Hail To The ChimpI watched the Baby Chimp Rescue documentary series on BBC America that was in your December issue and I can’t remember seeing a more touching and informative show on TV than this. As cute as the baby chimps are, I don’t know if I could actually sleep with them in my bed! What’s the name of their rescue center and do they accept donations? — Gladys S.

Jim and Jenny Desmond operate Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue & Protection in Liberia, West Africa. You can learn more about their work and support it at liberiachimpanzeerescue.org.

Enough With The Masks And COVID Themes!I’m so tired of TV series showing actors in their masks and having themes centered around the virus. I watch TV to escape the nightmare of our reality today. You would think writers could be a little more creative. For shows like This Is Us, couldn’t they keep the focus more on their younger days when Jack was alive? By the way, that show is so much better this season than last. Thanks for letting me vent. — Barbara

Well, we really should give credit to the writers and directors who are trying to keep their casts safe and continue to produce a TV series, so we actually have new episodes to watch. I can appreciate wanting to escape the theme, though. Thankfully, with cable

TV we’ve got hundreds of channels with plenty of options.

Definition, Please? In show credits, I often see the title “showrunner.” What does a showrunner do? — Chuck

A showrunner has creative control over a production. They are usually a writer, and their job is to make sure the writers room stays on track, the actors are happy and the show is sticking to its budget. The showrunner is also in charge of making sure the production is staying true to the artistic vision of the show.

Awards Season Follow-UpA letter included in our December issue on the delay of the Oscars until April sparked additional questions around awards shows. Here’s a quick update on what’s planned and when.

63rd Grammy Awards Airing Sunday, Jan. 31 on CBS at 8pmET/5pmPTThe Daily Show’s Trevor Noah will host the awards. Music fans from around the globe will be able to watch the show live on CBS/CBS All Access. Additionally, the Grammy Premiere Ceremony, where

the majority of the 83 categories of awards are handed out, will be streamed live on grammy.com. Just like the main show, the Premiere Ceremony also features star-studded announcers and epic live performances from Grammy nominees. “We are simultaneously developing three plans for what the show would look like: One is the traditional show with the full crowd, two is a limited crowd, and three is no crowd, and there’s creative around all three of those ideas — how and where we would film it. But none of them involve changing or postponing the date,” said Harvey Mason Jr., the Recording Academy interim president/CEO.

78th Annual Golden Globe Awards Airing Sunday, Feb. 28 on NBC at 8pmET/5pmPTThe awards will be hosted by Tina Fey

Game show fans were saddened by the passing of longtime Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek Nov. 8 at age 80, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Even during his nearly two-year battle with the disease, Trebek valiantly continued the hosting duties he had performed for nearly 40 years, and he worked up until a mere 10 days before his passing (his last day in the studio was Oct. 29). The final episodes of Jeopardy! that Trebek recorded will air the week of Jan. 4-8.

Starting the week of Jan. 11, Jeopardy! will begin its post-Alex era with episodes that resumed production on Nov. 30. A long-term replacement host has not yet been announced, but for now there will be a series of interim guest hosts, beginning with record-holding former Jeopardy! champ Ken Jennings. Additional guest hosts will be announced in the future.

Goodbye, Alex“Jeopardy!” Airs Alex Trebek’s Final Episodes And Begins A New Era. By Jeff Pfeiffer

    Answer: Friday, Jan. 8

    Question: When will Alex

    episode of Jeopardy! air?

    Inauguration Day 2021

Joe Biden will officially become the 46th president of the United States, and Kamala Harris will become the first woman and person of color as vice president, effective at 12:01pm ET on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Very few details on what this Inauguration Day will look like were available at presstime, but it’s likely that with ongoing pandemic precautions still in place, there will not be the usual crowds gathered in Washington, D.C., for the oath-of-office ceremonies. The traditional nighttime celebratory balls and parties will probably be more subdued than usual, if they are held at all.

You’ll find inauguration coverage on the usual networks like ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, NBC and PBS, among others. They will likely have some sort of coverage throughout the day starting in the morning; check listings for more information on respective networks’ start and end times for inauguration coverage. — Jeff Pfeiffer

    Questions

When Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist returns to NBC Jan. 5, a few things will be different for the fan-favorite show. The most important change is the new absence of Zoey’s (Jane Levy) father (Peter Gallagher), who passed away in last season’s finale. Zoey’s relationship with her coworker Simon, played by John Clarence Stewart, was one based on grief as Zoey helped Simon process the loss of his own father. This season, the tables have turned, and Simon is the one to help Zoey through her pain. “Zoey and Simon are both in the exact same boat, having lost their fathers,” said Stewart. “In the same way that in the first season, Zoey — with her power — was able to help Simon through some things, Simon may have the opportunity to return the favor to Zoey a little bit.”

We caught up with Stewart in between shooting scenes to ask him our “5 Questions.”

1 If your TV could only have three shows, what would they be?Right now, it’d be The Crown. I’m working my way through. It would be The Wire … yeah, The Crown, The Wire and The Sopranos.

2What three things do you need to have in your fridge or pantry?Pasta and red sauce, some kind of protein [and] a water filter.

