STAGES Performing Arts Youth Academy presents “Cheaper by the Dozen” at HART in downtown Hill-sboro. “Cheaper by the Dozen” is the tale of the Gilbreth family during the 1920s. Patriarch Frank Gilbreth Sr. and wife Lillian, efficiency and motion experts of the time, used their large brood to test their time-saving ideas, often with comical results. Join the adventures of this close-knit family, as grown-up Frank Jr. and Ernestine fondly recall how their father inspired their strong work ethic, while also try-ing to keep the roaring twenties from creating uproar in his methodically managed household. The production, directed by William Crawford, is based on the

original book Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey. Come out and enjoy perfor-mances by a dozen, and then some, young actors, Parker the pup as the family dog, and Donald Cleland and Beth Self as Frank Sr. and Lillian. The show runs the first three weekends in January with evening performances Friday and Saturday; January 4th, 5th, 11th, 12th, 18th and 19th at 8:00 p.m, and Sunday matinees; January 6th, 13th, and 20th at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase at the HART Theatre box office, or via stagesyouth.org; $10 for students and seniors, and $12 for adults. - Tamara Ellingston

The Scholls Valley Lodge - a 48-acre country estate and setting for exclusive weddings and events in Washington County - was originally a rustic barn on a bluff in the Tualatin River basin when Rich and Paula Vial bought the property in 1984. Several years, children, and remodels later, the Vial’s expansive 8,500 square-foot home is now steeped in mod-ern luxury and accented with artistic detail, capturing the essence of Northwest country style. The lodge features seven bedrooms each with its own character, style, and antique roll-top desk. Eight bathrooms throughout the living quarters boast skylights, walk-in showers, and jacuzzi spas. Downstairs amenities include a library, billiards and family room, covered deck, deluxe commercial kitchen, and large, flexible meeting and dining room. On the grounds of the estate, there is a vineyard, orchard, swimming pool, grassy lawn, wheat field, pasture, stand of trees, and nearby creek. Views from the lodge include Mount St. Helens, Mount Hood, the Tualatin River, rolling flats, and wooded hills. There’s also a chance to see wildflowers, birds, and animals. Guests of the Vial family can stop by the lodge for a romantic bed and breakfast getaway or reserve the lodge for a weekend wedding destination or day-use reception. Other guests have come to the lodge to host family reunions, cor-porate events, and private parties. The Vials have opened up their home to private engagements since 2009.

The Food Film Festival continues at the Dairy Creek Food Web this month with the screening of the docu-mentary ‘Coming to Ground’ on January 17. The 90-minute film examines how agriculture in Kentucky has changed in the last ten years since the decline of tobacco as a major cash crop. A free screening will be held at 7:30 p.m. January 17 at the Forest Grove Grange at 1917 B Street.

Food Film Festival

It’s music inspired by the rustic life of two homesteaders who lived in the woods near Keasey just outside of Vernonia during the 1970s. John and Kim Cun-nick’s cabin had no electricity or running water. John worked at a nearby sawmill and the pair wrote tunes about their experiences there, enough to fill a song-

book. The songs capture the es-sence of rural life in Northwest Oregon. Those songs are once again being performed by a trio of musicians from the Portland area, calling themselves The Timberbound Project. You can hear the trio perform this month at 9 p.m. on January 11 at the Rock Creek Tavern. Ti

Lace and LeadThe country music scene in Oregon may not get as much attention as the indie and neo-folk rock bandwagons, but local musician Matt Hundley says that Oregon’s country music scene is actually strong and vibrant. Hundley - who got his start as a boy playing the fiddle at rural churches in the area of Gales Creek west of Forest Grove - recently formed the country duo ‘Lace and Lead’ with Eugene-native Emily Tanke. In just a few months, Hundley and Tanke have written a handful of original songs, played shows around the Willamette Valley, and started to record some tracks. The duo will bring their brand of country ballads and harmonies to the Westside this month when they play at 9 p.m. on January 18 at Ballad Town Billiards in Forest Grove.Like Hundley, Tanke also got her start making music in church. She sat alongside her father on the piano bench and sang while he played. She went on to sing in competitions and perform at sporting events. Both Hundley and Tanke are studying music business at Portland State University, but they actually met online.

