Winter set in early this year, and while some of us delight in getting into skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skating, pond hockey – the list goes on – for others, the long cold winter brings on a case of the doldrums.

A sure cure for the winter blahs and a way to achieve that balance of outdoor and indoor entertainment is to plan ahead and enjoy some great experiences that will warm your heart and delight your soul. Studies show that more enduring happiness is derived from buying experiences and that anticipation is a key driver of that happiness. In other words, experiential purchases like all those outdoor activities, trips, concerts, movies, etc., tend to trump material purchases. If that’s indeed the case, our Rose Theatre subscribers and patrons are certain to be a very happy group!

Lots to Enjoy This Winter at The Rose!

We have a lineup of performances in February guaranteed to heighten your level of anticipation – and therefore your happiness. Kicking things off February 1 is Alan Doyle, out on his own after fronting Great Big Sea for the past 20 years. On February 12 the Veterans of Saturday Night Live: Rob Schneider & Jon Lovitz promise an epic night of stand-up comedy.

But laughing your way through February doesn’t stop there. Grab your BFF, mother, sisters, the girls from the office and head to Girls Night the Musical on February 21. Audience members (yes, men included) can’t help but laugh and even sing and dance in the aisles to hit songs of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s.

Come in from the cold or shake off your winter melancholy on February 19 with Playing for Change Live, a movement created to inspire, connect and bring peace to the world through music. It’s something completely different the entire family will enjoy. Say good-bye to February on the 27th with Classic Albums Live: Creedence Clearwater Revival – Chronicle, Vol. 1 – named one of Rolling Stone magazine’s Greatest Albums of All Time.

There shouldn’t be any winter blues in Brampton this year! For those who really want to ramp up the happiness quotient be sure to check out our lineup of shows for March and April. Whether it’s comedy or dance, rock or jazz – we’ve got it for you at the Rose Theatre in 2015!

Ride to The Rose a Great Hit with Seniors

Our group ticket sales are ahead of last year with many groups coming to the Rose Theatre for the first time. As part of the theatre’s community outreach, the Ride to The Rose program has expanded to accommodate more seniors’ groups. This program provides free wheelchair-accessible transportation to seniors, including pickup at their retirement residence or designated meeting spot, with an escort on every bus, mobility support and discounted tickets. Plus, Brampton seniors have the opportunity to socialize and attend special talkback sessions with the artists and performers. To learn how your group can take advantage of this program, contact Sylvia Eng at 905.793.7073.

Arts Adventures at The Rose

Did you know that the Rose Theatre has an extensive education program? Arts Adventures reaches hundreds of schools and thousands of students in Peel Region. We had a record number of students participate in the program last year and expect to exceed that number in 2015. We offer shows for students from junior kindergarten through Grade 12. It’s easy to get your child’s classroom exposed to arts and culture. Simply contact Kristine Pettipas at 905.793.4841 or visit the Education page at www.rosetheatre.ca.

2015 Off to a Great Start Thanks to You

As always we greatly appreciate you, our theatre patrons, sponsors and donors, for your continued enthusiasm for our Rose Theatre Presents performances and for our programs designed to promote cultural and artistic vibrancy in our community. I have had the opportunity to chat with many of you in the lobby before or after performances, but I would love to hear from you and get your feedback anytime. Please send me a note with your comments, thoughts and ideas at the email address below. I look forward to connecting with you in 2015.

in the mid-’80s, Joby rogers was a teenager performing at kids’ birthday parties. he’d show up with balloons and a boom box – dressed as Michael Jackson – and dance in the kitchen.

At that time he had no idea this would be his calling.

In fact, his career as a Michael Jackson tribute artist started somewhat by accident. He was 17 and called upon by friends, who were performing a break dance show at a local high school, to help them out. They needed someone to be Michael Jackson.

“I wasn’t even an entertainer at that time,” said Rogers.

But he indulged his friends, learned some basic popping and breaking moves during rehearsals in a pal’s basement, and off he went to his first show.

Not long after that, they booked another gig at a junior prom.

Now 30 years later, Rogers is still booking gigs and emulating MJ’s classic moves and grooves – but at places like

the State Farm Arena in Texas and other massive venues.