3What movie can you watch over and over? Moonlight.4Have you ever been starstruck? It’s kind of embarrassing. … It was Mahershala Ali.

There was an event [for Zoey’s] last season. I went there and there’s all these different people. It’s my first time being

in a space like that. He was just moving through the space of people, and he just had this gravitas and elegance and calm

about him. I think that when I met him, I actually did a bow. It was involuntary, too. I was like, “What the

@#$% are you doing?” But yeah, it happened.

5What kinds of jobs did you work before becoming an actor?Oh my gosh. I was quite a few things. I worked as an attendant at this go-kart place called Malibu Grand Prix. I would just move the go-karts around. I was a brand ambassador, meaning I just stood in New York outside of stations and handed out samples of things. Sometimes when I would get really tired, I would just throw the whole thing away and said I did my job for the day. The [job] I spent the most time doing, I was a bellman at a hotel in New

York. I did that for a number of years. It’s like taking people’s luggage to their rooms, taking

COMING UP AT THE CWThe CW show Black Lightning is getting a spinoff based on one of its popular characters. Painkiller will star 1 Jordan Calloway, who currently plays the eponymous character on Black Lightning. He portrays Khalil Payne, who harbors guilt from his former life as a killing machine named, yes, Painkiller. Soon he is thrust back into a world that needs him and his unique skill set, bringing Painkiller out of retirement and back on the scene. The pilot of the new show will air as the seventh episode in Black Lightning’s upcoming fourth season, due to premiere in February. … The CW has also put into development Modern

Austen, a contemporary reimagining of Jane Austen’s novels. The show will function as a one-hour anthology series with six installments, and each season will follow one novel,

beginning with Pride and Prejudice in a modern-day San Francisco. … Super producer Greg Berlanti is looking to add to the superhero fare on The CW with 2 Wonder Girl, a drama series based on

the DC Comics characters. The series centers on Yara

Flor, a Latina with powerful roots who learns she is a

superhero and must protect the world from forces of evil. This would mark the first Latina superhero title character of a DC series.

CLASSIC FILMS COMING TO TVGretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire) is stepping into

the female lead in Showtime’s upcoming American Gigolo, an update of the 1980 Richard Gere film. Jon Bernthal will play the main role of Julian Kaye in this modern-day reimagining where he is introduced 18 years after being arrested for murder. While seeking the truth about the setup that sent him to prison, he also seeks to reconnect with the love of his life, Michelle (Mol), whose character was played by Lauren Hutton in the original film. … An anthology series is being developed based on the stage play and 1954 Alfred Hitchcock movie 3 Dial M for Murder. Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is executive producing and looking to star in the project, which is being developed through MGM/UA Television and has yet to be connected to a network. The reimagining will focus on the female character from the original material, who in Hitchcock’s film was played by Grace Kelly.

THE STARS ARE OUT ON ABCABC has given a straight-to-series order to a new multi-camera comedy bringing together Emmy winners 4 Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer. The Untitled Alec Baldwin/Kelsey Grammer Project (real title obviously forthcoming) will star both men as ex-roommates who reunite years later to give it another go. The duo will also executive produce the show, which comes from Modern Family co-creator Christopher Lloyd. … 5 Niecy Nash has joined the cast of the upcoming ABC limited series Women of the Movement, inspired by the book Emmett Till: The Murder That Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement by Devery S. Anderson. Nash will play Alma, Emmett Till’s grandmother, who protected her family in Chicago while Emmett’s mother traveled the country to find justice for her son.

    What’s New

The NFL expanded the playoff field from 12 teams to 14 teams beginning with this postseason. Now comes the hard part: actually getting the games played.

Two additional wild-card teams — one each in the AFC and NFC — will qualify for the playoffs. Now, only the No. 1 seed in each conference gets a bye in the wild-card round. The remaining division champions in each conference with the best records are seeded 2, 3 and 4, followed by the next three teams per conference with the best records seeded 5, 6 and 7. Wild-card weekend matchups will be No. 7 at No. 2, No. 6 at No. 3 and No. 5 at No. 4.

The regular season schedule was repeatedly disrupted by positive COVID-19 tests, resulting in several game postponements, and it’s exceedingly optimistic to think the playoffs won’t also be impacted. At the time of this writing, the NFL had been considering putting playoff teams into “local

bubbles” with players and staff isolated in hotels with strict protocols.

The regular season ends with Week 17 on Jan. 3, though there’s the possibility postponed games with playoff implications could be played in a Week 18. NFL owners approved a contingency plan to increase the playoff field to 16 teams if meaningful games couldn’t be played in the additional week. The cancellation of the Pro Bowl, which will be a virtual event involving the Madden NFL 21 video game, gives the NFL some scheduling cushion in order to keep Super Bowl LV on Feb. 7.

Top contenders in the AFC include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tennessee Titans, Buffalo Bills and the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. Likely playoff teams in the NFC include the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and L.A. Rams. A playoff spot will be wasted on whichever team wins the woeful NFC East.

