footprintThe Honor of Dance At this year’s Clogging Champions of America competition organization’s Showdown of Champions, the group recognized a group of exceptional dancers who represent the best and brightest by inducting them into the annual All Pro team. Also chosen by the board of directors was an All Pro Director to symbolically lead this group of fine dancers and to represent good team leadership and the spirit of clogging competition. This year’s All Pro director is Jamie Conyers Vincent, director of the Taps in Motion teams of Eastern Kentucky. Jamie received a standing ovation from her peers as she came to the stage to receive the honor, and many of her parents commented on the choice later that it meant so much considering the amount of giving back and support for the community and her work with special needs dancers that Jamie does with no fanfare. Jamie teaches a group of dancers with special needs and the group has had the opportunity to perform at competitions. The sheer joy of these dancers in performing touches audiences in a very special way. It reminds me very much of seeing a child who responds to music with total and completely unapologetic abandon, or a group of senior citizens who tap their feet and sway along to music with a gentle smile that speaks to fond memories of a life of experience and savoring the joys of life. You see, it is not the skill of a dancer that brings us such an emotional response. It is the ability of a person to reach into our hearts and touch the dancer within us that makes us well up in solidarity. As we begin another year, I hope we find many opportunities to take that joy of dance and share it with others, and in turn be touched by the great power of dance ourselves. Congratulations to Jamie and the dancers who were honored with inclusion in the CCA All Pro team, and to all of the dancers who inspire us with their talent and love for clogging.Happy clogging! advantage of being young and when you’re young everybody thinks you’re great,” she said. The Doubletoe Times magazine of clogging met up with Cherryholmes as they prepared to perform on the stage of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. In a small dressing room of the historic Ryman Auditorium, we talked about music, percussive dance and Cherryholmes life on the road.
DTT: I am here with Cherryholmes, the bluegrass family band extraordinaire… How would you describe the Cherryholmes sound?
Sandy Cherryholmes: Jerry says “bluegrass on steroids.” We like to think of it as a mix of bluegrass-flavored jazz and acoustic.
B.J. Cherryholmes: …Americana.
DTT: Everyone introduce yourself to our readers and tell us your role in the band.Cia Cherryholmes: I’m Cia and I am the oldest of the four siblings who play in the band. I play the banjo. I play the three finger style, as opposed to the clawhammer. I’ve been playing more than eight years.
B.J.: I am B.J. and I used to be the original first violin player for the group but I have since been demoted to second violin player as my younger sister Molly has taken on more of the fiddle and violin work and – in the future – more cello and stuff. (others laugh) But I have been given other hats to wear and I get to play a lot of instruments. I play mandolin and mandola, and now I am working on the hound dog. That’s a resonator slide round-neck guitar. I’ve been playing about ten years and I am 21 years old.
Skip Cherryholmes: Hi. My name’s Skip and I play the guitar. I’ve been playing for about eight years. That has pretty much been my role for a while now. I’m twenty.
Molly Cherryholmes: I’m Molly and I play the violin and a few other instruments but I wouldn’t say that I really play them. I do fool around on them, though.
B.J.: Fiddle around... (all laugh) no pun intended.
DTT: Step dancing has become a signature part (Continued on Page 20)

Denton, North Carolina native and resident Elliott Skeen, who has been clogging for over 40 years, was honored with induction into America’s Clogging Hall of Fame at their annual dance-off at Maggie Valley’s historic “Stompin’ Ground” this past year.
However, this skilled dancer began clogging completely by accident.
“The first time I ever danced in front of people was at the Russell Frye’s Wagon Train,” Skeen says. This event, held on Friday and Saturday nights, consisted of live bands and people who loved to dance. His dancing career took off after that.
As a young boy, Skeen danced on teams such as The Davidson County Cloggers and The Denton Cloggers. His unique style of dance came from observing the best of the best. He traveled to the mountains and to local dance competitions,
barn dances and fiddlers’ conventions, and picked up on the various styles of clog dancing. He studied different styles of dance from people like Glenn Nance, a well-known buck dancer.
In the sixth grade, Skeen started a clogging team named The Dixie Cloggers with dance partner Tammy Swarringen. In 1985, he began his own clogging team — The Hickory Flat Hoedowners. These dancers were from the Piedmont. The Hickory Flat Hoedowners began traveling, competing and winning in every category they danced. They traveled all over the East Coast and even danced at the nation’s Capitol building. “I went around and handpicked top-notch dancers from the Triad area,” Skeen says. They dominated the competition from the year the team began in 1985 until they decided to stop around 2000 or 2001. “We won at least two or three national titles every year, and sometimes (Continued on page 10)

Elliott was joined by his wife and daughter for the ceremony. He joins a very select group of clogging pioneers who have received this honor.

