President’s Message

2015 has arrived and with it a whole year of possibilities. What are your quilting resolutions? Mine include finishing my consignment quilt but first I have to find it. How can someone misplace an entire twin size quilt? It is quilted and I was just putting on the binding. Perhaps when my company is all gone I will remember where I put it to get it out of the way. If you have some news you would like to share with your fellow FKQG members so they can share in your pleas-ure, write me at

[email protected] or call 941-485-9755. Let’s Share! State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) Fine Art Gallery, in association with the Mathematics Department, and the Department of Art, Design, Humanities, and with assistance from SCF Pride in Excellence (P.I.E.), presents, “Square Roots: A Quilted Manifesto, A John Sims Project” in its Spring 2015 exhibition.

“Square Roots: A Quilted Manifesto” seeks to explore the connections between mathematical and artistic process by using the vocabulary of design and function as an entry for a more ex-panded and palatable mathematical art experi-ence. And, because the number Pi, 3.14159… plays a central role in the creation of the work, the exhibition will extend beyond Pi Day, 3/14/15, in the year of Pi.

Exhibit dates are Jan. 23 – March 27; closed March 9-13 for Spring Break. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday - Friday. For more in-formation, call Joe Loccisano, gallery manager, at 941-752-5225. Maps and directions are online at scf.edu/maps.

Pam Morris’ show “MANgroves” at the Venice Public Library on Nokomis Ave, Venice, will hang in the main room and the meeting room off the children’s room Jan. 5 to March 31, 2015.

Education Notes

Elva Farrell

There’s still time to sign up for one of Kathy McNeil’s appliqué classes. Registration is closed for the Animal Boutique class on Saturday; however, Kathy has indicated that if you sign up for The Wonderful World of Landscape Quilts class on Monday and would rather work with one of the animal patterns you may. She says the techniques are the same and she will give individual attention to those working on an-imals as well as the landscape patterns. After signing up you will need to order your pattern directly from Kathy, prior to the class. Kathy is a very talented quilter and pattern designer whose bubbly personality makes her a joy as a teacher. Consider taking either her De-sign Dynamics or Landscape Quilts class. And, if you’ve thought about Jane Davila’s classes in February now’s the time to register. Jane is an author, an artist, a designer, an educa-tor and most importantly—a quilter! Jane teach-es art quilting and surface design internationally. Have you ever thought about embellishing your quilt but aren’t familiar with all the possi-bilities? Then this class is for you. In the Sur-face Design Sampler class you’ll play with a large variety of materials and supplies - paints-tiks, decolourants, assorted inks, mediums, paints, stamp pads, foil, smooch, angelina fibers and powders - more than a dozen in all. This class is the perfect chance to try out all of the hot new supplies. No pressure, just play! And, the Outer Limits class is another op-portunity to learn a variety of techniques for fin-ishing the edges of your quilts. While some of the techniques are specific to art quilts many are also applicable to your traditional quilts. This class introduces an assortment of at least 20 dif-ferent ways to finish the edges of your quilts, using hand and machine sewing as well as non-traditional materials and supplies. Think outside the quilt!

“Quilts for Cruisers” Cass Bowen

We are going to continue with our “Quilts for Cruisers” program in the year 2015. Our total of delivered quilts was 66 for the year. I have con-tacted the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Dept. and we will be working with them. The quilts will go to their Crimes Against Children Division who work closely with the Department of Chil-dren and Family Services. In late November I dropped off 27 quilts to the Sheriff’s Department front desk. I received a message from my contact there as well as a call from the gal in the Children’s Unit letting me know how much they appreciated the quilts and how beautiful they were. Please continue to make them and I will con-tinue to take care of them. I did not receive any quilts at the December meeting so please bring them to the January meeting if you have any ready. For our new members, the quilts should be 36” x 36” and made with all cotton or natural fiber batting. No synthetic battings, please. The quilt will not necessarily be used as a coverlet but more of a “comfort” blanket for a child in need. Please use bright cheerful kid colors and fabrics. I would like everyone to sign their first name and Friendship Knot Quilters on the back. Please wash the quilts if you have not prewashed your fabrics. We want them soft and cuddly. Please do not pin your name on the quilt. Thank you all for your contribution to this charity initi-ative. I will be collecting them at every meeting.