T his January, an unusual take on the modern woman is coming to FOX — one who doesn’t wear Spanx. Cue the gasps. The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik stars in Call Me Kat, about a math professor who quits her job to open a cat café in Louisville, Kentucky. Of course, she’s almost 40 and single — surely the kiss of death, at least to her mother (Swoosie Kurtz) — but to Kat, there’s so much more to life than worrying about walking down the aisle. She has great friends and coworkers (Kyla Pratt and Leslie Jordan) and a business filled with kitty companions. Who cares that her old friend and former crush Max (Cheyenne Jackson) has moved back to town?

The series has oddball genetics: It’s based off of the unconventional British comedy Miranda starring comedian Miranda Hart. “Jim Parsons came to me, [with] his production company, and he told me about the show Miranda, which was really popular on the BBC, and asked what I thought about it. And I literally thought he was asking me for professional advice of what project he should produce next. And I said, well, that sounds absolutely delightful. And I didn’t know that what he meant was he wanted me to be the American version of Miranda,” enthused Bialik. “So a few conversations later, I figured it out, and we sold this really quirky and really bold show to FOX.” In the U.K. comedy, Miranda makes friends with fruit, often bursts into song and embraces weirdness at every turn, something that’s refreshing to find in a character “of a certain age” on American television. “There are definite American twists to [the show] and a different sense of humor for us versus them,” explained Bialik. “But the core of it is that you can not have everything and still be a dynamic, awesome, interesting person with a full and beautiful life, even if it doesn’t look like what other people think it should.”

Call Me Kat pairs Bialik again with her old costar Parsons — an executive producer here — who played Sheldon to her Amy on The Big Bang Theory. “It’s so rare that you find anyone, I think, in any job, that you actually want to work with for as long as we do,” Bialik said of her collaborator. “Working next to Jim Parsons every day for almost 10 years was one of the

highlights of that job, and literally, of my career. To work with someone like him, who obviously is such a skilled and an awarded actor who is also a person that I enjoy spending time with, is really exceptional. … However annoying I must’ve been to him all those years, [I was] obviously not that annoying, because he’s still working with me.”

But the main reason to tune in to the show is Kat herself, a dynamic heartbeat of a character that marches to the beat of her own drum. “She has a really big heart, but also had an element of a little bit of emotional immaturity, so that her best laid plans don’t always work out well for everyone. And as a human being, what I love about playing this character is that we’re showing a normal woman. I’m not wearing Spanx, and I’m not having work done. … It’s very, very special. It’s very scary, because I’m not used to seeing women, quote, my size as, quote, normal women on television. But we really hope that many women and men in TV land, and in America, watching, will say that’s what a woman looks like.”

We’re cheering the leading man of NBC’s Mr. Mayor, a new comedy from exec producers and hitmakers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt). Ted Danson is a genius at playing self-involved dudes who bumble into doing the right thing (see: demon Michael on NBC’s late, lamented The Good Place and bartender Sam Malone on the network’s classic Cheers). He’s set up to do just that in Mr. Mayor as a rich businessman who runs for office with less than pure motives — and wins. Now, he has to figure out what he stands for, gain the respect of his biggest nemesis (a brilliant Holly Hunter) — a liberal councilwoman who considers him unqualified (and too tall to be trusted) — and connect with his teenage daughter, all while trying to get anything right for America’s second weirdest city. This show gets our vote.

Alan Tudyk Leads A Humorous And Engaging New Sci-Fi Series. By Jeff Pfeiffer

When science-fiction films or TV shows have portrayed a humanoid-looking alien making its way on Earth, the results have too often featured cliched “take me to your leader” sorts of robotic interpretations by actors. There have been exceptions, though, with some actors offering more nuance to their performances as aliens. Alan Tudyk adds himself to this latter rank with his endearing performance in Syfy’s new series Resident Alien.

The actor plays Harry, an alien who must get into character and do a bit of acting himself by posing as the human doctor he kills after crash-landing in the small town of Patience, Colorado. On a secret mission to destroy all humans, Harry starts off living a simple life, but things get a bit rocky when he’s roped into solving a local murder and realizes he

Walker, Texas Ranger made Chuck Norris a household name. Will its new update, Walker, do the same for its star Jared Padalecki? Not that he’s having much trouble being recognized now — he just finished up a 15-season run on the cult favorite Supernatural. Walker has some similar themes — he is in the business of saving people, after all — but the show is a fresh take for the actor, who wasn’t sure what he would be doing after the end of Supernatural.

“For the longest time, I thought I wanted to take a LONG break after Supernatural finished. We filmed in Vancouver, but my home and family have been in Austin, Texas, for 10 years. We didn’t get to see each other as much as we wanted, and it seemed like my kids would grow up so fast every time I would be gone for a week or two,” explained Padalecki. “Then, COVID happened. Supernatural shut down for five and a half months, and I was with my family every single day. It was wonderful to be with them so much, but I realized how much I loved working and telling stories.” Luckily for Padalecki, Walker films in Austin, home of the real-life Texas Rangers. “I get

to see [my family] every day and be a part of a story that I am passionate about.”

