TRUE PROPHETS

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will fill the mouth of

a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mor-

tal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and heal-

ing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice. The

whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some

false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and

even held positions of authority. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’

fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because

he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert

temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even

against God’s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of

the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our

work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true

prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our

hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words

filling our mouths.

Join us during this Year of Mercy,

Feb. 18-22 for our

Parish Mission and Healing Service entitled:

Why Be Catholic?

Fr. Ken Geraci, lived the life of the prodigal son for

most of his young adult life. Raised in a nominal

Catholic family, who only lived the externals of the

faith, Fr. Ken left the Catholic Church for many

years. During that time he worked as a business

profession in Advanced R&D and software testing;

a few years into his career he joined a few of his co

-workers in establishing a 4.5M Internet software

company. Focused on money, fitness and success,

he made little room for God; but God did not give

up on him. During this journey, God presented him

with challenges that forced him to question his

personal beliefs and the question “What is Truth?”

Through a series of conversions, years of struggle,

study and questioning, Fr. Ken found his way from

agnosticism, to non-denomination Christianity and

ultimately back to the Catholic Church.

Fr. Ken joined the Fathers of Mercy in 2006 and

was ordained in 2012. Having lived a secular

existence, Fr. Ken has a great understanding of the

personal and societal pressures that individuals face

and knows what it is like to “hate coming to

church.” This mission is for people of all ages and

levels of faith, from those who are madly in love

with Jesus, to those who pretty much cannot stand

church or religion. Regardless of your level of

faith come and experience God’s Divine Mercy!

Saint Blaise Feast: February 3

Saint Blaise’s Story

We know more about the devotion to Saint Blaise by Christians around the world

than we know about the saint himself. His feast is observed as a holy day in some

Eastern Churches. In 1222, the Council of Oxford prohibited servile labor in

England on Blaise’s feast day. The Germans and Slavs hold him in special honor,

and for decades many United States Catholics have sought the annual Saint Blaise

blessing for their throats.

We know that Bishop Blaise was martyred in his episcopal city of Sebastea,

Armenia, in 316. The legendary Acts of St. Blaise were written 400 years later.

According to them Blaise was a good bishop, working hard to encourage the

spiritual and physical health of his people. Although the Edict of Toleration (311),

granting freedom of worship in the Roman Empire, was already five years old,

persecution still raged in Armenia. Blaise was apparently forced to flee to the back

country. There he lived as a hermit in solitude and prayer, but he made friends

with the wild animals. One day a group of hunters seeking wild animals for the

amphitheater stumbled upon Blaise’s cave. They were first surprised and then

frightened. The bishop was kneeling in prayer surrounded by patiently waiting

wolves, lions and bears.

The legend has it that as the hunters hauled Blaise off to prison, a mother came

with her young son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At Blaise’s

command the child was able to cough up the bone.

Agricolaus, governor of Cappadocia, tried to persuade Blaise to sacrifice to pagan

idols. The first time Blaise refused, he was beaten. The next time he was

suspended from a tree and his flesh torn with iron combs or rakes. Finally, he was

beheaded.

Reflection

Four centuries give ample opportunity for fiction to

creep in with fact. Who can be sure how accurate

Blaise’s biographer was? But biographical details are not

essential. Blaise is seen as one more example of the

power those have who give themselves entirely to Jesus.

As Jesus told his apostles at the Last Supper, “If you

remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for

whatever you want and it will be done for you” (John

15:7). With faith we can follow the lead of the Church in

asking for Blaise’s protection.

6 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 28, 2018

Today's Gospel reading speaks about the authority of the Lord. Jesus begins to teach in Capernaum. The

people are held spellbound because he spoke with authority, not like the scribes. A man comes before

Jesus who is in the hand of the power of evil. Jesus makes the devil come out of the man. The bystanders

are amazed because Jesus has such authority. What do we mean when we speak about the authority of

the Lord? What do we mean when we talk about authority in general? What ways do we exercise

authority? What ways do we exercise the authority of the Lord? When we talk about the authority of the

Lord, we recognize that He is the Creator, or Author of the Universe.

He has the power to govern the universe. God can determine what takes place in the universe He has created. When we talk

about authority in general, we speak about the power a person has received to determine the actions of another person or a group

of people. Society creates laws to protect its citizen and then gives authority to the police to enforce these laws. For example we

give the police the authority to stop our cars if we are driving at 57 mph on a street where the speed limit is posted as 45 mph.

However, as the source of authority, we can change the laws. If we change the speed limit on the same road to 55 mph, the

policeman no longer has the right to stop us if we are going 57 mph. In general, authority is intimately connected with its source.

All authority is by nature transitional, that is, all authority except that authority which comes from the Lord.

In the Gospel of Mark, the people were amazed because they had never experienced someone speaking with such authority. Jesus

held people spellbound because God gave Him the authority to teach the truth. This authority would never be removed from

Jesus because Jesus was intimately united to his Father, the source of the authority. We share in the authority of the Lord to the

extent that we are united to the source of this authority. When we are confirmed we receive the power, the authority, to defeat

evil in the world and to lead others to Jesus, the source of all truth. This authority is given to us by God. God can remove this

authority and will remove this authority if we refuse to stay intimately united to him. God has entrusted us with his authority

only to the extent that we allow him into our lives.

That is the reason why the Church is adamant that we attend Church regularly and receive the sacraments regularly. We need to

have union with God so we can bring his authority, his power to the world. The crowd was spellbound because Jesus spoke with

authority, not like the scribes and Pharisees. People are no different now than they were then. People want to hear the real Word

of God, and feel the presence of God in the words of the speaker. We can do this. We have the authority to do this. People can

witness the Word of God present in our lives, and then choose to make the Word of God present in their own lives. We can do

this. We can make Jesus' presence real for others. We have the authority to do this. People want to learn how to live their lives in

such a way that when they conclude their lives they can stand before the Lord saying that they have made His Presence known in

the world. We can do this. We have the authority, the power, to form others into Christian leaders. We have the authority, the

power of Jesus Christ if only we stay united to him. Today we pray that we may remain united to the Lord, the source of the

power and the authority we have received.
