This Month from the Pres….. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK – JANUARY 2013 I was going to talk about procrastination, but I might put it off till next month, or maybe the month after . . . What I would like to mention, though, is our convoy procedures on trips . . . it appears that our convoy procedures are starting to slacken off, so to familiarise everyone with them, there is a page in the Red Book, of which all club members have a copy. Just a suggestion – perhaps have a peruse before the next trip In a nutshell, the main problem seems to be people turning on intersections / junctions / forks etc without waiting for the following vehicle to catch up – then of course, the next vehicle arrives at the junction and doesn’t know which direction to take. On gravel roads, we do tend to spread out because of visibility / dust issues, this seems to be mainly where problems are occurring. Obviously the concept of a “convoy” is to have all vehicles driving in a continuous group, staying together as much as possible, so it’s important that we think about the person behind us. Lastly, be aware that the Fire Extinguisher / First Aid Kit Secret Police may be lurking at morning tea or lunch stops on any future trips . . .

What will we do Answer questions and have fun and win prizes.

Other stuff This is a fairly simple overnighter.

Trip rating = easy = social.

You will need sufficient fuel to get to Pumphreys

Bridge and back again, an evening meal and a brekkie

and whatever else you may need to get you through a

quiz night and a campfire.

If you decide to make it a 4WD driving weekend you

need to make sure you have everything with you as

per normal 4WD playing. Also factor in that the trip

rating may be different depending on where you go

(or are taken).

Meals are your responsibility – if you want to cook on

Saturday night allow for the start time. Sunday will

be whatever you wish to do.

The weather is likely to be cold – warm – wet – dry –

windy – calm or a combination of all of these.

You will need to bring a contribution of wood for the

campfire.

Accom. The area is big enough for swags, tents, camper

trailers, caravans, 5th wheelers and cruise ships. There

are toilets available but no showers.

The hall will be opened at 6.00pm Saturday.

The hall will be locked at 8.30am Sunday.

also be other prizes for other things.

Depending on what happens there may be a hand

winching challenge during the Saturday afternoon –

you will need to move my 4WD the length of the

cricket pitch with the winning team (3 persons) getting

an incredible prize.

If I think of anything else I will let you know - if there is anything you need to

know do not hesitate to contact me.

Israelite Bay Trip

Boxing Day 2012 to New Years Day 2013

by Brett Christie

The trip to Israelite Bay was looking to have been planned perfectly. Perth was going to be

stinking hot for the next week, and the great southern was going to be at least 10 degrees

cooler.

Bailey and I met Aaron and Felicia at the Rock Inn Karragullen along with prospective

member Matt and his children Britney and Jaylen.

We left at 7am. We had a brief toilet stop at Corrigin, and then a stop to top up fuel at Hyden

for Aaron and Matt (we expected fuel to be more a bit more expensive in Norseman) before

hitting the Hyden-Norseman Road. The condition of this road was terrific and more

picturesque than the usual bitumen run.

Plaque on Lake Johnson

Arriving in Norseman, we all topped up our fuel, before heading to the Telegraph Track Road

about 17kms south. We setup camp early about 1km down this track. It was hot, and there

was little breeze. Bailey got out his cricket set, which became a trend from that point

onwards. Aaron managed to send and SMS to the Sheridan's to let them know where we were

camped. A stiff breeze managed to get through, and then we all worried about falling limbs

from trees....there was evidence everywhere.

In the morning, after packing up camp, we popped back in briefly to Norseman to check

messages, and Matt topped up on some water.

About 30 minutes later we were back on the Telegraph Track again. We crossed the salt lake,

not far from our camp that night. It proved uneventful, quite different to Aaron's previous

visit which required track building to get across.

Page 8: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

A fallen tree slowed our path, but the Trusty Playdo of Felicia's soon towed it out of the way.

Jaylen saw a snake, but we were unable to locate it to take a photo.

We stopped for lunch as a water hole close to the Balladonia turnoff. Still quite warm, but the

temperature was heading the right way.

The Balladonia Road Israelite Bay started off OK, but the Trusted Playdo and the Mighty

Patrol started to find it uncomfortable. Aaron dropped his tyre pressures to 20, while Matt’s

rear right bumper taillight fell out. The Discovery was riding on air, so the corrugations were

quite comfortable. We encountered plenty of bull dust holes along the way.

The temperature was still heading south.....we were looking forward to the respite from the

Antarctic winds.

