I see a lot of local players doing quite a bit to help promote pool here in the valley. It really shows what a great community we have when people all do what they can to help.

On the other hand, I still see people talking about what they are doing to help promote pool, when what they are really doing is promoting themselves.

I realize that everyone helps in their own way, and it takes all of us helping to make the game better. Just dont hurt your arm patting yourself on the back over all you are doing for the game, when you are, in reality, doing it for yourself.

    -Until next time Mike

Balancad Back In Knobbys Winners Circle

Burt Balancad returned to the winners circle at Knobbys 9 & Under 8-Ball Tournament on December 4th.

Balancad cruised through the winners side and took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Jose Gonzalez.

On the one loss side, Gonzalez ran into Troy Ridder. After a first round loss, Ridder had put together a six match winning streak on the left side of the board. That streak would end when Ridder jumped the cue ball off the table at 1-1 against Gonzalez, and was forced to watch Jose run out the rack for the 2-1 win.

The final rematch between Balancad and Gonzalez saw Balancad win 2-1, with an 8-ball break at hill-hill, in the first set.

Complete Payouts:1st Burt Balancad $2202nd Jose Gonzalez $1203rd Troy Ridder $604th Gilbert Franco $20

Mike Kounkel took first place, but Chris Negrin was the big winner, at Kolbys Christmas Chip Tournament on December 19th.

The chip tournament is the creation of Chris Adams, who held similar tournaments outside of Arizona in the past. He has brought the idea to Kolbys and it has been a huge success so far. The tournament has each player being given a number of chips (or lives) based on their rating. The lower the rating, the more chips a player starts with. Matches are one game of 9-ball, with the winner staying on the table to face the next player on the waiting list. The loser of the match loses a chip and goes to the bottom of the wait-ing list (if they still have chips left). The tourna-ment format is skewed towards the lower rated players, as the top players dont have the chips to take many losses, and the law of averages always catches up to them. Case in point, Ben Suther-land won twelve straight games at this event, and failed to cash in the tournament.

Adams has been running this format as a weekly event on Monday nights, so all of the players have grown quite familiar with the format. With that in mind, it was no surprise to see a turnout of 55 players ready to compete on this day. Even with a field that large, the tournament was over in under 12 hours and even had time to stop in the middle for a big rack contest.

Adams and his assistant tournament director, Josh Stinnett, had things moving smoothly all day with six tables in action non-stop, as well as a separate challenge table that saw a long wait-ing of list of players looking to stay on the table for as long as they could.

As players started falling out of the field, it was

the lower rated players who continued to excel. With five players left in the field, not one top rated player was left. A random drawing was held to determine matches that saw Jesse Gardella defeat Jake Powell, Mike Kounkel eliminate Becky Onnembo and Tara Negrin get a bye into the next round. The next round saw three players left, and Kounkel defeated Negrin, while Gardella got the bye. The final round saw Koun-kel beat Gardella for first place.

In addition to the main event, challenge table and numerous raffles throughout the day, the players also enjoyed a big rack challenge that saw the players earn chances to break a 10-ball rack with a prize awarded for each ball they could make after a successful break. After many players found them-selves unable to make a ball on the break, it was Chris Negrin who would make a ball and then run four balls to earn $548 in prize money.

Adams commented after the tournaments completion that the success of the event was largely due to the great sponsors that came on board. He expressed his thanks to G Cue Billiards, Mo Money Pawn Shop, Carl Stewart with the Az Billiards Academy, Hustlin USA, Crescent Distributors and Balabushka Pool Cues.

Wayne Larson and Evans Bishop were the big winners at Main Street Billiards on December 5th and 6th at two different eight man 9s only events. Both days saw eight players pay a $200 entry to face off against some of the best 9-rated players that the valley has to offer.

The December 5th event saw Wayne Larson score wins over Rick Armbrust and Chad Barber, before a lopsided 9-4 win over Chris Adams for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Mike Williams was squeaking by players but staying alive. Williams lost his second match of the day to Adams 9-7, but scored three wins by the narrowest of margins on the one loss side. A 9-8 win over Chris Paradowski was followed by a 9-7 win over Jack Scerca and then a hill-hill win over Adams in the semi-final match.

The extended final match saw Larson hold off Williams in another close match. This one was 13-10 in Larsons favor.

December 6th saw eight more 9-rated players ready to do battle. Evans Bishop got his day started with back-to-back hill-hill wins over Ben Sutherland and then Tres Kane. After those two tight matches, the 9-6 win over John Ritonya for the hot-seat must have felt relaxing.