Changing Channels It’s a guy thing. I can’t leave a television remote alone. Every time a commercial comes on I feverishly grab the remote and scan the band as if I were alergic to any type of commerce. When my eye catches some new program I get so distracted that I forget what I was watching in the first place until the next commercial break in the new show when I surf back to the first one and get mad at myself for missing what I am sure was the best part. And I admit it. I pause when I get to reality television and I don’t know why. My eyes well up every time I see a family struggling with their loved one’s addictions on “Intervention,” I laugh at the commentary of all of the reality shows on “The Soup,” and I talk to the television about how I would do find a better shortcut on the “Amazing Race.” One of these shows called “Hoarders” really makes me stop and think about some of the ways I have held onto things that often held me back. We sometimes hold onto things because they hold emotional value to us. I have boxes and boxes of syllabuses, clogging books and resourses that I have always thought would be a great resourse for others, but I have never gotten around to making a way for others to use them. And all of this “stuff” isn’t the onlyl thing that we can pile up until it gathers so much dust it makes us sick. Sometimes we hold onto situations and people in our lives that aren’t healthy. Maybe it is easier to deal with the discomfort than to make a clean sweep. Seeing all of the clutter isn’t easy. Sometimes when we step back from all of the “stuff” it is a little sobering. Be realistic about what you need and can use and take some time during your holiday break to sort through those old records, cue sheets, tshirts and the like and take them to your first class of the new year and just let the new folks have at it. Just as the trees shed their leaves during the Fall season, shed off all of the negative energy and clear out the clutter in your business and your teams and classes and see how much easier you will breathe. Change that channel you are on and enjoy a whole new program!
Happy Clogging!Jeff DriggsEditor

A Well Deserved Honor(Continued from page 8)those numbers rose to six or seven a year.”
The group members began to make a name for themselves, and for the man who started the team, Skeen quickly became one of the most sought-after instructors to teach at clogging workshops. His team held National Clogging and Hoedown Championship titles from 1987-2001 in Running Set Hoedown, 4 Couple Precision, Country Hoedown and Southern Appalachian. He joined with Bob Johnson at some competitions, and they danced their groups together as a parking lot team.
The divisions in which they succeeded were four couple precision, Kentucky running set precision, Kentucky running set hoedown, southern Appalachian freestyle, southern Appalachian smooth, open precision and open freestyle.
“At our prime, we were dancing in four age divisions: elementary, junior, young adult and adult. I had over 60-70 dancers, and we were traveling 20-30 weekends a year competing,” Skeen says.
Skeen not only had a passion for clogging but also found a passion in music. He learned how to play the bass, fiddle, spoons and a little bit of mandolin.
His goal is to keep the traditional side of (Continued on page 12)

For Skeen, “It was a shocker and tear-jerker. My wife, Cheryl, and my old dance partner, Mitzi (Summerland), knew about the award before I did. They surprised me and invited all of my old dance team members. It was so touching that some of my old dancers were at Maggie Valley
for the award that I hadn’t seen in years. It was like a reunion.”
Skeen was overwhelmed to have been one of three people chosen to be inducted out of hundreds of thousands of dancers across the nation.
Clogging is a very important activity in the Skeen household. In fact, Mr. and Mrs. Skeen met while he was an instructor training others in judging and directing clogging. Their daughter, Megan, also clogs under the instruction of Summerland. The Skeens help out with Summerland’s
Lexington, North Carolina based dance team.
When asked why he continues to clog, Skeen’s reply is “for the fun and fellowship. It brings a lot of people together, and that’s what the purpose of it is.”
A Well Deserved Honor(Continued from page 10)
clogging prevalent. “There are fewer and fewer people that have the knowledge and background of clogging. There are a lot of dance forms, but I like to keep the square dance side of it alive,” he says.
Clog dancing originated from communities gathering for barn dances. It later evolved into competitions and has progressed from there.
Skeen has won various honors and awards. He has won many solo awards and overall grand champion awards. He was nominated to the 1986 All American Clogging Team, 1997 International Clogging Team, 1991 All Star Team, NCHC and All Star Team Director, NCHC.
The highest honor Skeen has received as a clogger has been his induction into the hall of fame. The ceremony is held each year at Maggie Valley, where a National Dance-Off is conducted. Teams compete all year to qualify for this event.
Photos: Above:Elliott Skeen is known for his energetic rubber-legged style.

