Presidents Report I hope everyone had a good Christmas, and that you are off to a good new year. The open house at Ann and Rogers’ was most enjoyable, as always.

Keith, Susan, Linda, Kevin, and Leslie bench racing and enjoying the food at Ann & Rogers.

January brings Ice Racing, and the Cars on Ice race schedule has been posted. There was a time when META was well represented at these events, and it would be nice if we were again seen as participants again, I do however recognize the time commitments we all have. I am proud to say that META is always well represented at the Variety Club Telethon. The Telethon Driver's and Operators meeting is on January 8, 2012, 11:00 am at the Variety Office. If you plan on being a volunteer driver this year you should plan on attending this event or contact Cathy Vogel to let her know when you would prefer your driving shift to be and get other necessary information. The Telethon is February 11 & 12 this year. The META Awards Banquet is on January 28 and tickets are for sale on line or send a cheque by mail (remember to include contact information). Please note that there is a small surcharge added to payments made by PayPal this year to cover the transaction charges. I hope to see all the META members in the lower mainland attend this event. We need to sell 50 tickets to break even, and the club can not afford a deficit this year. All tickets need to be paid for in advance. The theme for this year’s banquet is the Indy 500, so brush up on your knowledge and I hope you have been doing reading around the subjects covered by my questions over the past year.

March 9, 2012, 8:00 pm (be at the bowling alley around 7:00 pm) is the tentative date for Bowling for Big

Brothers. I have booked two lanes this year (10 people) and I strongly recommend you join the team on-line. This date is a media event, so is good publicity for our club. Our team already has significant donations collected on-line and I hope to better our last year’s fund raising total, please contact me ([email protected] or 604-716-2660) if you want information or wish to join the bowling team (please note I usually work graveyard shift so you may need to leave a message if you contact me by phone). There is one possible conflict with our tentative bowling date, that being the Roll-X 16 hour enduro in Seattle at Pacific Raceways. I think I may already have a $500 car (assuming I can get the rust bucket Jaguar Denis Neyedli told me about) to enter in this with a few other crazy guys. If there is going to be representation from other META members at the Roll-X, I will reschedule the bowling, however if it is just me I will work around the date (I can drive down to Pacific Raceway in the wee hours of Saturday Morning). SCCBC should have the 2012 race schedule by the January SCCBC meeting, so I will keep you posted. The VRCBC is already working on plans for this year’s BCHMR, but unfortunately some cutbacks will be required due to the losses from last year. Like META the VRC is a club with limited resources so cannot afford to lose money on events. I would hope our membership gives the BCHMR the same support it has given in the past. At this point, I’m sad to say, the CCGP weekend may not happen this year. Question of the month: This month I again have a two part question.

Q: Why was Greg Moore’s car number 99? In honour of Greg Moore’s other sport I’m going to ask a hockey question this month: What retired NHL hockey player was on Greg Moore’s peewee hockey team?

Answers must be sent to [email protected], please put “Mayday Answer” in the subject line - All parts of the question(s) must be answered, and a prize goes to the first correct answer. Don’t assume someone has given me a correct answer, it is always interesting to read replies from club members, sometimes I learn something. Answer to last month’s question: A: The youngest driver to win the Indianapolis 500 was Troy Ruttman, he was 22 years, 80 days old when

he won the 36th Indianapolis 500 on May 30, 1952. Greg Moore was the youngest driver to win a CART-sanctioned event when at age 18 he won the 1994 Indy Lights season-opener at Phoenix.

Ken Murray (a META member from Alberta) gave me the first correct answer, so receives a prize from http://greenflagimports.ca. Barb Moewes was a close second this month with her correct answer coming in just after Ken’s answer was forwarded to me by our editor. It was good to see new blood fighting it out for first to answer, thanks to all who take the time to participate. Please remember I deal with over 100 emails a day and use email accounts to do a preliminary filter and sort of incoming email. Do not hit reply to the email address your Mayday comes from - I go by time stamp of when it arrives in the correct email account and if our editor doesn’t check the Mayday email for a few days it could cost you the prize.

