Welcome to My Hometowns TexasCultural & Entertainment Magazine

As we say goodbye to 2014 and hello to 2015, many of us are making plans for the upcoming year. Some are making resolutions to change their lives for the better in some way; lose weight, get more exercise, stop smoking, make more money, etc., etc., etc. A few of us are vowing to do more traveling. I am one of those bitten with the travel bug. I can almost hear people sighing in disgust at this revelation. Of course, most people would love to travel but…time, money, commitments…all of

this and more makes taking off for parts unknown difficult if not impossible for most people. All of these things apply to me as well, but that doesn’t diminish my desire for the open road.

One thing I’ve learned throughout my lifetime is that life is a journey and that we are all travelers, whether we like it or not, and that my definition of traveling might not be the same as it is to others. For instance, I recently came upon an older gentleman walking his dog in one of our local parks. We exchanged greetings and he proceeded to tell me about a wonderful new adventure he was planning. It consisted

of being a sort of “security” guard at a remote gas well site. He would receive housing and a small salary and all he needed to do was to stay on the property twenty four hours a day, seven days a week to make sure there were no problems with the daily operation of the site. I expressed my dismay that he would be unable to leave for any length of time. “No vacations…or trips of any sort?” I asked, appalled at the thought. His reply was, “I can see anything I want to and go anywhere in the world…I have a TV!”

With that in mind, I challenge us all to travel this year - whether it’s around the world on trains, planes, boats

and cars or simply through books, our imaginations…or our TVs. As St. Augustine once said,“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page. This year I plan on reading a book!

Bon Voyage,

Hollywood this month: Heroes, scandals, and … North Korea???

We hardly had time to wave goodbye to 2014 and welcome in the New Year before we were pushed to the limits of news in Hollywood!

The holiday bustle certainly did not slow down Tinsel town this year, as almost every day a new headline took the news by storm. Celebrity split-ups, scathing memoirs (thank you Brooke Shields), a Kardashian gives birth, a major Hollywood film is shelved due to terroristic threats, and then brought back again, and of course … the wonderful vocal meltdown of Mariah Carey. Oh, it’s all just too much. Or is it?! Let’s get straight to the skinny!

Kourtney Kardashian had a baby boy, bringing the number to three with boyfriend Scott Diseck. Brooke Shields put out a new memoir showcasing her crazy childhood in the biz with an overbearing alcoholic mother. She even goes on to point out former lovers and describes some very private moments with the fellas. All of this is no-news compared to the behind-the-scenes frantic meltdown of Mariah Carey and her now “epic” vocal catastrophe at the lighting of the tree at Rockefeller Center. Whew! That’s a lot! Quite a bit of controversy was stirred up regarding her performance at the event, which has quickly gone viral, without the back-up music in place… just her voice. In case you missed it, good for you! It’s quite screechy with full pauses in her voice, and what is there, is way off key. Okay, okay everyone has an off day this is true. Unfortunately, she was way past that day.

Alright, alright, alright as McConaughey would

say. Now to film! So many great films to look forward to in January and in 2015 as a whole! American Sniper is a film already regarded as a fan favorite, telling the story of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, America’s most deadly sniper. Drowning in duty, the storyline follows Kyle through his patriotic, yet harsh tours of duty to his own sad demise on American soil. The movie stars Bradley Cooper as Kyle, and is directed by Clint Eastwood.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Unbroken, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, Big Eyes, Night at the Museum: Secret Tomb, and Wild are also huge draws in theatres right now.

We cannot, however, leave one little trouble-making film

off this month’s list. Originally set to open Christmas Day, The Interview has set off alarms everywhere when North Korea deemed the film as an act of terrorism and promised retaliation for its release. Now one might not consider North Korea a real threat, but it seems as if they made good on their threat. Sony studios were hacked, bringing the studio to pull the film and shelf it for a later date (if at all). However, a back-fire from Hollywood celebrities, other studios, and the gosh-darn good patriotic American public made certain that the film was released after all, allowing James Franco and Seth Rogan to have the best publicity ever known to man!

“Being in the outdoors and observing nature is something I love to do,”

says artist Carroll Richardson. He captures the many moods of nature in his beautiful watercolor and oil paintings as well as his artful pencil sketches. A resident of Benbrook, Carroll began drawing and painting as a young child. It was in 2004, when he was taking classes with local artist Dan Brown, that he really began getting serious about pursuing his passion. Richardson retired from his job in computer aided drafting in 2008, a career that he credits with helping hone his drawing skills, and began taking classes from Fort Worth instructor Martha Spurlock and attending workshops put on

by Doug Prine, Thomas Owen, Gerald Brommer and other talented artists in the area. These classes and workshops rewarded Carroll with valuable information and allowed him to grow as an artist. A visit to the annual Parker County Peach Festival lured Carroll to the Weatherford Art Association to learn more about painting a little over twelve years ago.

ArtSince then, he has garnered numerous ribbons and awards from the Association as well as from other art shows in the area. He is a member of the Weatherford Art Association, The Society of Watercolor Artists, Inc., Fort Worth, Northwest Art Association, and Johnson County Art Group. Carroll’s beautiful and detailed pencil sketches and watercolors of landscape and wildlife transport the viewer to a lovely thicket in the woods, a lonely jetty off the coast or to a single leaf supporting a small tree frog preparing to leap back into the bog. From the gnarled roots of an old tree to buffalo roaming the plains, Carroll Richardson expertly captures nature in its many moods and variations and shares his beautiful vision with us – the lucky observers. To see Carroll’s work and a list of upcoming shows visit his website at: www.carrollrichardson.com.

was the go to place in Aledo for great coffee and icy drinks for over a decade. The space was also occupied by a gift shop owned by Judy Wallace and featuring a variety of fabulous gifts, cards and decorative items. When Clifton decided to sell the shop, Wallace chose to purchase it and quickly changed the name to Holy Grounds Coffee and Gifts.

