January 2013 Newsletter
EditorialEditorialEditorialEditorial Over the last month everyone seemed to be rushing around preparing for the festive season ahead,
completing their final tasks, projects and events in order to enjoy the holiday. We trust that all
members had a good break and quality time spent with family and friends. For those members that
were working during the month of December we trust that all will get a well-deserved break later this
year.
January 2013 is upon us and exiting times lie ahead for WPA. Not only is it the start of the New Year
but also a time to prepare for the action packed calendar that lies ahead. I trust that 2013 will be
the year where each member achieves their dreams and aspirations. That all athletic goals set for
the year will be achieved with quality times, distances and heights. May it be a year without injury
and that planned events are hosted at the highest standard possible.
For clubs, the start of the year means retaining your current members, encouraging new members to
join, as well as creating opportunities for your club to strengthen in numbers. Please ensure that when
signing up new members, they have received clearance and are in good standing with their
previous club.
The Online Licence Registration process will assist with multiple benefits to the clubs and their
members. This is a major milestone and the future of athletics and athletic data has changed for the
better. Please find below detailed information.
We wish every WPA member a wonderful year filled with peace and many blessings. Let us work
together to make WPA the best administrative province in the country.

Jakes Jacobs
ONLINE REGISTRATION SYSTEM
Athletics South Africa has implemented new technological innovations to assist with the
administration of the sport.
Online Licence Registration:
The new online licence registration system has been implemented. Most of 2012 was spent
developing the system, and it is still a work in progress. Any suggestions for improvements will
definitely be welcomed.
The system works as follows. It has many layers, with visibility of information determined by the level
access.
(a) The athlete will register and complete their detail (as they would on a licence form). Part of
this process includes the indemnity. They will then choose a province and club. Please note
that this does not mean that the club will or has to accept the athlete.
The athlete can only see their own information.
Not only athletes can register – we would prefer that all coaches, administrators and
technical officials who join clubs also register.
(b) The club’s administrator will accept the member and, where applicable, allocated a licence
number to the member. (It is up to the club to decide how this is done – registration first
before handing over the number or the other way around.) The club does not have to
accept the member and would most likely only do this after being paid. There can be more
than one administrator per club.
To move from one club to another a member will have to get clearance from their existing
club (done online). (Where a club acts unreasonably in refusing clearance, the provincial
administrator can override that refusal and grant clearance.)
The club administrator can also amend the club info on the site.
The club administrator can only see the club’s members and can edit and also add members
(for those athletes without internet access). The club administrator has to be registered to be
made an administrator.
(c) The provincial administrator (and there can also be more than one) adds new clubs,
allocates number ranges to the clubs (i.e. if club A is given licences 100-200, the provincial
administrator loads them on the system), and can access the details of all members
registered to clubs in their province.
The provincial administrator(s) need to be registered on the system. They will be able to
perform the functions of the club administrators where they are unable to do so because of
lack of access to the internet.
(d) Athletics South Africa’s administrators shall have access to all levels of information and can
perform the functions of all other levels of administrator.
There are numerous benefits to the system and all provinces are requested to embrace the new
technology. Included in these benefits are that it will be possible to confirm that an athlete is
registered for licence insurance purposes. It will also be possible to extract information for reports,
contact information, etc., all at the click of a button.

The 2012 Race Walking Calendar drew to a close with a bit of an anti-climax as a result of the
cancellation of some events, particularly after a very successful and busy couple of months. With this
in mind, the WPA Race Walking Commission has set about with some exciting plans for 2013 to
encourage growth in the sport of Race Walking.
As a commission, each individual has been committed to working together as a team and the results
have been evident with a very successful 2012. The WPA Race Walking Commission celebrated their
past year with a social evening out, together with spouses at Krugmann’s Grill in the Waterfront. The
evening paid tribute to the 2011 League Walk winners, the awards which were erroneously
neglected at the recently held WPA Annual Awards. The 2012 League Walk winners will be awarded
at the WPA Awards evening in 2013.
The 2011 League Walk points for ladies were jointly awarded to Wendy Josephs and Cobie Miller for
both earning exactly 69 points and who both attended every single League meeting. The Men’s
ladder was won by Jurgen Spencer who also attended every single meeting and earned 10 points
at each of those meetings based on his outstanding times, to earn an absolute maximum of 80
points.
The Race Walking League Club trophy for 2011 was accepted by Cobie on behalf of Spartan
Harriers who achieved a whopping 1426 points, with Run/Walk for Life in second place with 486. So,
come on clubs – get your walking members earning points for the 2013 Race Walking League.

