A Star Like No Other On the Epiphany of the Lord, we recall the magi who saw a star at its rising and set off in search of the newborn King. In Biblical times, people believed that a new star appeared at the birth of any future ruler, and astrologers kept an eye out. Scientists over the years have theorized about how the star appeared and then reappeared later. Maybe Venus and Jupiter coming close together at a certain point in their orbits looked like a phenomenal star, for instance. With faith, we don’t need to know. What’s important is that the magi set off in the right direction and kept going, even when they temporarily lost sight of the star. Sky-gazing can captivate us, as it did the magi. If you ever got a telescope for Christmas, you could get a close-up view. Even with the naked eye, though, we can see a shooting star, a lunar eclipse, or Mars and planets beyond, if we know where to look. Here (drumroll, please), we need an “epiphany”—the kind of moment when we say, “Ah, ha! I get it!” We have to know where to look! In one of the Sunday Gospel readings this month, Jesus catches sight of two people following Him. e Lord asks, “What are you looking for?” We join together for holy Mass each week because, like those two disciples who wanted to know where Jesus was staying, we seek to spend time in the house of the Lord with Him. During this new year, may you be blessed with the wisdom of the magi, who taught us to gaze heavenward for guidance, and the desire to seek Him in faith here at ground level. at its rising and set off in search of the newborn King.

The Lord asks, “What are you looking for?” We join together for holy Mass each week because, like those two disciples who wanted to know where Jesus was staying, we seek to spend time in the house of the Lord with Him.

During this new year, may you be blessed with the wisdom of the magi, who taught us to gaze heavenward for guidance, and the desire to seek Him in faith here at ground level.

Prayer of Thanksgiving

On this day, may I put asideCares that weigh on heart or mind,Allowing room for happinessAnd gratitude, for I am blessed.

In traditions handed down,May insightfulness be found,Recalling the desire for peaceShared together with thanks at harvest feast.

Lord, for the gifts of grace receivedAnd welcome as I come in need,May I be ever more awareAnd thankful in my heart and prayer.

Amen.

An Advent Prayer

Lord Jesus,

In this Advent season,May I wait with hope renewed. As once You came into the world, Help me draw nearer to You.

Candles on an Advent wreathRemind me that You are Light. Please give me faith that all I need Is already in Your sight.

Advent is a time of waitingBut of preparation, too.Thank You, Loving Savior, for this momentWhich I give with love to You.

Amen. Christmas

PrayerLord Jesus,

With no room at the inn,Upon straw You lay;May all the wonder of ChristmasBe in my heart today.

As shepherds keeping watchOn a most holy night,Please keep me always in Your care,In Your most holy Light.

Announced with glad tidingsAnd a new star above,You are my hope as I rejoiceIn Your eternal love.

Amen.

e scene brought to my mind a certain pioneer inventor in electricity, a man named Nikola Tesla. He found a way to harness the power of water at Niagara Falls. He also put on some amazing electrical shows, o en just for friends visiting his lab.

In one of his favorite feats, an apparent reball formed at the snap of the inventor’s ngers. He held it, let it fall onto someone’s lap, and put it in a box—all harmlessly. To this day, no one knows how he did it.

Amazingly, too, the re of the Holy Spirit comes into our souls in Baptism and frees us from original sin. Tesla

showed people the power of electricity. Like all sacraments, Baptism gives us visible signs of God’s powerful grace.

Anointing with oil just before Baptism o ers a sign of our sharing in the mission of Jesus, the One anointed as Priest, Prophet and King.

e water poured at Baptism helps us to envision the wellspring of

grace we receive and our cleansing from original sin.

Jesus’ friends who witnessed the Trans guration saw Him robed in dazzling white. Wearing a white garment at Baptism clothes us inthe hope of eternal life with our Lord and Savior.

Flame from the Easter candle used to light a small taper at Baptism reminds us of Jesus, our Light.

When Christmas lights are packed away and we begin “Ordinary Time” in the liturgical year, spark up! God works in amazing ways in us, His children, when we let our faith shine.

With the motto, “We are doing great things,” the city of Gary, Indiana, has become a new home to Bishop Donald J. Hying. TV Mass viewers have known Bishop Hying as a celebrant of the TV Mass, beginning on the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord in January 2011.

Back then, he was Fr. Donald Hying. As rector of Saint Francis de Sales Seminary, he welcomed Heart of the Nation to make the seminary’s chapel home for the TV Mass.

Heart of the Nation’s TV Mass certainly has its faithful (and faith- lled!) fans, but the ministry never included a fan club. At a send-o party for Fr. Don from his rst parish, though, bidding for a shoelace from his old athletic shoes started at $75. (How’s that for a loyal fan?) On another occasion, during his time as seminary rector, the seminarians came to a gathering all clad in “Fr. Hying Fan Club” t-shirts they had made.

TV Mass celebrants have the opportunity to evangelize—to lead others to live in faith and Gospel values. “We have been blessed by Bishop Hying’s involvement with the TV Mass, and the people of his new diocese will surely be blessed, too,” said Bruno John, executive director.

Prayer & Worship GuideJanuary 4 – February 28, 2015

An Invitation from Heart of the Nation

Heart of the Nation invites you to join in “My Sunday

Mass” on TV or online, experiencing the blessings of prayer

and worship in the Catholic faith. The TV Mass began in

1984 and has continued to bring spiritual comfort and hope

to the faithful and those discovering or rediscovering the

Catholic faith.Gifts to Heart of the Nation touch the hearts of Catholics

unable to get to church because of the frailties of age, illness

or injury, lack of transportation, or other struggles. Heart

of the Nation depends on gifts from TV Mass viewers and

other friends as we continue the work which our Lord began

by traveling from place to place, teaching the crowds, and

entering into hearts and homes. Your Prayer & Worship Guide lets you follow along during

Mass. Reflections on the daily Scripture readings and seasonal

prayers in each issue offer inspiration as you seek to draw

closer to the Lord while rejoicing in His love. For TV Mass

information and more ways to share and grow in your Catholic

faith, please visit www.HeartoftheNation.org.
