FTC is a mid-level robotics competition focused on providing an opportunity for 7th - 12th grade students to experience the power, excitement, and fun of STEM subjects and gain insights in the possibility of a technical career. Team members get involved in the design, implementation, and programming of a robot. Hood River Valley High School will be hosting the event Saturday February 16th. They are still in need of volunteers to make this happen! This will be a fun event and a great introduction to youth robotics if you have not had a chance to get involved yet. FTC Robotics: February 16th in Hood River

GTA Vice President Brad Schrick will be discussing publishingbooks for Apple's iBookstore. This is a simple process from oneperspective: you sign up for an account, construct your book in asemi-standard ePub format, use Apple's tools to proof the book,and then upload it. However, there can be many twists and turnsalong the way. This talk will focus on creating a fixed formatchildren's book. If we have time, we will also cover read-aloudbooks, and take a peek at iBooks Author.

Featured Event: OSU+CGCC Discussion on STEM HigherEducation Opportunities in the GorgeTuesday, February 26th

Dani Annala (Hood River County OpenCampus Coordinator), Lynette Black(Wasco County Open Campus Coordinator),and Kevin McCabe (CGCC) will be joining usto discuss several educational initiativeslooking to further support science,technology, engineering and math (STEM)opportunities in the Gorge. OSU isworking on establishing an Open Campus inour region to further develop their resourcesavailable in our community, especially thosewith a STEM focus. CGCC is looking tocreate a two-year engineering certificationthat will support GTA businesses at manylevels.

Our three presenters are looking to engagein a conversation with GTA members and others from thecommunity about this process, the needs in our region, andbusiness workforce requirements to ensure that their effortsprepare our residents for jobs available here. The Featured Event will be held at White Buffalo (4040 WestcliffDrive, Hood River, OR 97031)starting at 6:30. It is free to attendfor members including all employees at member companies, $10for non-members, with no host bar. Appetizers provided.

9Mile Labs, a Seattle B2B Accelerator, Opens its Applications to Oregon Entrepreneurs

9Mile Labs, a Seattle high-tech accelerator focused on B2B software and cloud technologies is nowaccepting applications for its program starting April 2013. 9Mile Labs runs two 3-month programsevery year, each with a group of 9 startups. During this 3-month period, 9Mile Labs will invest $20k ineach of the companies joining the program in exchange for 4-8% equity. Startups receive access to awide network of mentors and advisors from a cross section of the high-tech world who have extensivestartup, technology, business, and functional experience. Startups also get great perks such as freeworkspace, internet access, and hosting. Oregon Technology Business Center's "Start a Company Workshop Series." In a seriesof 4 workshops, OTBC will work through a number of critical issues, ranging from understandingand validating the assumptions underlying your business model to building a realistic fundingstrategy.
