Glendale Glitter and Glow January 14th 4 – 9 p.m.

“January brings the snow – makes our feet and fingers glow.” Well, Historic Downtown Glendale won’t have any snow but we will have the glow! This will be the last night of Glendale Glitters and what makes it so special? The 20 hot air balloons glowing throughout the 16 blocks of Historic Downtown Glendale for starters. You’ll need to sign up for these contests, and they are on a first come first served basis. .

There will be 11 different bands for your listening pleasure, everything from rock to blues, and country to pop. The shops and restaurants will be open, enhancing your experience. Festival rides and food will be set up throughout the area, so be sure to explore the entire festival. Want to stay for the After Glow? California based tribute band Journey Unauthorized will be performing from 9:30 – 11 p.m.

Chocolate Affaire February 3, 4 & 5

The sweetest time of year is just around the corner, and for all of us chocolate lovers, it can’t get here soon enough! Over 30 chocolate purveyors from Arizona and around the country will gather in Glendale for this award winning festival that celebrates not only chocolate, but romance and the arts as well. This festival has become the largest gathering of national

romance artists in the Southwest. Meet the authors and attend workshops for a truly unique experience. The beloved horse & carriage rides will be clip clopping their way through the charming area all during the festival. Back for the third year is the Plein Air Competition. The artists set up their easels right out in the open and paint the day away. There is no charge to attend the festival. Parking is available at the two city parking lots for $10. Street parking is free.

2 Do You Know Glendale?

On a very hot day last summer, Bears & More had a visit from one of their favorite people, John Dean of Arizona Search Dogs.

Back in 2006, Bears & More became a supporter of AZ Search Dogs, hosting silent auctions each year at their Steiff event.

In 2010 & 2011 AZ Search Dogs came out for Teddy Bear Day in September and set up on the lawns along 58

th Drive

and did demonstrations all day long. The guests loved seeing the dogs climb ladders, jumping over obstacles and finding “victims” hidden in barrels and galvanized tubs.

You see, AZ Search Dogs is a non-profit organization that trains, certifies and develops Canine Search Specialist teams to be mobilized with Urban Search & Rescue Task Forces. They have been deployed to several hurricane

The Bear Hunt Saturday, February 25th 8:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Since our last newsletter, there has been a whole lot of activity! We are all very excited about the opening of The Gas Light Inn. Completely redecorated with antiques and wood floors, The Gas Light Inn is ready for your overnight stay. (5745 W. hit areas, The World Trade Center, Salt Lake City Olympics and local searches for valley residents.

They train at least twice a week and usually at a rubble pile in Tempe. It’s very important that they train constantly. The dogs need to be ready to go at any given moment.

And so, on that hot summer day an idea was born.

With the neighborhood setting of the Catlin Court shops it offers AZ Search Dogs a more urban like setting in which to train.

Here’s where you come in. If you are over 18 and would like to come be a victim and hide, bring all your camouflage gear, your deer stands, whatever you have and your best hiding skills and $10 and see if you can outsmart the dogs!

The hiding boundary on the west is the alley behind Bears & More, on the east 58

th

Avenue, Myrtle on the north and Palmaire on the south.

Check in will begin at 7:30, with the timed hides starting at 8:30.

Your $10 registration fee will be donated to Officer Brad Jones’ family. Officer Jones was killed in the line of duty in Glendale and AZ Search Dogs asked that the registration fees be donated to his wife and children.

Cabela’s & Ty have signed on to be partners for this great community event.

Come hide from the dogs, help them train to always be ready to help those in need and support the family of a fallen officer. Or, come and watch all the fun at the first ever Bear Hunt in Glendale. Either way, it’s sure to be a fun day.

Hosting a party is lots of fun, but it is also lots of work, or like we like to say, a labor of love.

With so many great venues, think about hosting your next party right here in Historic Glendale.

For baby and bridal showers, The Spicery in our 1895 Home, Kimberly Ann’s Victorian Tea Room and CeeCee’s on the Corner are all beautiful and feminine in style. Both The Spicery and CeeCee’s have outdoor seating, perfect for this time of year.

Papa Ed’s Ice Cream Parlor is a great place for a birthday party. With the beautiful garden, there’s lots of room for kids to run and play. Adults like to have their parties there too – and the sky is the limit on what you can do, just ask Linda.

Having a Party?

Now, if you are really thinking out of the box, why not host a party with a theme? Knitting (Sally Knits), tole painting (The Tole Shop), felting (Bears & More), rug hooking (The Country Maiden), doll making (AZ Dolls & Gifts), flower design (Glendale Flowers), rubber stamping/scrapbooking (Oohhh I Like That Stamp), or call The Astrology Store for something out of this world.

These are just a few ideas for you to ponder while planning your next party, and hopefully inspiring you to celebrate your occasion in a brand new way.

Hosting a going away party? Why not try Haus Murphy’s or Bitz-ee Mama’s. Both of them have large seating areas and big menus and serve spirits. Haus Murphy’s has unique German beers and Bitz-ee Mama’s has lots of different Tequilas. For weddings, The Woman’s Club, The Glendale Civic Center, Virginia’s House and Manor at Catlin Court are all beautiful. The Woman’s Club is a historic building and an intimate setting. Virginia’s House is just west of 59

th

Avenue and is delightful. Manor at Catlin Court is housed in a bungalow style church, with a main floor, a basement floor and a gazebo. The Glendale Civic Center is a modern building and has both indoor and outdoor options.