This new iteration of Walker of course centers on its hero, Cordell Walker, a widowed father of two who returns to Austin after being away on an undercover mission for two years. He has to relearn his relationships with his son and daughter, as well as with the rest of his family who stepped in in his absence. Even work is different, with an old coworker now his superior, and he’s assigned a new partner, Micki Ramirez (Lindsey Morgan), one of the first women in Texas Rangers history. But Walker soon becomes suspicious of the events surrounding his wife’s death, and as he investigates, things become even more unclear. (Fun fact: Walker’s wife, Emily, is played by Genevieve Padalecki — Jared’s real-life wife!)

Viewers will find much to love about this new version of Cordell. “This Walker is much more about a family than it is about a swashbuckling hero who runs around roundhouse kicking bad guys,” says Padalecki. “Those have been my favorite stories to tell.”

HHarHarra ry yryy in innhishishiish ttrtrtrtt uee eeuffffoforf mmm

needs to assimilate into his new world. As he does so, he begins wrestling with the moral dilemma of his mission and wondering if humans may be worth saving.

“Even though he is, in a lot of ways, more evolved, from a more evolved planet, he’s an idiot,” Tudyk says of Harry. “He’s ignorant when it comes to humans and the world, and definitely how the Earth works. But his reasoning can be very funny to us. To him it makes sense, but to us, it can seem absurdly callous and really funny in the moment. … He starts out coming to destroy, but as he learns more from humans, he grows.”

While we see Harry in his true form a few times in the pilot episode thanks to makeup effects Tudyk tells us took two and a half hours to apply, the actor does say that throughout most of the episodes it is about 90% himself as the alien that we see. And that means the task of conveying Harry’s “alienness”

falls almost entirely on Tudyk’s skills with mannerisms, body language and eye expressions, and voice inflections.

It’s a fine acting line that Tudyk walks well, finding a balance that shows something is off about Harry without being too over the top. The actor deftly fluctuates between humor, terror, menace and emotion in a role perfectly tailored to combine the talents in physical acting, comedy and voice work that he has shown in previous sci-fi projects like his live-action role in the 2002-03 series Firefly and his voice role in the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016).

“You don’t want to go too

Starman,” Tudyk explains, referencing Jeff Bridges’ Oscar-nominated performance as an alien in that 1984 film. “He [was] so unsettling. His alien was so other. Just his breathing and the way he spoke was labored. [On the other hand,] if [Harry is] too casual and comfortable, then you don’t buy him as being someone who’s experiencing

this world, and humans and human interaction, for the first time.

“[Harry is] kind of childlike in a lot of ways. It’s about trying to keep the awareness of even

though I look like a human, I’m wearing — in my

[character’s] mind — an alien suit, and just sort of hovering

back there, peering out through the eyeholes, looking at the world and operating the

    body almost like a puppet.”Res

    What’s New

Ever since her early days in the ’90s as a New York radio DJ, Wendy Williams has been telling it as it is. The self-made Williams has used her raw and unfiltered honesty to amass millions of fans (along with some haters), launch a nationally syndicated talk show (which has been airing since 2008), pen a bestselling autobiography (as well as six other books), and ultimately become the savvy media mogul and businesswoman she is today. Williams shares her life story — and she admits it’s a mess — this month on Lifetime in the two-hour biopic film Wendy Williams: The Movie (Ciera Payton stars as Wendy), and in a deeply personal documentary, The Wendy Williams Story … What a Mess!

“It’s my truth,” Williams tells us. “A lot of the documentary was done at my apartment here in downtown Manhattan,

where I’m lying on the couch. I laugh, I cry, I eat

Doritos and caviar. … It’s just being me.” Here she shares more.

After penning your autobiography, what made the timing right to make this movie and follow-up documentary? Wendy Williams: It couldn’t

have been more perfect. I acknowledged that I’ve written

several books and I thought my autobiography was the diamond of

all. I told it. I spilled my guts. I was very honest, and I said, “I’m never doing

that again.” I liked it, because I gave of myself every day on the

radio, and then now with the TV show. I talk honest. And then, this partnership came

with Lifetime. Well, there’s not a woman alive that I know that does not

enjoy a Lifetime presentation. So I’m a fan, and now I’m part of the family.

The ladies of hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa were never afraid to push it — the envelope, that is.

In 1985, Queensborough Community College nursing students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton formed a rap group and recorded a song for aspiring producer Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor’s class project. The duo recruited Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper, and by 1987, Salt-N-Pepa turned “Push It” into a hit that would become an ’80s hip-hop classic. With their suggestive dance moves and songs about female sexual empowerment, the group had groundbreaking commercial success and paved the way for female rappers to follow.

The life and times of Salt-N-Pepa are depicted in Lifetime’s three-hour biopic, starring GG Townson as Salt, Laila Odom as Pepa, Monique Paul as Spinderella, Cleveland Berto as Azor, and Jermel Howard as Naughty by Nature rapper Anthony “Treach” Criss. The soundtrack also features some of the group’s greatest hits.

