THE MESSENGERof Quaker Gap Baptist Church - King, NC

A WORD FROM PASTOR JACK…

REVOLUTIONARY THOUGHTS

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;

Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. (Psalm 121:1-4)

Our home planet has once again finished its journey around the sun, simul-taneously spinning on its own axis three hundred and sixty five times. In other words, one more year haspassed. Whether 2016 was memorable or forgettable for you, we now turn the page to 2017.

I can’t help but grow a bit anxious as I think about the New Year and all of the terrible and terrificthings that might happen. Maybe you feel the same way. Here are some thoughts to help us with our appre-hension.

1) No matter what happens this year, God will not be surprised. It comforts me to know that the God weworship is omniscient. He knows the future as clearly as He recalls the past.

2) No matter what happens this year, God will be here. It is equally comforting to know that the God weworship is omnipresent. He promises never to leave us or forsake us, and that He will be with us to theend of the age and beyond.

3) No matter what happens this year, God cares deeply. As comforting as it is that God knows all and iseverywhere—it is beyond comforting to live with the awareness that God loves me.

With these three observations in your back pocket, you are able to face anything. Not in your ownstrength, but in His. Did I neglect to mention that He is omnipotent? God’s power source never runs dry.Songwriter Don Moen, inspired by Psalm 121 wrote the lyrics…

He never sleeps, He never slumbers. He never tires of hearing our prayer.

When we are weak He becomes stronger. So rest in His love and cast all of your cares on Him.

My prayer at the beginning of this New Year is that, come what may, you will step out by faith in the

all-knowing, ever-present, all-powerful God, resting in His love for you. While the earth revolves again, let’s

do great things!

Darshan’s Soul Notes…

"Thriving in the Lord"

The weather was well below freezing, the hours were long and the work was tedious andrepetitive! And yet, I had not seen this kind of passion in my church family in a long time. Twenty-eight of our church members had traveled to Boone to work at Samaritan's Purse for OperationChristmas Child. The energy and the joy were palpable. I smiled as my packing partner took greatpride in trying to get as many shoeboxes into the shipping carton as he could! I rejoiced as a cou-ple, who would be baptized into our church family the next day, worked shoulder to shoulder withtheir fellow believers. A couple of our youth had joined and worked the eight hour shift with nocomplaints and great team work. We were all humbled as a former recipient of one of the shoe-boxes shared his story and testified to the faithfulness of our God! We joined together in prayerwith other believers from across the state as we laid hands on the boxes that would travel to southSudan. This was a picture of the church passionately at work for our Lord!

As I reflect on the pure joy and compassion that I experienced that day, I want to encourageeach one of us to thrive in our love for God in 2017! David says in Psalm 31:23-24 "Oh, love theLord, all you His saints! For the Lord preserves the faithful...Be of good courage, and He shallstrengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord." I know that many times as a follower of Je-

sus Christ, I "settle" for so much less than what God hasprepared for my life. As I experienced His grace and glo-ry on that cold day in Boone, it warmed my heart to over-flowing to realize what passion for God being fleshed outin service and love can look like in His faithful children. Ibelieve this kind of passion is the "first love" that Christwarns the church it has forsaken. He reminds the churchto "remember from where you have fallen; repent and dothe first works..." (Revelation 2: 4-5) Whatever we do inthe name of Christ in the new year, whether it is washingdishes, singing, loving your spouse, or just sharing life, may we do it with great compassion and love. And whenwe are tempted to "settle" for less, may we "look to Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy thatwas set before Him, endured the cross, despising theshame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne ofGod." (Hebrews 12:2) There, we will find good courageand great strength for our hearts to move forward in joy-ous hope!

You are the

salt of

the earth.Ma hew 5:13 Salt Box

"Change is hard at the beginning, messy in the middle, and gorgeous at the end."

As we begin a new year here at Quaker Gap, we are aware that minister-ing to young people has changed over the years, and it’s time for us to catch up

and change some of the things that we do to reach our young people. Everythingthat we do at Quaker Gap Baptist Church is done to glorify God, love His people

and grow Christ-like people. So with that being said, starting this month we are doing away with our

Sunday Night Bible Study. We will no longer meet on Sunday nights as a youthgroup. There are several reasons we are getting away from Sunday nights. The

main reason being we are the only part of our church that is currently meeting

regularly on Sunday nights, and this is truly a great opportunity for families tospend time together. With that said, we have created a NEW day and time for

our youth to gather and study The Word.Starting January 6th, we will kick-off "Parker's Basement." We are going

to continue to meet as a group under the same format, however we are going tochange the day and the location. This year we will meet on Friday nights in

Parker’s basement. We will continue to have Bible study with food and fellow-ship afterwards. However, changing the day will allow youth to invite their

friends after school, allow us to go out into the school system and be present in

our community, and allow us from time to time to extend the ending time, as thenext day is not a school day. Changing the location will provide the youth with a

safe place to be on Friday nights in a non-threating environment and for ouryouth to invite un-churched friends.

Also this year, we will be adding "The Upper Room". The Upper Roomis something that our high school youth have asked us to implement for some

time. After much prayer and consideration, we feel ready to implement thisidea. The inspiration behind The Upper Room is simple; The Upper Room is a

place where youth can come once a week and dig even deeper into the Word of

God. No games, no food, nothing but the Word of God. We are planning to kickthis off on Monday, January 9th, in Parker's office in the Annex from 6:15 – 7:00

PM. This is open to the youth that are ready to dive deep into the Word of God.It is not meant to be an outreach or to invite your unchurched friends to... this is

for the serious believer. Wednesday and Friday are opportunities to invitefriends!

Finally, this year we are going to add "The Youth Corner" board to ourchurch area. We are going to put up a board in our church building that will

keep the church informed on what is going on in our Youth Department. We

will highlight upcoming events, and have a small article about a different youththat is actively involved in our youth ministry, so that you, the church, can really

get to know our Salt-Teens youth.Change is hard... "But if nothing ever changed, there would be no butter-

flies." Thank you for allowing us to morph what we do at Quaker Gap in orderto better serve our young people. It may be a little bumpy at the beginning but

stick with us...the fruit from this change is going to be good!

Serving HIM,

Daniel Parker

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You......very much!

Quaker Gap Baptist Church Family,

Thank you for your thoughts and pray-

ers for Moma and our family during her de-

cline and during her final week on this

earth. Quaker Gap Baptist Church was not

only her church home, but was also very spe-

cial to her...where she raised her four chil-

dren, and taught us to love the Lord, where

she buried her mother, father, two brothers,

and her husband. (It is) where she loved to

serve and worship. Singing in the choir was

important, but choir practice was also a spe-

cial time for her.

Thank you for the food you provided

for her visitation and the appreciation and

joy of doing it since she had participated in

the same for so many. Quaker Gap Baptist

Church is also home base for all of us whether

we are there or elsewhere, know that we sup-

port and pray for Quaker Gap Baptist Church

to be that “light” winning souls in a dark

world.

Thank you very much for the donation

to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter in her

memory.

Love,

Kathleen’s family

Kathy & Tom, Ronnie & Merle,

Joan, and Jerry
