From the EditorSo, another year has gone by and we’re all wondering what the next 12 months will bring us.

More snow, and cold weather is a definite - but will we have a blazing hot April, May and June followed by a wet summer again. Who can tell? Certainly not my seaweed, that blew away in the last lot of gales we had!

I love weather! I never understood it when I was at school; it was only when I began to teach it for A level, did it finally sink in! Whilst it would be nice for a while to wake up every day to glorious warm weather, I think it would grow a little tedious, don’t you.

Variety is, as they say, the spice of life and if nothing else our weather gives us it - even if the last few weeks hasn’t revealed much in the way of variety! And if we didn’t have the weather to talk to each other about, what would we say!

Litton Playground

Litton playground volunteers are holding a social evening on the 14th

January in the Litton Village hall.

This will be an opportunity to find out what is going on, to help shape the future of the playground and to drink tea and coffee and eat cake! It will also be an chance to hear what the children of Litton think about their playground too.

Everyone is welcome and the evening starts at 7.30pm.

Litton Winter Market

Despite gale force winds and extreme temperatures, Litton

Winter market was a great success. The takings of many local traders were up on last year and the Friends of Litton Village raised more than £820 from the barbecue and mulled wine stalls. The school held its postponed

Christmas fair on the same evening which resulted in Litton really buzzing with activity.

Thanks go to everybody who braved the weather, to the volunteers who spent hours clearing snow(the day before it melted anyway!) and erecting the stalls and to all the traders who were very stoic.

Keep your eyes peeled for the week-long charity Valentine’s Event. More details to follow.

Thank You

We would like to say thank you to Tideswell surgery for all the care,

understanding and help we received from them while George was so ill. Dr Mark, Dr Cox and Dr Cooke also the nurses and all the receptionist they all went out of their way to help us and the care we received was second to none. Thank you

One Gold Ring...At some time in the first half of December, when the snow was thick and even, a wedding ring was lost in Town Head, probably on Condliffe Road or Lower Terrace Road.

If you happen to have found this ring, you may have the magic power to give this sad Christmas story a happy ending – by handing it in to the Editor, Pete Hawkins, at Jaret House.

Calling all groups

The Tideswell School of Food opened its doors in early

December at a rousing opening ceremony (more elsewhere).

The Cubs and Scouts were the first in there, cooking up a storm and a fabulous Christmas buffet for their parents.

The school would now like to invite

every club society and group in the village to come and visit and enjoy the facilities, especially if you’d like to combine it with a spot of cooking too.

If you’d like to hold a meeting at the school please contact Sheila or Kim on 01298 871262.

New e-Forum Launched

We are introducing a new e-forum (email forum) to the

Community Messaging Service, which will give you the chance to contribute to the setting of priorities in your neighbourhood.

As you may be aware, each of our Safer Neighbourhood policing teams hold a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering residents the chance to select what their local police officers and other agencies target.

The aim of our e-forum is to make it easier for you to have a say on priorities.

Simply reply to this email and tell us what you would like your team to target.

Your concerns will be sent to the Tideswell Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team and they will discuss all responses at their next forum meeting which will be held on:

Monday 10th January 2011 at 7pm - the meeting will be held in Great Longstone, the venue will be confirmed nearer the time

Each team works in partnership with local agencies, which include parish, town, district and county councils, housing associations, Derbyshire Youth Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch among others, to help keep your area a safe,

clean and pleasant place to live.

Priorities can include a wide variety of issues, including anti-social or nuisance behaviour, graffiti or vandalism, speeding, parking or anything which you feel impacts on the quality of life for you and your neighbours.

You are still more than welcome to attend the meeting if you would prefer to speak to officers in person or you can also call our non emergency telephone number, 0345 123 33 33.

You can be reassured that we will listen to your concerns, act on them and maintain our commitment to provide a high quality policing service to everyone in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

Finally, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read the email and for being a valued member of our Community Messaging Service.

Yours faithfully,

Chief Superintendent Peter Lewis, High Peak and Derbyshire Dales (B Division)

Please note: Our e-forum is not monitored 24 hours a day, if you want to report an incident that is ongoing please call 0345 123 33 33 except in an emergency when you must always call 999.

At t’FlicksThis month’s film from Tideswell Cinema

is Alice in Wonderland , to be shown on Thursday 27th January at 7.30pm in The George. Non-members are always welcome, so if you missed this internationally successful film when it was released, do take up the invitation to see it screened in our own village. Guest membership is £4.50.

