HomecomingCelebrations 2014
The University of the West Indies, (UWI) Mona Campus will host its annual Homecoming & Commemoration Celebrations over the period February 9-15, 2014. Mona‘s Homecoming & Commemoration Celebrations provide an opportunity to celebrate the founding of the University, to acknowledge its unique position as the only higher education institution with a presence throughout the English speaking Caribbean, while assisting to engender a greater sense of belonging and develop a feeling of camaraderie among staff, students and alumni.
The annual celebrations in February mark the continuation of a tradition which began over 60 years ago. On February 16, 1950 the then University College of the West Indies (UCWI) installed its first Chancellor. Since that time, the date February 16 has been used to commemorate that initial step which marked the beginning of the journey into a full -fledged university. The 2014 Homecoming Celebrations begin with the Commemoration Service at the University Chapel on February 9, 2014 and Exibition at the Main Libruary on February 10, 2014. The Homecoming Celebrations continue with the University Parade of alumni, staff and students at a flag raising ceremony, which will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 in front of the Assembly Hall. The celebrations end on Friday, February 14, 2014 with Caribbean Day, which includes booths and displays depicting life in the Caribbean countries which contribute to the University. This provides opportunities for visitors to taste food from different countries and experience different aspects of Caribbean culture.
All the activities in the Homecoming Celebrations are coordinated by the Marketing and Communications Office in The Registry.

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT DIVISION
IMPACT FACTOROne of the themes of the UWI Strategic Plan 2012-2017, is Employee Engagement. The Human Resources Management Division has been busy ensuring that the Mona Campus engages staff in various ways.
Following on the heels of their successful launch of the training programme ‘Leadership Co-efficient,’ the HRMD has now embarked on the “Impact Factor,” a new training programme designed specifically for Administrative Support Staff to enable better support for Heads of Departments.
Over the course of 2013/2014 Academic Year, ninety six (96) participants are scheduled to cover a total of 21 modules. The Programme is eclectic in nature and blends elements from the Leadership Co-efficient programme with administrative specific responsibilities including Event Coordination, Basic Project Management, Servicing Committees, Records Management Essentials and Creating High Impact Presentations.
The feedback so far from sessions already held are encouraging.
“An Excellent initiative” “Very Informative”“Exceptional Information for Staff “
OFFICE OF GRADUATE STUDIES & RESEARCH
IMPROVING INTERNAL PROCESSESThe Office of Graduate Studies and Research has achieved some success, in keeping with UWI Strategic Plan 2012-2017, to “re-engineer academic and administrative operational processes and procedures to make them simpler, more transparent, efficient, and effective.” This Section has implemented a pilot of the CAPP module in Banner, a mechanism to enable efficient processing and approval of degree awards. In addition testing is now well on the way for the newly developed Thesis Tracker System with features that include the application of examination of Thesis and Research papers, and the Recommendation for Titles and Nomination of Examiners. Of note too, is the 100% compliance achieved from Committee members in the use of newly introduced Sharepoint software for major Campus Committee meetings.
All this could not have been achieved without the commitment and cooperation of our IT team in the Mona Information Technology Services (MITS).

HI-TECH SECURITY!! The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus is preparing to herald in a new era of security beginning 2014. This will be defined by an emphasis on technology-assisted programmes which includes video surveillance systems, a state of the art Monitoring Station and electronic access control. This programme will reduce our reliance on the traditional manual security systems and promises to promote efficiency and effectiveness in our security services. Greater emphasis will be placed on other crime prevention strategies which will be intelligence driven and largely supported by a more reliable system of communication between the security interests on the Campus, on the one hand, and students and staff members on the other.
