For a really super time and unique vacation, if you can swing it, I highly recommend that you take advantage of this holiday adventure. It will be something that will be talked about for years. I know; I still get chills of thrills remembering what we did back in 1992. The first and only time I have been scuba diving was on that trip; and we did soooo much more. And, I expect to see everyone in the GTA out to the February TWKK Winter Tournament in a few weeks. The flyer is at the end of FOCUS. We always need the black belts out to support the judging. NEW CLUB HEAD ANNOUNCED FOR CLARINGTON

2010 brings big changes to Clarington Wado-Kai. Sensei Vanessa Connors Sandan is stepping down and handing her role to Sensei Derek Barton Nidan. After a long search for a new Club Head, Sensei Derek will assume the role as Head Sensei for Clarington. Please join us in congratulating Sensei Derek; he will have big shoes to fill. Sensei Derek is no stranger to Clarington as he was one of the original students of Sensei Jim and Sensei Marg in Bowmanville.

Thank you, Sensei Vanessa, for so many years of your teaching and hurry back soon; the front of the class will always be waiting for your wisdom and knowledge. Thank you to the parents and students who made up a memory photo album. The album showed how much we have all grown over the years. Sensei Vanessa was around to watch and help us all. Of course Sensei did not let us off easy; on her last night Sensei provided a great workout, followed by Pizza and those Yummy Cupcakes and, with time still remaining in the evening, it was back to work and a last workout that made most of us jump for joy; well, at least Corey was jumping!!

We will all miss Sensei Vanessa and will embrace each visit she makes. We hear that she will be dropping in to many dojo’s during the year, so we say: Be Ready!

THANK YOU, SENSEI VANESSA You will be missed!!

Sensei says:

“Work hard – you never

know when I will be back!”

YOUR BAHAMA MAMAS! LENORE ENG

VERONICA CIZMAR

TWKK meets BWKK in the Bahamas.

The big news... we’ve managed to add one more day for a lower price! Now only $1,563.00.

Only one month to go, and counting! The excitement mounts for all attending the Bahamas trip. We thought we were all ready, but just recently WestJet Airlines added a direct flight to Freeport. With the competitive prices we decided to take advantage of the opportunity.

The total is now even cheaper at $1,563 CAN. PLUS we managed to add another day to our trip. It is now from Feb 12-19.

We want to officially thank Sensei Freeman and his crew for being so accommodating to the change. With this extension to the trip, Bahamas Wado Kai and Bahamamamas have been furiously working on schedules and details to add even MORE fun in the SUN!

I know the TWKK ‘North’ look forward to sharing the 8 days and 7 nights with our hosts and fellow Karate-kas of the BWKK ‘South’. We just can’t wait!

TWKK WEB SITE Web Site Director,

Leaton Bernard Yodan

On behalf of the Toronto Wado-Kai organization I present the revamped Toronto Wado-Kai website – www.torontowadokai.com.

In October 2009, the host of our site’s supplementary information, Geocities, closed affecting access to some of our information. Our project was well underway to analyze this additional information and how best to accommodate it. However, the launch of the updated site was delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

Although numerous and significant, the primary changes to our website are related to privacy requirements, more access to required information, and our ability to readily update the site’s content.

To assist us with the accuracy and integrity of the site’s content, I ask that you immediately review and provide feedback as follows:

1. Validation of all your dojo info – contact, location, etc >>> Sensei Dods 2. Our black belt listings and ranks >>> Sensei Sheyan 3. Accuracy of the overall site information >>> Sensei Bernard 4. Any functional issues and anything else >>> Sensei Bernard

Special thanks to Sensei Ron Sheyan and Sensei Robb Dods for their tireless efforts during construction and testing, and Sensei Manara for his guidance and support. Also, thanks to all the related Club Heads and others who re-validated and updated information. Thanks to all of you for your patience.

