Sadly, the Royal Canadian Military Institute has lost a very distinguish past president and dedicated member, Brigadier General Kevin Gerald Troughton, CD. NEW YEAR’S DAY LEVEE

The Lincoln and Welland Regimental Band

The 2019 New Year’s Day Levee was attended by St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik, Lt.-Col. Christopher Cinicio of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment, Deputy Commanding Officer Christopher Canavan and the commander of the 10th Battery, Captain Zoran Pocuca. The program included performances by the Lincoln and Welland Regimental Band, and the firing of a 25-pound field artillery field piece by the 10th Battery. The traditional toasts were to: Her Majesty the Queen; Canada; 10th Battery, 56 Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery; and the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. Canada’s military has reversed its plan to abandon the familiar yellow paint scheme for the country’s new search-and-rescue planes after debate within the ranks over the aircraft’s need to be visible on such missions.

COLONEL ROBERT E. PECORARO USAF (ret.) Our speaker for the January 16 meeting will be Colonel Robert E. Pecoraro who is a retired United States Air Force Officer. He has 30 years in the service of the United States. Col. Pecoraro was commissioned through the Officer Training School in 1982 and his career included tours as a C-130 navigator, instructor navigator, Tactical Airlift Liaison Officer to the US Army, and served joint staff tours in the Republic of Korea and Belgium. He also commanded at the Detachment, Squadron, and Group levels. Currently, he is an elected official serving on the North Tonawanda Common Council as an Alderman at Large and is the President of the Western NY Chapter of the Military Officers Association. He is married and has three adult children. He will speak to us on how Americans view Veterans in their communities and what the research actually reflects. He will welcome comparisons on how Canadians view our Veterans. He hopes that the general public both American and Canadian will have a better appreciation of veterans due to this research. Colonel Pecoraro’s presentation should prove to be very pertinent and enlightening.

SEARCH AND RESCUE

The new fleet of 16 Airbus C-295W planes will replace the main Royal Canadian Air Force search-and-rescue fleet of Buffalo aircraft as well as the Hercules transport planes which are also used at times in a search-and-rescue role. It was reported last year that RCAF leadership had requested the new planes be painted tactical grey, asking for a change to the original contract which had stipulated the familiar yellow colour scheme, because they wanted the aircraft to be available for other missions, including combat.

But the move to the grey paint scheme has now been reversed. “While there was, last year, a stated interest in painting the C-295W grey, a decision was made following further consultation to maintain the iconic yellow colour scheme of the RCAF’s current SAR fleet, such as the Buffalo, Twin Otter, Cormorant and Griffon,” the Department of National Defence said in a statement Wednesday. “This colour, which provides a higher level of visibility and recognition in the ground and the air, is also widely known by Canadians — especially those who might find themselves in a situation requiring our aid.”