Despite taking his show worldwide – the U.S., U.K., Asia, South America, to name a few places where he has a following – the Rose Theatre performance will be his only Canadian stop on this tour, and only his second time performing in this country. Bringing his show to a new audience is an exciting part of his work, he said.

“I’m celebrating 30 years this year as a tribute artist, and it’s still one of the biggest thrills of my life,” said Rogers. “In ’84 I was doing children’s birthday parties. Now I’m playing for venues of 5,000 people. It’s quite remarkable.”

He calls his show The Ultimate MJ Experience, and that’s exactly what he delivers.

It’s 75 minutes of Michael Jackson’s greatest hits, all the way from the King of Pop’s early days in the Jackson 5 to the end of his career, with a big focus on the ’80s. He’s perfected the classic moves Michael Jackson coined, and though

there is a band playing some of the music live, Rogers does lip sync the lyrics.

He’s not a singer, he said, but you’ll be too busy watching his signature moves like the moonwalk. He’s also joined on stage by dancers – for The Rose show, there will be four.

Audience favourites, he said, tend to be “Billie Jean” and “The Way You Make Me Feel”. His personal favourite is “Man in the Mirror,” but he’s also sweet on “Smooth Criminal” and the Jackson 5 medleys.

In addition to the music and the dancers, the show includes a never-before-seen video played through the more extensive costume changes.

Rogers notes he’s the only tribute artist to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine – he was one of the figures on the front of the 1999 millenium issue. And his credits don’t stop there. He was personally endorsed by Michael Jackson back in 2003.

“In 2003 I received a letter from Michael Jackson. He was looking for an impersonator to cover for him at

an event. His agent reached out to 116 different tribute artists, but Michael Jackson personally chose my videotape,” he said. “It really gives (what I do) validation, that it wasn’t a waste of 30 years. It’s really quite an honour.”

Though he never got to meet MJ face to face, he did receive one of the star’s platinum Thriller albums from the King of Pop himself, and he got the opportunity to meet Michael Jackson’s brothers during their show at the Apollo Theatre.

Rogers said the one thing he does differently from the music icon is that he interacts with the audience, both during and after the show. He usually holds a meet and greet, “And that’s something MJ didn’t do,” he said.

He’s thrilled he can give the MJ experience, and from what his audiences say, they are too.

“For many people I’m their first [live Michael Jackson experience]. A lot of times people get very emotional. They tell me, ‘Thank you for keeping Michael’s legacy alive.’”

nearly 45 years after the breakup of pop music’s most influential band, the Beatles, more than a dozen acts are offering their recreationist vision of the Fab Four’s history through multiple live shows.

But only one is doing sid’s version. rePlAy the Beatles is a Montreal-based Beatles tribute

band that tells John, Paul, george and ringo’s history with its new show fab 4 ever, through promoter sid Bernstein’s eyes.

Bernstein, who died in August 2013 at the age of 95, was the first American promoter who brought the Beatles across the Atlantic from liverpool, and was also a trailblazer for realizing that the lovable Mop tops had an audience sizeable enough that he could fill stadiums if he could book them.

having the foresight to contact the band’s manager Brian epstein in 1963 when he caught wind of their exploding popularity in the u.K., Bernstein booked the Beatles into a sold-out house at carnegie hall in 1964 followed by their landmark appearance at shea stadium.

it was the first volley of the British invasion. When spurred on by the Beatles’ success, Bernstein organized the first u.s. tours and appearances by the rolling stones, the Kinks, the Moody Blues and herman’s hermits.

it’s Bernstein’s story that inspires rePlAy the Beatles’ latest multimedia extravaganza, says group founder John

oriettas, who plays the role of Paul Mccartney.he says he came up with the show after reading Bernstein’s

autobiography It’s sid Bernstein Calling.“After reading sid’s book i just realized how much i

didn’t know about that part of the Beatles’ career and story,” oriettas explains. “All the behind-the-scenes stuff that happened between sid, his agency (general Artists corporation, or gAc), Brian epstein, ed sullivan, etc., in order for the Beatles to actually perform in America was incredible. it almost didn’t happen. i had to let others know. so i created the show fab 4 ever.”

oriettas, who shares the stage with ricardo Branchini (John), Jean-françois cyr (george) and ted doyle (ringo) says the two-hour fab 4 ever differs from the original rePlAy the Beatles concept.

