Grandfalls-Royalty

makes history with

playoff run

In 2011 the Grandfalls Cowboys had an 11‐2 record, losing in the quarterfinal game to Ster‐

ling City. Having four seniors graduate and no juniors, plus the fact the juniors returning in 2012

would have their third coach; few people outside Grandfalls gave them much of a chance in 2012 to

repeat their success. However, the Cowboys had three all‐state players returning and sophomore

Julian Helms an all‐state player moved into the district. Looking at the schedule prior to the season

felt the Cowboys would be lucky to go 5‐5 for the season; anyone who said they would have a 13‐1

season would have been laughed out of town. With development of a new found defense that pro‐

vided seven shutouts and allowing 23 points in the other three games there were visions of a deep

playoff run.

The Cowboys fielded 13 players in 2012 six juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen.

Junior Marquez (Jr) who was named offensive MVP of the year for the district and Division II Region II

was the leading rusher for the Cowboys this season. Junior was second team All‐state in 2011. Thom‐

as Burns (Jr) was named the MVP of the year on defense in district and for Division II Region II he led

the Cowboys in tackles. Burns was second team All‐state last

year. Gilbert Nunez (Jr) was named first team running back in

district 6 and special teams player first team All‐region. Gil‐

bert has been named to the All‐State team special team’s

player as a freshman and sophomore. Julian Helms (So) was

named first team All‐district and All‐region on both offense

and defense. He was named to the All‐state team in 2011.

Isaac Olivas (So) was named as All‐district and All‐region kick‐

er he was also named 1st team All‐district and 2nd team All‐

region nose guard.

Dus n Burns (Jr) was named first team defensive

lineman on both All‐district and All‐region teams. Dus n was

joined on both teams by Luis Canals (Jr) who led the Cowboys

in intercep ons for the year. Luis and Julian Helms each had

12 intercep ons. The Cowboys had two other players make

second team all district Aus n Perryman (So) made second

team on both offense and defense he also received honorable

men on All‐region. Aus n Arriola (Jr.) was named second

team All‐district as a ght end.

There is reason to look forward to the 2013 season

for the Cowboys. This should be the first me while in high

school the seniors will have the same coaching staff. Coach

Joe Helms, Juan Rios and Isaiah Archer were named the All‐

region coach of the year.