Pet Bed Work Group Jane Sanks

During our December workshop, we finished enough beds to supply Donte’s Den with the 75 beds needed to equip their facility for opening day which is scheduled for this spring. In total for 2014, 449 pet beds were complet-ed. My goal was one per day or 365. Needless to say, I am thrilled to have met and exceeded this goal. It could not have been done without the fabric, bags of quilting scraps and woman power I have had. Thank you for everything you have done to assist in making this project suc-cessful. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, January 23rd from 1-3 PM at the American Red Cross. I will bring upholstery fabric, lining fab-ric and stuffing materials. If you plan to come, please bring scissors. It is the one shortage at the facility. We have three working sewing ma-chines and plenty of work space. You may join us every month or just whenev-er you feel like coming. Your help will always be appreciated. The ARC is located on Cantu Court which is near the intersection of Cattleman and Bee Ridge Roads. If you are unfamiliar with the area, you may call me and I will help you with directions. IMPORTANT REMINDER - Quilt Registration Forms Due by January 19th Quilt registrations must be submitted/postmarked by January 19, 2015. You do not have to have your quilt finished by Jan 19, but you do need to get your forms sub-mitted, and your FKQG membership renewed. You can find all information regarding registering your quilts for the show, as well as the required registrations forms on our guild website: www.friendshipknotquiltersguild.com. Complete a regis-tration form for each quilt you want to enter. Submit two photos of your quilt, as well as two copies of your registra-tion forms. Print your name, the quilt’s name and category number on the back of each photo. A limited number of copies of the registration information and forms will be available at guild meetings. All quilts must be dropped off on February 21, 2015, between 10 am and 1 pm. No quilts will be accepted before or after this time. Drop off location: Kay Consigny’s, 4745 Sweetmeadow Cir, Sarasota FL 34238 in Palmer Ranch. Consider car-pooling or sending several quilts with one person, it will speed up drop off considerably. Many people will be in line at 10 am, so it would be helpful to space out your arri-vals a little. As long as you are in line at 1 pm, your quilt will be accepted, none after that. Help Us Get the Word Out

We hope all FKQG members will email their friends an e-vite to the quilt show. That way, email addresses can be kept just between friends. Linda Pearce will send the e-vite with show information, including pictures and instruc-tions on how to send the e-vite at the end of January. Pick Up Your Donor Quilt Tickets and Husqvarna Q100 Tickets

Donor Quilt and Sewing Machine tickets are $1.00 per ticket. An envelope with 15 raffle tickets for our Donor Quilt and also 10 raffle tickets for the donated Husqvarna Q100 is available for all members to pick up at our regular meetings. After you sell all of your tickets, just return the money and ticket stubs at a guild meeting to Dawna Basl.

Challenge Quilts – Preview January 19th Meeting

Preview the wonderful challenge quilts at our January 19th meeting. Voting will be held at our February 16th meeting. Remember, there will be cash awards given for first place $50, second place $20 and third place $10. Fabulous Quilt Auction

Pam Morris has generously donated a quilt to be auctioned at our show. This stunning quilt was made by, internation-ally known and award-winning quilt artist, Carol Taylor. Be prepared to bid on this wonderful quilt. Block Auction

The Quilt block Auction is a great way for the guild to raise money. Pat Sefton still needs more quilt blocks, not quilts. Include enough for a normal quilt layout, include leftover fabric if available, a copy of the pattern and layout instructions if you have them. Antique blocks would be great if in good condition. Don’t wait until the last minute; the Quilt Show will be here before we know it. Door Prizes

Sue Balazs is asking for donations to be used as Quilt Show door prizes. She can use any new or like-new sew-ing notions, un-used patterns, good quality fat-quarters, anything quilting related that is in perfect condition, like mugs or plaques with cute sayings, fun aprons. She would like you to give things that you, yourself, would actually enjoy receiving as a door prize. Consignments – Entry Forms Due by February 6th

The Consignment Booth at our Quilt Show gives members a chance to sell their creations at the quilt show, for just a small fee. We have traditional quilts, art quilts, jackets, bags and home décor items. Our members have also had great success in the past, selling their judged quilts. Consignment rules and entry form are attached to this newsletter. For additional information about the Consign-ment Booth, please contact Janet Wick. Magazines and Books

Please collect your magazines in bundles of 5, tied with string or a strip of fabric. Also, look through your books – hard or soft cover for sale in our booth. Magazines and books are great way to make money for our quilt guild. Tote Bags

We still need more tote bags. Use any cute, preprinted fabric from your stash. Instructions were distributed at our meeting, ask around, surely one of your friends has a copy. Or, just let us know if you need an instruction sheet, we can email you one. Quilt Appraisals

Brenda Grampsas will be joining us again this quilt show, to perform quilt appraisals. You may have a written ap-praisal for $40, or a verbal evaluation for $10.