“our original tribute show is more of a straightforward Beatles concert,” says oriettas. “however, the show fab 4 ever, inspired by sid’s book, has a storyline, uses multimedia, videos, slides and our band rePlAy to tell the entire story, kind of like a rockumentary in four parts with costumes. People will leave the show knowing some things [about the Beatles] they had no idea about.”

the Bernstein adaptation is a personal one for oriettas. A few years ago, a mutual friend of the two who was

living in new york city sparked the meeting. even at his advanced age, Bernstein still kept track of Beatles tribute bands and was aware of rePlAy, and reached out to oriettas through that friend. Bernstein sent him an autographed copy of his book, and they became friends. By incorporating Bernstein’s story into fab 4 ever, oriettas is keeping two legacies alive.

And after 12 years of fronting so by incorporating Bernstein’s story into fab 4 ever, oriettas is keeping two legacies alive. And after 12 years of fronting rePlAy the Beatles, oriettas is still jazzed to be playing such favourites as “i Want to hold your hand,” “All you need is love,” “let it Be” and “hey Jude.”

“it really is a lot of fun and an honour to pay tribute to the greatest band of all time,” affirms oriettas. “it’s not something we take lightly. We have been doing it for many years now in other bands, and 12 years as rePlAy.

“to be honest, it doesn’t get old for us. every night is a new audience, a new venue, a new experience, and it feels fresh and exciting each time for us.

“We love what we do and the audience feels that energy from us, and it’s a mutual transfer of energy. We get a lot of pleasure seeing people’s faces during our show and then all the smiling faces afterward.”

she’s back.sister, that

is. she’s back and you’d best not be tardy when you arrive at her “classroom” at the rose theatre for Late nite Catechism (LnC) 2: sister strikes Again!

there are rules to follow while sister is in charge – chewing

gum, chitter-chatter and tardiness will not be tolerated by the heavy-handed, irrepressible

15BOX OFFICE 905.874.2800 rosetheatre.ca

sister played by Kim richards.naughty students will be reprimanded – maybe even on

stage – but there are prizes for students who do well in class.“this show is a lot of fun,” said richards, who plays sister and

has done so for over a thousand performances in the seven-show series. “it’s a throwback to the third grade. it’s very strict and really whips you into shape, but it’s a little more relaxed. for instance, you could be ‘Bill’ instead of ‘William’ here.”

the premise of the show is to bring the audience back to catholic school days with the instruction of sister, a witty, wise, and wacky nun who quickly hands out punishments and rewards to her students.

she says if you don’t want to be punished, “then just behave yourself. if you call attention to yourself, then i’m going to see that. i’m like a motion detector.”

And while the loosely played-out script is steeped in references to the catholic religion, it’s not stuffy or uptight in the least.

“it’s a tribute to the catholic religion while poking a little lighthearted fun at it,” said richards, who is a catholic offstage as well. “none of it is going to offend anyone. not at all.”

But you don’t have to be catholic to enjoy it. the humour is universal.

“so many people come back to me after the show and tell me how much they actually got out of it,” she said. “they usually say things like, ‘i didn’t think i was actually going to learn anything from this show!’”

it’s part comedy, part improv, part theatre and part interaction. there’s nothing else like it and no two performances are the same.

“it’s completely unique,” richards said. “no two shows are ever the same because the audience drives it.”

the show is definitely geared towards adults though, she said. for instance, in lnc2 – richards’ favourite of the seven lnc shows – sister offers a hysterical perspective on heaven and hell with her catholic version of chutes and ladders. she also offers her personal list of sins for the new millennium, and delivers her “lessons” using comedic banners, filmstrips, handouts and more.

it’s the show’s spontaneity that wins over the audience and, although it has a script, richards masterfully uses her improv skills to deliver sharp responses and in-the-moment humour.

she says this year is “lucky number 13” for her with lnc, and she continues to travel 40 weeks a year to bring sister to cities across north America.

Before becoming sister in 2001, richards had a lengthy career in the performing arts. it may be hard to believe – especially once you see her portrayal of sister – but richards started her career in four-inch heels as a vegas dancer.

