What Is Parkinson’sParkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition.

This means that it causes problems in the brain and

gets worse over time. The number of people diagnosed with Parkinson’s

in the UK is about 145,000. That’s around 1 adult in

every 350.

The FactsPeople with Parkinson’s don’t have enough of the

chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells

that make it have died.

There are lots of different treatments, therapies and

support available to help manage the condition.

Our researchers are working hard to develop new

and better treatments - and one day a cure.

■People of any age can be affected by Parkinson’s

and no two people will experience the same

symptoms ■Good management of the condition is essential.

Timing of medication is vital as well as leading a

healthy lifestyle ■

Exercise and keeping fit are a key factor in

slowing down the progression of Parkinson’s

Your hair used to be black when I met you and you used to be taller, I’m sure. You also used to be thinner, but,

goodness knows, that’s not true any more

Now your hair is greyer and thinner and you’re shorter rather than tall,

but I wouldn’t swap you for a fortune. You’re my Valentine, after all.

James Hoggett is offering everyone a great opportunity to win a beautiful Georgian cottage

designed & hand crafted by himself. Draw tickets are now on sale now just £1 a ticket.

James has very kindly agreed to donate all the proceeds from the draw to Peterborough Parkinson’s

Please get in touch if you would like to buy tickets. Thank you to James for your continued fundraising

support

James Hoggett continues to support the branch with his fundraising ideas

James Hoggett moved with his wife Linda to Whittlesey in 1974 & was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2012.

Although James’s work was centred around his skills as an Mechanical Engineer He followed his passion for designing & handcrafting. He built a miniature of HMS Victory (Pictured bottom left) and was very proud that it featured at the Peterborough museum for Nelson’s 100th anniversary. He also handcrafted an Indian head. Holidays to France & the Cotswold inspired James love of Cottages and he took pictures so he make miniature of his favourites

James has always been good with his hands and although there are times when his Parkinson’s symptoms dictate when he is able to do the more intricate work.

Masonic Centre gets a New Chef

Chef ‘Artur Afeldt’

A new chef has been appointed at the Masonic centre and we were invited along for a tasting session, to ensure we were happy before booking our events for 2019 at the centre. Our vegetarian taster was Yvonne Burgess who gives her account of the tastings.‘I enjoyed excellently cooked food of generous proportions. Beginning with a spicy butternut squash soup - a meal in itself. I followed with a very tasty stuffed aubergine packed with mushrooms and vegetables in a creamy, cheesy sauce, accompanied by roast potatoes, crispy Yorkshire pudding, lots of fresh vegetables and a good hearty vegetarian gravy. I struggled on to a rich chocolate tart on a gingery base with whipped cream” All told - a delight produced by someone who obviously loves cooking.

The main course for Chairman Ruth & committee member Tina was a selection of roast meats along with all the trimmings which was also

delicious We were all very impressed and it was a unanimous decision that Artur

is hired. We have booked a Roast Beef Sunday lunch for June 2nd

at the Masonic and Christmas lunch 2019 has also been booked.(Vegetarian options will be available at both events)

If you have Parkinson's, or you know someone who has, you probably have a lot of questions and some worries. You can turn to us. Our free, confidential helpline is available for anyone affected by Parkinson's

across the UK.

Depending on the level of urgency it may not be possible to return your call on the same day, however, we will try and ensure you

receive a response very soon

M.D.Lab have created the Ergo device to improve motor symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease. Pilot research has been promising with an average of a 19% reduction in time performing multiple activities including speech, hand movements and walkingBoth Lucy & Floyd are hoping this technology can help patients with troubling symptoms despite optimal medical therapy

I was asked to be a guinea pig for the new device & was happy to be part of the project.

Lucy & Floyd came to my home & I tried several tasks both with & without the device,

which was positioned on the sternum & was turned on when needed, It gave out vibrations which pulsed on & off during the tasks. The tasks included reading a passage of words, writing words moving playing cards, taking cards out of my purse & walking up & down. all being timed so results & comparisons could be made

Although difficult to be objective, I did feel that my movements appeared to be smoother on some of the tasks

There may be opportunities for others to be involved in Lucy & Floyd’s project work if funding & further interest from researchers comes to fruition.

M. D. LabLucy Jung & Floyd Pierres

You may recall seeing Lucy at our Dobbies afternoon tea. Lucy was demonstrating & getting feedback on a vibrating prototype vibrating pen.

Lucy is currently working with Co-Founder of M.D. Lab Floyd Pierres. Floyd is a doctor working at Peterborough City Hospital