Mike

Editors Note: I guess Ken owes me a beer for forwarding his answer in time to win the big prize!!!!!! Sorry Barb.

New events highlight 2012 schedule By indycar.com staff 22 Dec 2011

A first-ever event in China and two venues that return after multi-year absences highlight the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule for 2012 announced today. The 2012 season, which will feature the return of engine manufacturer competition and a new universal chassis produced by Dallara Automobili, kicks off Sunday, March 25, with the eighth Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The IZOD IndyCar Series again presents the most diverse schedule in motorsports with the challenges of races on temporary street circuits, permanent road courses, superspeedways and short ovals in four countries. “To be crowned IZOD IndyCar Series champion, the driver must be able to master a diversified race schedule that truly challenges the best in the world,” INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard said. “The 2012 schedule offers our drivers and teams the test of conquering both ovals and road and street races. Adding to the diversity of the season, we’re excited with the launch of three engine manufacturers vying for the Manufacturers Trophy.” The scenic Belle Isle park circuit will be the site of the recently announced Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix on Sunday, June 3. The IZOD IndyCar Series had competed at the Raceway at Belle Isle in 2007 and ’08. Also returning to the schedule is the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval in Fontana, Calif., for a race under the lights Saturday, Sept. 15. INDYCAR sanctioned four races at Auto Club Speedway between 2002 and ’05, while CART hosted events at the track from 1997 to 2002. Night races also will be held at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday, June 9, and the .875-mile Iowa Speedway on Saturday, June 23. The IZOD IndyCar Series returns to the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval for the 16th consecutive year. The 2012 race will return to its traditional 228-lap format after experimentation of two 114-lap races on the same evening in 2011. The Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday, May 27, with Pole Day on Saturday, May 19. The IZOD IndyCar Series returns to Barber Motorsports Park for the third consecutive year on Sunday, April 1, and the 38th Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach will be held Sunday, April 15. Also, the series will compete on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the third time on Sunday, April 29, as the lead-in to Indianapolis 500 activities. Back-to-back races in Canada highlight July – on the streets of Exhibition Place in Toronto on Sunday, July 8, and on the exciting City Centre Airport circuit in Edmonton, Alberta, on Sunday, July 22. The permanent road courses of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Sunday, Aug. 5) and Infineon Raceway (Sunday, Aug. 26) also retain their traditional dates. INDYCAR will sanction a race in China for the first time Sunday, Aug. 19, on a 3.87-mile street circuit in Qingdao. On Sunday, Sept. 2, the IZOD IndyCar Series will electrify the streets of downtown Baltimore for the second consecutive year. “INDYCAR is excited about the confirmed races announced today,” Bernard sad. “With the new car and engine manufacturer competition, we believe they will be tremendous events that will help INDYCAR grow. “We are exploring adding additional events to the 2012 schedule. We’re in the process of confirming a 16th event, while also considering adding a 17th race to the calendar.” In addition to the race schedule, the series’ annual preseason Open Test will be held at Sebring International Raceway on March 5-8. The television lineup and event start times will be announced soon.

