REFLECTIONS FROM THE PASTOR “Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.”

(Isaiah 60:1-2)

If outside Christmas light displays are not yet turned off, they will be soon. If indoor

Christmas trees, along with their lights, haven’t been packed away, they will be soon. Offi-

cially, the Season of Light, otherwise known as the Season of Epiphany, continues until the

Sunday before Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent). But for many of us the season comes

to an end when the Christmas lights go off and we are confronted with the dark, dreary and

cold month of January. But the gospel of John reminds us that “the light shines in the dark-

ness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:5). This light that came into the world

when Christ was born is not dependent on any particular season of the year.

That is because the revelation of God’s Word in the person of Jesus has brought a light

that can pierce the deepest of all darkness. It’s a light that can penetrate the darkness of hate

with love, the darkness of anger with grace, the darkness of revenge with forgiveness, the

darkness of hopelessness with hope… No matter how dark the world appears, no matter how

desperate our need, our hope is found in Christ. Where in your life do you need to hear God’s

words of light and promise? What dark places in the world need the witness of God’s light?

How are you called to be a bearer of this light to others? Our homes, our society, our world

so desperately needs light. We need it during the months of January and February when eve-

rything often appears so dark and gloomy. We need it all year long when the darkness that

has nothing to do with the earth’s rotation and the length of daylight attempts to overwhelm us

with despair.

As we pack away the lights and leave behind another Christmas season may Christ’s

presence in your heart continue to create a visible glow. I encourage you to go ahead and

shine in 2015! Shine bright and beautiful, so that all can see the hope that has transformed

your personal life, and the light that can transform even the darkest corners of our world.

May 2015 be a glowing year in your home and all around town!

Andrew is Deborah Sorace’s son. CONDOLENCES •Margaret Batchelor passed away December 11. A memorial service was held December 20. •Jane Harris, mother of Susan White, passed away. •Family of Colton Wise, 4th grader at Menlo Park Academy. He passed away from asthma complications. •Eileen Simpson and family on the passing of George on November 27. •The family and friends of Tony Nero, 30 years old, who died in an auto accident the Friday after Thanksgiving. He was a very close friend of Emma Jarman and was much loved by the Jarman-DuBois-Wakefield family. •The family of Carol Chappelle, Melissa Vlasak’s neighbor, passed away November 4. She was 85 years old. •The family and friends of Jordan Daus, Kenston graduate who passed away. •Harry Guinther and family on the passing of his wife Ginny, a dear friend of Pris Hoag. She died November 23. NEW PRAYER CONCERNS •Mannie Elliott, student of Jackie Welch, is nearing the end of his struggle with a brain tumor. Please pray for his Mom and brother. •Jon Groth, friend of Glenn and Marilyn Wyville, has finally come off ICU after being there over two months. He has severe pan-creatitis but is doing better and is now able to eat some, walk a little and is talking. •Karen Hunter has been diagnosed with breast cancer. •Cassie Locher, granddaughter of Don and Jennifer Long, is in the hospital with an infection. •Erma Solkiewicz is under hospice care at her home. •Maxine Hughes has been moved to Warrensville Regency Hospital for additional rehab following her stroke. •Ron and Linda Kooser moved from their long term home on December 22. •David Clayton is recovering from ACL surgery on December 19. •Margaret Stratton is under hospice care at her home. •Judy Reimenschneider, friend of the Wyvilles, is having breast cancer surgery after the first of the year. •Abbey and Noah Jaffee, Greer and Pam Wurster’s grandchildren, have mono. •Charissa Sallach is recovering from gall bladder surgery on December 15. •Amanda, Sherri Sturges’ daughter, has health concerns and must make decisions concerning her job. •Mike, Charissa Sallach’s brother, is battling multiple myeloma cancer. His treatment has stopped working and they are looking to begin an experimental program. There are questions if his insurance will cover the treatment.

•Ellen Hollmeyer is recovering from leg surgery at The Weils. •Sydney Jones, daughter of Laura & Chris Jones, is home recovering from a burst appendix. •Marge Rehark, Jim Miller’s aunt, has been diagnosed with cancer (3-6 months to live). •Deanna Tenney, friend of Kris Welch, has stage four brain cancer. •Mary Kushner, Melissa Vlasak’s aunt, has been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. She will have her first surgery soon. •Steven Boyer, family friend of Norma Shupp, suffered a heart attack. He was doing well but was lifeflighted with complications. •Sally Moser is home following her surgery.

Beth Ryan, who not only coordinated the church decorating effort at the beginning of the season, but

PMO REGISTRATION FOR FALL ‘15 IS UNDERWAY! The Parents’ Morning Out (PMO) program is now accepting registration information from cur-

rent and former participants as well as from the general public for the 2015/2016 classes. Pre-

registration for church members began in December and continues.