After checking out Pine Hill, and viewing Mount Ragged from a distance, the track then

started to wind its way down towards Israelite Bay. It was slow going. The edge of the salt

lake was great to drive into the Bay.

The camp sites were readily available, so we picked our site and setup for the next 3 days.

The kids got stuck into cricket, and then the adults joined in.

Page 9: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

The following day we had a visit from a local monitor lizard. The lizard gave us about an

hour of entertainment. We gave it a couple of different sized eggs but both proved a little too

big for it to crush and swallow, but it gave it a red hot go.

Afterwards we explored the Old Telegraph Station ruins and the grave sites of the post

masters that worked at the Station.

I took my hand held UHF with me, and could hear Mark Sheridan and his father-in-law Allan

on the radio. We said hello and let them know where we were camped. The Sheridan's

lunched at the ruins.

The kids had the cricket set with them, so we decided to head down to the salt lake for the

"Salt Lake Ashes". We spent about an hour here. The wind was going with the batting

strokes, so fielders had a big job on their hands to retrieve the ball. We took turns at batting,

and as the pitch was a bit slippery it was quite hilarious watching the runs between the

wickets. Even taking off towards the ball would see the fielder having difficulty gaining

traction.

Page 10: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

Howzat!!

About 20 mins after getting back to camp the Sheridan convoy arrived and set up camp. Once

Claude and Georgette were introduced to the rest of the crew, cricket was back on again.

Later, we all headed out to view the beach, which was quite weedy, but we all got to wash the

dirt from our feet.

Dinner was cooked and dispatched, and then the kids got stuck into spotlight games.

The Sheridan's advised that they were only staying the night, and were heading back to

Esperance in the morning. We were all disappointed to hear this.

After saying our goodbyes in the morning, our 3 cars headed up the inland track to Bilbunya

Dunes. It was a very interesting drive as we followed some well preserved poles from the

Overland Telegraph Line, but it seemed we would never get to those dunes. We ended up at

the eastern end. Here we came across international travellers in a left hand drive Discovery 3.

After airing down to more sand friendly pressures, we crossed the dunes to the beach and

headed west. We found a spot a couple of kilometres down to park so that the kids could do

some sand boarding (thanks to the Sheridan's for loaning their sand board). But it was

overcast and the wind was howling. Plenty of sand managed to enter our cars. The kids had a

great run around, and we even dug for fresh water at the bottom of the dunes. The

international travellers passed us in the dunes....they certainly looked like very serious

overland travellers.

Page 11: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

None of us really wanted to go back the inland track, so decided to head the 70kms down the

beach. We covered the distance much faster, but soon came to a halt where the rocks and

water met the beach. We decided to have a late lunch at this spot to contemplate our situation.

Going back was not an option as both the Playdo and Patrol would have fuel issues.

Any idea what the caption for this one is ???

Not exactly what you think, but you are on the right track

Near this point we found a track, but with thick seaweed blocking up our escape it did not

look great. I found an exit about a kilometre further up the beach. After working out a line to

take, I fired the Discovery up and over, with the rest following shortly afterwards. The drive

back to the camp was only about 30 minutes from here.

After 3 nights of camping we decided the next day to head towards Luck Bay near Esperance.

Once packed, we had an uneventful drive back to civilisation. Aaron and Matt filled their

tanks at Condingup, and I made myself and ice cold moccha. Phone reception returned at this

point, so I gave my wife an update on where we were.

After arriving at the park entrance to the Cape Le Grande, we found out that camping was

fully booked. The lady I spoke to told me of Dunn Rocks campsite, so we all agreed to head

the 30kms back.

The beach at Dunn Rocks was just a large version on Lucky Bay. Camping was not as pretty,

but better than the overflow caravan park at Esperance. We setup camp on the lee side of the

rock, and then we all headed down to the beach for a dip. This beach is renowned for dead

whales washing up and therefore the white pointers liked to have a feast. We did come across

a whale carcass, but luckily no Noah's. There were some nuts in a GQ and Banchie trying to

bugger access for all. Going way too fast, and driving into the surf.....losers!

Page 12: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

The following day (New Years Eve) we went for a spin along the beach. Felicia and Aaron

started to hear some noise for the rear of the Playdo. After inspection I found that the rear left

shock absorber had completely parted way on the top mount. Felicia removed this in a flash.

