Have you wondered about all the work that
has been going on in Godwin Park lately? Thoseare your city dollars at work. The Capital Im-
provement Plan went into effect putting the
renovation of your park in full swing. Carrera
Construction company broke ground in mid-
August and began busting up sidewalks and dig-
ging trenches all over the park grounds. Many
new sidewalks have been laid, new picnic tables
have been placed throughout the park and com-
memorative benches will soon be interspersed
along the shady areas of the park.Did you happen to
see the beautiful
ornate lights that
line the curving
pathway up to the
basketball court?
This upgraded
lighting was do-
nated by a gener-
ous Meyerlandresident.
And the crowning glory of the park is the
playground. Once completed, the area will con-
tain three distinct areas of play, one for infants
or pre-walkers, another for toddlers 2-5 years
old and the largest area for children 5 years and
older. A committee comprised of Melinda Cox
and Hayley Feldman from The Friends of
Godwin Park group researched and designed the
play area so that all children would have a safeand enjoyable place to play. What makes this
park different from some of the other renovated
parks in the area is the addition of shade covers
or sails above the area. The Friends of Godwin
Park raised funds to pay for this often over-
looked but very necessary protective covering.
A gazebo for picnicking is being constructed
near the playground that will provide additional
space for small gatherings and playdates. There
will be a bricked paver pathway leading up to
the gazebo. There is still time to Make your
mark on Godwin Park by purchasing a brick
paver engraved with your special sentiments for
t h e p a r k b y g o i n g t o
www.houstonparksboard.org and clicking on
support park projects for Godwin. The pro-
jected completion date is February 15, 2008 and
according to the contractor, Steve Miller, itlooks like the deadline will be met. Look for a
park dedication in early spring. Hope to see you
all out there enjoying your park!

The kids are returning to school after the holiday. So how about taking a little safety test? Drive
down your street after dark. Assuming you dont live on a corner, pass by your house at the legalspeed limit. Can you easily read your HOUSE NUMBER?
If you are asking yourself, what house number? you flunk the test. If you answered my housenumber is painted on the curb but somebody was parked in front of it you get an F. How about butI have a very expensive, custom made, estate sized, cast aluminum yard plaque and the neighborsdog keeps knocking it over. Sorry. You get an F.
Thank goodness it wasnt the Precinct 5 Constable, Houston Fire Department, ambulance or HoustonPolice responding to an emergency.

Registration Continues for Tuv HaAretz CSA at the JCC
Hazon, an organization dedicated to a healthier and more sustainable Jewish community, an-nounced that the Jewish Community Center of Houston continues its Tuv HaAretz Community Sup-ported Agriculture project, the first Jewish program of its kind for a third year. In addition, Hazonadded eight more sites across America and Canada to its fast-growing Tuv HaAretz program.
Tuv HaAretz brings together local organic farmers and Jewish organizations in order to supportsustainable agriculture and Jewish environmental education. As a member of Tuv HaAretzs Commu-nity-Supported Agriculture (CSA) youll receive 20 weeks of delicious and healthy organic produce at
competitive prices that you pick up once a week at the Jewish Community Center. By participating inTuv Haaretz it will expand the understanding of where food comes from and how to eat seasonally.Additionally, CSA relationships provide hands-on educational opportunities for families.

All of the Meyerland sections have two (2)representatives on the Board of Directors with theexception of any Section with one hundred (100) orfewer members which will have one (1) Directorrepresenting any such Section. The Section Direc-tors shall be elected by the members from within theMeyerland section in which they reside. The Direc-tors shall be elected for two (2) year terms. In order
to be eligible for election as a Director, a candidatemust live in a Meyerland residence which he/sheowns and not be delinquent in the payment of anyAssociation charges, assessments, or taxes.

Id heard about the MCIA Board for the past 20 plus years but had sadly never attended a meeting.
It wasnt until Bob Marshall, long time community activist and friend, called and asked me to considerfilling a vacated term. Being a Mom and small business owner takes time and effort, and one more ac-tivity was not in my plans. Hesitantly, I agreed to serve. Im glad I did because now I know first handwhat is going on in my neighborhood and can be an active voice to make it a better community.
The Board members, current and past, have made Meyerland one of the safest and welcoming com-munities in all of Houston. Deed restrictions are enforced, our crime rate is one of the lowest and thepeople are friendly! Being a Board member you really get a feel for what it takes to make a commu-nity a neighborhood.
Whatever your interests are for community safety and improvement, there is a place for you withMCIA. Whether its on the Board or serving on one of the many committees. I encourage anyonewho wants to really know whats going on in our neighborhood and work for positive change to checkit out.
I was elected to the board in March 2007. At that time, my daughter was 9 months old and I had justreturned to work outside the home. I was probably the least likely candidate for being a board memberfor the Meyerland Community Improvement Association. But when Cyndi Ruiz Mansfield, currentboard member and friend through the Meyerland Mothers of Young Children group, encouraged me to
run, and I saw how busy she was with a young child and thriving law practice, I thought, If she can doit, so can I! I became a board member for the following main reasons:
Fiscal responsibility - Like most residents, I did not know much about how our annual assessmentswere spent until joining the Board. I wanted to make sure that our dues money was spent in a fiscallyresponsible manner that directly benefited as many residents as possible.
Neighborhood Beautification Meyerland is an attractive, mature neighborhood with rising home val-ues, good schools, and successful businesses. However, I felt that some parts of the infrastructure, likesidewalks, parks, and tree maintenance, could be improved. Being on theBoard has given me a chance to participate in beautification efforts.
Volunteerism I felt that I could lend my skills in information technology
to modernize some of the Boards practices.Since joining the Board, Ive been involved in the security notification
system committee with colleagues David Naff and Bill Wong. I am alsothe wizard behind the curtain for the Meyerland web site makeover. I
look forward to helping out with the Afternoon in the Park event next year.
Being a Board member has been a rewarding and not too-tiring experience. I encourage anyone inter-ested in becoming a Board member to attend one of the monthly Board meetings and consider runningin the next election. We always need fresh interest and talent!