JR Burkhart started his day with a 9-7 loss to Bill Vander Weyst, but the loss didnt phase him. Burkhart put together a winning streak of four matches, with wins over Tyler Fleishman, Tres Kane, Vander Weyst and Ritonya to earn his spot in the finals.

The final was another extended single set, with Bishop cruising to a 13-6 win and first place.

Saturday Payouts:1st Wayne Larson $10002nd Mike Williams $600

Sunday Payouts:1st Evans Bishop $10002nd JR Burkhart $600

Oz & Gee Win at Kolbys

Oscar Avila & Jamie Gee teamed up for first place at Kolbys 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on December 5th.

The field was smaller than expected, so the teams agreed to change the tour-nament format from double elimination to round robin. Two teams quickly distanced themselves from the pack as Avila & Gee, as well as Mark Koerner & Tami Hathcock were untouchable, remaining undefeated until the last round of play.

As is usually the case in round robin events, the two teams in contention for the tournament win played each other in the final round. One of the teams would have to take their first loss, and that team was Mark & Tami, as they lost to Oz & Jamie.

Complete Payouts:1st Oscar Avila & Jamie Gee $150 (no side pots)2nd Mark Koerner & Tami Hathcock $110 (with side pots)

    Player Profile - Jaye Succo

    By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Playing Cue - I shoot with a Players Cue that came with a PureX HXT Low Deflection Shaft. It has a Kamui Black soft tip. It works for me and thats all that matters.

Break cue - My break cue is also a Play-ers Cue. I used to shoot with this cue before I bought the one I use now. This cue, I added more weight, and by mistake, my good friend Lynor Johnson, decided to use this cue for her bridge at an AWBT stop at Bullshooters. By ac-cident, she pulled her bridge off, along with my tip, so she purchased a harder tip for me, I just cant remember what the name is. Roger then put it on for me and now its my break cue,

Shaft Taper - My taper is 11.75 with a inch ferrule but thinking of switching up to a 12.75.

Chalk- I use Predator 1080 pure blue chalk. I feel it grabs more and I definitelyhave less miscues. Only downside is, it leaves more on my hand than what the Master chalk did.

Case - My case, I got from Cue and Case. Nothing special, just a simple 3x6 case.Although, Im definitely looking into pur-chasing a soft case. Only because perhaps its lighter!

How did you choose that one? I thought it looked cool and I thought it made me look like a Pool player. (laughing) Its definitely not Ve-gas friendlyIts too heavy.

Player Bio - I am a born and raised, green chili eating, New Mexican. I am a Navajo, who comes from a small community in the Eastern part of the Navajo Nation called White Rock, NM. Pool was never a part of my life until I moved to Great Falls, Montana. Winters are so cold that nobody goes outside. Everyone staysindoors and the pool hall is where everyone was at. In 2006, I had a friend who invited me to her APA league one night and I was immediately HOOKED! It was there that I learned. I spent a lot of time at the 8 Ball In. Literally fromopen to close. I learned a lot by watching oth-

ers. I had several mentors there, Art St. Germaine and his wife, Veronica, also Sky Cristadora (for-merly Tigart), she was and is still, one of the best fe-males in the 406. I also watched and studied Jana Montour from Canada. Im proud to say I have a 2007 Womens B State Championship under my belt and several Team and Top Female/Top Shooter APA awards there. All in all, I have to say I have a lot of respect for the pool community of the BigSky Country.

I moved to Arizona in July 2011 with my part-ner, Summer, for better opportunities and also because I wanted to join the AWBT. For real! When I left MT, I said I wanted to become a pro, and Arizona was my only opportunity. I already knew the competition I would be facing here as I did my research on the women here. I already knew who the top ladies were and I wanted to be right up there with them. (yes, I really did my research) So far its been 4 years on the tour. Ive had my short lived WPBA membership, Ive played in the WPBA Region-al Tour Championship here at Bullshooters in 2014, This year I finished 5th in points without playing in the last 2 stops, but the high for the AWBT has to be winning a stop in my 2nd year against Bernie Store. Playing and winning the hot seat match against her, being down I think 4 or 5 games and then coming back to win in the finals. That was a great feeling, but she is still numero uno in my book.