When you look back at your career and life, what times would you describe as the happiest or your fondest moments?Well, in my personal life, it would be having our son [Kevin Hunter Jr.], who’s now 20. … And also, in my personal life, the day that I signed my divorce papers. We gave it a good run. We knew each other for 25 years. We were married 21 years. So, Kevin [her ex-husband] is a thing of the past, and I couldn’t be happier. He’s no longer at the talk show, interrupting, and just being Kevin. I no longer have to turn the key to come in the house and talk to somebody, unless I want to pick up the phone; or cook for somebody, unless I want to cook for myself, which I don’t. It’s always takeout [topics Wendy covers in “graphic detail” in the documentary]. … Another one of the happiest moments of my life was when I got a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — and I’m in a good neighborhood. I’m not where dead people are. I’m in the Jason Bateman neighborhood.

be shared? Well, my happy days are also my darkest days. It was a dark time being pregnant with Kevin. I had already had two five-month miscarriages, and my husband was in the process of cheating on me. During both circumstances, I found out on my own. … I was on bed rest the whole time with Kevin, and I gained 103 pounds, but I didn’t care. I laid in the bed and watched Lifetime, and HGTV, and all the television stuff. And my credit card was my partner in bed because my husband was usually doing what Kevin does. And so, I’d roll over and order stuff for the baby, and order stuff for my new life, because they always say, “Motherhood changes not just the household with the baby, but it changes the woman.” And that was true. I knew I was going to lose that 103 pounds, but I knew that I wanted to be a good representation as a mother to my son.

Over the years, you’ve had your fair share of controversy, even with celebrities. How do you personally deal with that?I’m very sensitive. I’ve been sensitive all of my life, but in terms of celebrities, no. You know why? Because I don’t really think of myself as a celebrity. … I’ve seen enough of the celebrity world where I don’t even want to be involved. … Viewers get so connected with celebrities, for whatever reason, maybe they have nobody else to connect to. This is such a celebrity-driven world. It’s scary. I’m not a role model. Now, if you see something that you like in me, then fine, but don’t look at me for the answer.

    Politics Meets Music

    Jimmy Carter,

    Rock & Roll President

    CNN, Sunday,

    Jan. 3 Stream on

    cnn.com/go

The phrases “rock & roll” and “Jimmy Carter” may not be naturally associated in most people’s minds when they consider the 39th president of the United States. But director Mary Wharton’s documentary Jimmy Carter, Rock & Roll President shows how Carter’s love of all forms of music seems to have augmented his natural abilities to relate to people of all ages, races and cultures, and has been both a feature and an asset for his storied life and career.

As he ran for president in 1976, Carter’s long-standing support from popular music artists dating from before his gubernatorial campaign gave the lesser-known underdog a difference-making boost in the primaries that carried through to his win in November. Once Carter became president, musicians were also frequent guests at the White House, adding fun and, often, a point of connection for political allies, foes and foreign leaders. During his political career and following his presidency, Carter formed lifelong bonds with artists Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers, Rosanne Cash, Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Nile Rodgers and others.

In the documentary, a wide-ranging interview with the Nobel Prize-winning former president (who is now 96) at his home in Plains, Georgia, serves as the spine of the

film. Punctuated with archival footage, the documentary examines Carter’s biography within the context of what at the time seemed to be the dawning of a new age of race and gender relations and human rights.

Through contemporary interviews, Madeleine Albright, Willie Nelson, Chip Carter, Bono, Chuck Leavell, Andrew Young, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood and others describe their relationships with Carter, his sense of humor, his innate compassion and his inspiring commitment to service. The film also features footage of era-defining live performances by Jimmy Buffett, Paul Simon, Dizzy Gillespie, Franklin, Dylan and more.

“We believe CNN viewers will enjoy our film as a nostalgic journey that touches on issues still facing our country today,” Wharton and producer Chris Farrell said in a statement. “Rock & Roll President is a study in courage and compassion, and we tried to convey President Carter’s innate optimism that we hope will resonate with our fellow Americans as we look ahead.

“We share this film with families that we also hope will find a reason to come together in appreciation for the great American values that President Jimmy Carter embodies: Truth, Justice … and Rock & Roll.”

Tiger Woods’ exceptional skill on the golf course turned him into a global superstar. But the success and public image he’d spent his lifetime building came crashing down in the fall of 2009, when reports of Woods’ extramarital affair quickly erupted into a scandal involving multiple women, resulting in a televised apology and a therapy program. Sponsors dropped Woods as a spokesman, and his marriage to Elin Nordegren ended in divorce.

Over the next decade, Woods’ golf game suffered while he struggled through injuries that required four surgeries on his back. In 2017, an interaction of prescription drugs led to an arrest for driving under the influence. Many pundits figured

Woods’ days as an elite golfer were over, but Woods clawed his way back to the top with a win at the 2019 Masters.

The two-part HBO Sports documentary Tiger uses rare footage and interviews to paint the portrait of a man whose athletic brilliance carried along with it the burden of unattainable expectations. Says executive producer Alex Gibney, “This is an epic tale for sports fans and for anyone interested in the pursuit of greatness and the price of ambition paid by athletes, particularly when parents and the society-at-large push them to win at any cost.”

    True Heroism

In 2018, the English city of Salisbury and its roughly 40,000 residents were faced with an unprecedented crisis: an assassination attempt using a chemical agent that has the potential of killing hundreds or even thousands if left uncontained.