HFH member Chip Futrell (4th from right) was a successful clogger and choreographer himself and taught many workshops during the 1980’s and 1990’s. His choreography to “Bit by Bit” is on the CLOG national dance list.

After taping the food segment in the afternoon, Zimmern and the crew prepared to capture a group of cloggers and old time flatfoot dancers and square dancers at a hoedown, or outdoor folk music celebration, later in the evening featuring clogging instructor Jeff Driggs, old time clogger Lou Maiuri and young dancers from the Steel Power cloggers of Studio One in Winchester, Kentucky.
On “Bizarre Foods,” Zimmern searches the world to capture the culture and authentic, and sometimes unpalatable, food traditions of places he visits. The West Virginia gathering attracted the attention of his research crew. The process started about a month before when a “Bizarre Foods” researcher spoke with clogging teacher and enthusiast Jeff Driggs, who publishes Doubletoe Times, a clogging magazine. When he told the researcher about the hoedown and the cultural foods they would serve, the story developed quickly. “The show called with a list they called their dream scenario,” Driggs said. “They said they

would love to find a remote location in West Virginia where a group of friends get together to jam to live bluegrass music, clog dance and old time flat-foot dance and even do some of the old time square dances, and of course bring covered dishes of uniquely West Virginia foods.” The producers said they realized that this was a lot to
ask and they would settle for anything they could get from the list. When I replied “We can do all of that,” they seemed incredulous, but a reply email with photos and details sent them over the moon and they ended up building the bulk of the show around the group of cloggers assembled for the hoedown gathering. “We need something that is a legitimate part of the culture here. We don’t want to do something that doesn’t have any real gravitas to it,” Zimmern said. “We also love to do things that to a lot of
people will be surprising. Our West Virginia segment provided all of these things.” In his four seasons of “Bizarre Foods,” Zimmern’s eaten termites in Uganda, pickled pigs heart in St. Petersburg, curried iguana in Trinidad, moose nose in Alaska and monkfish liver and beaver chili in Maine. Most West Virginians will not consider the foods Zimmern features in this segment to be unusual, but Zimmern points out that foods commonly appreciated in one culture are despised in others. “I tell people all the time when they ask me how could you eat that roasted water buffalo gizzard in that jungle in Taiwan. Well, first of all that was the freshest, most beautiful animal that drank clean stream water, ate tea leaves in the mountains,” he said. “It might be foreign to you, but it was delicious and some of the

freshest meat you can have. “But that hot dog that you’re eating or that bologna sandwich. That has some questionable origins.” Driggs saw the event as a wonderful opportunity to showcase the culture of clogging and the amazing bond that dancers have. “I hope that the program captures the sense of family that cloggers share,” Driggs said. “From Lou -- in his 80’s -- calling a square dance with the band, to a homemade plywood dance floor filled with freestylers, to a group of young girls in bedazzled jean shorts and plaid shirts dancing an energetic line dance, there was a sense of unity and joy that I hope comes across in the show.” Lou Maiuri became a focus of the show. Lou’s parents immigrated to the USA from Italy, and Lou grew up in the rich Italian-American culture of North Central West Virginia. The show visited Maiuri’s home in Summersville, W.Va. to watch him make his family’s recipe pasta sauce and talk about the traditions that continue to be handed down. Lou brought his pasta to the hoedown and helped Driggs prepare pepperoni rolls with host Zimmern on the taping of the show.
Lou Maiuri, founder and director of the Appalachian Country Cloggers, is known across the country for his abilities as a clogger, flatfooter, and old-time mountain style square dance caller. A 1998 inductee into America’s Clogging Hall of Fame and a 1988 member of the All-American Clogging Team, Lou has won countless awards both as a solo performer and competition team dancer. Most recently, in February 2005, he was the grand champion flatfoot dancer at the Florida State Clogging Competition in Tampa, FL. Over its 20 plus year existence, his team has racked up numerous awards across the southeastern United States, including national championships in both the Running Set and Country Hoedowns. Lou is equally well-known for his abilities as a teacher and has dedicated the past 25 years of his life to spreading Appalachian culture across the country. Every summer people can see him at West Virginia state parks, where he entertains and teaches visiting campers. He is also a regular caller and instructor at the Vandalia Gathering and the Appalachian String Band Festival and works at the Augusta Heritage