Currently, I shoot in the BCA Paradise Pool League. I also participate in local tournaments and am sitting in 3rd on the AZ Hustlers 7s

list. Nationally, I am rated an Advanced Player. Moving forward, I am always striving to better my game. The drive, the hungry, the competi-tor, the underdog in me wants more and there is only one way to go, and thats UP!

Where do you play I truly have to give a lot of credit to Natalie and her crew at Skip and Jans. I spent a lot of time practicing at the old place. I had my lessons there with Mitch Eller-man, I won my first 6s tournament there as a 5, and I won my first AWBT Tour Stop there. So Skip and Jans has to get a lot of credit from me.

Currently, Kolbys Corner Pocket is where I call Home. Jimmy Langston is doing a lot for the players there. Bringing in 2 more 9 foot Dia-monds (so 4 in total), and in the midst of bring-ing in Diamond Bar Box tables. It has a great atmosphere. The food is great. You know for sure there is always some kind of action going on there.

My favorite games - My BEST game is Bar Box 8 ball, but my FAVORITE game is 9 ball on the 9 foot table because that is where the gamble is at.

    Whose Rules Should Rule?

    By Roger LongCertified Instructor

One of the worlds top pros recently posted a rant on Facebook concerning the rules of 9-Ball. His main complaint was that pool is the only sport (to his knowledge) where the rules differ depending on the particular event or locale. He claimed that the rules should be standardized across the board for both profes-sionals and amateurs, and of course, went on to spell out his own preferences for specific rules. Not surprisingly, he also maintained that all pool tables should be made to one set of specs. In his opinion, pools non-standardization of rules and equipment is the primary reason it does not enjoy a level of success equivalent to that of other professional sports.

Before we go any further here, lets clarify one thing: rules are not standardized in all other sports. Im not familiar with every sport out there, but I do know that rules are not exactly the same for professionals and amateurs in football and basketball. And no one seems to mind.

    Back to 9-Ball.

I picked up on what the Facebook pro was actually saying, even though his message was veiled. It was his penchant for certain rules that gave him away. Whenever someone suggests that 9-Ball should be played on tight-pocketed tables under rules that require you to call every shot, and the 9 pocketed on the break gets spot-

ted, plus, the 9-ball needs to be racked on the spot when using the Magic Rack, means only one thing: luck will be greatly diminished, if not totally eliminated.

Not a bad idea, you say? No, not if youre a top pro. But what if youre not one?

When Texas Express rules were introduced decades ago, the game of 9-Ball quickly be-came very popular all across the nation. Those rules not only sped the game up, they also introduced elements of luck that made lesser-skilled players feel like they had a realistic shot at winning, no matter who they were play-ing. And quite often, they did. Bangers could constantly ride the 9 for a quick win, or they could slop balls in and keep shooting, or they might miss their intended pocket for the money ball and have it go multiple rails into a differ-ent pocket and still take down the cash. Texas Express made the game wild and crazy and a whole lot of fun for a whole lot of people.

Now we are seeing the pros attitudes affect-ing those of the upper-ranked amateurs. Thats really nothing new since the top amateurs have always liked to mimic the pros and lament how they, too, could have been a pro if they hadnt gotten married, had children, taken a job, and bought a house and a car, or two. But being amateurs hasnt stopped them from thinking they actually shoot like pros and that

they should demand all the same things the pros demand. As an example, the other day I overheard one of our local players reciting all the luck-eliminating rules he would require his winter-visitor opponent to use in their upcom-ing 9-Ball match. Even though the rules were new and strange to the visitor, he still won the match. But the victory didnt come without a price. The visitor had to endure two hours of listening to the local telling him how he was getting every lucky roll in the book. If thats the way its going to be, what is the point in trying to take all luck out of the game if the loser is still going to claim that his opponent beat him with luck? Apparently, some things will never change.

But think about it: if the best players in the world get their way and force wholesale changes in rules and equipment that favor only themselves; where will the incentive be for lesser-skilled players to continue to compete against them? Do they really think that the world wants to see the same handful of players winning everything, every time?

So, do we really need one set of rules to cover all occasions? And do we need one type of table for all players? Or would it be best to leave the amateurs to their tables and rules while letting the pro organizations figure out whats best for the pros? Is a definitive differ-ence between the two groups such a bad thing?