Bahamas/Caribbean Aikiwa (Wado Kai) Karate Do / Kubudoh hosted its Awards Presentation in conjunction with 35th Anniversary observances Monday, November 2, 2009 at the SJW Community Centre. The presentations by Sensei Freeman capped off a month-long series of activities, including the staging of the Annual BWKK Youth Fall Kata Tournament Classic staged over the week of Monday 26th – Friday 30th October, 2009 at the Community Centre. Some 65 Karate-kas, over six divisions, participated.

Sensei Freeman gave his usual prepared address to the invited guests. These included youth programs stakeholders, family and friends of Karate-kas, representatives of the Community Centre administration, officials from the Local Government Council, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

An excerpt from Sensei Freeman’s address is included in this issue of FOCUS.

On Wednesday, December 9, 2009 we staged our Christmas Bake Sale, our final fundraiser for the year by the BWKK TEAM. The Centre closed for holidays on Friday, December 11th. Before everyone went running off in every direction at once, Sensei Freeman had also deemed Wednesday 9th as FAMILY PHOTO DAY. All community program participants at the Centre were asked to pose for family pictures…with recently-awarded medals and trophies.

Wishing all TWKK the best in the New Year, in the spirit of Peace and Harmony.

We offer an intense adult training environment where you can augment your core Karate skills by studying our integrated curriculum of throws, joint locks, pressure points and self-defence techniques.

Classes are held in downtown Toronto, at Ryerson University, in the Recreation and Athletics Centre (RAC) Studio I.

Active members of the Toronto Wado Kai Karate organization are welcome to train with us at Ryerson: There is no drop-in fee for guests who attend class.

Note: We hold Conditioning Classes on the first and third Saturday of every month plus Guest Seminars on the last Saturday of every month.

December 2009 Movie Night and Party December 11: We enjoyed a very entertaining movie night and party. The feature presentation was the 2008 David Mamet film ‘Red Belt’, but what made the event such a success was the absolutely delicious pot-luck dinner and, of course, the attendees. Stay tuned for news of future screenings at the Ryerson Dojo!

December 2009 Guest Seminar: Jujitsu December 12: Sensei Neil Moir led an excellent class that focused on core small-circle jujitsu techniques. The seminar started with a review of essential basics before progressing to more intricate and challenging techniques, providing much food for thought.

The seminar offered an excellent opportunity for Karate-ka to learn about a complementary martial art and to enhance our Wado foundation.

Maple Leaf Gardens: Potential Future Home of Ryerson Karate December 1: Ryerson University and the Government of Canada have announced plans to redevelop part of historic Maple Leaf Gardens as a new Recreation and Athletics Centre for the university.

SENSEI JOSE-CARLOS GARCIA NANADAN

C.O. THERESA VIRGIN 1ST KYU

Well, the New Year is upon us and Oshawa/Whitby Wado-Kai wish our sister clubs health and happiness for 2010.

We have had a very busy few months and hope to recap it as best as possible.

On September 14, 2009, Sensei Patrick Sullivan and his wife Kyla gave birth to a little girl, Hannah Marie, 9lbs 11 ounces. Gabriel, Benjamin and Tobias are also doing well and taking care of their little sister. We wish Patrick, Kyla and their family our best.

On October 24, 2009, two notable events occurred.

The Thornhill tournament results for our members are as follows: Ethan M. (yellow): 2nd place Kumite and Kata Colton M. (blue): 2nd place Kumite Daina A. (Shodan-ho): 1st place Kumite Michael K. (Jr. Shodan): 1st place Kata

The other event that occurred (which precluded some of us from attending the tournament) was the wedding between Sensei Anson Burnett and Sempai Jenny Moore. Anson and Jenny were united in marriage at a beautiful service and reception at the Black Diamond Golf Club. Congratulations to both Anson and Jenny!

December 5, 2009 was our annual Children’s Tournament. This was our best turnout ever!! Once again we would like to thank Sensei Lenore Eng and Veronica Cizmar for their excellent demonstration — it was inspiring.

Oshawa Tournament new competitors

We thank all our sister clubs, the participants and the judges. Your assistance and participation was awesome. We had a great time that day — and hope to see you all next year.

