This week I was lucky enough to try out Cyc one of the newest and most anticipated cyclingclasses on the scene in NYC In a market that is already filled with some all-star favorites Cychas found a way to stand out with a dance-party vibe and a ride that works ldquothe whole bodythe whole timerdquo Cyc initially opened in Madison Wisconsin where the student population ishigh and caters to a younger crowd with its lower price point ndash $25 per class in NYC ndash andclub-like atmosphere
Irsquove taken quite a few cycling classes before but this class was definitely unique in its whole-body method From the very beginning it was obvious this would be an interactive class myclass was taught by Cyc Method creator Keoni Hudoba who is clearly very passionate aboutwhat he does and had the whole class hollering and getting amped up before the class began
Once the class began we had a few warm-up songs which were tougher than my averagewarm-up We started strong just getting the legs moving with some resistance and we quicklymoved into full-body moves with and without weights The weights in the class are notdumbbells but instead weighted sandbags which makes them easier to maneuver while

cycling When creating Cyc Keoni wanted to incorporate as many activities as possible to getthe best full-body workout while cycling we were also doing boxing moves swimming playingvolleyball and more For four songs we moved through various sports with our weights Thismay sound slightly confusing but trust me it works when yoursquore on the bike By incorporatingdifferent activities you get to work so many different muscles and get a wide range of motionand itrsquos fun to imagine playing all these sports while cycling
Aside from ldquoplaying sportsrdquo on our bikes we also did some traditional cycling activities such asclimbing hills and sprints Through all our movements Keoni was cheering us on and getting usinvolved which made the class feel more like a team and also helped me feel encouraged tocontinue when I was ready to break down I think this team-like atmosphere is unique to find inany fitness class especially one where you are each on individual bikes This is a really strongpoint of Cyc By the end of the class I was exhausted and dripping with sweat but I was alsoexhilarated The high energies of the class and the teacher were contagious and as we leftclass most people hung around chatting and thanking Keoni rather than rushing to the lockerrooms which is rare to see
Bottom line I loved this class I think itrsquos a completely unique and amazing workout and I thinkeveryone should give it a try
After class Keoni was nice enough to sit down with me and chat about Cyc fitness and health[interview below] As I mentioned earlier Keoni is the creator of the Cyc Method and is arenowned trainer The Village Voice named him Best Trainer in 2012 he is an Under Armoursponsored athlete a Master Trainer for Barryrsquos Bootcamp and the creator of the DRENCHEDmethod He is also a fitness success story See below for all the details

Q How did you get into fitness
Thatrsquos a lot Irsquoll try to keep it to a minimum Growing up I was obese and was an opera majorPerforming was my life I went to an audition in college and the director told me I needed tolose weight if I wanted to be serious about opera and right after that it just hit me like a brick Istarted to take fitness classes and then was asked to start teaching classes and from then onone thing led to the next and the ball just started rolling And really in the last four years is whenmy career took off Itrsquos unbelievable to be able to do what I love I pinch myself all the timebecause I canrsquot believe this is where my life has taken me And thatrsquos why Irsquom truly a believer inldquoanything is possiblerdquo
Q Do you still sing at all
A I dohellip in class People ask me all the time if I miss the stage but Irsquom on stage every nightItrsquos just a different venue I get a workout in myself and I get to entertain people Itrsquos amazing
Q Why did you choose cycling
A I was teaching everything before DRENCH my first method which I launched at Equinoxwas all plyometrics and martial arts and then I went to Barryrsquos and was teaching treadmill-floorSo I was like how can I challenge myselfhellip and I didnrsquot know where to go next I took cyclingall the time and was like how can I change this and make it different from whatrsquos alreadythere I really want to take people out of their element and bring them into a show I wantpeople to feel like this is really interactive and they can be anything they want to be and liketheyrsquore part of the show
Q When yoursquore not cycling whatrsquos your favorite workout
A Irsquom a huge believer in cross training There are my fellow Under Armour trainers ndash NatalieUhling has a class called NuFit itrsquos boxing with plyometrics ndash phenomenal Curtis Williams hasa program called Training CAMP I love to be around those people who are going to inspire mejust as much as I inspire them And you really start to find your niche ndash your go-to people Irsquom astrong believer in also having other studios that you go to I go to Flywheel I go to SLTbecause I love other methods I believe that what we do at Cyc is completely different thanwhatrsquos out there and I believe the marketrsquos big enough for everyone
Q Whatrsquos your favorite song to workout to
A Thatrsquos tough I would say right now at this moment Tsunami I donrsquot even know who itrsquos byBut I think that whatrsquos great about Cyc is all the cycologists make their own playlists andeveryone has their different style so I get to learn about so many songs from them And I dothink that music is key itrsquos key for everyone
Q What are your favorite pre- and post-workout snacks
A My favorite pre-workout snack is the mean green smoothie at Liquiteria and I love their PBand banana sandwich on Ezekiel bread My post would behellip this is going to be so bad Myfriend owns a bakery called City Cakes and they have these salted caramel cupcakes ndash thatrsquosmy workout Irsquoll probably go there after this
Q What are your biggest challenges or weaknesses when it comes to fitness and