After two people are found convulsing on a park bench, police investigators link them to a Russian spy ring and learn the source of their illness: a lethal nerve agent called Novichok. Hundreds of traces of the toxin are found all over the city, and authorities swing into action to stop a potential mass-casualty event.

The Salisbury Poisonings, a four-part miniseries event, uses firsthand accounts from officials and first responders to dramatically re-create efforts to protect the community from the unthinkable.

“Whilst all of our action in this series takes part in the shadow of espionage and attempted assassination, really what we’re doing is trying to tell the stories of real people and ordinary heroes,” says writer and executive producer Declan Lawn. “We actually felt, if anything, that was more interesting and more exciting and in this day and age more important than telling a spy story. This series is about community vs. chaos.”

It’s also unnervingly topical, considering the effectiveness in leadership and coordination of emergency services that saved Salisbury weren’t replicated globally during the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak.

L ast year marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of British veterinary surgeon James Alfred Wight’s first book, If Only They Could Talk, which he published under what would become his better-known pseudonym of

James Herriot. This was followed by other semiautobiographical novels about the interesting animals and people he encountered during his career as a vet — a book series eventually collected under the title All Creatures Great and Small. That was also the title of a 1975 film version and a popular 1978-90 British series adaptation that aired on PBS in the States.

Herriot’s delightful tales return to PBS this month in a new All Creatures Great and Small series that airs as part of the network’s Masterpiece franchise, which itself marks 50 years and over 2,300 episodes as of Jan. 10.

The seven-part drama is a coproduction with Britain’s Channel 5 and recounts Herriot’s early days starting out as a veterinary assistant in a small town in the rural Yorkshire Dales region of northern England in the late 1930s. Nicholas Ralph makes his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring compassion, humor and love of life.

“The whole point of revisiting the series,” explains

executive producer Colin Callender, “was that we felt that there is an appetite [among audiences] for harking back to days gone by, a time when family and community were the sort of core values at the heart of British life, and certainly my feeling was that we are living in such a sort of difficult and problematic time [that] this series would be reembraced because of that.”

The series is indeed a charming and humorous look back. It also looks terrific, but while the striking green hills of its backdrop are lovely, they might not be as colorful as the show’s human and animal characters. “The story [is] told through the animals and their relationship with the owners and the humans,” Callender says.

In one of her final roles before her passing last year is Dame Diana Rigg as the recurring character Mrs. Pumphrey, the wealthy owner of a spoiled Pekingese named Tricki-Woo.

“Working with Diana was an absolute pleasure from start to finish,” recalls Ralph. “She had so much vitality and she kept you on your toes. In between the shots it [was] lovely to just sit there and chat with her. She [was] incredible.”

“The other thing to say about Diana,” adds Callum Woodhouse, who plays Herriot’s fellow new vet, “is the second she met Derek, [the dog] who plays Tricki-Woo, that connection — on and off set — was just as strong as you’ll see it was in the show. I think she really fell in love with Derek. I think she enjoyed working with him, maybe much more than me and Nick.”

MISS SCARLET & THE DUKEMove Over, Sherlock — Scarlet’s On The Scene. By Meredith Ennis

Miss Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips, Peaky Blinders, Wolf Hall) is Victorian London’s brilliant, beautiful, first ever female detective. With her partner, cool-as-a-cucumber ladies’ man Detective Inspector William Wellington (Stuart Martin, Jamestown), she’s out to solve whatever mysteries come her way in this new six-episode series.

Prior to his death, Eliza’s father Henry — a retired police officer — ran his own private detective agency. A skilled investigator, he taught his daughter his techniques, starting when she was a young girl. Now, alone and in need of an income, she’s ready to take over his business and solve some crimes herself, if only she can overcome the public’s misgivings about a lady detective. Luckily for her, Wellington — Eliza’s childhood friend and her father’s other protégé (now known as “The Duke”) — is willing to be the male face of the enterprise.

The two form a somewhat unlikely pair, equal parts partners and adversaries as they tackle cases ranging from what appears to be an open-and-shut murder case (but isn’t), to undercover work on a suffragette organization and a case in which their client is being harassed by messages coming from beyond the grave. The season closes out with their biggest mystery yet: finding out what exactly happened to Eliza’s father.

Enter The Strange Realm Of BBC America’s New Offbeat Fantasy Series. By Ryan A. Berenz

Somewhere in a “distant secondhand dimension,” the city of Ankh-Morpork has found a unique solution to rampant crime: Make it legal.

For the uninitiated, Ankh-Morpork exists in English author Terry Pratchett’s universe of 41 Discworld novels, which satirically twisted the sword-and-sorcery fantasy genre with parodies of historical figures, cultural allusions and lots of wordplay. BBC America adapts several of the Discworld novels for its new series The Watch, which plays onscreen like a mashup of Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Blade Runner.

The City Watch is an ineffective, largely obsolete police force that is powerless against card-carrying members of the Thieves’ Guild, Assassins’ Guild and similar associations. But somehow, all life on Discworld depends on the improbable heroes of The Watch foiling an evil plot to resurrect a devastating dragon.

Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones) stars as Sam Vimes, the grizzled captain of The Watch. Vimes is aided by his partner, Sgt. Detritus (voice of Ralph Ineson), a massive troll with a stone body. Also on the force are werewolf Angua (Marama Corlett), naive newcomer Carrot (Adam Hugill) and dwarf forensics expert Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent). Other characters include wealthy aristocrat Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi), assassin Inigo “The Duke of Stab” Skimmer (Paul Kaye) and a peculiar personification of Death (voiced by Wendell Pierce).

EVERYONE LOVES A NEW GAME!It’s Time To Sharpen Up Your Wits And Have Some

Fun With These New Game Shows. By Barb Oates

CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNEABC, Thursdays beginning Jan. 7

Who’s going to be asking to buy a vowel is yet to be known, but the dynamic duo of Pat Sajak and Vanna White will be hosting a new version of the classic game show during primetime. A slew of celebs will spin the iconic wheel for their chance to win up to $1 million for their favorite charity. After 38 seasons of watching Wheel of Fortune, it’s about time we get a spinoff (no pun intended)! We caught up with Vanna just hours before filming, where she was getting ready to greet the celebrity contestants and give them some helpful hints like “be sure to buy vowels” and “concentrate on the puzzle board, don’t worry about the wheel.” Here she shares a bit more. After 38 seasons, what did it take to get this spinoff going?Vanna White: I think because of all the stuff that’s going on, the network probably wanted some happy times to put on the air. It gives people a chance to have fun in primetime, because we’ve never done it in 38 years. It’s going to be fun! What has changed in the show’s format? It’s going to be all cash, so there are no prizes on the wheel. But there are going to be several million-dollar wedges on the

wheel, so they have the chance to win up to a million dollars for their favorite charity within the hour.We know you can’t share celeb names on who is playing, but anyone who will have you a little starstruck?Of course, yes. There are some that I’ve never met so I’m looking forward to meeting them, and most of the time I don’t get starstruck. Is your wardrobe going to be different now that you are in primetime? It is. They actually hired another stylist (I already have one) to come in and pick specific outfits. [She’s never worn the same dress twice!] I’ll have some different outfits on than normal. I was thinking they were going to put me in glittery evening gowns every show, but, no, they have it mixed up. We have a little bit of everything.Which celebrities would you pick to be on the show, and what charity would you be playing for?Mine would range from feature films to HGTV ... and then there are singers, just so many different people. I’d like to see a variety. I have my own line of yarn [Lion Brand Yarn, Vanna’s Choice] and I donate half of my proceeds to St. Jude [Children’s Research Hospital]. I’ve donated, which I’m very happy, honored and proud to say, over $2 million to them. It warms my heart. It’s one of the best things I ever decided to do. Cele

THE CHASEABC, Thursdays beginning Jan. 7

This series is described as a heart-racing quiz show where three competitors must pit their wits and face off against the Chaser, a ruthless quiz genius determined to stop them from winning cash prizes. Each hourlong episode is a fast-paced battle of brainpower, where contestants are challenged to think faster than they ever thought possible to answer up to 166 questions across all topics.

THE HUSTLERABC, Thursdays beginning Jan. 7

ABC is touting this new show for breaking the game show mold by having one player who secretly already knows the answers. But don’t let that fool you, as it doesn’t mean that individual actually takes home the prize. The game’s format follows five contestants as they work together to answer a series of trivia questions worth $10,000 each, with the goal of growing their prize pot with each correct answer. The catch is that the Hustler (the contestant who knows the answers) must keep his/her identity a secret in order to have a shot at winning the grand prize. Throughout each episode, two contestants are anonymously eliminated by the Hustler, leaving three remaining contestants — the Hustler and two others — who must collectively decide who they think the Hustler is. If they are right, they share the prize pot that could be worth over $100,000. If the two contestants are wrong, the Hustler goes home with the full cash reward.

GO-BIG SHOWTBS, Thursdays beginning Jan. 7

When it comes to competition series, this one’s got a bit of America’s Got Talent, Ripley’s Believe It or Not!, Evel Knievel-like stunts and pure crazy built into it. Snakes, alligators, fire throwers, monster trucks and more take to the stage (or auditorium) to showcase their supersized talents. Along with your average joes, world record holders also take part in the series, all

demonstrating their radical feats and sharing their personal behind-the-scenes stories as they battle head-to-head to impress the judges and advance toward the finale’s ultimate $100,000 prize. Celebrity judges include Snoop Dogg, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Nettles and AEW’s Cody Rhodes, with Bert Kreischer as host.Go-B

Last Man StandingFOX, Sunday, Jan. 3, then Thursdays beginning Jan. 7 Stream on Hulu & fox.com

Tim Allen’s blue-collar family comedy Last Man Standing will get a proper send-off this time.

The sitcom ran on ABC for six seasons, then was unceremoniously and surprisingly canceled in 2017. Still, Allen felt the show was in a “sweet spot” and had stories left to tell. FOX rebooted the show in 2018 and aired Seasons 7 and 8. Season 9, premiering this month, will be the series’ finale.

“We had all considered to end the show after last season, but together with FOX, we decided to add a year so we could produce a full season to create the gentle and fun goodbye,” Allen says. “I’m looking forward to a memorable and hilarious final season.”