PMO is a "children’s time together" with other young children in a Christian atmosphere. Hours

are 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Age-appropriate activities are guided and super-

vised by kind, nurturing, responsible teachers. An extension of our church school programming, PMO

daily lesson plans include Bible stories, related songs, crafts and art projects, large motor activities,

snacks, music, free-play and social skills development activities. Children bring their lunches and eat

together before going home.

Children must be at least 12 months but not 36 months of age by September 30, 2015 to partici-

pate. Twenty-one to 36 month olds may attend one of four weekday programs offered on Mondays,

Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in Room 101; 12 to 20 month olds may participate on Tuesdays

or Wednesdays in the Nursery.

PRESCHOOL/PMO CLOSED The Parents’ Morning Out Program and The Methodist Preschool will be closed on Monday, January 19 in

observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The church office will be open.

2014 OUTREACH IN REVIEW Thank you for the generous donations of time, talents and resources in 2014! Donations to the

Hunger Barrel helped fill the shelves of the Chagrin Falls Park Food Pantry, the Bainbridge Area Food

for Friends Pantry, and the Aurora Co-Op Food Pantry all year. We grew our support of other hunger

ministries through monthly volunteer opportunities at the Broadway Mobile Food Pantry and the Cleve-

land Food Bank. We continued support of the Help Me Learn school supply collection and distribution

program in August which benefited several hundred area students. Our church is continuing to build a

relationship with the Nehemiah Mission to support their programs and send work teams out on projects.

Your donations in behalf of the December Sponsor a Family, Mitten Tree, and Reach Out and Read pro-

jects touched hundreds. The Christmas offering was split between Geauga County Jobs and Family Ser-

vices and the UMCOR Global Health advance for Ebola response.

2015 MONTHLY ON-GOING OPPORTUNITIES First Sunday Food Drive: Fill the barrel in the narthex with your non-perishable food donations. Food

3rd Tuesday Cleveland Food Bank: Sort donated foods from 6-8 p.m. Signing-up or calling office to sign

up is appreciated. You can also register on-line. (Leslie McKnight)

3rd Friday Broadway Mobile Food Pantry: Distribute donated food from the Cleveland Food Bank to the

residents of the Slavic Village Area. This is a joint mission of UMCCF and Bay United Methodist

HUNGRY? The Cleveland Food Bank provides nutritious food and support to 700+ member agencies and

programs that serve the hungry in six Northeast Ohio counties – Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake,

Ashland, and Richland. The mission is to ensure everyone in Northeast Ohio has the nutritious food they

need each day. It is the largest relief organization in Northeast Ohio.

December volunteers from our church packed 324 two-pound bags of Special K low fat granola

bulk cereal to fill 81 eight-pound boxes for distribution. Volunteers scooped the cereal from a large bin

and placed it into plastic bags which were then weighed, tied, counted and boxed. Total pounds of cere-

al? 648! Who knows what January will hold. Our next volunteer opportunity is January 20. Sign up;

it’s amazing what we can do in two hours or less to fight hunger!

MAGNETIC NAME TAGS

We are in the process of updating the name tags to a magnetic type. We have been informed that

people with pacemakers are advised not to use magnetic name tags. Please contact the church office at

FEBRUARY BELL TOWER DEADLINE The deadline for all articles to be included in the February Bell Tower is Friday, January 16. You

can drop off articles to the church office or submit them electronically to

info@chagrinfallsumc.org.

CHILDREN’S MUSICAL AUDITIONS

The King’s Singers will present their spring musical at the 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sun-

day, May 10, 2015. A reception will follow the service. Auditions will be held on Thursday, January 8,

from 4:00-5:30 p.m. All children currently in grades 1 through 8 are invited to join us. They do not

have to be in the King’s Singers currently, but they must be willing to attend the weekly rehearsals on

Thursday afternoons, starting in January. This is one way the children can have fun, work hard and pre-

sent a gift of service to our congregation.

RINGING BELLS NEEDED Ringing Bells is in need of new ringers! One new member is essential, and two to three would

be great! See Karen Spisak (the director) to express your interest and ask your questions. Rehearsals

are on Tuesdays mornings at 10 a.m. in Harris Fellowship Hall.

BAPTISM RENEWAL SERVICE A Baptismal Renewal Service will be held during both 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Worship on

Sunday, January 8. As we read about Jesus’ baptism that day, all church members will have the oppor-

tunity to renew their baptismal vows. Towards the end of the service, you will be invited to come for-

ward. If you choose to do so, you will place your fingers in the baptismal bowl and then to your fore-

head as a sign of remembering your baptism. If you so desire, you may then kneel at the altar rail before

returning to your seat. This renewing of our commitment to Christ and the ministry of Christ’s Church

on Baptism of the Lord Sunday is a great way to begin a new year. To participate in the baptismal re-

newal part of the service, you do not need to be a member of the UMC of CF, however you do need to

be baptized. If you have not been baptized and want to consider that option for your life, please contact

Rev. Joyce.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN (UMW) NEWS

Thanks to all who bought our delicious toffee! We sold out in record time. Perhaps next year we

should make more!

