January 2017 Volume 25, Number 1 P resident’s Message The new year is upon us, and once again promises to be a busy year for Jeeping and other activities. Just to name of few: opening of the north-south gates on Planet Ranch Rd.; annual desert clean-up; first aid, winching, GPS and 101 classes; yard sale for charity; Awards Banquet; hot dog run; trips to Tombstone and Moab. Makes me tired just thinking about all the fun we are going to have. At the last meeting we discussed a change to the roster so that the member’s picture will now appear next to their name. With a lot of work on the part of the webmaster, this should be an easier way to identify the members. Another item we discussed was putting more photos on the public side of the web which can only be accomplished with the help of the membership. Just look above the Activities Schedule and you will see “Any member with photos of past event, please send to :Photos”. Just click on photo and the pictures will be sent to the appropriate people. Remember to make those New Year’s resolutions and maybe one of them could be to become more involved in the Club either by participating on runs or volunteering for one of the many committee positions. The Color of Your Jeep

What color is your jeep? Did you select the color or did it just happen to come that way? According to Stephen E. Stephens, A.C.S. psychotherapist, the color may well say something about you. The type who buy a is a flamboyant and impulsive, a real seeker of life. These folks don’t waste a second. They’re genuine people lovers. A person who buy a BLUE 4x4 is tranquil, reflective and thoughtful. They’re loyal, conscientious and would rather pause and think before rushing into anything. The owners of are spontaneous, creative, and friendly. They’re usually cheerful, but every once in a while can be just eccentric. The type who purchases a GREEN 4x4 is a warm, giving person with a soft spot for nature and a love for their fellow man. They’re fairly easy going too. People who choose a are clean and neat. They’re guardians of the people and things they have. More spiritual than materialistic. They can also be indecisive. Owners of BROWN 4x4’s are responsible family people who like to roll up their sleeves and pitch in. Disliking wasted effort, they choose a color that won’t show the dirt. People who buy a BLACK 4x4 are business minded and conservative with little time for fun. But then again they can be the exact opposite. A person who buys an ORANGE 4x4 is outgoing and exhibitionist. Thinks he or she is fun to be with and definitely their own person. Anyone who chooses a SILVER 4x4 is basically conservative with an urge and a drive to attain security and the best things in life. Those who select GOLD 4x4’s are flashy, love small animals, seek the sunshine and are real do gooders. Reprint from Feb 1999 Newsletter.

Have you looked at your State Land Permit recently? What month does it expire? Since Havasu is surrounded by State Land it is important that you have an up-to-date permit. Now you can go to “Recreational Permit – Arizona State Land Department” online to complete and pay for the permit, and then print it. No more printing off a form and sending it in and then wait for the permit to arrive in the mail. Start the New Year out right by having a current permit. To submit on line go to “land.az.gov”, click on “APPLICATIONS AND PERMITS”, then “ Online Recreational Permit Portal here”. Read the instructions, pay, and submit, your new form will be emailed to you and you’re good for a year. If you would rather copy a form and send it in, there is a copy on page 12.

CATTAIL RUN Cattail is a run where there are chances for everyone to be as challenged as they wish. On Saturday, December 3, 20 H4W members and three guests (including one prospective member) set out for a day in the desert. Many tried the Wall of Death and most that did, succeeded. Geri’s Jump proved to be no problem for any of the group. Each and every obstacle was approached and conquered by everyone. After lunch, we retraced our route, taking a side trip through the Bowling Alley. Those who felt uncomfortable with that route watched us from a vantage point above the Alley. Prior to air-up, we stopped on a plateau that overlooked the terraces. A brief history of the terraces was given and the run concluded. Thanks goes to Jim Liston and Steve Perry who shared tail gunning duties; to Snake and Willie Williams for carrying the AED; to Bill Trunk for spotting and leading us through the Bowling Alley; to Bob Carson for navigating; last, but not least, to everyone who ventured out with me.