Block Auction

Pat Sefton

We are still in need of donations for the block auction booth at the quilt show. Do you have blocks that need to be sewn together but have lost interest in the design or fabric? Are these blocks taking up space in your sewing room? Do you have a few antique blocks and don’t know what to do with them? Consider donating them to the block auction. I currently have approximately 21 donations and would love to have 30+ donations. Participants may bid on the package of blocks and the highest bid will win the package of blocks. I will have a sign-up sheet at the January meeting and if you are interested in working at the booth for a two-hour timeslot, I would appre-ciate your help. My thanks to those who have donated blocks

thus far. If you have questions, please feel free to

contact me at 358-1771.

Mini-Quilt Silent Auction Cass Bowen

For our new members, we are asking our members to make a small quilt for the Mini-Quilt Silent Auction at the quilt show in March. Each month I report on the number of quilts turned in.

We are almost three quarters of the way to our goal of 100 quilts for the mini-quilt auction for the show. Can you make 29 more – yes you can and more if you wish. It never hurts to have a few extra! I did not receive any quilts in Decem-ber at the holiday party so I am sure I will re-ceive many in January. For our new members, the quilts can be pieced, appliquéd or painted and stitched. We are not only accepting mini-quilts made of fabric but also quilts that are hard-mounted on a piece of rigid backing material. Make sure if this is to be used as a wall piece that the buyer has some way to hang it. Not all the buyers will be quilt-ers so a sleeve with a dowel would be nice. Eve-ryone likes to know who made the quilt so please sign your quilts but if you don’t want to sign them, at least pin your name on it. I’m keeping a list so it’s important. Remember maximum total perimeter should not exceed 80 inches. They can be square, rectangular or round. There is no minimum perimeter measurement. Please turn them in to me at any of the future meetings and call me with any questions you might have.

Gift Basket Boutique

Mary Nissen and Karla Lynch

As of January 5th we have 29 baskets turned in with 5 more to go. We feel it’s very important to have over 30 baskets. The cost will be $5 for 30 tickets. If someone wants a ticket for every basket they’ll have to spend $10. The baskets turned in so far are GREAT! A number of pictures of them will be on the web site very soon. Thanks to all the members who have contributed or made a basket on their own!

Challenge Quilt Update

Pam Morris

The challenge quilts will be displayed at the January and February meetings. The last day to enter is the February meeting, 2/16. They will be voted on at the February meeting by the membership for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. All challenge quilts must have 2 quilt show forms and 2 pictures of the quilt (this require-ment is for insurance purposes. The challenge committee will then hold the quilts for the show. A fee for the challenge quilts is not required.

KiDZQuilts

Jo Wieczynski, Coordinator In 2014 KiDZQuilts donated 836 beautiful baby quilts to the Neonatal In-tensive Care Unit of Sarasota Memorial Hospital. We are very grateful to over 50 members of the Guild who supported Ki-DZQuilts by donating completed quilts, fabric, batting and sewing supplies. This month Bunny Schermer as well as the SEW WHATS Cottage Group contributed large rolls of batting. We were very fortunate to receive large collections of high quality fabrics from several families, whose members no longer can sew. Our monthly meetings are at the Fruitville Library from 12:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Show & Tell is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. This past year Guild members Diane Kestner, Donna Koenig and Linda Forrester gave mini classes, especially useful for our new quilters. The January meeting is Tuesday, January 13th. The February meeting is Tuesday, February 10th. Please join us! For more information contact Jo Wieczynski at [email protected].

RETREAT NEWS The “No Frills” winter retreat is peeking around the corner. Four days to relax and sew after the business of the Quilt Show. Mark your calendar for March 19,20,21, 22. See this newsletter for the reg-istration form.