OUR LOCAL SCHOOL NEWS
The week at Herod Elementary School began with
Cheer day where each classroom developed a school or
class cheer. Spirit week coordinator and second grade
teacher, Shauna Oakes remarked, A school with spirit
is a school united. Tuesday was Decoration Day
where the students showed their spirit by decorating
their classroom door. On Wednesday, the faculty, staff
and students all wore orange and blue celebrating the
school colors. On Thurs-
day, Get Pinned Day, the
students each pledged to
work for success and
received a Herod Jet to
Success pin. Friday was
the first annual Spirit
Day at Herod Elemen-
tary and the winner of the Cheer Competition was an-
nounced at the school-wide assembly, culminating the
week of celebration and pageantry. The overall school
class winners were Ms. Cadell for the primary grades
and Ms. Fluit from the upper
grades. A special award was also
given to the entire first grade for
overall school spirit by grade
level. Herod is proud of all of
their Jets!

The whole world is preparing for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, and at Kolter, studentscelebrated the upcoming event with a Winter Program. The Kolter Elementary stage was alive withbright colors and pleasing sounds as the 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students presented the history of theOlympics.
The five rings of the Olympic symbol stand for commitment, respect, integrity, appreciation andcooperation. With these virtues in mind, the children wrote, prepared, and performed a variety ofskits, pantomime, songs and dances to highlight moments from the Paris, 1900, Tokyo, 1964, Mex-ico, 1968, and Barcelona, 1992 Olympic games. Chinese skits and dances created excitement andwonder for the upcoming games in China. The evening ended with a delightful rendition of "TheMore We Get Together," sung by the 1st graders.

Ms. Christina Gutierrez, art teacher at Johns-
ton Middle School, has announced the results of
the Fire Prevention Contest and the Safe and
Drug-Free Poster Contest.
In the Fire Prevention Contest, Johnston stu-
dents placed 1st, 2nd, and continued the sweep
with 3rd place! Ethan Orkin placed 1st in the sixth
grade division!
In the Drug-Free Poster Contest, another stu-
dents work surpassed all other HISD entries and
placed third overall! This student, along with her
teacher, Ms. Christina Gutierrez, and Johnston
Middle School Principal, Dave Wheat, were hon-ored at a ceremony on October 31, 2007.
In the Super Character-Super You Art Con-
test, sponsored by the Houston Partnership for
Character in HISD, middle school students were
encouraged to creatively express the importance
of good characterwhat it looks like, what it acts
like, and/or the value character adds to their like
and others. Johnston student, Dean Melloul
placed 2nd and Whitney Johnson and one other
student received Honorable Mention Certificates.
We applaud the work of the Johnston Art de-
partment as they continue to showcase their tal-
ents this year!

I hope your holidays were festive and filled with comfort and joy. Traditionally, all my family
meet at my house for Thanksgiving and I play hostess to approximately 16-18 adults and 3-4 rambunc-
tious toddlers. First, let me admit, I am no Martha Stewart, but I do make sure my house is clean and
coordinate all the details for the event. To make life easier for me, family members bring a dish and I
order the rest, including the turkeys (not a turkey big enough to feed my entire family). Each year I
add chairs to the table so that all the adults can sit together. I also set up the childrens table in the
same room. The room looks quite nice filled with family and more food than we can eat. So what
happened this year? As we were all enjoying ourselves, a neighbor is seen walking her dog, a lab
(well call him Rex for the sake of anonymity), and Rex decides to deposit on my lawn on the
grass between the sidewalk and curb right in front of my guests vehicles. So, my cousin, who is the
joker of our group, points out that Rex is taking care of business and worse, it appears my neighboris going to leave us this present! Everyone at our table continues watching to see if Rexs owner is go-
ing to obey the pooper scooper law. Yes, there is a law! According to Section 6-24 of the Code of
Ordinances for the City of Houston,
pet owners must remove all fecal material deposited by their pets on property they do not own,
including neighbors' yards, city parks, school property, public rights-of-way, etc.A person in
control of a dog or cat must promptly remove and dispose of, in a sanitary manner, feces left
by their dog or cat, when walking outside of your own yard .Each person in control of the
dog or cat must have materials to remove feces left by their dog or cat when they are off their
own property. Violation of this section is punishable upon conviction by a fine of not less than$75 or more than $500. Each violation of this section is a separate offense.
Unfortunately, my neighbor did not obey the law and my cousin decided to let her know she was
busted. He knocked on the window and yelled, Lady, your forgetting something! She heard the
knocking and hurried off. I am sure she was embarrassed, but not enough to come back with a baggie
and pick it up. Instead, my guests had to be careful not to step in it as they were leaving our Thanks-
giving celebration.
I like my neighbors, all my neighbors, and I believe the vast majority of Meyerlanders do not let
their dogs (big or small) make deposits on neighbors lawns and pick it up if
and when it does occur. However, the problem does exist. So, we all have to
remember some etiquette when it comes to our cats and dogs. Meyerland resi-

