FROM THE EDITOR’S DESKCompliments of the season. Another year is upon us and it is our hope that 2013 shall represent another step in the right direction for Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo and Zimbabwe’s arts in general. We have already started running around, planning for the 9th edition of the festival. The dates are set. The theme is already in place. The vision is to have a bigger and better edition; bigger in terms of days, events, noise about the festival, the shows themselves and the crowds that are going to be part and parcel of the six days event. And better in terms of planning and execution.

Obviously a new year brings with it new things, new expectations. The festival is adding new events and new projects to its program. We are introducing our friends of Intwasa project, a world music concert similar to the now popular Spring Jazz Night, a family gospel concert, and a visual arts exhibition for schools. We are also bringing back the comedy night as a way of acknowledging the growth of stand- up comedy in Zimbabwe. This is all in an eort make the festival bigger, better and more diverse.

The festival promises regular updates as we move towards September and the 9th edition of Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo.

THE FESTIVAL THEME

The 9th edition of Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo shall embrace and celebrate the dierent cultures and forms of expressions found in Zimbabwe, Africa and the world at large. With the theme Cultural Diversity: The Common Heritage of Humanity the festival shall celebrate unity in diversity; diversity in terms of art genres, approaches, issues, and audiences. The festival shall be a platform for dierent voices; a mirror of plurality and cultural democracy as embedded in the UNESCO 2005 Convention for the promotion and protection of the diversity of cultural expressions.

Being aware that cultural diversity is strengthened by the free ow of ideas, and that it is nurtured by constant exchanges and interactions between cultures, the 9th edition shall, in the words of Jacques Martial try to “have black people and white people and yellow people and brown people and green people in the same theatres, in the same exhibition halls and in the same experimental gardens. Have experts, amateurs and novices in the same venues.” celebrating their dierent talents and voices.

The festival shall strive to PROVOKE CURIOSITY among artists and festival goers while encouraging the public to engage with the art and the artists. It will be a platform to promote the views, thoughts, insights, opinions and values of many. Artists shall be challenged to OBSERVE, REFLECT, ANTICIPATE and INTERFACE with diversity.

It is hoped that the festival shall tap into the vast cultural and creative life of the region, the rest of Africa and the world so as to bring tangible cultural improvements in the life of Zimbabweans and other global citizens that shall ock to the festival in September.

“The Common Heritage of Humanity the festival shall celebrate unity in diversity”

“The festival shall be a platform for dierent voices; a mirror of plurality and cultural democracy”

THE FRIENDS OF INTWASA

Since inception INTWASA has heavily relied on corporate and foundations for its programmes. Unfortunately, budget cuts and late conrmation of funds by foundations and donors has had a negative impact on the ambitions of the festival, particularly on long term planning. The membership programme dubbed Friends of Intwasa, whose main objective is to raise a strong support base of individuals and corporate organisations, comes as a result of the need to create alternative funding sources for the festival and other INTWASA programmes.

The Friends of Intwasa shall pay an annual subscription or membership fee that will be pooled together as part of a fundraising strategy for the organisation. The membership of friends shall be structured in a way that gives an opportunity for people to choose the level they can aord. INTWASA will use the membership program to develop the bigger family picture that will support the programmes of the organisation.

There are four types of membership.

1. Students is @ $52. Bronze is @ $103. Silver is @ $504. Gold is @ $100

THE BENEFITS DIFFER PER MEMBERSHIP. PLEASE CONTACT THE OFFICE FOR MORE DETAILS.