Arizona Billiard & Dart News January 2016

The Annual Toys for Tots tournament held on December 13th at Bullshooters was a big success again this year. Players from all over the valley participated in the charity event and everyone had a great time playing pool and enjoying time with their friends. The annual charity event raised 2 truckloads of toys and fun for the valleys underprivileged children this year. There were a lot of new faces this year as well as the players who have been coming out every year to support this great event. Gina Nowlin, the APA league operator here in Phoenix says this event is the final highlight of the year for her. Anytime you can give back to the community its a good thing, and the generos-ity of the valley pool players is just phenomenal. APA and Bullshooters has been putting this event on for over 10 years now and it is growing each and every year. The best thing about this event is you do not have to be a part of any league or group to participate. Players from all over are welcome to play. In fact, for the second time in 2 years, we have a gentleman from the Midwest fly to Phoenix to play in the event, said Gina. Actually, Bob Reeves comes out to visit family during the holidays but has attended the tourna-ment for his second year in a row. The Toys for Tots annual tournament is sponsored by Bullshooters and the APA at Bullshooters pool hall in Phoenix each year just before Christmas and benefits the less fortunate kids here locally. It is part of the same campaign put on by the United States Marine Corps, who ultimately distributes the toys that are col-lected. The entry to the tournament is a new, unwrapped toy to be donated, and $10 entry fee used as the prize fund for the players. Its such a great event, said Gina. It is so good to see everyone come down and have a good time while doing something so important for someone else. The sportsmanship is so great. The Bates family at Bullshooters has always been so supportive of this event too. The event would not be the success it has become without them. The City of phoenix and the valley pool players are so lucky to have people like them and a place to go and hang out like Bullshooters. The tournament itself would not have been complete without Julie Bates famous taco bar. The food was amazing. Congratulations to Jerry Sisk for his first place finish in the tournament. He earned $160 for his effort. Coming in Second was David Rayner earning $100. 3rd place and $60 went to Scott Chadwick. The APA and Bullshooters would like to thank everyone for your participation. This event would not be possible without you the players.

APAs Junior Division held their tri-annual Junior/Adult tournament and awards ceremony on Sunday, December 20th at Bullshooters in Phoenix. The popular tournament is where the kids get to pick an adult of their choice to play in a scotch doubles match with opponents of the same skill level and age. This event is becoming one of the most popular tournaments that we run, said Gina Nowlin, APA league Operator for Maricopa County. Both the juniors and the Adults have a great time playing together as a team, she said. This event is a great way that parents and kids can spend an afternoon together having a good time doing something thats fun and safe.

The Juniors Division has grown to over 25 young players from all over the val-ley. There are two divisions for the juniors. The Young Guns division includes players from ages 11 to 17. The younger group, dubbed Junior Guns consist of shooters under the age of 11.

There were 16 teams who showed up to play for Plaques and gift cards this time around. As always, lunch was served to the players while the awards for the play-ers who excelled in the weekly division were being handed out.

Winners for the junior divisions Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles tournament this session were:First place James and Perfecto DiazSecond Place Shannon and Andrew ReinhartThird Place Troy and Tory Conley

Other awards received were first place -Top Gun to Michael Dale and Most improved player was Tory Conley. Junior Specialist, a brand new award, was given to Selena West for her help in acclimating the new Juniors and getting them excited about the program.

The Juniors play every other Sunday afternoon at Bullshooters in Phoenix and Main Street Billiards in Mesa. They play three sessions per year, ending each session with an awards ceremony, lunch, and then the coveted Junior/ Adult Scotch Doubles Tournament.

You can check the local website at www.apaphx.com for more information on this tournament. You can also check out our ad in this issue for date and time. We would like to invite everyone to come down and support the juniors. They are the future of our sport.

The two players did match up once, in the first match of the day for each player. That match went to Casey Smith.

Smith would keep his winning ways alive, and take the hot-seat with a hill-hill win over Joe Martinez.

Jackson was still alive on the one loss side, in the midst of a four match winning streak. He would take that streak to five, with a 6-3 win over Martinez in the semi-finals.

    Foos PulseFoosball News

    By Jim King

New Years HappeningsHappy New Year Phoenix foosers! Yes, its 2016 and its that time of the year when we all need to evaluate how 2015 treated us and to put plans and resolutions in place if we want to change anything, whether that is focused on foosball or any number of personal areas in our lives. Theres a quote by Tony Robbins that I like and is worth sharing. If you do what youve always done, youll get what youve always gotten. So, please take some time and see how you measured up during 2015 and take the initiative to change things since this is the time to do it. Make life count!

Foosball tourneys around Phoenix are continu-ing to draw a good number of participants and theres definitely ongoing growth and interest in our foosball community. More and more beginners and out of state players are showing up at events thanks primarily to our website, www.ArizonaFoosball.com and our continued word of mouth advertising.