MINUTES TRAIL BOSS MEETIMG DECEMBER 12. 2016

There were 18 H4W members present at our monthly meeting held at the Genealogy Library in Shambles Village. Items discussed:

There were 23 runs completed in November led by 16 trail bosses --an increase of five over October.

Trail bosses are doing an excellent job in recording and completing run sheets.

Setting up and conducting Driving 101 and winch classes. Steve Perry will conduct a 101 class on Saturday, February 11, and Jim Bowen will head up a winch class on Tuesday, February 14. Willie Williams will host a “Lipstick and Lockers” class for those ladies that might be interested in some basics of jeeping.

Bob Drew and Tom Bunnell will be holding Magellan gps classes and Dave Blake will work with those that have a Loranz gps. Dates, times and participation limits to be determined. We also discussed having classes on IOS and android tablets and their use.

Bruce Speirs informed the group that there is now a go-around on Rice Road in Havasu Heights.

A reminder that State Land Permits are now accessible over the web.

There will be an announcement at the regular H4W meeting about no-shows on runs.

A soft opening of Planet Ranch Road will be held on Saturday, December 17. The official opening of Planet Ranch Road will be in January; the date to be determined.

Bruce Speirs will head up junk car removal in the early Spring. He asked for continued information as to junk car locations that we may encounter on jeep runs.

Meeting adjourned at 10:15. Charles Leipart, Run Chair

High Line Trail 12-7-16

At the very beginning of the trail there are several steep hills to go up and everyone did such a great job I knew we would have no trouble taking the rocky part of the trail to the J & J Mine. Upon arrival it was evident that someone again had cut the fencing around the shaft area of the mine…..more work for the fencing detail. After the mine we traversed the many hills and washes enjoying the views of the lake and the variety of colors in the rocks. After a brief stop at the remains of what started out as a house we headed over to U go Falls. Of the nine jeeps on the run, 3 elected to tackle the falls and did an excellent job…..looked like they had done it many times before. A big Thank you to Frank & Pat Lopez for being tail gunners. Willie Williams, trail boss

Planet Ranch Sign Crew On December 13th your H4W assisted AZ Game & Fish with the installation of three kiosks and a multitude of trail signage. We were also joined by members of the Havasu SXS and AZ Sunriders OHV clubs. By careful coordination we were selected to handle the more ‘technical’ tasks. While disap-pointed we were not involved in all the heavy labor building the kiosks we kept our spirits up with the knowledge that we put our signs in the right places and the stickers…oh my goodness, they were ap-plied just so spiffy! We all had a great time in this worthwhile effort. I would like to thank Ladell & Judy Olson, Bruce & Kathlyne Speirs, Garnett Collins, John Strong, Mark Corder, Darryld Kautzmann, Ken Weller, AG Fiddler, and Willie Williams for a long day’s worth of driving and working. Bullhead Geocache Run V Steve Riley

We had 5 Jeeps with 6 members and 1 guest travel to the Laughlin Ranch area east of Bullhead City. From there we searched for several geocaches while we traveled through the Narrows slot canyon. We also toured two other side slot canyons, one by Jeep and the other on foot. The Narrows ends at a large rocky area where the remains of an old Ford can be seen. Seven burros watched us closely as we were searching for a cache. Thanks to Warren Jones for tail gunning.

