Recently, a parishioner came up to me and asked a question about the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday. I thought it might be a good idea to talk about this question here.

A generation or two ago, we went to Mass because we were told to do it. Whether that command came from Mom or Grandma, or from the parish priest, we were told to do it, and we obeyed. Then came the 60s and 70s, and the rallying cry “question authority!”, and sometimes, we didn’t always get a concise, understandable answer to the question “why do I have to go to Mass?”

On one hand, part of the answer lies in the fact that God wishes to have a relationship with us as His children, and part of that relationship consists of us coming together as a community in order to lift up our voices to Him in unison

in prayer, worship, and praise. It’s particularly important to do this on Sunday, as we celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection, through which our salvation is made possible!

Does that mean that any kind of gathering is sufficient? (After all, we could gather in a local coffee shop and pray – would that be what God is asking us to do?) Actually, Jesus asks something additional of us: at the Last Supper, when Jesus celebrated the Eucharist for the first time, he told us to “do this in memory of Me.” So, our Sunday gathering takes the form of a Eucharistic celebration, in which we all participate.

Each of us, in our baptism, is made a “priest, prophet, and king” in God’s kingdom. The role of a priest is to offer sacrifice, in order to make people holy. So, when we gather for Mass, our liturgy is a dialogue between the celebrant, the congregation, and God. Your role, as baptized Catholics, is a critical part of the Liturgy!

So… why do have to go to Mass? The Church asks us whether we take our relationship with Christ and His Church seriously, and if we do, then it reminds us that participation in the Sunday Liturgy is a critical way that we express our commitment to our relationship to Christ and to one another. Blessings, Fr Larry

In RCIA/RCIC, we have now entered the learning stage called the Period of the Catecheumenate. During the next several weeks, our three catechumens will consider what God is saying to them in Scripture, what

changes they need to make in their lives to respond to God's call and what Baptism in the Catholic Church means. Our Team is working closely with our catechumens to present and teach them about the sacraments, the Creed, morality and the Scrip-tures. Their next formal step will be their Rite of Election at the Cathedral in March. Please keep our catechumens and the team in your continued prayers.

Interested in doing more service in our local community? Please consider joining in one of the volunteer efforts of the Service and Outreach Committee—Angels’ Place. It is a resource and daycare facility for young parents and their children. Help is needed in the kitchen. Clearances are required. If you are already a parish volunteer with clearances, simply submit or obtain copies. These can be used at

Angels’ Place. Angels’ Place can also help you with the clearance process. If you are interested, please contact Debbie Retenauer at 412-241-4101.