DOGS AND CATS - LICENSE REQUIRED
Pet owners within the city limits must license their pet. There is a limit ofthree dogs over the age of six months per household. A license tag will beissued only after proof of rabies vaccination has been provided. The petmust wear this tag at all times. A replacement tag costs $2. Pet ownerswho fail to license pets within 30 days after rabies vaccination will besubject to a $10 penalty. . SIDEWALKS
Walks in front of residences are not the City of Houstons responsibility. The resident is respon-sible for such walks. There are many cracked and dangerous walks throughout Meyerland.Please consider repairing or replacing the walks in front of your residence and dont forget to sub-
mit your form for construction to ACC before start of project. Forms are available in pdf formatat www.meyerland.net or call the MCIA office at (713)729-2167. Currently the ACC requiressidewalks be repaired and/or replaced, if necessary, in conjunction with any major renovations toyour residence.
Trees between sidewalk and street
Trees planted between the sidewalk and street are on City of Houston Street Right-of-Way. To cut down a tree on a public right-of-way, you must have City of Houston andMCIA approval before removing. Call (713) 729-2167 (MCIA) & City of Houston For-estry Division (311 will transfer you to them). Any tree larger than 1 caliper is consid-ered a protected tree and can be removed only if it is in the way of a proposed drive orutility. It must then be replaced by new trees at some other location on the property.
Meyerland Section 5 Restrictions Renewal
The value of your property has steadily increased over the years and is presently at an all time
high. This is due primarily to the deed restrictions established years ago and rigorously enforcedby your Meyerland Community Improvement Association and the Meyerland Architectural Com-mittee (ACC).
For Section 5 residences, the deed restrictions presently applicable to your home and lot were re-corded in October 1982. Over the ensuing 25 years we have experienced changes in our city andneighborhood that have an impact on us and warrant amending the restrictions to bring them up todate. Other sections have been brought up to date.
To gain approval, two thirds of the lot owners in Section 5 must signify their approval by signingthe approval form in the presence of a notary and returning it to the MCIA office. A packet of theexiting restrictions and proposed restrictions and notarized signature sheet have been delivered toeach lot owner in Section 5.
If you are unable to go to a notary, we will schedule a notary to come to your home at your con-venience. Please call MCIA at (713) 729-2167 to arrange a suitable time. We urge you to reviewand approve the Amended Deed Restrictions for Section 5. Our goal is to have the required ap-proval of the lot owners by February 1, 2008.

The Staff and Board continue to work hard to maintain Meyerland as a most desirable place to live.This work bears fruit as evidenced by the fast turnover in the housing market and the increase in new
home construction in Meyerland.
Annual Statements
Each homeowner should have received the 2008 Statement that was mailed the last week of Decem-ber 2007. The Maintenance Fee and The Security Assessment remain the same as last year (2.1123cents per square foot of lot area and $165 per lot respectively) however, there is a one time Mainte-nance Fee rebate of 0.1446 per square foot of lot area for the unintended over collection that occurredin 2006 and 2007. This results in a net rate for 2008 of 1.9677 cents per square foot of lot area. Pleasereturn your payment by January 31, 2008.
Restriction Renewals
We continue to revise and update our restrictions. Presently, Section 5 is going through the renewalprocess. We encourage those residents in Section 5 to review the changes that were provided and ifthere are any questions call the office or the Section Directors Rudy Michalk and Don Carter.Please return the signed Notary page to the office as soon as possible.
Security
Please call the Constable at 281-463-6666 to report suspicious or criminal activity. You should alsocall that number to request a vacation watch. Also, store this number in your cell phone for quick use.
Lawn Clippings and Trash
As I drive the neighborhood, I notice many bags of lawn clippings at the curb on days other thanTuesday (the normal pick up day). Some are out on the day after normal pickup and remain out untilthe following week! Residents have become very lax in this area and the office receives numerouscomplaints about this problem. Please remove these bags to the rear of your houses, out of site, untilthe next scheduled pickup day.
Another area that generates calls is trash (food wrappings etc.) that is lyingaround. If you see such trash, please pick it up and deposit it in your trashcontainers.