We headed onto the rocks at Victoria Harbour. This was a beautiful spot to spend the

morning. The water was stunning and the perfect temperature. The kids spent a few hours

exploring the rocks, and with the assistance of some young aboriginal boys, were able to

catch their own crabs.

It was a bit smelly

After lunch we head back towards camp, and stopped off at the impressive sand dunes. No

point not going in and having a play! After working through a few techniques on making the

Discovery work on sand, I decided to give the biggest dune a crack. The night before we

were watching vehicles getting stuck on this dune, so it was not looking good for me.

I asked Aaron to come with me and attempt one saw me getting stuck right at the top. We

radioed Felicia to bring the Trusty Playdo over to where we were. Felicia arrived at the

Page 13: January 2013 - Peel 4X4 Club Magazine.pdfPEEL4x4 CLUB QUIZ NIGHT Where CWA HALL PUMPHREYS BRIDGE When 18-19MAY2013 Questions will start 7.30pm sharp What will we do Answer questions

bottom of the dune, but called Aaron to come down and drive it up. Aaron had two goes, and

on the second attempt got a smidgen under 9 metres from me....just enough to join the two

cars. A slight pull got me moving backwards.

I decided to have a second attempt, and Aaron said "do you really want to get pulled out

twice by a Playdo".....that spurred me on. Using most of my 600nms of grunt I pushed the

loud pedal a bit harder.....but it was a bit too hard. I went over the top and come down the

other side at least a car length down the dune. But all was ok. After arriving back to where

the Aaron and Matt were I realised I must have pushed hard into the sand as the bar was

covered in that beautiful white sand. We spent about 5 minutes removing about 10kgs of

sand, and then headed back to camp. On the way back we decided to check out the more

western campsite and beach. Beach was nice....campsite was very ordinary.

Fed and cleaned, the kids started to fire a few poppers off for their early New Years Eve

celebrations.

Bailey doing the dishes !!!

The kids crashed between 8.30 and 9.00 and the adults hit the sack at 10.....bit of a fizzer.

After brekkie, we headed into Esperance. After hitting the bitumen I noticed my rear tyre

pressures getting quite high. As I was fuelling up in Esperance I decided to adjust pressures

then. Everyone 10 seconds or so, my tyre pressure monitor would go off and on. I changed

the power for the display to the rear battery and this stopped. Strange! We turned left to head

towards town, and as I did the engine went into moments of limp mode. I pulled over,

lowered the pressures and checked under the bonnet. Nothing obvious. Headed off again and

in a few moments, the instrument cluster lit up.

Oh bugger.

After Felicia suggested checking ABS sensors and making sure that they were all plugged in

on each wheel, I did a hard system reset.

The fault never came back, so I feel that the ABS sensors picked up on the high pressures

(have read about this happening).

I refuelled in Esperance and we all headed home. Aaron and Felicia headed west from Lake

Grace and Matt and I headed towards Hyden.

A relaxing and adventurous trip with good company.

AUSTRALIA DAY FACTS

Australia Day is on January 26 and commemorates the establishment of the first settlement at Port Jackson, now part of Sydney, in 1788. It is an opportunity for Australians to come together to celebrate their country and culture. There are

reflections on the achievements of the nation and explorations of way to make the country even better in the future.

Background

On January 26, 1788, the First Fleet of 11 ships from Great Britain arrived at Port Jackson, which now forms Sydney Harbour. The First Fleet was led by Captain Arthur Philip. He established the Colony of New South Wales, the first penal colony in Australia. By 1808, January 26 was being celebrated as “First Landing Day” or “Foundation Day” with drinking and merriment.

Thirty years after the arrival of the First Fleet, in 1818, the Governor of Australia ordered a 30-gun salute, hosted a dinner ball at Government House and gave government employees a holiday. In the following years, employees of banks and other organizations were also given holidays. In the following decades, horse racing and regattas were popular activities on January 26.

In 1838, Foundation Day was Australia's first public holiday. It was also the occasion of the first public celebrations of the founding of Australia. The shores of Sydney Harbour were crowded and there was a firework display. By 1888, January 26 had become known as 'Anniversary Day' was celebrated in all colonies except Adelaide. In 1888, the centenary of the arrival of the First Fleet was celebrated with ceremonies, exhibitions, banquets, regattas, fireworks and the unveiling of a statue of Queen Victoria.