A I think my biggest challenge is Irsquom addicted to food That part of me has never left I think theamazing thing is my passion for fitness counterbalances it Thatrsquos one of my biggest thingswhen I train clients ndash I allow for cheat days and I want my clients to tell me when theyrsquovecheated and I promise wersquoll work it off but I want them to be counscious of what theyrsquoreeating So I think my biggest thing would be food but thatrsquos also why I love owning a fitnesscompany and working out
Q What motivates you to be stay active and healthy
A One I want to live to be very old to help my family out My family are my 1 fans Two wouldbe having those ldquoa-hardquo moments when I realize where Irsquove come Today I got to go to a schoolto be a motivational speaker and I had that moment of ldquoI canrsquot believe where this has goneand that Irsquom going to be a motivational speaker when I always needed a motivational speakergrowing uprdquo Those moments Seeing people in class knowing that they took the time to cometo see me as their cycologist is more medicine than anyone could ever give me

Damn girl
When I found out that one of the hardest barre instructors was starting to teach at the baby empire that is
Cyc Fitness I scrambled to get my bum on over there I was excited and nervous at the same time about the
prospect of dying a sweaty death on a bike I have a lovehate relationship with Adina - I am never in as
much pain in a barre class as when I take hers but I just keep coming back for more because reasons Did
she deliver that same level of burn-i-ness in Cyc Yes Hell yes

Proceed with caution
Heres the thing about Adina - she does not coddle her students Thats just not her style Shes definitely the
type to straight up verbally tell you to work harder fix your form and in this class get on the right foot and
the right beat This is something to bear in mind when you walk into her classes
At Cyc she personally greeted a ton of people before class and explained the five (yes five) handlebar
positions how to use the resistance knob and how to ride properly
The ride
The first thing I noticed was that Cyc like Soulcycle focuses on riding to the beat Adina was adamant about
the class being on the right foot literally A couple of times she said If youre not on the right foot youre
on the wrong foot The structure of the class went something like this
Intro jog with tapbacks - Adina demonstrated what a tapback was for those who had never done them
before
Fast jog with slide backs We slid our bums back every two counts (THIS WAS SO HARD considering our
legs were moving so quickly)
Jumps Runs
FOUR ARMS SONGS (more on this later)
Faster hill
Heaviest hill ever - felt like pushing through sand
Sprints to finish
Stretch

What the What
Dudes there were four songs devoted to arm work My friend had warned me about this but I was like pshhh
whatevs Imma take these 5lbers Shit got heavy At Cyc they try to incorporate arm exercises that replicate
sports movements This is what Im referring to
Swimming - freestyle swoops
Boxing - tons of punch variations
Rowing - well rowing with a focus on back muscles
Abs - yes I know this isnt a sport but I cant figure out what sport these moves were similar to Just
regular ab crunches and oblique pulls
The whole arm series was difficult I recognize that I opted for the 5lb weights but hey go big or go home
amirite At one point Adina propped herself on my friends arm and my arm (we were siting together)and
told us not to drop her Cruel Adinas a tiny thing but obvs we dropped her
The Good Stuff
1 Form Check-ins Adina often asked us to check our form whether we were riding or rolling out our arms
with weights
2 Music The playlist was awesome A good mix of EDM hip hop and alternative
3 Personal engagement Adina got off the bike several times and went up to people personally and made
sure they were trying their hardest If she knew the person shed give an extra push
Constructive Crits
1 Positive reinforcements As I mentioned earlier Adina is a blunt person While that doesnt bother me
I could see how it might be a turn-off for some people A little encouragement or a compliment here and
there goes a long way especially to people who are new to class or new to the instructor
2 Biceps please We did a lot of work in our shoulders and triceps but barely any in our biceps Some
more of that to round out the arms series would be great
Conclusion
Adinas Cyc class was undoubtably the hardest spin class I have taken in a very long time From the slide
backs to the extremely heavy hill to all the arms work it was crazy I loved it and I cant wait to go back

