A Note from Fr. Sean, Uniting in Heart and Catholic Ministries Appeal (Hearts on Fire) Two Distinct Yet Related Initiatives
Sometimes when a company rolls out a new brand or a new product there might be some
confusion. Perhaps the new product is confused with an existing product, and sometimes a
product is confused with something else the company already does, especially if there is an
effort to create a consistent brand within multiple projects. Church life is no different.
I’ve been reviewing the data from the Our Sunday Visitor survey and it appears that there is confusion among some
people telling the difference between the Uniting in Heart 2030 Pastoral Plan and the Catholic Ministries Appeal
Hearts on Fire Campaign. I have also encountered this in conversations with people as well. These initiatives will be a
big part of our lives for quite some time so we need to understand the terms.
Uniting in Heart 2030 (UIH) is the pastoral plan for the diocese. It is Bishop Doherty’s vision for the next ten years.
It highlights three concentration areas, or pillars: mission, community, witness. Here at Sacred Heart we are in the
process of developing our own pastoral plan to align with the diocesan plan. UIH is all about focusing our attention
and energy on the mission of the Church: To preach the Good News of Jesus Christ to the world.
Why do we need a plan to do that? The mission of the Church is not always clear to people. If you ask ten Catholics
what the mission of the Church is, you’ll get fifteen answers. This is why our leaders cast a vision, and do so by
means of a pastoral plan to provide the guiding principles for our work, and even to define that work. For instance,
evangelization, catechetics and apologetics are all distinct disciplines and work within the Church, though most
people tend to lump them together. UIH focuses us on evangelization, the sharing of the Gospel.
On to the next thing: Hearts on Fire is this year’s theme for the Catholic Ministries Appeal, which is itself the new
name for what used to be called Fruitful Harvest. Just like Fruitful Harvest had a theme each year, so does the
Catholic Ministries Appeal. Why the name change? The name was changed to focus on what the appeal supported,
namely Catholic ministries at the diocesan level, and also, it will now be an annual campaign instead of a biennial
appeal.
There’s a lot of new terms and a lot of change all at once. We’re trying our best to keep people informed. I wanted to
write about this so that people know what it is we are doing and why.
Yours in Christ,
(CMA)