Festival at Davis & Elkins College as a mountaindance caller and instructor. He currently serves as President and workshop chairman of America’s Clogging Hall of Fame and is a certified judge of competitive clogging, flatfoot, and traditional square dancing. Additionally, Lou has volunteered thousands of hours giving lessons to people wanting to learn how to dance and has worked with schools, senior centers, nursing homes, and 4-H camps across West Virginia. In July 2000, Lou had the privilege of dancing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry with the Melvin Sloan Dancers during the Opry’s 75th Anniversary celebration. In May 2008, he was honored by the State of West Virginia as the annual recipient of the Vandalia Award, the state’s highest honor for those who have contributed to the preservation of the old-time mountain culture. In his early eighties, Lou and his wife of 60
years, Jessie, continue to promote clogging and traditional clogging. The taping also included the Steel Power Cloggers of Studio One in Winchester, Kentucky. Studio One is home to several award winning competition clogging teams; Power-N-Precision, Sole Power, Ultimate Power, Power Too, Steel Power, Lil Power and Power Outage. Directed by sisters, Regina Goodpaster-Culton and Kelly Goodpaster-Fithen, Studio One brought the young ladies of their group Steel Power to the taping and the young ladies stole the host’s heart and brought a great energy to the hoedown. While the girl’s loved the music and dancing, some were a little nervous to try the unique foods. “Ewww, what are those?” exclaimed one of the girls peering at the mason jars filled with long green spears of wild ramps in pickling liquid. The homemade macaroni and cheese with buttered bread crumb topping and homemade cheese cake and German chocolate cake fared better with the young dancers. For clogger and instructor Driggs, the taping was a family affair. His eldest brother Bill brought his bluegrass band, the Grass Stains, to
The Doubletoe Times Magazine of Clogging www.doubletoe.com 21
The menu for the hoedown included lots of deer meat recipes, including deer/bison meatballs and deer sausage, pickled ramps (a local early spring
vegetable, a perennial wild onion very much like a wild leek with a strong garlic-like odor and a pronounced onion flavor), pan fried corn fritters, pepperoni rolls (the West Virginia snack invention that allowed early coal miners to bring cured meat into the mines baked into a roll) and much more.
This was not the show’s first visit to the mountain state. Zimmern visited West Virginia in 2009 for a segment featuring Ember chef Brian Ball at Snowshoe Resort, who served him squirrel brains simmered in their skulls in a rich stock. He used the squirrel meat to make squirrel au vin, a dish similar to coq au vin made with squirrel instead of chicken, chicken-fried squirrel and skewered squirrel ham hocks seared on Tahitian sea salt flats. “People will ask me tonight what we made and some may say that’s not strange,” Zimmern said. “Well, it is to someone in Iceland.” The episode will air on February 27 on the Travel Channel.
play for the hoedown, and other brothers supplied wild game and dishes for the show. His parents, Phil and Nancy, and his Aunt Judy Bowden also came and helped prepare food and serve the crowd at the hoedown. “I am so proud that we could showcase clogging in a positive way, but I never would have expected that we would have the opportunity to do it as part of a show dedicated to food,” Driggs said. Driggs describes himself as a meat and potatoes man and was nervous the type of local foods they would present on the show would be unusual enough for the theme of the show, but producers assured him that their emphasis on this season was the connection of food and regional culture. In preparing the different types of pepperoni rolls for the taping, host Zimmern loaded his with hot peppers. This was the roll that was sampled on the air, and Driggs -- who had never eaten this hot a pepper before -- closed his eyes and took a bite. “It was really good,” Driggs said. “I think I might be a little more adventurous with eating after this experience.”