In recent years quite a few indoor cycling studios have opened in the city It takes major differentiators tobreak into the spin scene here But when I heard CYC Fitness which was previously only in the collegetowns of Austin and Madison was headed to Manhattan I was well psyched CYC was created by UnderArmour-sponsored athlete Keoni Hudoba to do three things give college students a place to be social whilethey sweat give back to the community by donating to charity for each mile ridden and give the spin-obsessed a more well-rounded workout All of that is now available inside DavidBarton at Astor Place

This is the first indoor cycling studio in the city to be located inside a fully-equipped gym DavidBarton is alllow lighting thumping music mirrored walls winding staircases and velvet curtains Purchasing a CYCclass credit (called a road trip) gives you access to the entire gym within two hours of your class includingthe giant locker room Thatrsquos a major differentiator CYC all edgy and modern fits right in on the bottomfloor of DavidBarton And the staff couldnrsquot be friendlier I got to meet Keoni when I arrived with fellow fitnessblogger Michelle Roos but Dara Hartman led our road trip

Dara is a firecracker From the moment we clipped in and started our warmup she was shouting into hermicrophone turning the music up and whipping her hair around CYC has an amazing sound system thebest lights Irsquove ever seen in a studio and an actual drum on the instructor stand Everyone rides with thebeat and completes a series of ldquochallengesrdquo that include tapbacks jumps sprints etc
The big difference from other cycling experiences was the use of weights Everyone used 1-2 lb sandbagweights to complete strength segments inspired by different sports While riding our bikes and holding ourweights we performed movements based on volleyball swimming and boxing The boxing was by far myfavorite Dara put on Snapbacks amp Tattoos which had the perfect beat and even walked up to me to haveme uppercut my weights into her hands And then she told me I was strong after class which made mehappy dance inside Throughout the ride Dara fluidly played with the lights and the drum to compliment herplaylist She led the room with a sassy no-nonsense attitude
I left feeling the workout in my arms legs and abs which is more than I can say about other cycling classesIrsquove been to I also walked out to find the New York Rugby Club waiting to go in for a private road trip I wastempted to clip back in right then but I know Irsquoll be back for more

You are so over indoor cycling
Because I mean there are only so many stroke variations and tap backs you can do on a bike before
everything feels like old news Right Wrong
Welcome to the indoor cycling make-over
CYC just drove the good ol spin class to the surgeon and got a Boob Lift
The first three songs felt like a poppin spin class Song one was a moderate resistance rhythm jog
with extreme sass Songs two and three were jumps that were done in a round It was like we were
creating some elaborate musical composition with our bodies The energy was buck-wild
Songs 4-8 went to town on the arms Yea you heard that right Thats five full songs of arm-related
work You better get those one-pound sand weights yall hear me
You use all your vacay days in 45 min Because youll be traveling to Peru and Jamaica You might
even get to take a ride in Docs Time Machine as Keoni escorts you through the thick waters of Huckleberry
Finns travels down the Mississippi Or maybe thats my vivid imagination Who knows where your mind will
take you when you feel like youre fighting for your life
Its basically an Off-Broadway show Like one of those crowd interactive shows where there are flash
dancers and lights and drumming Its an activity an experience you cannot miss

