We’re building the Mordialloc Freeway to connect the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to the Dingley Bypass.

The Mordialloc Freeway will slash travel times and ease congestion in Melbourne’s south east, providing a safer, more reliable journey.

The project will take 13,000 trucks off local roads, giving local roads back to local residents.

Keeping you moving

We’ll prepare Traffic Management Plans to maintain the safety of the public and our workers and reduce the impact to traffic during construction.

These plans will consider existing road conditions to decide the best way to manage temporary changes to traffic flow.

To reduce the impacts we'll schedule works impacting traffic outside of peak times. While we're building the new Freeway we'll also regularly monitor traffic conditions in the area.

Using traffic managementWe'll use traffic management measures to keep you and workers safe during works. These include:

temporary traffic signals

installing safety barriers to safely separate drivers from our construction works

traffic controllers

reducing speed limits.

installing signs to guide motorists, pedestrians and cyclists through changed traffic conditions

closing some lanes

We’ll also need to close some roads overnight in future when we lift the beams for the new Freeway bridges into place, including:

• Old Dandenong Road

• Centre Dandenong Road

• Lower Dandenong Road

• Governor Road

• Bowen Parkway

• Springvale Road.

Traffic conditions will progressively change, and we ask you to be alert, patient and pay close attention to road signs, traffic controller’s instructions and reduced speed limits.

Managing truck movementsThere will be a large number of trucks travelling to and from our work site.

We’ve developed a strategy to manage truck movements and minimise disruption to road users and the local community. This includes:

• planning truck routes to minimise the distance they’ll travel on local roads

• planning truck movements to minimise the impact on any one road

• sourcing the material from multiple quarry locations across Melbourne

• making changes to roads crossing our worksite to allow trucks to safety enter and exit the work site

• ensuring our truck drivers are informed about speed limits

• monitoring traffic volumes and adjusting truck routes as required

• once at the work site, we’ll use a temporary haul road to take trucks off local roads.

Maintaining access to private propertyWe’ll make every effort to ensure there is little or no disruption to properties during our works. We’ll let you know in advance if access to your property will be temporarily affected.

Being accountable for what we doWe’ve developed an Environmental Management Framework (EMF) which includes approved Environmental Performance Requirements (EPRs) to minimise impacts to the community. These describe the traffic and transport outcomes we’re required to achieve during the design, construction and operation of the Freeway.

Information on our EPRs can be found in our Environmental Management Framework and viewed at roadprojects.vic.gov.au/projects/mordialloc-freeway

Communicating traffic changesWe’ll provide you with advanced notice about any traffic changes, including:

• signs placed on roads alerting road users to traffic conditions

• letters to nearby properties

• our social media channels

• advertising in local newspapers

• our website roadprojects.vic.gov.au and bigbuild.vic.gov.au

• email updates.
