Its that time o year when ice anglers are appearingon Montanas waters or the ice fishing season. Icefishing is a great way to enjoy the winter weather and tocatch some nice fish. However, Montana Fish, Wildlieand Parks remind ice anglers that saety should be thenumber one concern during a day out on the ice. While there is fishable ice in most areas already, some o the larger water bodies like Fort Peck Reservoirjust roze over this past week. While the first ice o theyear ofen offers some o the best fishing, it also can bequite variable rom location to location and rom day today. Anglers should be amiliar with the water body theyplan to fish, or go with someone who knows that waterand how ice tends to orm and change there. Te saestice anglers are those who pay as much attention to thecondition o the ice as they do the fishing conditions.

In FWP Region 6, there are dozens o water bodiesthat have windmills operating to keep dissolved oxygenflowing to fish and other aquatic lie through the longwinters. However, according to Havre-area BiologistCody Nagel, it can also change the ice conditions. Anglers need to be extra careul about venturingonto any ice where these windmills are operatingbecause the action o the aerators can weaken or thinthe ice, Nagel said. A good rule o thumb is that i yousee a windmill operating out on a pond or reservoir, youshould use extreme caution.

And when on the ice, remember: I you have even the slightest doubt about the saety

o the icestay off it. No fish is ever worth a all intorigid water.

Blue ice is usually hard. Watch out or opaque, graydark or porous spots in the ice that could be weaksof areas. Ice also tends to thin more quickly at theshorelines.

Te ollowing are considered to be MINIMUMSneeded with ice thickness:

4 inches: 1 person with gear 5 inches: small group spread out 6 inches: snowmobile or AV 9 inches: small automobile* 12 inches: pickup truck or SUV* *not recommended, but i you must, proceed at

    your own risk!

Watch or pressure ridges. Tese are areas o openwater or thin ice where the ice has cracked and heaveddue to expansion rom reezing.

est the ice ahead o you with an ice spud bar or anauger.

Dont leave children unsupervised on the ice. Lakes and ponds do not reeze at the same thickness

all over. Moving waterrivers, streams and springsweaken

ice by wearing it away rom underneath. Avoid ice onrivers and streams, or where a river or stream enters a

Ice fishing season is going strong, anglers encouraged to practice safety

In continuance from the front page photo from lastFridays Buzz, as geese were taking off for ight, they

were breaking through the thin ice. So if youre iceshing and cant y, be careful out there!

season, when the weather is warmer. Some other common ice-saety reminders to keep in

mind include: Dress warm and waterproo to help prevent rostbite

and hypothermia. Check in with a local sport shop or bait shop beore

you set out or a trip. Tey may have up-to-dateinormation to share about the places you plan to fish.

Check out ice conditions beore you go. Ask otheranglers or local sources and take into account changesin the weather during the past 24 hours.

Its OK to wear a lie jacket (PFD) or carry athrowable floatation device while out on the ice saeice-anglers do it all the time. Beore you head rom home, tell someone whereyou plan to fish and when you plan to return. Carry a pair o long spikes on a heavy string aroundyour neck. Tat way, i you break through the ice, youcan use the spikes to grip the ice and pull yoursel out othe water. Please ollow these basic rules o ice saety, andhave a good day out on the ice!