Alice in Wonderland is a sequel to the book, and Alice is now nineteen. She accidentally returns to the magical world of her childhood adventure. Live action and animation combine to bring a hugely entertaining and enjoyable film, that will brighten up the coldest of winter’s

evenings.

Film and Feast

What a combination - a great film and wonderful food! Tideswell School of

Food and Tideswell Cinema are joining forces for a special fund-raising evening on Saturday 29th January, open to anyone, in aid of Tideswell Cinema’s urgent need of a new projector.

The evening starts at 6pm with a glass of wine and canapes in St John’s Institute (behind the church). The film is Julie and Julia, starring Meryl Streep, and is the story of two women learning to cook and finding success - one in 1949, one in 2002. Part way through we will progress to Tideswell School of Food, to enjoy a beautifully prepared meal, with an opportunity also to experience first hand this exciting new Taste Tideswell venture. We will then return to the Institute for the conclusion of the film.

While wanting to offer as many places as we can, inevitably there is a limit, so please contact Tony Wilson as soon as possible, on 872379, [email protected] , for full details and to book your place.

A village event not to be missed!

A word on funding

When Tideswell Cinema first opened its doors in 2005, it was part of a larger initiative supported by Derbyshire Film. This allowed us to share mobile cinema equipment with other villages. We didn’t have to pay but we did have to transport it to fairly distant venues such as New Mills.

The funding for Derbyshire Film dried up and most of the film groups around us funded their own equipment; Tideswell Cinema was gifted the original mobile cinema kit. Whilst this was good news, it had been heavily used and much of it was being held together by Sellotape! The sound system was particularly poor and in need of upgrading and the projector was prone to failure.

Membership fees and tickets on the door have managed to fund the purchase of films, the licence to show the films, insurances, hall fees and any repairs that were necessary from time to time. We always knew that the fees would struggle to replace equipment in the event of it becoming beyond economic repair.

Earlier this year we did manage to replace the sound equipment. This now enables us to offer an experience which is much like a modern cinema.

At the start of the season our projector finally packed up and we now need to replace it. The proposed showing of Julie and Julia with the Tideswell School of Food meal is one way to raise some additional funding to pay for this.

We do understand that the cost of the Julie and Julia event is rather more than we normally charge to members but we are targeting this as fund raising opportunity. Tideswell School of Food has also been very generous to us by offering their facilities free-of-charge and with very little cost for the food itself.

We thank you for your ongoing support.

Super Posties

This winter has been a testing time for everybody. Deep

snow, freezing temperatures and icy roads and pavements has managed to disrupt all our lives considerably.

There have been benefits too; our local shops have certainly seen a boost in trade as people stay in the village and shop locally.

People have gone to extraordinary lengths to help each other out and in many cases to continue to provide the service that most of us probably take for granted.

To everyone that has worked hard to ensure our lives continue as normally as possible, we salute you.

On the Beat

Christmas has come and gone for another year and we now look to the future. May I

take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and prosperous New Year in 2011.

Can I nudge your memories? In the November newsletter I commented about your home security, locking doors, windows, turning lights on and closing curtains when its dark, Christmas packaging to be kept out of sight and not to leave valuables in your car. Please can I also remind drivers about the children’s concerns about car drivers using their vehicles along Bishop Pursglove School driveway? Please have a think about what I have said. We do live in a very safe area; Derbyshire Constabulary is on target for reducing crime for the eighth year in a row across the County.

There have only been three crimes within our Safer Neighbourhood Policing Area since the last newsletter and I do empathise that with all the victims.

A motor vehicle was stolen from Buxton Road at Tideswell but the offender, who was not from the area, was arrested and has been charged to court. If any person has information about any crime they can contact me on the numbers below or alternatively ring Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

We have experienced some extraordinary weather conditions, large snow falls, icy pavements and roads. The cold temperatures in the December have also been extraordinary, with minus 19oC being recorded on thirteen bends just outside Bakewell and I am led to believe that the severe cold may well continue for some time into the new year. Please can you consider checking on a neighbour, perhaps of senior years? They may live next door or nearby and ideally will know who you are. The weather may have caused them to run short of food supplies; they may just need some milk

or a few items from the shop. If you have the opportunity please can you ensure that their heating is working and they are able to keep warm? A regular chat to an elderly neighbour can lift their spirits and cheer up their day. One day we may all be glad of a visit by someone who cares!

Driving in the cold weather, icy windscreens are always a problem and I would like to suggest a possible solution. I use the silver sun screen that I put on the inside of my car in the summer to keep my car cool. Now its winter, when I have parked my vehicle up overnight I place the silver sunscreen on the outside of the windscreen and close the door on each edge to hold it tightly to the glass windscreen surface. Placed correctly, this is an easy way to protect both windscreen wipers and the windscreen from ice and snow.