    Phoenix Tour

The Phoenix Tour wrapped up its final venue on Sunday, December 13, after three months of intense competition where players compete in tournaments all around the Phoenix area and are rated for overall performance during a three month stretch of events. The Tour had a record 103 foosers of all skill levels participating and it continues to grow in popularity. Following are the results of the Tour.

Grand Champion Overall Points Leader: Bryan Hendricks (Pro)

Rookie Champion Points Leader: Bob Duncan (Amateur)

Sharpshooter Highest Average Score: Bryan Hendricks

Venue King Dukes Sports Bar: Nick Bour-dos (Pro)

Venue King Stingers Sport Bar: Bryan Hen-dricks Venue King The Loft Again: Bob Duncan $50 Bonus Winner: Rissa Veloso (Expert)

Congratulations to Bryan for taking the Phoe-nix Tour in back-to-back seasons!

    King of the Ring

For those of you not aware of what the King of the Ring is, its similar to the Phoenix Tour but is a singles tournament format with a unique twist to the playoff format, that being the top six finishing players (most points) are invited to a playoff in a handicapped round-robin for-mat. Pros must score 8, Experts 7, Amateurs 6, and Beginners 5. After the round-robin, the top two will square off in the final with the same handicap rules. However the finals are a goalies delight, meaning if you score from the pits (goalie area) you get the ball in the pits to start the next point. Currently the top six are:1. Nick Bourdos (Pro): 98 pts.2. Brad Chamberlain (Expert): 90 pts.3. Bob Duncan (Amateur): 85 pts.4. Jim King (Amateur): 83 pts.5. Pat Cain (Amateur): 60 pts.6. Michael Lawrence (Expert): 56 pts.

To date, weve had 44 foosers taking their shots at the final six playoff spots. This is definitely impressive since its an open format (non-handicap) and those of us with lesser skills end up playing against the better caliber players. This definitely forces us to improve our game but not sure of the effect it has on those better than ushmmmm. Also, since the inaugural season wraps up on January 8th, time is running out for anyone wanting to gain one of the top spots for entrance into this unique playoff format.

    Interim League/Saturday Scrimmages

The Interim League events are continuing each and every week at either Main Street Billiards or Dukes Sports Bar in the east valley on Wednesday evenings (7:00 PM) and at Sting-ers Sports Bar in the west valley on Saturday afternoons (3:00 PM), referred to as Saturday Scrimmages. Both events continue to draw good numbers of players and are very popular venues due to using the league handicap rating system. Its a great way to keep up with league action, meet new players and new teammates, and just have some fun. Formats primarily al-

ternate between Bring Your Partner (BYP) and Draw Your Partner (DYP).Currently weve had 55 foosers playing in these events and the top 10 with the highest winning percentages are:

    1. Bryan Hendricks: 0.9682. Rick Weirman: 0.8163. Brain Sternberg: 0.7694. Chris Petit: 0.7395. Steve Mathews: 0.6886. Rissa Veloso: 0.6837. Bob Duncan: 0.6728. Paul Freund: 0.6679. Del Compton: 0.64810. Travis Hubred: 0.641

Keep in mind that the Saturday Scrimmages have been targeted for new and rookie play-ers and will feature weekly lessons by local experts and professionals. The Arizona Foos-ball League point handicapping system will be utilized, allowing both veterans and rookies to participate on an even field. Incentives will also be provided for directors to enlist new players. Players will be able to register for events and check the interest list (other play-ers interested in playing) both online and via text message. Event types may change from week to week, so be sure to check the Coming Events section on the website for the latest information. And make sure you are registered in order to receive notifications of new events and to enable easy register-by-text.Miscellaneous

Late breaking news! Ive heard from a fairly reliable source that we will be hosting the largest ever Arizona state championships. The specific time frame is still being worked but we will be letting everyone know as soon as the details are available. So, continue sharpening your skills and, better yet, grab your wraps and head to a tourney near you.

Another tournament to be aware of is the upcoming 2016 Hall of Fame Classic being held at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas March 9th 13th. Reservations are being accepted through February 7th.

If anyone is interested in getting involved in any of the previously mentioned venues in any capacity, visit www.ArizonaFoosball.com and register using the current signup sheet, post in our forums, or contact Bill Nolan at 602-751-8818. In addition, you can get the latest and greatest details on any foos related activities at this same awesome site.
