THE RECTORYJANUARY 2015

New Year’s Day has not always been the 1st of January in England. While most countries in WesternEurope recognized 1st January as New Year's Day even before they adopted the Gregorian Calendar in1582, in England New Year’s Day was always the 25th March, this being the Feast of the Annunciationotherwise known as Lady Day, named thus after the Virgin Mary. The 25th March (being nine monthsbefore Christmas Day) was traditionally the day when the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she wasto be the Mother of Jesus. England only adopted 1st January as the start of the New Year in 1752 whenEngland finally came into step with the rest of Europe and also adopted the Gregorian Calendar. Not onlydid we count our years from 25th March to 25th March, meaning that for the first three months of theyear England was still in the previous years as far as Europe was concerned; we were also 11 days behindEurope since Pope Gregory in 1582 introduced the Leap Year to ensure that every four years the year andthe earth’s orbit round the Sun was re-synchronized. So in England until 1752, the 25th March, the Feastof the Annunciation to Mary was not only New Year’s Day but also Budget Day when allaccounts were rendered and it was a quarter day for paying rents. Budget Day waschanged in 1752 by the addition of 11 days to the date, hence the reason Budget Dayis traditionally still 6th April today.

You may understandably say “so what?” But for me the fact that England reckonedthe years from Lady Day to Lady Day also indicates something of England’straditional veneration of Our Lady Mary the Mother of Jesus. Devotion to Maryused to be so widespread in England that this country acquired the soubriquet“Our Lady’s Dowry”. This title was widely used throughout Europe to describeEngland in the medieval period, as devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary inEngland was particularly strong. It was believed that England belonged insome special way to Mary, who was seen as the country's special intercessor". The late 14th century famous painting called the Wilton Diptych shows thehapless Richard II kneeling before Mary holding the infant Jesus. In thepicture an angel holds the Cross of St George, the staff of which issurmounted by an orb featuring a small map of England.

In the Bible, in John’s Gospel we read that Jesus while onthe cross, commended the care of his Mother Mary to hisBeloved Disciple “and from that hour he (the BelovedDisciple) took her into his own home”. (John 19:27).That is why so many people have images of Mary intheir own homes on the principle that what Jesus saidto his first disciples also applies to those of us whoaspire to be his later followers. The image of Marynursing her Son is a guarantor of the Incarnation, ofthe Word becoming flesh as one of us and livingamongst us, sharing our lives, hence its importancetheologically. One of the most ancient prayers, originally written in Greek, is called sub tuumpraesidium” (Latin = under thy protection) goesthus:We fly to thy protection,O Holy Mother of God;despise not our petitions

COFFEE MORNING THANK YOUMany thanks to all those who came and supported, helped and ate lots of cake at the recent coffeemorning. We raised a superb £310, which meant we could go out and a buy a brand new oven for theCedar Centre on the very same day!

NEW PIANOWe are very grateful to Ted and Lynne Thain for donating their piano to the Cedar Centre. The oldelectronic one had some "technical issues" which we were unable to repair, so we were delighted toreceive this excellent replacement. Apparently it was also the one used during The Trust's very firstfundraising event! The excess money raised from the coffee morning will be going towards supplyingspecial castors for the piano so that the floor is not damaged when it is moved.

The deliverers do a sterling job every month andI am very grateful to them. I would also like to thank particularly Sue Humphries and Carol Mackaoui whomake sure that the magazines get to the deliverers on time.

Last but not least, my thanks go to Margaret, Monica and Gwen who count out all the magazines andfliers and keep me entertained at the same time.

NEWS FROM CASTOR SCHOOLThe school has been filled with Christmas excitement and preparation in the last few weeks of the term.We were delighted to receive a beautiful Nativity Scene carved from olive wood in Bethlehem. TheFoundation Governors – Rector William, Mrs Maggie Noble, Mr David Edwards and Mrs Chris Murrellpresented it to the school at the start of Advent. It sits proudly on our altar next to our Advent ring andhas been the focus of many discussions and reflections about the true meaning of Christmas.

This message was reinforcedby our wonderful Nativityproduction featuring all ofour children in Reception,Year 1 and Year 2.‘BAUBLES’ focused on thestory of Jesus’ birth revisitedthrough the story of schoolchildren preparing forChristmas. It featured somefamiliar characters in theroles of the school teachers.I was particularly impressedby Mr Ratch’s organisationof the school featured in theplay! Our children did anexcellent job of theproduction with greatsinging and acting. Mrs Salisbury did a wonderful job of orchestrating the proceedings and everyone has thoroughly enjoyedthe show.

It was nice to welcome The Evergreens along for their Christmas lunch and they were treated to aperformance afterwards.

We say farewell to Mrs Sue Marsden, one of our teachers, at the end of the term. Mrs Marsden is a keenand able linguist and has passionately trumpeted the importance of learning a language in the four yearsshe has been at the school. In addition she has reinvigorated singing and performance organising ourChristmas Concert for our Year 3 to Year 6 pupils as well as other exciting musical events in the past. Shewill be greatly missed and we wish her all the best for the future. Mrs Helen Boulton will be taking on herrole of teacher in Year 1 for three days a week and will be working with our Deputy Head, Miss SelinaPacey. We will be looking to recruit a full time replacement for September 2015.

To keep fully up to date of the comings and goings of our busy school please have a look at our websitewww.castorschool.com.

2015 will undoubtedly be another busy year and one we are looking to fill with exciting learningopportunities for our pupils. If you are able to help in anyway please do contact the school.