The next Board meeting will be January 8 at 10:00 a.m. in the church library. All officers and

circle leaders are asked to attend. If your circle leader is unable to attend, please have someone there to

represent your circle.

Circle Notes:

Ida Goode will meet on Thursday, January 22 at noon in Harris Fellowship Hall. Kris DuBois

will present a program on the Paraguay School and West Side Community House. Ella Shepard and

Kris DuBois are hostesses.

Lydia Circle will meet on Tuesday, January 27 in the Fireside Room at 9:15 a.m. Shirley Ashby

will give a program entitled “Water, Water Everywhere.” Eileen Simpson will be hostess and Pat

Hosmer will give devotions.

Rachel Circle will meet on January 24 at 9:30 a.m. in Harris Fellowship Hall to do a Valentine

craft project for a local nursing home.

Historic Note: Stouffers used our church kitchen as a test kitchen in 1978! There are some of us who

remember that!

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

Our college students are, or soon will be, back on campus after their Christmas break. No doubt

they are already thinking about receiving a box of Valentine cookies from our church members. The

UMW greatly appreciates donations of homemade cookies, individually wrapped in plastic or waxed

paper, as well as bags of wrapped candies, or cash which will offset the cost of postage. There is a sign-

up sheet on the bulletin board so that the committee will know what will be contributed.

Monday, February 2 is the day boxes are packed, so donations of cookies and candy will need to

be brought to the church kitchen by Sunday, February 1. Any cookies brought on Monday will need to

be at the church by 9 a.m. when cookie packing begins.

Please double check your college student’s address and notify the church if there have been any

changes or additions since last year. We know our students will enjoy and appreciate a “package from

home.”

“SOUPER” BOWL SUNDAE

It’s that time of year again. “Souper” Bowl Sundae! Our Fellowship Committee is hosting yet

another tempting menu of homemade soups lovingly prepared by our members. We will have crackers

and cornbread to accompany your soup.

The best part, and you must save room, is the dessert. Lip smacking hot fudge sundaes!. What

could be better?

$5.00 per person; $10.00 per family

All proceeds raised will be donated to projects determined by our Outreach Committee.

Club 45 Lock-in—January 10-11 All 4th-5th Graders are invited to join Bob for an evening of fun, movies, and hide-n-seek. Bring a drink

and snack to share. We will meet at the church at 8 p.m. and stay the night through JAM Sessions the

next morning.

Middle and High School Epiphany Dinner at Bob’s January 4 5:30-9 p.m.

Come to Bob’s house for an elegant dinner with appetizers and desserts. Come and see all of Bob’s trees

and decorations. We will have linen napkins and some amazing food if I do say so myself. It will be so

good that even Brian Blake might like it. I hope you will do your best to attend. I will need people to

sign up so I can plan the menu the deadline to sign up is Sunday, December 28 and the cost is $15

per person. NO EXCEPTIONS. It is already a busy month. Bob needs to plan. To sign up, see Bob.

We will meet at the church and caravan to my home and back. Plan rides accordingly.

Youth Sunday Praise Team Practice Continues January 11, 12-4 p.m. and January 25, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

These will be our final two practices. Please do your best to attend.

Confirmation Opening Retreat January 10 from 12 to 4 p.m.

All 6th-8th graders and their parents who want to participate in Confirmation are encouraged to attend.

YOUTH SUNDAY February 8 Both Services

We will be practicing during JAM Sessions on Jan 4, 11, 25, and Feb. 1.

We will need people for dramas, ushers, and speaking parts.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO DO THEIR BEST TO BE THERE. HIGH SCHOOL WILL MEET IN

YOUTH LOUNGE DURING THIS TIME. MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL HAVE A REGULAR CLASS.

All Youth 6:30-8 January 25

All Youth 5-7 February 1 –MANDATORY

The theme this year is Love and there are lots of parts and people needed. We need to do our part to pro-

vide a meaningful worship experience. In order to receive a part you must attend JAM Sessions by Jan-

uary 11. No parts will be given after that. Please try to be at all practices. Questions, see Bob

Youth Mission Trip Information Meeting February 8 at 9:45 a.m. in Harris Fellowship Hall

Please note that due to circumstances beyond my control we had to move the mission trip one week lat-

er. The new dates are June 28-July 4. Come to this meeting to receive all the important information

about this amazing mission experience. If you cannot attend and are interested, see Bob for more infor-

mation. The deadline for the first deposit will be March 15.