City officials seek new group to run Grand Prix Contract with troubled Baltimore Racing Development is terminated By Julie Scharper, The Baltimore Sun 8:02 p.m. EST, December 30, 2011 City officials have terminated the contract of the troubled company that organized the inaugural Baltimore Grand Prix and are seeking a new group to run the racing festival in the coming year, the mayor's office announced Friday. The city ended Baltimore Racing Development's five-year contract after the company failed to meet the terms of the agreement, officials said. The racing group owes the city more than $1.5 million in taxes and fees — a fraction of the company's $12 million in debts. "BRD hasn't come up with a plan to demonstrate that they have the capacity to have a successful event next year," said Kaliope Parthemos, the deputy mayor for economic development. "They haven't come up with a plan to reorganize. They haven't come up with a plan to pay their debts." Parthemos said city officials hope to find another group to organize the three-day festival. IndyCar officials have included the race, slated for Labor Day weekend, on their 2012 schedule. About 110,000 tickets were sold for this year's event, and a report commissioned by the city found that the race generated $47 million in economic impact through hotel stays, restaurant meals and other purchases by racegoers. "This event had a great economic impact on the city, and it was an event the citizens of Baltimore were excited about," Parthemos said. "It should continue." Racing analysts say about two months remain for the city to pull together plans for a September race. The new team must sell tickets, seek sponsors, purchase goods and services — and create a new image for the event after BRD's financial missteps. The city's decision comes as the racing group's managers, after much wrangling, signed off on a deal that would award control of the company to Felix J. Dawson, a former Constellation Energy executive, according to sources close to the racing group. But city officials said the change in leadership was too little, too late. The racing group has been the target of at least a half-dozen lawsuits filed by investors and vendors demanding payment. The state comptroller's office has placed liens against the homes of the group's five managers and two executives in an effort to collect back taxes. Neither Baltimore Racing Development officials nor Dawson returned calls seeking comment Friday. It is unclear whether the racing group will declare bankruptcy and whether it will be able to pay vendors, the state and city. Parthemos issued an ultimatum to the group nearly two months ago, demanding new leadership and a plan to pay the debts to the city by Dec. 31. The company owes about $488,000 in taxes to the city, a $250,000 racing fee and $750,000 to pay fire, police and other municipal employees who worked at the race, among other fees, Parthemos said. She said officials were determining how to collect the funds and were considering asking the new racing group to repay the debts over time. Parthemos said officials have been approached by "two or three" groups that are interested in organizing the event and have the money and background to plan a major race. She stressed that the city is interested only in hearing from parties qualified to organize such an event. "The circle of people who have the expertise and experience is very small, and we will only be having discussions with that group of people," Parthemos said. Sources close to the discussions say one of those groups is headed by Dale Dillon, an Indiana-based construction company owner who became BRD's general manager weeks before the race.

Page 8: January 2012 Next META meeting will be JANUARY ...meta.bc.ca/newsletters/2012/mayday_12_jan.pdfFeb 18&19 Ice Race # 4 -- Barnes Lake WCIRABC Ashcroft, BC Feb 22 META Meeting – Boston