We hope that you have had a wonderful festive holiday and wish you all the best with all your
personal sporting goals for 2013.

ARD Athletic Club – supports development of running in disadvantaged areas
The Comrades ultra-marathon
Billed as the ultimate human race, this 90km endurance event attracts runners from across the world
to attempt the run between Durban and Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Many aspire to this dream, some achieve fulfillment while others consider it a financial reality too big
to achieve alone. ARD AC of Grassy Park has recognized the aspirations of two of its runners to
realize this goal. Two runners, who hail from the Lavender Hill area, are long serving members of the
club. Runners who have regularly excelled at the Two Oceans Ultra-marathon, Peninsula Marathon
and Cape Town Marathon – who now desire to complete the Holy Grail of road running.
Abdul Muizh Lewin and Reuben Frank will join the ranks of runners in June 2013 at the start of the
Comrades Marathon in Durban. Flights, accommodation and entry fee has been sponsored by the
club. They will be joined by a support team from the club during their stay there.
We wish them well, along with the other participants and look forward to continuing the
development of running in Grassy Park and surrounds. ARD intends continuing this sponsorship in the
future and hopes this will inspire others from the area to take up road running.
HELDERBERG HARRIERS
2012 MR PRICE SPORT WINELANDS EVENT RAISES OVER R11 000!
Helderberg Harriers and Stellenbosch Animal Welfare Society would like to thank all the runners that
made donations for the Stellenbosch Animal Welfare Society during the Mr Price Sport Winelands
event. A total of R11 442 was raised.
SANLAM ROAD RUNNING CLUB The annual athletes' exodus from the Cape Metropole to the picturesque Boland took place on 28
November when everyone headed for the farm Klein Simonsvlei to tackle the Sanlam Niel
Joubert Plaaswedloop. The urbanites experienced tremendous late spring weather between the
panoramic mountains, later in the evening crowned by a magnificent full moon in the east. Close
to 1 100 athletes took on the difficult route on the northern slopes of Simonsberg. As usual, they were supported by the Sanlam Road Running Club members who organised and
served as officials and helpers during the race. On the Sunday after the race, the 1st of December,
the hard working club members were offered the opportunity to do the race (of course in a much
relaxed way!) and to relax afterwards with a braai under the stately old trees on the farm. It was a
delightful experience!
Michael Hendriks of the Sanlam club made Annetjie Claassen and some of her team members at one of the
use of a bicycle to support the athletes. registration venues before the race.

TRAIL RUNNING UPDATE
Athletics South Africa has initiated a sub-committee to consider how trail running in South Africa
should be structured. It is chaired by Altus Schreuder from Boland and WPA is represented by Allan
Ryninks (Wild Runner Club).
The first outcome of their deliberations is to appoint the Addo Elephant 76km trail run (Sat 2 March
2013) as the SA Ultra Trail Championships and the main selection race for choosing an SA team to
take part at the IAU World Trail champs in Wales on 6/7 July 2013. Athletes wanting to be considered
must enter the Addo event in the normal manner at www.extrememarathons.com. They will only be
sending senior men and women as there are no age categories at the World champs.
The ASA committee has also called for organisers to bid to stage the SA Long Distance trail
championships (35 to 45km). This will take place between 20 April and 2 June 2013. In due course
they will also advertise for events to stage the short distance Mountain Racing format (10 to 14km).
On the local front the Trail WP committee has been quietly moving things along. The progress WP has
made in terms of “structuring” trail running is definitely acknowledged by the ASA trail committee
and our experience is assisting move things in a positive direction.
TrailWP recently held a very positive meeting with SA National Parks officials to discuss matters
relating to our use of the mountain. It is probable that an EMP (Environmental Management Plan) will
be developed for trail running – which is facilitated as a public participation exercise – and will help
clarify the use of SANPARKS property.
A TrailWP subcommittee has produced a logo for the association which will be used in future to
identify events that meet our standards for organisation. We hope to have a website up and running
soon. The trail events that take place in Western Province have been added to the WPA 2013 event
calendar. For more information on trail events please look at www.trailrunning.co.za
If you would like to be kept up to date on trail matters please consider joining TrailWP either as an
individual or as a club. There is no charge and no commitments. We will add you to our email group
and data base. Please complete the membership form and forward it to [email protected]
See you on the mountain.
