Upward Basketball and Cheerleading Upward registration has begun! Our Upward season begins January 9th, with practices once a week. Games begin on January 20th. The last game will be held March 10th. We will wrap up our season with our awards banquet on March 11th. Congregational Meeting - January 14, 2018

Session has called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, January 14, 2018 immediately following the 11:00 am worship service. Church members are asked to attend in order to approve any changes to the Pastor’s compensation and to vote on changes to our corporate charter and bylaws. The revised charter and bylaws will be emailed to church members in advance of the meeting for review.

Christian Education Planning for Faith Formation

January 21, 2018 All church members and friends are invited to attend a presentation about our church’s plans for the future of Christian Education at OPC. “Planning for Faith Formation: A Community of Faith Approach” will be presented in the CLC from 12:15 - 2:00 pm. Please join us to find out how you can participate in our growing Christian Education programs!

Ladies’ Lunch Out

The monthly ladies’ luncheon will be held on Wednesday, January 10th at 11:30 am. We are meeting at Akina Sushi & Asian Food Bistro in Clermont, located at 4300 S Hwy 27 # 101. We meet the second Wednesday of every month at various restaurants in the West Orange area, and all ladies of the church are welcome. If you plan to attend this month, please let Joyce Mullins know so that she can reserve the correct number of seats/tables. Sewing Group News

Our Stitched with Love and Yarn Works sewing ministries are excited to get back to work in 2018 and start up on our sewing projects. Yarn Works, which usually meets the first Monday of every month, will not meet in January due to the New Year’s holiday. If you are interested in sharing your sewing skills with us to help some wonderful causes, please join us! MAH JONGG FELLOWSHIP

Anyone interested in learning the game of Mah Jongg or in honing their skills is invited to join our Mah Jongg group. We meet every Thursday evening at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Join us for friendly competition and fellowship!

From the Pastor Pat and I recently had the opportunity to go see the movie Wonder, which is based on the book published in 2012 by R.J. Palacio. It’s the story (inspired by a real-life experience) of a boy whose face is deformed, even after multiple surgeries. Because of his condition, his mother home-schooled him for several years before making the hard decision to send him to public school at the start of 5th grade.

As you might expect, the boy gets bullied at school and has many experiences where other children are unkind to him - just as his mother had feared. But he attends a great school with supportive teachers and leadership staff.

One of the teachers puts a rule on the blackboard and invites all his students to follow this rule: If forced to choose between being right and being kind, choose kindness.

The rest of the movie is the story of how people of all ages learn to follow that rule - even the boy who is bullied. Some, of course, refuse to embrace it. But many do. I came out of the movie thinking what a better world this would be if more of us followed that rule.

As I consider making a resolution for the new year, I can think of nothing better than this rule - when forced to choose between being right and being kind, choose kindness. That’s going to be one of my rules for 2018. I invite you to embrace it, as well. I think Jesus would be pleased if more of us did so. After all, didn’t he mean something like this when he said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”?

SESSION NEWS

Due to this month’s special events, the December meeting of Session was canceled and rescheduled for Thursday, January 4, 2018 at 7:00 pm in the Fellowship Hall.


Happy New Year 2018!! The Preschool returns to school on Monday, January 8th. We begin our New Year with Chapel and learning about the wise men’s visit to Jesus. In the first month of the New Year we will also be learning about Daniel and Jonah. This month we have an exciting extracurricular activity for the Preschool and all our friends. Please join us on Thursday, January 11th between 3:30 and 6:30 pm for an after-school treat (or before dinner - “eat dessert first”) at Frozen Cow Ice Cream. Frozen Cow has “old-fashioned” ice cream, sugar free, low-fat ice cream, low-fat frozen yogurt, and lactose-free products. All their frozen products contain no high fructose corn syrup. Their milk products come from pasture cows in Tampa, using no bovine growth hormones. Frozen Cow is located at 1201 Winter Garden Vineland Road, in the shopping plaza that includes Macali Eye Clinic and Footworks Dance Studio (just off Highway 50, behind the 7-11). This is the time of year when our friends in all our age groups really show tremendous development of their skills, and it is so fun to experience it with them! Our VPK students will all be given their second formal state assessment this month. It is always exciting to document their progress. The VPK students will receive their final assessment in April. LEGO CLUB Our Oakland Presbyterian Lego Users Group will meet at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 7, 2018 in the Christian Life Center. LEGO enthusiasts of all ages are invited to join us. We have plenty of bricks for everyone!

Children’s Choir Resumes January 10th Our Wednesday night Children’s Choir program will resume on January 10th at 5:30 pm. Join us for dinner in the CLC prior to rehearsals beginning at 6:00 pm. We are looking forward to hearing the children sing in worship again soon!

Men’s Fellowship

Our monthly Men’s Fellowship Supper will be held Tuesday, January 16th at 6:30 pm in the Fellowship Hall. We start our year off with a meal prepared by Wayne Wincey. Our prayer breakfast continues to meet every Tuesday morning at 7:00 am. If you have not yet joined us for our weekly prayer breakfast, we hope you will come this month! We enjoy a hearty, freshly prepared meal of breakfast favorites and then join hands in prayer for the people in our lives.

Camera Club Meets January 15th, 6:30 pm

If you own a digital camera and would like to learn more about photography and how to capture your best photos, you’re welcome to join the OPC Camera Club. Cecil Ramsey, a local professional photographer, leads this club. Meetings are held at the church on the third Monday of each month at 6:30 pm.