I need to squash a few rumours about my retirement. It is with a lot of sadness that I must let you know that I am now on the count down to my final retirement from the Police Service. However my last day of service will be no later that the 31st October 2011. I can assure you that I will be replaced, when I do finally leave you, someone will carry on in my place, until that time, it will be business as usual and I will continue providing you with the highest possible police service that I can.

Police Community Support Officer Phil Brigs will be taking on the task for all future news letters starting from the February Edition.

The Tideswell Mile

On Saturday 12th March 2011, Phil Whitehead plans to hold a

sponsored spin cycle for a marathon 12 hours! In this time he will cycle on a special static spin bike which simulates a real ride. He’ll will cycle as hard as is usual in a hour-long session of a spin class so it will not be easy!

He will be burning off over 8,000 calories, losing 3kg in fluids and covering at least 120 miles - which is the same distance as cycling from London to Bristol! He will be accompanied by fitness trainer Paul Weir and various others, including the Friday ‘Tidza Spin’ classes who will dip in for the odd hour to keep

him company! The 12 hours will start at 11am, with the venue, the Star Inn (Tideswell), kindly donating the space. The pub will still be open as normal so he is hoping to get many people to pop in and watch - you can even have a go for a donation!

All proceeds are going to the charity CRY (www.c-r-y.org.uk) - Cardiac Risk in the Young. If you would like to know more, get involved or donate (money or items for a raffle to be held on the day), please get in touch with Phil on either 07968 933 023 or [email protected].

Thank you for your support.

Reduce Waste

Did you know that every month in the UK households each throw

away £50 worth of food that could have been eaten? By making a shopping list, checking the cupboards and fridge and eating up leftovers for lunch, we could all enjoy an extra bit of cash in the run up to Christmas and reduce the amount of good food being thrown away.

Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for technology and recycling, Councillor John Allsop, said: “If people need a New Year’s resolution, they could think about reducing food waste all the time and save £50 a month every month.”

Taste Tideswell updateJust 18 months ago, Tideswell held its

first Big Idea meeting to explore ways of spending £400,000 of lottery money. Now Tideswell has its own Food of School which opened its doors to the public on the 6th of December.

The opening ceremony was a great success. Despite the freezing temperatures around 50 villagers gathered in the Courtyard as Tideswell Male Voice Choir sang. At twelve o’clock Naimh and Amy from Bishop Pursglove School cut the ceremonial six foot sausage, specially made by Phil Gibbs and the builders handed over the keys to the chefs in the kitchen and the Church bells rang out in a faultless display of ringing.

Reaction to the facilities have been overwhelmingly positive and despite the inevitable teething troubles of a new build, it’s working very well. We’ve had two trial courses, one with Sarah Beeny in attendance and one full-blown course for Tim’s home village. I must say it’s a joy to see the school working so well.

We now have six members of staff. Sheila Russell from Miller’s Dale is Head of Operations, Steve Vardy who worked at High Peak College is our Head of School and will be delivering many of our cookery courses. Michelle Lindley from Tideswell is our education officer who will develop our work with local and visiting schools. Last but not least Kim Wathall, Admin and Marketing Assistant,Vicki Haslam, Kitchen Assistant and Tim Nicol our Managing Director complete the current team. There is still one vacancy for a porter/cleaner and anyone interested should

contact the school for details.

The School’s website is up and running (www.tideswellschooloffood.co.uk) for details of the courses we’re running. Community courses will be published as soon as details are finalised and we look forward to seeing as many people from the village coming to see us.

Why do we need a School?

Taste Tideswell is a not-for-profit social enterprise company. We plan to run

a host of community courses in cooking, growing and making. In order to pay for these, and to employ the staff we need to run the business, we need to make money. The School of Food with its leisure courses in cooking and brewing will bring in that money as will businesses using our facilities as a location for training and team-building workshops.

We’re also developing the Tideswell Made brand which will enable local food and drink producers to sell more of their produce and thereby make themselves more financially sustainable. The brand will be available to buy into by local producers, shops, pubs and cafes, bed and breakfast and self-catering accommodations - indeed anyone who uses locally sourced or produced food and drink.

You’ll begin to see the Tideswell Made ‘T’ logo on shops and produce in the New Year.

What planned for 2011?We will be planning lots of events for the coming year - opportunities for the whole community to Grow It, Cook It, Make It, Sell It and Share It. Keep your eye on the Taste Tideswell website (tastetideswell.co.uk) or in the Village Voice for details.