SENSEI DAN DUCE, NIDAN SENSEI KIM DUGGAN,

NIDAN

Last night (January 7th) was our first night back in the dojo, now that the holidays are over. Oh man, Sensei Kim just loves putting people through the ringer after some time off. "Get rid of the extra weight" is always the theme for first class after a holiday, and last night was no exception.

We have another tradition in our dojo. Whenever a student (or sensei) has a birthday, the whole class honours them by doing pushups for them. The birthday boy or girl doesn't have to do the pushups. They get to count. As it turned out, a few of our *ahem* more “mature” students had birthdays during the holidays. The total number of years, and hence pushups, got rather high. We had to break it up into sets of 22, which were executed throughout the first 45 minutes of class. That should get everyone's arm muscles back in shape after the break!

The last class before Christmas was our "fun class". We let the students determine what happens during that class. They vote ahead of time for what activities they want to do. Usually it is a game class, but this year everyone decided they wanted to break boards. So, I ran off to my favourite wood supplier where I get hardwood for furniture making. This place also sells pre-cut and packaged sets of pine boards for karate clubs. Very civilized, and it saves me a ton of time cutting up planks!

The board breaking was a huge success. Everyone, from our youngest students (six years old) up to the seniors, had a jolly time making pine splinters fly. I brought a big magic marker to class to write the students' names and dates on the boards when they broke them. I thought this would be a novelty for the young students. It seems I underestimated things. I spent the entire first half of class having kids and adults alike saying "Sensei, Sensei...please write on my board!" It was all I could do to keep up.

Now that 2010 has begun there are a lot of activities being planned. We are going to be having an in-class tournament in the spring and will be performing a demonstration as well.

We also have some Shodan-ho students working hard preparing for their Shodan ranking. All in all, it should be a very busy and fun year in the dojo.

Best wishes to all of the TWKK dojos for the New Year. Please don't hesitate to contact Sensei Kim or myself if any of you are in the Halifax area this year. We love having visitors!

SENSEI LEATON BERNARD YODAN

C.O. NADIA CORRADO, 3RD KYU

TUESDAYS/THURSDAYS: 11:30AM - 12:10PM

WEDNESDAYS: 5:15PM - 6:45PM

Congratulations to Joseph G. and Nadia C. on their promotions to blue belt (2nd Kyu) on December 9, 2009.

To quote Sensei Leaton, "Joseph and Nadia are as different as a tiger and an antelope in their approach to karate – another experience that makes karate so interestingly rewarding for me as an instructor and diverse for our students. A new Karate-ka can always see a part of them in one of the existing Karate-kas. Most, if not all, students are different and progress in their own way. As Shodan-Ho Edward Davis will attest to (having assisted me in their ranking), both Nadia and Joe possess and exhibit abilities, intensity and power to defend themselves effectively and continue to grow as proficient Karate-ka."

Congratulations to Edward R. Davis on his promotion to Shodan-Ho (1st degree black belt “in training”) on November 2, 2009. Edward started his karate career with Bloor Street in mid 2005 and has been a dedicated, disciplined and respectful karate-ka from the onset. He displays excellence and enthusiasm in class effort and participation and in assisting other karate-ka and has provided invaluable assistance to Sensei Leaton. We all look forward to training and growing with Edward.

Congratulations to Kristen K. (yellow belt) and her husband Adam on the birth of their second son, Sean Cameron G. on January 2, 2010, weighing in at 8 lbs. 5 oz. We look forward to meeting this newest karate-ka – with all the kicking he did in the womb; we know that he’ll be a natural in Karate.

Congratulations to Emily S. and Marcus T. on their promotion to green belt (3rd Kyu). These are two of my youngest students at the Markham dojo and I am thankful to have them in our presence. I am constantly rewarded to be part of their growth and development, and expect continued accomplishments from them both technically in karate, as well as in character. To say that the presence of karate in our youngsters’ lives (especially in today's society) is an absolutely positive nurturing of their character and well-being is an understatement! Many thanks to Richard & Erica, and Sonia for consistently ensuring your children get to karate class along with their other activities.

