PREPARE FOR DISASTER
Our area is prone to certain types of natural
or manmade disasters including winter storms
and wildfires Being prepared can help
minimize the impact and stress of the event
Water
Stock up on non-perishable emergency
supplies including shelf-stable food that
doesnt require refrigeration and bottled water
A three to five-day supply of food and water is
recommended Plan for at least one gallon of
water per day
Purchase bottled water or set aside water in clean and
sanitized containers that can be sealed tightly Choose
durable containers that are less likely to break If you have a
gas stove and bottled water is not available boiling water is
enough to kill most types of disease-causing organisms If the
water appears cloudy let it settle and then filter it through a
clean cloth or coffee filter Then bring the water to a rolling
boil for at least one minute Let it cool before storing in
sanitized containers
Another option for clean drinking water is using an
unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to disinfect it ndash
the label should specify that it contains between six percent
or 825 percent of sodium hypochlorite This can also be used
for cleaning and sanitizing other surfaces after disaster hits
Food
A three to five-day food supply is also recommended
Stock up on food that is non-perishable ndash meaning it will last
a long time ndash or shelf-stable and doesnt
require any cooking If you plan on purchasing
canned items be sure you have a can opener
or choose canned goods with a pop-top lid
Storable food ideas Canned or dried fruits and
vegetables canned beans single serve fruit
cups milk boxes granola bars cereal
precooked rice crackers canned tuna beef
jerky nut butters jellyjam trail mix and nuts
Other Considerations
Individuals taking medications should ensure they have
an adequate supply If prescription medications are low refill
prescriptions before the storm hits Households with babies
and infants should ensure there is enough infant formula for
at least five days Dont forget about pets ndash have enough food
for pets on hand for at least three to five days Additionally
gather personal care items like toilet paper toothpaste and
other hygiene items
Consider storing food on high (but easy-to-reach)
surfaces in case flooding occurs Gather other safety items
such as a first aid kit fire extinguisher flashlights and battery-
powered radio so you can tune in to the local news station
Sign up for local weather alerts and local emergency alerts
Talk with your family and loved ones about an emergency
evacuation plan in case you need to leave on short notice Be
sure to have enough supplies for your vehicle as well Source eatrightorg

Dear Friends and Neighbors
2020 was a heck of a year to say the least I miss having all of you in the Senior Center for meals exercise and talks
over a cup of coffee I look forward to the day when all of those things will happen again and the Senior Center is once again a
vibrant place in our community I strive for the department to be a center of excellence for supporting older adults in Pitkin
County as we continue looking to the future to make Pitkin County a truly Age-Friendly Community
Despite the challenges of last year I am proud of the work we accomplished maintaining our high
level of service to the older adults of Pitkin County Though last year looked different than any other
we were able to quickly shift our meal program to a take-out and delivery service We offered virtual
programming options on our website and we chat with whomever we can whenever we can
All of us here at Senior Services are hopeful looking into 2021 Let it be a year of working
chatting laughing and hearing from all of you as we reflect on 2020 and build into a new year of recovery From all of us warm
wishes and happy holidays We hope to see you in person sometime this year
Sincerely Chad

Pitkin County Senior Services bull January 2021 6
