ebenezer. Hither by Thy help I come. And I hope by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger, wand'ring from the fold of God. He to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

(Repeat Chorus)

Oh to grace how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be. Let Thy goodness like a fetter, bind my wand'ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart Lord take and seal it. Seal it for Thy courts above.

(Repeat Chorus 2 times)

(Ending) Prone to wander Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here's my heart Lord take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above. Here's my heart Lord take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above.

PROMISE OF FORGIVENESS Leader: Hear the good news! If we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. People: So we also must consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Jesus Christ. Leader: Friends, believe the good news! People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Isaiah 40:21-31; Mark 1:29-31, 35-39

Isaiah 40:21-31 Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God”? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Mark 1:29-31, 35-39 As soon as the left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them... In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, “Everyone is searching for you.” He answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do.” And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

STEPHEN MINISTER RECOGNITION & COMMISSIONING

Rod Madert and Eric Rice, First Presbyterian Church, Myrtle Beach

Rev. Anthony Larson and Mickie Smith, Trinity Presbyterian Church

SERMON RESPONSE “Christ Has Risen While Earth Slumbers” – SUO GAN;

words by J. Bell & G. Maule Christ has risen while earth slumbers; Christ has risen where hope died, as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied. Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer; let the world confirm the rumor: Christ is risen, God is here!

Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save; Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grave. Christ has risen for disciples huddled in an upstairs room. He whose word inspired creation can’t be silenced by the tomb.

OFFERTORY “Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace)” – J. Houston, J. Myrin All these pieces broken and scattered, In mercy gathered, mended and whole. Empty handed but not forsaken. I've been set free, I've been set free. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. Oh, I once was lost but now I am found. Was blind but now I see. Oh, I can see You now, oh, I can see the love in Your eyes. Laying Yourself down, raising up the broken to life. You take our failure, You take our weakness. You set Your treasure In jars of clay. So take this heart, Lord, I'll be Your vessel. The world to see Your life in me.

*CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE “Doxology” -B. Wren

(Glory to God Hymnal #609)

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures high and low. Alleluia, alleluia! Praise God, in Jesus fully known: Creator, Word, and Spirit one. Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

*OFFERTORY PRAYER

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE AND INSTITUTION OF THE SUPPER PRAYER OF GREAT THANKSGIVING BREAKING OF BREAD AND POURING OF CUP COMMUNION OF THE PEOPLE “Come, Share the Lord” – B.J. Leech

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT AND LORD’S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

(Chorus) We believe in God the Father, we believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit and He's given us new life. We believe in the crucifixion, we believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He's coming back again. (We believe)