I also want to thank Marcus and Kyra for their ongoing assistance, participation and support in our small dojo. You know that I appreciate you and all of the progress and accomplishments you continue to make, not only in karate, but in your school and home life. Terry H., my "adult" 15 year old Jr Shodan-Ho – I am consistently impressed by your dedication and hard work in class and in your school life! Keep up the good work.

Markham Dojo: The Markham dojo is mainly comprised of children and teenagers; so, we welcome visitors of all ages to share in the karate experience. Like at all our Wado-Kai dojos, you will be impressed with the diversity and abilities of these young practitioners. Directions are located in our organization's website.

The Markham (Grace Church) dojo resumed classes as of Tuesday, January 5, following the Christmas break. Students are encouraged to train at the other Markham area dojos – at the Thornhill Community Centre or the Unionville dojo. You are welcome to attend extra classes and a chance to train with karate-kas from another dojo. This Markham dojo generally has visitors from the Bloor Street, Unionville and Thornhill dojos.

The Markham dojo will continue with the overlapping of the children and juniors/adults classes. The interaction between both groups has proven beneficial.

Essence of training in Wado Kai Karate Excerpt from Sensei Freeman’s BWKK 35th Anniversary address

BY SENSEI FREEMAN W. THURSTON, 6TH DAN

There are many facets to martial arts training. The benefits for children lay at both the physical and mental levels. The positive effects on their overall health are far-reaching and the training is very challenging to the kids, as well as to the instructor. Increasing children’s agility and strength, as well as improving their reflexes are just a few advantages of practicing a martial art. Children have an inexhaustible reserve, seemingly ☺, of energy, and physical training provides a way to channel that energy in constructive manners. At the mental level the training improves children’s ability to concentrate. As their mind directs their body they have to be aware of what their body is doing, and focus their attention on their actions. In addition, discipline is an important element during training. During classes children have to pay attention to the instructor, listen to the instructions, and follow the rules. Respecting the instructor, other students, and themselves also results from learning a martial art. In return, they are treated with respect by others.

Improving in the art and achieving higher ranks give children a sense of accomplishment, and generate great personal confidence. Humility is always stressed, however, and is an inherent part of learning a martial art. By accepting goals for themselves and practicing hard on their own, children acquire a sense that hard work and effort are necessary for achieving their dreams. I have always stressed to students, “There ain’t no such thing as somethin’ for nothin’, you reap what you sew”, quoting one of my grandpa Zack’s favorite sayings from back in Bennett’s Harbour, Cat Island.

Teaching children requires a different approach than adults. Kids have a shorter attention span and their minds tend to wander. Consequently, classes have to be fast paced and active, for the most part. To keep a child’s interest, exercises have to be varied and sometimes just “fun”. Repetition, necessary for training, can be monotonous for a child. Children’s enthusiasm and motivation can be triggered by challenging exercises, like obstacle courses. A variety of stimulating drills keep training challenging and exciting for children, yet applicable to their improvement in the arts.

Another important facet of teaching children is to “communicate” with them. No one child should feel either preferred or neglected by the instructor. Equality and fairness in treatment is crucial. When feeling neglected, children either try to over-compensate, lose motivation, or just become a nuisance to all. On the other hand, when they are the object of too much attention, they tend to become over-confident (even a bully), and/or have disciplinary problems (a smart Alex). An encouraging, yet fair and strict approach works best. Once children know the exact parameters within which they can (must) evolve, then they are more easily trained in the “Doh”, the “Way” of the art. Here, the Sensei is most influential.

The instructor transmits his knowledge, respect and enthusiasm for the art. Children tune into their instructor’s energy, which affects their attitude and motivation. Children follow role models and, therefore, expect their teacher to be an inspiration to them, both physically and mentally. Through ample feedback and encouragement from the instructor, children can achieve their fullest potential. Hence, the instructor sets the example by his performance, attitude, and relations to others.