Also this month, they will travel down to the Matthew Knight Arena to sing the National An-them at a UO basketball game and perform at the Oregon Convention Center, trying out for spots on the 2013 Oregon fair circuit. www.laceandleadband.com

It’s goat cheese like you’ve never had before - fresh from a farm in the Gaston foothills. Quail Run Creamery’s spreadable ‘Little Goat Chèvre’ is made from the milk of Nigerian Dwarf Goats - a special breed that produces a sweet, rich milk high in butterfat. Raised on Scott and Summer Catino’s family farm, the goats graze hillside pastures which boast views of the Coast Range. In addition to the chèvre, the Catinos make three other cheeses at Quail Run Creamery including feta, mizithra, and mozzarella varieties. These cheeses can be purchased at select retail outlets as well as on the farm, and can be found on the menu at a handful of lo-cal restaurants like 1910: An American Bistro in Forest Grove and The Horse Radish in Carlton. While you can enjoy Quail Run Creamery cheese in your home or at the restaurant, you can also take a cheese making class down on the farm. During the classes you can tour the farm, sample Quail Run cheeses, taste goat milk ice cream, and learn about food pairing.

In case you missed it, Wine Specta-tor, a leading publication in the wine industry, reaching 2.5 million readers around the world, recently published a 15 page spread on Ore-gon Pinot Noir. Most notably, Wine Spectator names Oregon Pinot Noir quality second only to that found in France. This latest accolade is quite a claim considering Oregon has only been producing wine commer-cially since the 1960’s, compared to France’s history which can be traced to the 6th century BC. Oregon produces less than 1% of all wine in the world. France’s production is the second largest in the world. Oregon wine production is primarily Pinot Noir found in the Willamette Valley, including those being produced in the North Willa-mette Valley of Washington County. The Northern regional appellations include, Dundee Hills, Ribbon Ridge, Yamhill-Carlton District and

Chehalem Mountains. This type of press will most certainly create a higher demand for Oregon wine experiences, bringing in tourists from all over the world. Wineries are opening tasting rooms, new restaurants, luxury accommoda-tions and related activities are soon to follow. Winter in Washington County finds most of the tasting rooms with limited hours and the roads a bit icy to navigate so call the winery before you go. It is however, the perfect time to read about wine, taste and shop locally and work on a plan for your next Oregon wine tour adventure. Luckily, you won’t need to travel further than right inside Washington County to taste some of these highest quality Pinot Noirs. Some other notable Washington County wines to taste now include:• Kramer Vineyards Celebrate Semi Sparkling Muller Thurgau and Semi

Sparkling Pinot Gris. Taste these side by side for the ultimate experi-ence. Retail $20• Freja Cellars, 2007 Reserve Wil-lamette Valley Pinot Noir. All estate grown fruit, rounded tannins and an earthy forest floor bouquet, will age well for another five years. Hints of blueberry, cherry jam and sandlewood spice on the palate. Retail $20• Oak Knoll Frambrosia, with a reliable source of excellent Oregon red raspberries, and thirty years of winemaking experience, this wine has consistently ranked as one of the highest rated “dessert style” wines in North America. Retail $12

Being Well, Being Mindful, Being at

Home in this Body“I feel at home in my body for the first time in my life” said Melinda. We hear comments like this from patients and students who learn to listen to the messages their body gives them as they begin a practice of physical movement with a mindful attitude. Rather than the “workouts” they may have tried peri-odically over the years these folks are now working with a more inward focus. They are paying better attention to the experience of being alive as they walk, run, or exercise. This cultivates an attitude of acceptance as they learn the lessons taught by body sensations: the physical experi-ences of breath, stretching, fatigue, strength, soreness, even the thoughts that evoke tension. Rather than an ambition to achieve the correct number of “reps,” they turn their at-tention to the physical, mental and emotional experiences of the moment. Rather than watching the video screen as they exercise they turn toward their experience of life right now, this life. Over time they grow to know much more about them-selves than they had thought possible. One young man who was learning to stay calm wrote that he realized after this inward way of practicing “my body knows more about what is going on than I do” and he was much more able to stay calm. Many folks find that this allows them to learn to move beyond physical limitations they thought were per-manent. Ironically this comes not as a result of “pushing” but of letting go and just letting things unfold in the present moment.
