A Focus at École John Wilson Elementary
École John Wilson Elementary School believes strongly that we must foster an
environment that promotes health and wellness for our students. This includes a
student’s physical, social and emotional well-being. Our focus on this is accomplished
through many layers of school programming and culture. Student physical fitness and
a focus on healthy social/emotional lifestyles is achieved through a school-wide daily
physical education program, swimming, sport days, etc. As well, direct teaching in
classes, such as Health, provides students with the information to better understand
the variety of ways to achieve healthy lifestyles. We are also proud to share that we
have a group of Grade 4 Leadership students working on promoting healthy active
options for our whole school. Watch for more info on this coming home from them
soon!
Our “Naturally Nurtured” program further reinforces health and wellness for our
students. The Naturally Nurtured program consists of 10 one hour sessions for our
Grade 4 students. This program uses a therapy bunny, to reinforce life skills such as
personal responsibility, healthy relationships and emotional awareness.
Our school's core values are also key in supporting the health and wellness of our students. These core values guide École John Wilson Elementary School in ‘Making a
difference for children!’ Our BIG 5
1. Be Respectful 2. Be Responsible 3. Be Truthful and Trustworthy 4. Be Cooperative 5. Be caring
It is École John Wilson Elementary School’s commitment to our students to continue surrounding them with strong values and programs that support their healthy
physical, social and emotional wellness.

Supporting health and wellness of our students and staffA message from the Board Chair The new year provides a perfect opportunity to re-energize the many efforts underway in our school division to support the health and well-being of our students, staff and families. Nurturing a positive physical, social and emotional culture in our schools can positively impact student performance and academic achievement, which allows students to reach their potential. We also care very deeply about this priority for our staff, and our Staff Health and Wellness Committee is working to support several initiatives across Chinook’s Edge. We are grateful to the many people whose efforts are supporting these priorities for everyone in our Chinook’s Edge school communities. Doing so will ensure we are all ready to learn and ready to teach in every classroom across our division. On behalf of the entire Board of Education, we wish each of our families a happy and healthy new year. Colleen Butler, ChairChinook’s Edge Board of Education
Ready, Set, Go! Welcome to Online Kindergarten Registration!Chinook’s Edge is accepting Online Kindergarten Registrations for the 2019-2020 school year. As always, we invite you to call or drop by your Chinook’s Edge school at any time to find out more about the wonderful opportunities waiting for your child!

Celebrating Family Literacy Day at Ecole John Wilson!
January 27th is Family Literacy Day. This is a national initiative that promotes the importance of reading and engaging in literacy related activities as a family. To recognize the importance of this day, we will be celebrating a school wide Family Literacy Day on Friday, January 25th. For more information please visit: ABC Life Literacy Canada.
Literacy is an essential part of our school. We are inviting all students to dress up as their favorite storybook character for the day. Each classroom will be planning their own activities throughout the day so please see class notes for any extra pieces that may be needed (eg. bringing in a copy of your child’s favourite book).
Engaging in literacy activities as family is important and we would like to invite parents/guardians to join your child(ren) for lunch from 12:00 pm-12:30 pm on January 25. You can find a spot in the classroom or in the hallways to eat lunch with your child and read a story together as well. Please bring your lunch and feel free to join in the fun and dress as your favorite storybook character as well! At 12:30pm, our students will be heading outside for recess for some fresh air and play. Thanks for all you do to support the literacy journey in your homes!

Happy New Year to all John Wilson families.
We have a very exciting activity to announce this month, a family summer themed dance! Yay! Please join us wearing your summer dress up costume on Friday January 25, from 6 pm to 8pm in Gym 4. Hope to see many of you there to have some fun in the sunish times. We will need a few parent volunteers to stay and help after for a quick clean up too- please and thank you!
Another upcoming event is our pizza fundraiser- yummy! We will have 5 flavours of pizza to choose from. Watch for these forms coming home at the end of January and pick up pizza dates in March. These fundraisers help out immensely with our student field trips and learning support equipment.
Our next student council meeting is January 22 at 6:30pm. Topics for this meeting are field trip funds allocation and pizza fundraiser. Free child care is provided as always, so please come share your ideas, or say hello! A big thanks to all our parents who have helped out so much already, we can’t do it without you:)