Kids are very malleable. The martial arts offer a means to instill in children a strong value-system while teaching them to protect themselves from physical harm. The values stressed during training, of respect, discipline, obedience, hard work, and self esteem, are invaluable for their integration into society, in addition to fostering their achievements in life. The martial arts can play a role in the children’s socialization process by implanting directions on how to relate to their family, peers, and others in general.

In summary, learning a martial art can help a child grow into a balanced, healthy and controlled individual with strong values and self-confidence.

Responsibilities of a Black Belt By Joe Fagundes, 4th Dan

There probably has never been a “new” white belt student who has walked into a dojo and not aspired to becoming a black belt some day. I still vividly remember standing at the back of Sensei Borda’s class, as a novice white belt, and looking up at the front to see how the black belts where doing things so that I may be able to emulate them…they were my motivation, and inspiration…I needed to have them there!

Black belts exemplify the virtues of karate and should be emulated by students. Black belts should be respected and should earn respect. Black belts are martial artists, but they are also leaders and teachers, whether they are aware of it or not. One would be a fool to know so much and yet not be willing to share with those whom are willing to learn.

They understand why techniques are performed, why they are taught in the manner they are, and how they and others may improve upon technique execution, application, and instruction. Students watch black belts perform techniques to learn the proper way to perform techniques. If you are a black belt, you must always perform techniques properly, no matter how tired you are. Black belts should never just go through the motions of performing a technique or pattern, they must always execute techniques and patterns with precision, power, and enthusiasm…and to do it like they mean it.

Students emulate black belts. They do not separate the black belt from the person; so, if they see a black belt outside the dojo, they see the person as a black belt, not as a regular person. Many times, black belts are noticed and watched by students outside the dojo without being aware they are being watched. This means black belts must exemplify the virtues of karate-doh at all times. Black belts must practice what they preach, at all times, inside or outside the dojo. Not only should they talk the talk, but also walk the walk. Being a black belt means you will be living an examined life, but if you are up to the challenge it will be worthwhile and rewarding. Being a black belt is an awesome responsibility, but if you are not ready to accept the responsibility, do not accept or keep the black belt.

A black belt does NOT power-trip around the dojo. He/she must set an example as to what a true black belt should be by participating at tournaments, whether competing, assisting in judging, or supporting your fellow karate-kas. It is our duty as senior belts to support those who look up to us…that is how we give back to the art that has helped us evolve into who we have become today. We need to reach out to our young karate-kas by encouraging them to do better and achieve their best.

It may be that some black belts fall into the trap of believing that once they reach a certain level in their training they have nothing left to learn. The reality of the situation, however, is that when you get your black belt (Shodan) that is when the real learning begins. In fact, my understanding, as I often tell my own students, is that you are not a “Shodan”, until you get your “Nidan”. There is so much to learn as far as techniques are concerned, but more importantly, how we carrying ourselves as a Black Belt in terms of responsibility to our fellow karate-kas and our organization as a whole. The next time you put on your gi and tie on your black belt, don’t take it for granted…stop for a second and seriously think about what that “black belt” entails. What it entails, is a way of life…pay close attention to the path, and not the pinnacle of the art because, in reality, there is no pinnacle. It is a journey that will never end, and by helping others, we help ourselves.

SECURITY OF FOCUS

FOCUS provides personal identification about adults and children including pictures to help share our experiences with one another at events happening at all our dojos.

In a small effort to help protect the identity of our karate-kas we have taken an approach of only providing first names and last initials for children under the age of 16 years.

Similarly, we are applying this approach for adults under the rank of Shodan-Ho. When providing student names in write-ups it is difficult for the editor to discern the age of a karate-ka. In the interest of erring on the side of caution, only black belt ranks will have their names in full so that the students can become familiar with their leaders.

We ask that when submitting updates about your dojos, activities and stories to keep this guideline in mind.