Located in the same space and Street in Aledo, Holy Grounds serves up some of the same wonderful coffees, such as Cowboy Blend and Cream Royale, but they have also brought back many old favorites, like tropical tea and fruit chillers. Judy has

Located just a few mere miles to the southwest,

Stephenville has found itself growing like wildfire in recent years with the expansion and growth of Tarleton State University, a renewed booming agriculture and oil business.

Like many college towns, Stephenville, (known popularly to locals as “The ‘Ville”) swells in population during the school year and is breaking new highs with each passing one. Because of such swells, Stephenville businesses are enjoying the newfound surplus in residents, but probably none more than the businesses that cater to the nightlife.

City Limits is the premier Live music venue and nightclub in Texas, located in Stephenville next to The Agave Bar and Grill on business 377. This is a huge venue, located on several acres to accommodate both large and small music acts alike. Basically connected to The Agave Bar and Grill, City Limits is a must-do for night dwellers in Stephenville. Everyone from George Jones to the latest and greatest in country music has played there, and there’s a calendar full every month out of the year to provide such entertainment to the fans. “The Voice” contestant and finalist, Luke Wade will be there in February. There’s also daily/weekly drinks specials and you’d be hard pressed to find a small crowd any given weekend.

Country music not your thing?

Try out Bostocks Billiards and Bar. Located just across from Tarleton’s main campus on Washington, Bostocks has been a long standing tradition for students and locals alike. Featuring live Texas music, Bostocks also lends a hand to the fan-favorite karaoke Stephenville following. A very real, and very huge crowd for folks of all ages in

The ‘Ville. Bostocks is the kind of place where you can play pool, shuffleboard, enjoy or participate in the music, or just relax with friends at the bar. Always a houseful on weekends, and certain weeknights as well due to its proximity to the university. Food and drink specials are always on hand, and DO NOT leave without trying the chicken nachos! Yum yum yum.

Located right on the square in downtown Stephenville, is Rockin’ P Bar and Grill offering a unique and friendly atmosphere to the nightlife in town. Family owned and operated since 1998, Rockin’ P’s offers the best in live country and western music.

You can enjoy the longest happy hour daily from 3-7 pm, and is the best spot in town to people watch.

Now, we all know that in every town, locals keep a certain gem hidden away just for themselves, unwilling to tell the whole world of their favorite watering hole. Well consider Stephenville’s little best-kept secret no longer a secret! PT’s Prime Time Nightclub, located at 1400 West Sean (nestled right in to an apartment complex) has been a favorite spot for years and is growing every week! Originally a 1970’s décor-themed country club, PT’s has emersed as Stephenville’s hottest new venue! People of all ages, backgrounds, and tastes merge together every night of the week to enjoy the newly-renovated spaces, a variety of drinks and specials, and their famous karaoke! PT’S is a don’t-ya-dare-miss after the sun goes down!

As Fish Creek Restaurant owner Joe

Lane says, “Eating seafood is not just for vacations to the beach!” A true statement indeed; especially when you can feast on the award winning cuisine offered at this excellent Willow Park establishment. Cajun and Southwestern Seafood fusion, along with traditional seafood favorites top the menu at Fish Creek. Blackened Tilapia, Mr. York’s Crab Cakes and Skewered Shrimp, Joe’s Spicy Crawfish, Amy’s Blackened Fish Tacos and The Hayes’ Brochette are just a few of the delicious seafood offerings. Also, for land lovers, Fish Creek offers a scrumptious half pound burger as well as a perfect grilled chicken sandwich. Even the sides at this eatery win high

praise. A recent diner from Houston remarked, “I was in the Weatherford area for a week and ate there twice! Both times I ordered the blackened tilapia with asparagus and cheese grits. I’m in love with Fish Creek’s cheese grits!” Delicious food, friendly and efficient service and good value make Fish Creek a popular dining spot for their regular customers. “Happy hour appetizers and drink specials are an extra good bargain,” said a frequent customer. Taco Tuesdays are also popular with the local crowd. For just $10 you can get a blackened tilapia taco served with slaw, chipotle mayo and pico de gallo, a chipotle steak and shrimp taco, served with zesty chipotle sauce, shredded lettuce and pico, and a Baja shrimp taco

with srirach aioli and roasted corn salsa all with your choice of two sides. Saturday night all wines by the bottle are half price and if you bring in your Church Bulletin on Sunday you will receive a 10% discount on your meal. They also feature monthly wine dinners.

Fish Creek also offers a private dining room that will seat up to thirty-five adults comfortably. The room, with its rustic décor, provides a picturesque setting for corporate events, engagement dinners and private parties.

They also offer a private patio which can accommodate up to 75 people located in a wooded area attached to the restaurant. This area can be used for wedding receptions as well as a variety of other special events. Joe Lane’s Fish Creek Restaurant & Bar has won high praise from folks passing through as well as the local community. “Five out of five stars, no question, said one happy patron, we hope that this establishment stays here forever. We’ve found a GREAT restaurant in Willow Park.” Take that Galveston!
