Eastern St., Sanborn, IA 51248 The Happy New Year from all of us at Prairie View! We hope you all had a wonderful time celebrating the Holidays with your family and friends. We all had a wonderful time decorating for Christmas. We decorated five trees located around our building and made Christmas tree ornaments and reindeer using candy canes in arts and crafts. During the month of December we enjoyed music from all the carolers who volunteered to sing to us, along with Shirley Brandt on the 1st and Denny Nelson who provided us with wonderful music at the resident Christmas party on the 21st. Our Christmas party was complete with many goodies and Santa and Mrs. Claus who handed out the presents to our residents. We watched a lot of Christmas movies in December, one of our favorites were “Miracle on 34th Street”. The 2nd and 3rd grade students at the Sanborn Christian School sang to us on the 14th, they shared many of their Christmas songs. During the Holidays we wanted to shout out to all our wonderful volunteers who take the time to help with many of our activities. Esther DeBoer provided a great program for our December birthdays. Thank you Esther! On the 29th of December we ended the year by ringing in the New Year 2018. We had a great time talking about the past year and thinking of what the New Year would bring. In January we look forward to staying busy with a variety of activities. We will continue to enjoy fitness fun, happenings, bible study and playing cards along with some special programs. Our activity department is always open to any ideas; feel free to share yours with us. A friendly reminder that if you are sick, to please visit another time. Until next time, Anna Wallace Activity Director From the Activities Department Mark and Sue Schultz dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus for our Christmas party. Featured Resident of the Month: Alma Haden Our resident of the month is Alma Haden. Alma came to us from her home in Fort Dodge, Iowa. She was born on January 22, 1927 at her parents’ home near Valparaiso, Iowa. Her parents were Nels and Lillian Nelson. She was the youngest of 6 children. She had three older brothers, Wilbur, Leroy, and Lester, and two older sisters, Wilma and Pearl. She grew up on different farms around the Valparaiso area attending country school through the 8th grade before moving into Sac City, Iowa. Her fondest childhood memories were of playing with her siblings. They would make and play with “stick horses” and even transformed an old abandoned car body frame located in a grove near their house into a play house. Alma also remembers her family gathering in the evening to have a time of Bible Study together and then her mother would play hymns on the piano and the family would sing together. She met her future husband, Dean Haden, in the winter of 1949 at a basketball game they were both attending. They enjoyed going roller skating andattending church together. They were married onFebruary 12, 1950 at the First Baptist Church of Sac City, Iowa. Alma and her husband had 5 children, Susan of Iowa City, Iowa, Kenny of Tifton, Georgia, Janet of Silverton, Oregon, David of Gaza, Iowa, and Deann of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Alma lived and worked alongside her husband running their 160 acre farm near Lytton, Iowa. She grew vegetables, canned, raised chickens, sewed clothes for her family and helped with all aspects of farming. She volunteered at school and church and always enjoyed welcoming people no matter who they were or

where they were from. Alma also enjoyedgrowing flowers and making floral

arrangements, baking cookies, pies, and cinnamon rolls. She was an active “room mother” at school for her children, a Sunday school teacher and a Campfire Girls leader. After her husband passed away she continued to run the farm for 19 years until she moved to Fort Dodge, Iowa in

1997. She continued to be involved with her grandchildren, children, neighbors,

family and friends. She sewed, knitted and baked, often donating her homemade items to

schools or offering them to her guests. Alma thoroughly enjoyed making costumes for Christmas

pageants or school plays. She enjoyed taking many photographs and putting together memory and history books for her children and their families. Alma also had a knack for refinishing furniture and restoring antique pieces. She has traveled many places including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Missouri, Colorado, California, Oregon, and South Dakota going to visit relatives, stopping for a visit anywhere on a farm were her favorites. Alma moved to Prairie View on February 24, 2016. Her favorite thing about Prairie View is the lovely rose bush outside her window in the courtyard.
