    January 2011

    Happy New Year! NOT

This morning the radio announced that theFrench are the world champions ofpessimism. With a good standard of living, abeautiful country, great food how couldthis be?!

[French newspaper] Le Parisien leads with the headline How the world sees the future. The paper reports on a BVA-GALLUP survey carried out among 64thousand people in 53 countries whichplaces the French at the top of the leaguetable for pessimism. Almost two out of

three French people - 61 per cent -believe 2011 will bring economicdifficulties, one in three feel theirsituation will worsen. One of the papersarticles is headlined Were the worldchampions for pessimism. It quotes apsychiatrist Serge Hefez saying the Frenchfeel that the state, which usually protectspeople, has abandoned them. *

The state, the family, the schools may fail, but the Creator God is faithful in seekingand saving rebels from alienation and fromhis justice. Pray for believers and thechurch in France to have courage and thewords to announce the good news of JesusChrist.

    Epiphany

January 6 marks theWestern church holidaycelebrating the arrivalof the magi inBethlehem and theirvisit to Jesus, Mary &Joseph. Here inFrance, during about amonth, this holiday istraditionally celebratedwith a special pastry

known as the galette des rois (The kings cake) or in theSouthwest with the coque des rois. The galette is a bakedflakey pastry stuffed with almond paste and the coque is a roundbrioche decorated with sugar crystals or candied fruit. Thegalette is served with a sparkling wine or hard cider for adults.Especially for children (of all ages!) the baker hides a smallporcelain or metal figurine (fve) in the pastry. Whoever findsthe fve in his portiongets to wear the gold

paper crown thatcomes with everygalette or coque. This week, we areinviting severalneighbor families toshare a galette (ortwo or three) with us.It will be a way to getto know them better and we thought wed read a story from theBible from around the time of Jesus birth.

Pray that we might have an open door to speak of the hopewe have in Jesus Christ with our neighbors and other friends.

    Your partners in the gospel,