City officials credit Dillon, who has helped organize IndyCar races in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Toronto and is seeking to run one in Fort Lauderdale, with pulling together Baltimore's event. Dillon would have continued to manage the race under a proposal put forth by Dawson, the former Constellation Energy executive who had hoped to take over BRD. Dillon declined to comment when reached by phone Friday. Parthemos said the city would be able to avoid the time-consuming process of seeking bidders because the contract is for a "professional service," but said any agreement would need the approval of the city's five-member Board of Estimates. Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake has been a strong proponent of the race, which was run about a week before the mayoral primary. The city paid nearly $7 million to prepare roads around the Inner Harbor for the race, during which cars hurtled along a two-mile course at speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. In a statement, the mayor expressed regret that Baltimore Racing Development had been unable to fulfill its contract, but cited the benefits of continuing the race. "The Grand Prix generated $47 million in economic impact and proved valuable in terms of positive media exposure and civic pride for Baltimore's residents. The event, if conducted responsibly, has significant economic value to potential investors and the city this year and in future years," she said. A new group would need the approval of both the city and IndyCar to proceed. IndyCar executives were not available for comment Friday. Baltimore Racing Development was beset by financial difficulties long before the race. The leadership team failed to secure a title sponsor to contribute more than $1 million dollars in exchange for naming rights. The group missed payments to the Maryland Stadium Authority for a $2 million project to turn a Camden Yards parking lot into a pit lane last year and later fulfilled a payment plan only after an unprecedented 11th-hour loan from a state agency. The racing group took out a high-interest $1.1 million loan in July from an investor with ties to one of the group's five managers. Former executives and city officials have complained that the group's leadership structure was unwieldy and the managers were often at odds. Most recently, the group has failed to pay several vendors, including companies that installed fences and grandstands. The news was disheartening for the management of Sunrise Safety Services in Glen Burnie, which did sign work, set up barriers and performed roadwork for the race. "If the city can't get their money, what would make us think that we can get ours?" said Janet Groncki, the company's president. "We're not thinking we're going to get it either." Groncki said Baltimore Racing Development owes her company about $220,000. Sunrise Safety Services, which employs more than 70 people, plans to file a lawsuit Tuesday against the Grand Prix organizers. Employee bonuses were limited at the end of the year because of BRD's failure to pay, Groncki said. "We're going to file just to be on the record," she said. "That's a lot of money to us. We're a small business." John W. "Bill" Bunting's Upper Marlboro grandstand company, B&K Rentals, was awarded $284,000 in a Prince George's County court last week because of Baltimore Racing Development's failure to pay for services. Bunting said he doesn't know whether his company will ever see that money but that he would consider working on a Baltimore IndyCar race next year if a new group takes over. "Baltimore was a great venue," Bunting said. "The race definitely has a future." He lamented the "lack of financial planning" by this year's organizers. "It's a shame to see it go that way," he said. Baltimore Sun reporter Steve Kilar contributed to this article.

Grandpa's Old Ford Garage

The Automotive Art of Dean Weller 33015 W. 83rd Street DeSoto, Kansas 66018

Not open to the public - drive by and look in the windows

While touring DeSoto, Kansas, three years ago, I stumbled across an interesting old building with some wonderful old Ford signs. "Grandpa's Garage & Body Shop" was painted on the window. I stopped at the garage to photograph the building, then peeked in the windows and discovered that the garage was filled with rows of beautiful old cars. While peering through the windows and trying to take some photos through the glass, a nice lady came up to me and invited me to go into the garage with her. She is Delores Weller, and she introduced me to

the man responsible for this surprising collection, her husband of 64 years, Dean Weller. They started showing me the beautiful antique cars crowded into the 1918 Model A Ford garage, and I was stunned to learn that Dean hadn't just restored the cars. In large part he created them. Yes, a few of the vehicles have "just" been lovingly preserved by Dean Weller, but others have been significantly modified, and some were nearly made from scratch. Two of the three old Cadillacs were purchased new by the Wellers. Dean retired 31 years ago and he has been creating nearly a vehicle a year, including some of the most beautiful cars that I have ever seen. Though he creating these vehicles just for himself, Dean Weller is truly a Kansas Grassroots Artist. He briefly showed be around the ground floor where I saw nearly 20 vehicles (there are more in the basement), plus his crowded work area in the back where he is currently working on the body for his next project He has even built his own paint booth. The "drawing board" next to Dean's current project shows some of his drawings and research. He has books containing the sketches, photos and designs for his previous projects. Dean meticulously sketches each part as he disassembles, repairs, modifies and reassembles the engines and other components. His sketches look like draftsmen's drawings. A skill that he probably acquired during his career as a home building. You will notice that no phone number is listed here for Dean Weller's Garage (studio). He loves to work on the vehicles more than being interrupted by visitors. He does try to accommodate automobile enthusiast clubs that contact him about tours, but does not wish to schedule appointments for more visitors. So drive by to look at Dean Weller's lovely old Ford garage, and look in the front windows at this automotive art. Maybe you will get lucky and Dean or Delores will invite you in.

The yellow 1929 boat tail sportster in front started as a Model A Ford. The front is still close to the original, but the long boat tail is the modified hood from a 1947 Chevy truck.