By 1935, January 26 was known as Australia Day in all states except New South Wales, where it was still called Anniversary Day. In 1938, large scale celebrations were held. These included a re-enactment of the landing of the First Fleet, which did not mention the convict status of many of the passengers on these ships. The re-enactment is included the removal of a group of Aborigines. Shortly before the celebrations, a group of Aboriginal activists arranged a “Day of Mourning”. They used this to campaign for citizenship and equal rights for Aborigines.

From 1946, January 26 was known as Australia Day in all states. However, the public holiday was moved to the Monday nearest to January 26 to create a long weekend. Since 1994, the Australia Day public holiday has been on January 26 in all states and territories.

The anniversary of the first permanent European settlement in Australia is not a cause for celebration for all citizens. Indigenous Australians often feel that the celebrations on Australia Day exclude them and their culture, which was thriving for thousands of years before the arrival of the First Fleet.

Symbols

The main symbols of Australia Day are the symbols of Australia. These include the Australian national flag, with its representations of the Union Jack, the Commonwealth Star and the five stars of the Southern Cross, and the national anthem "Advance Australia Fair". Other symbols include the Golden Wattle, which is the national floral emblem, the opal, which is the national gemstone and the national colors of green and gold.

UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT – BRETT CHRISTIE I was born 25th Feb 1970 in West Footscray Victoria.

Dad was in the Air Force, mum was a Nurse. Shortly after, we moved to Penang where dad was stationed as an RAAF aircraft engineer working on the Mirage. My brother Scott was born in Penang on the 25th February 1972....something to do with mum and dad’s anniversary night ;-) I spent my years growing up between Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW, to Garden Suburbs in Newcastle, to Maitland, to Old Bar and Taree on the mid north coast, to Lismore. I grew up around 4 wheel drives. My father and step-mum owned Recreational Accessories in Gosford....way before ARB. Dad invented the current A pillar snorkel and had all the patents. But an employee (that later became Safari) got around the patent with a detachable top. As we see today patents are fairly worthless! Fraser Island and the Wattigans were favourite off-road adventures. In 1985, I sat for the Commonwealth Bank entrant’s exam when I was in Taree. The Bank tracked me down in Lismore and offered me a job in 1986....I was only 16 3/4's at the time. I gave it a crack as they were going to pay me to do year 12 by correspondence and other studies later on to become an accountant. In August 1987 my step father moved to WA for a job opportunity. The family decided to move over. I applied for a transfer with CBA and it seems that Lismore Branch could not get rid of me fast enough as it was approved a few days later. Late August 1987 I started at CBA Maddington. This branch was renowned for hold ups. In April 1989 I applied for a Job in Karratha with the CBA. I got it, and moved in May 1989. In Feb 1990 I met my wife Nicole. In Karratha when it rains you don't walk across to the shops....you drive. Nicole walked over to try and purchase an umbrella. When it rains in Karratha umbrellas are of no help....especially when it's a cyclone that's dumping the rain. I saw Nicole standing under the eaves of the shopping centre, so I reversed back and asked if she wanted a lift back to her work....BankWest. She hopped in and the rest is history. We now live in Orange Grove in the foothills with 2 kids (Bailey and Teagan), 4 horses (Heinz, Minty, Sunny and Digby), Jimmy the travelling cat (I took him for a walk to Coolgardie, and 6 months later he made it home....by accident of course), Amber the Golden Retriever, GForce the Guinea Pig, and two hermit crabs. I am a qualified financial adviser and assist people with mortgages, debt reduction, wealth creation (property, managed funds and super) and personal insurance.

My previous 4 wheel drives have been a Subaru Touring Wagon 1990, Nissan Pathfinder 1988, Land Rover Discovery 1993, Land Rover Discovery 2000 and Nissan Patrol 2004. I now have a VW Touareg V6 3.0 2008 and Land Rover Discovery V6 3.0 2012. Nicole and I travelled around Australia in the Scubby in 1993, The Gibb River Road and Kimberly's in 2003, the Tanami and Canning Stock Route in 2008, and Great Central Road and central Australia in 2011. We have travelled some amazing roads and tracks, but still have many more amazing adventures in store. I have not yet made it to Kakadu, Cape York or Tasmania...these are on my wish list. We love camping. We get to camp pretty often, mostly to equestrian events where Nicole competes and we usually head away on Fridays and come back Sunday evenings. Our Horse Float is decked out similar to a caravan. Our Current Campers are an Open Sky Roof Topper and a Jayco Expanda Outback (Camprite next.....hopefully). Brett Christie

Thanks Brett for going under the spotlight this month and a very

interesting read.