In the Season 8 finale, the Baxters were preparing to welcome two new members to their family with Kristin (Amanda Fuller) going into labor and Mandy (Molly McCook) expecting her first child. Season 9 will have a short time jump, as Mike (Allen) and Vanessa (Nancy Travis) face their own futures, and Mike prepares to hand Outdoor Man to the next generation.

SNOWPIERCERFollowing That Off-The-Rails Season 1 Ending, What’s Next As Sean Bean Boards The Train? By Barb Oates

T he first 10-episode season of this thrilling remake of the postapocalyptic dystopian 2013 film was a riveting ride. The series centered around all that was left in a frozen world — an amazing 1,001-car train called Snowpiercer that was filled with 3,000 passengers, divided by social classes, who were left to follow the principles of the train’s builder Mr. Wilford: respecting work, honor and order. But social injustices led to a rebellion. So where did we leave off?

Let’s start with Layton, Hamilton’s Daveed Diggs, who led the Tailies’ rebellion over social injustices, facing off against the upper class and the train’s leader Melanie (Jennifer Connelly). While the Tailies advanced uptrain, it came with great sacrifice. As for Melanie, the true brain behind Snowpiercer, we learned that she chose her beloved train and saving a piece of humanity, potentially over her own daughter, Alexandra (Rowan Blanchard, Girl Meets World), and her former ally Mr. Wilford, as both were left behind. Here Mr. Wilford himself (the amazing Sean Bean, Game of Thrones) gives us some insights as a new power struggle emerges in Season 2.

PRODIGAL SONThere’s A Hell Of A Mess To Clean Up In Season 2. By Ryan A. Berenz

FOX’s devilishly twisted psychological drama Prodigal Son returns for Season 2, and there are a lot of questions that need answers, the first being: “WHAT?!”

Ainsley (Halston Sage) revealed that she’s more of a daddy’s girl than she let on after a shocking incident involving Endicott (Dermot Mulroney). Now her brother, Malcolm (Tom Payne), has a literal and figurative mess on his hands.

“Halston scared the crap out of everyone on the set in that moment,” Payne says of filming that scene. “None of us knew what she was going to do.”

As Season 2 opens, Malcolm’s relationship with his imprisoned father, Martin (Michael Sheen), is about to get even more complicated. “Malcolm spent the entire first season — and his life — trying to distance himself from his dad, and trying to have a relationship with him but not allow him to have any control,” Payne says. “Now, there are only three people in the world that know exactly what happened in that room, and Martin is one of them. And the only person Malcolm can really talk to is Martin. So that’s Malcolm’s nightmare situation.”

One question fans won’t have to ponder for long is the fate of NYPD Lt. Gil Arroyo (Lou Diamond Phillips), who ended up on the wrong end of a knife blade in the season finale. Phillips shared a behind-the-scenes video from a location shoot at a cathedral, which is the scene of a disturbing crime in the new season’s second episode.

“That case especially was such a fun, creepy, weird case,” Payne says. “And I can’t believe that church let us do what we did in there.”

    MichaelSheen andTom Payne

Looks like you just can’t escape the cold and barbaric surroundings when it comes to TV series. What excited you about coming aboard and taking on the role of Mr. Wilford? Sean Bean: I think it was the fact that I’ve seen the original film and was very impressed by that, and when I was offered the chance to play Wilford, of all people, who didn’t star in the film too much, it was a chance to elaborate on that character and I had no hesitation on getting involved.

What can you tease about your train’s history/size and Wilford’s intentions? And then, what episode (and/or scene) are you particularly excited for fans to see?Wilford’s train is really high-tech. He’s had quite some time to be able to refine the engine and the technical side of everything. It’s very lavish, as well. He’s built himself luxurious quarters so that’s kind of a contrast to the rest of the train, which gets worse as you get towards the back. There’s a scene where I’m introduced to the train again as a kind of returning hero and it’s very flamboyant and I’m in really good form, a bit like Oscar Wilde entering the London kind of co-op in the 1890s. And I tried to instill some of that into these particular scenes. He’s such a showman and he’s very flamboyant, which I enjoyed playing.

Lots of buzz surrounds whether Alexandra is your daughter. Clearly we know you can’t divulge, but share with us where the second season picks up and what type of relationship/loyalty Wilford has with Alexandra. What I’ll say is Alexandra is very loyal to me and is behaving as though she is my daughter. The season picks up when there’s just been a war on the train and it’s in shambles. It’s wrecked and people are still weary of each other, and I come in just at the right moment with this new train. There’s a lot of people who support me still. It’s very false because I’m not going to do them any good whatsoever, but they’re the ones who are behind me so I capitalize on that and sweep them all up in this pomp and showmanship and promise them the world. So I’m returning on a good foot.

Tell us about Wilford’s amazing wardrobe and a few of your personal favorites. They were all handmade for me by a wonderful tailor in Vancouver. There were about 10 made — all the finest fabric. All sorts — silk dressing gowns, pajama bottoms, Tom Ford underwear, fur capes, everything. Beautiful shirts, ties, waistcoats, Gucci slippers. The wardrobe is fantastic — so much so, I’ve asked whether I can keep it when we finish filming.