This replica 1912 Mercer Raceabout is Dean's most recent work. It was built on the frame and drive train of a 1930 Pontiac. Except for the lights, he made everything you see. He even fabricated the brass radiator housing based on photos of the original Mercer racers

Dash and controls for the 1912 Mercer. Weller adapted the brass gauge housings from oxyacetylene welding tanks, and the brass in the steering wheel column was originally a stair rail. Only 20 original vehicles are in still existence and they bring over one million dollars at auction.

Grandpa's Old Ford Garage

Updated visit to Dean Weller's garage

in March 2010

Dean Weller's Old Ford Garage in March 2010. There are more vehicles stored in the basement. In the past year, Dean Weller's Grandpa's Old

Ford Garage has become the most visited page on Kansastravel.org, and on March 2, I returned to DeSoto, Kansas to catch up with Dean and learn what new projects he has completed. Dean is modest about his accomplishments. He is not seeking celebrity, and although he is warm and courteous with visitors, he finds visitors a distraction that take him away from his auto restoration hobby. Dean likes to start a project at the beginning of each year and usually finishes before the hot weather of summer. He had a bit later start on the Ford Sportster he is restoring this year and apologized that it will probably take well into summer to complete this year's project. I feel blessed to have met Dean Weller and have this opportunity to preserve a record of his amazing automotive art. I plan to return and photograph the competed Ford Sportster latter in the year. Happy Holidays.....

As we prepare to depart the year 2011 and progress into the critical year 2012, I want to thank all of you for your

educational e-mails over the past year. I am totally screwed up now and have little chance of recovery.

I no longer open a bathroom door without using a paper towel, or have the waitress put lemon slices in my ice water

without worrying about the bacteria on the lemon peel.

I have trouble shaking hands with someone who has been driving because the number one pastime while driving

alone is picking ones nose.

I MUST SEND MY SPECIAL THANKS to whoever sent me the one about rat poop in the glue on envelopes because

I now have to use a wet sponge with every envelope that needs sealing.

ALSO, now I have to scrub the top of every can I open for the same reason.

I no longer worry about my soul because I have 363,214 angels looking out for me, and St Theresa's Novena has

granted my every wish.

I can't have a drink in a bar because I'll wake up in a bathtub full of ice with my kidneys gone.

I can't eat at KFC because their chickens are actually horrible mutant freaks with no eyes, feet or feathers.

I can't use cancer-causing deodorants even though I smell like a water buffalo on a hot day.

THANKS TO YOU I have learned that my prayers only get answered if I forward an e-mail to seven of my friends

and make a wish within five minutes.

I no longer buy gas without taking someone along to watch the car so a serial killer doesn't crawl in my back seat

when I'm filling up.

I no longer use Cling Wrap in the microwave because it causes seven different types of cancer.

AND THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW I can't boil a cup of water in the microwave anymore because it will blow

up in my face. Disfiguring me for life.

I no longer go to the movies because I could be pricked with a needle infected with AIDS when I sit down.

I no longer go to shopping malls because someone will drug me with a perfume sample and rob me.

I no longer receive packages from UPS or Fed Ex since they are actually Al Qaeda agents in disguise.

I no longer answer the phone because someone will ask me to dial a number for which I will get a phone bill with

calls to Jamaica , Uganda , Singapore , and Uzbekistan .

I no longer buy cookies from Neiman-Marcus since I now have their recipe.

THANKS TO YOU I can't use anyone's toilet but mine because a big black snake could be lurking under the seat

and cause me instant death when it bites my butt.

AND THANKS TO YOUR GREAT ADVICE I can't ever pick up a .25 cent coin dropped in the parking lot because it

probably was placed there by a sex molester waiting to grab me as I bend over.

I can't do any gardening because I'm afraid I'll get bitten by the Violin Spider and my hand will fall off.

P. S. I now keep my toothbrush in the living room, because I was told by e-mail that water splashes over 6 ft. out

of the toilet.