Black Inky, Saturday Nov 26 Rodger Melton

Twelve Jeeps met At Terribles/I-40 and proceeded to the air down spot at Griffith Rd exit. Tom Bunnell was tailgunning and closing most of the gates until Mike Beets and his passenger, Rudy of Rudy’s Glass, took the last in line as they were logging GPS numbers for the Search and Rescue map database. The run leader took a wrong turn just to test the alertness of the elite group and Ladell was first on the CB to correct the error. On to Walnut Creek road and past the ranch house to the petroglyphs where the group had a good look-see and jaw-wagging session. Next was the serious business of the Black Inky loop but the weather was perfect the only ‘mechanical’ was to put a shot of air into Gary Wiskas’ tire. A few branches needed pruning and one rock moved from the narrow trail. Lunch was at a switchback that left 4 rigs on the uphill but the climb was good for the appetites. Sorry boys but Ladell was getting mean hungery. After finishing the loop the group headed back down and out to the train tracks where a large puddle/small pond lay dead ahead but with a fine go-around. We all stayed out of the water until Peggy took it on, pedal to the metal. She sent water up 10 feet and probably kept her tires off the muddy bottom. Good show and a fitting end to a fine day.

Copper Basin 12/10/16 What started out to be a fun day in the trail to Copper Basin ended up to be a day of frustration for some. About half-way into the run, up jumped the devil. A broken transmission caused us to split into two groups. Snake and Willie Williams took over as trail boss and completed the run while three of us headed back to the starting point with the disabled jeep in tow. Now the rest of the story… The group continued on across the wash-board and hoop-tee-dos, finally arriving at the short, but very scenic red rock area which made all the bouncing worth while. With excellent tire placement the group made it through with only a few bangs. Every run you notice something different and this one was no exception…..near the Horse Head Rock, up on a knoll was a metal design that read “Nick at Nite” with the initials RIP. A big Thank you to Duane & Linda Gauthum for being tail gunners for both trail bosses. Charles Liepart, Snake & Willie Williams, trail bosses

Cat Tail Saturday Dec. 17, 2016, a cold (41 degrees) with a 12mph wind, and a group of eager 4 Wheelers began the Cat Tail Trail. The first bump in the road (Wall of Death) proved to be a challenge for some, however perseverance and lots of giggles won out. Then on to the next bump, and the next, and the next, and now it’s Lunch. Time and the telling of the experiences - - - - and some tall stories thrown in for good measure. And on the way back, one fellow decided to add a new line to going up a waterfall by making 90 degree turn half way up, which didn’t work out so well, and the wench’s got a work out, getting the boy back on line. I think a good time was had by all. And I would like to thank all of the spotters needed on the run i.e. Bill Trunk, Mike Yahrmarkt, Tom Bunnell, and Willie Williams. And the Tail Gunners Tim & Pat Maskell, Mid Gunners Kurt Beach & Cheryl Parris. Snake Williams, (Trail Boss)

2 EASY: Use of 2 wheel and some 4-wheel drive. Trail may have some rocks, loose road surface, and ruts but a reasonable line for driving.

3 EASIEST MODERATE: 4-wheel drive with aggressive tire treads. Expect a rough road with rocks and sand that requires lower tire pressure. Substantial sections of single lane.

3¼ MODERATE: Some 4 wheel driving experience needed. Same as above with some use of high and low range gearing. These trails have a rough, rutted surface, rocks and deep sand. Sections may be steep enough to cause traction problems, narrow shelf roads with steep drop-offs and tight clearance between rocks.

3½ HARDER MODERATE: For experienced drivers. At least a 2” lift and 33’ tires with aggressive tire tread, one locked differential, high and low range gearing. Potentially dangerous, large rocks, ruts, steep slopes, loose surface and narrow clearances that need to be negotiated.

- Mandatory Vehicle Equipment - All vehicles on H4W runs must be 4-wheel drive & equipped with a CB radio, fire extinguisher, first aid kit, tow straps, and front and rear tow hooks or safe hitching point ….. all in working order.

3¾ HARDEST MODERATE: Skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with both differentials locked, some strapping/winching. Very challenging sections, extremely steep grades, loose surfaces, large rocks, deep ruts and tight clearances.

4 DIFFICULT: Highly skilled experienced drivers only. Same as above with belly up, 4 to 1 transfer case or equivalent, skid plates, beefed up axles and suspension system. Probable strapping/winching. Vehicle width and wheelbase should be considered. Possible body damage.

5 HARD: All of the above. Probable body damage.