My favorite parts
1 The rowing We used our towels pulled taught as Oars Keoni designated one chick who was rocking a
neon orange t-shirt as our leader He asked her name and told the rest of the pack not to let him drown
While we were doing isolated towel holds at shoulder height Keoni would fall into our towels applying
some serious resistance that made me want to scream (actually I did scream A few NSFW gems even
slipped out) It was redonk hard
2 EVERYTHING with the drum Keoni teased us with a drum that was bathing on the stage in the lights
For most of the class hed sporadically hit it telling us we had to wait for it Then finally during the row
he killed the lights and the room went pitch black Next thing we knew he was beating the bajeez out of
the drum At first I thought he was on stage and then I felt a mega bang to my right and realized the
man is RUNNING AROUND THE ROOM WITH THE DRUM My chest was beating adrenaline was
coursing through me and I felt a pounding inside my core and through my legs and in every fiber of my
being as I PUSHED the damn pedals like they had all of the bad things in my life in them And I prevailed
Perhaps the most exciting moment of 2014 thus far
3 The boxing We did a segment with punching routines using sand weights Keoni called out the sequence
and we followed - Right LEFT RIGHT Left RIGHT RIGHT We were seated for this on thick resistance
but I was getting so into the punches that the arm cardio alone was burn-a-licous Keoni came around
and had us knock the shit outta his hands I think I went a lil cray cray and he announced to the class not
to mess with me Dayum son
Keoni the infamous Keoni
For those of you who are either new to following NYC fitness or have had your head stuck up some cows rear
end for the past few years Keoni is Keoni Hes the man who created Cyc Hes a Barrys Bootcamp master
instructor He once changed lives over at SoulCycle He is a huge Under Armor big cheese And hes also a
really rad guy
There are no words no words I could string together to do this man justice Hes been a personal
inspiration to me (even helped me prepare for a cycling audition way back when) a role model in terms of
shedding a full buck off his weight and someone I think of when I need to channel FIRE
The skipper At many points during the show Keoni propelled himself off the bike and started speed-
skipping the isles of the room during countdowns He got the group in on the action telling us
1098 and immediately asking us how many Wed scream 7 because sht man it burned He
continued how many -6 how many -5 how many -4 how many -3 how many -2 how many
-1 Now usually I shudder more than my chihuahua when it comes to group countdowns but this didnt
feel like an admission application to a cult at all It was just group participation and I was happy to give it
Definitely a tough ass The longer I know Keoni the more I see him DEMANDING excellence At Barrys
Bootcamp he doesnt EVER let you walk on the treads At Cyc he does not tolerate imperfection or
laziness And he does not care if your grandmother is the Queen of England or if you write for The New
York Times - if your form is off if your bike set up is wrong if you are using your celly during his class he

will be letting you know that gravy is sour sauce in his class
Operation Diva At one point Keoni was explaining the handlebar positions glanced down and got
distracted By his own deltoid Then he paused and lifted his ripped arm exclaiming Oh shit Got that
from Cyc and carried on This was HILARIOUS
But dont be intimidated There is a reason why Keoni is wildly accepted as DA BOMB DIGGITY in NYC
for upwards of three years now As long as youre willing to give it your all hell get you there Though he
was not happy when a few burners refused to turn their resistance all the way up (letting them know that
he did not go from 300 pounds to 180 pounds by faking it) he was happy to dish modifications for each
ride He can tell when youre working your hardest and when youre just plain too smooth to groove And
burners if you come to CYC you best be prepared to let it loose No stiff riding allowed says the master
1000 PERCENT 247 Keoni hurls himself into his classes From his deliberate music choices to his fluid
bike dances to the sweat that projectiles from his body onto any surface within a three foot radius to his
after-class hugs high-fives and pictures with his burners he is truly the cream of the crop
So did I like it
Dude I freakin loved it Keoni is a leader If you can score a spot in his ride just live in the moment Let your
life and your passion and your groove breathe a little bit If youve grown a little tired of indoor cycling this
class should shake your spin foundation and leave you hashtagging winning on the social mediaz Get ready

Please dont kick me off of RYB So I took Keonis class at SoulCycle once and I was underwhelmed to be
honest But this class sounds interesting and different and I would like to try it I mean drums Do you think I
should Or if I didnt respond to Soul Keoni will I probably also not respond to CYC Keoni