“i started dancing in las vegas when i was 17, but i never, ever danced topless,” she said. “i did a couple of years in circus circus, but if you are a dancer in vegas and refuse to dance topless, eventually you end up on the [street].”

initially trained in ballet she made her living dancing jazz for 15 years, and eventually moved on to do stand-up and improv. she studied with several different teachers and then took acting classes.

“i was thrilled that after dancing all those years, i was able to cross over and do acting,” she said.

And though she’s involved with many other theatre projects, it’s clear the Late nite Catechism gig has become quite the “habit.”

stRing Music like you’ve neveR seen beFoRe

if you’re a fan of the violin, then you’ll want to put a large red circle around January 29 in your 2015 calendar. tell your friends you’re busy and book the sitter for the kids now, because string sensations Bowfire are coming to Brampton.

dubbed a “total string experience,” the 11 musicians in Bowfire do to string music what riverdance did to the irish jig.

they take a much-loved art form and update it for the 21st century, along the way adding a thumping drumbeat, dramatic lighting and more than a touch of theatricality.

if your image of a violinist is a slightly portly man in a tux performing in a brightly lit hall or a cheery fiddler playing drinking tunes in an east coast bar, then you’re in for a pleasant surprise. sharply dressed – often all in black – the agile performers in Bowfire cut a dash as they bound around the stage playing violin at a frenetic pace beneath a pulsating light show.

With a flair for the dramatic, they have a habit of finishing with their bows held vertically aloft in acknowledgement of the audience’s applause – a move vaguely reminiscent of something the four Musketeers might do after coming out on top in a fight.

According to founder and artistic director lenny solomon, that sense of showmanship is central to the band’s appeal.

solomon believes artists like lady gaga, whose concerts rival Broadway spectaculars in their elaborate staging, have led audiences to raise their expectations higher than ever. virtuoso violin playing is no longer enough on its own. these days, you’ve got to look as good as you sound.

“like it or not, when you step onto the stage, you are in competition with acts that have over-the-top production values,” he says.

17BOX OFFICE 905.874.2800 rosetheatre.ca

“today, if you go to see even a band like Blue rodeo, the set is just amazing.”

one of the moments from a Bowfire show that lives in the memory long after the lights have gone down is a performance by violinists stephanie cadman and linsey Beckett. the pair play together while step dancing. it’s a display of musical multitasking that is truly breathtaking and one solomon calls a “centrepiece of the show.”

“the audience always gets really excited at the incredible co-ordination it takes. you have high-level step dancing and very technical fiddle playing both brought together,” says solomon.

solomon brought Bowfire together nearly 15 years ago and the band first performed in public at expo 2000 in hanover, germany. they have been impressing audiences around the world ever since.

the words “diverse” and “eclectic” don’t come near to encompassing the breathtaking range of musical styles Bowfire crams into a single show. they perform classical music cheek-by-jowl with rock, flit from bluegrass and texas swing to the celtic tunes of Western europe, and hop back across the Atlantic for a spot of cape Breton and ottawa valley fiddling. if you can play it using a string and a bow, then it’s probably in their repertoires.

the diversity in Bowfire’s music is likely a result of solomon’s vision for the group. As an accomplished jazz violinist who has been performing since the 1970s, solomon says he found himself constantly bumping into performers who, despite playing the violin in wildly different ways, were each nonetheless astonishingly talented.

“i always thought it would be amazing to put all these disparate styles of performers in one room and see what comes out,” he says.

And so he did. Among the performers in Bowfire is shane cook, one of

canada’s finest ottawa valley-style fiddlers who has a mantelpiece groaning under the weight of the awards he has received, and Miranda Mulholland, who as well as playing the violin also has a sensational singing voice.

each member of Bowfire also has their own solo career and is involved with other groups. the ensemble crafts its concerts from the highlights of each performer’s repertoire, making it a lineup of showstopping tunes. Mulholland’s celtic singing tugs at the heartstrings while solomon himself does an impressive version of the blues number “goin’ to chicago.”

As a performer, solomon likens the ensemble to an “ongoing workshop” where specialists in a diverse range of styles get together and create. for the audience, it’s a chance to see strings played like never before.
