The Fleet’s mission is to realize a San Diego where everyone is connected to

the power of science.


More than 2,500 middle and high school students explore local careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at the Fleet Science Center’s annual High Tech Fair. The event allows students to explore the real-life application of the science they learn in their classrooms to a career in a science- and technology-related industry.

The 2018 Fair saw attendance from approximately 40 San Diego-area schools, 75% of which were Title 1 schools serving a large number of minority students. The event was sponsored by Qualcomm, Solar Turbines, Northrop Grumman, BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin, SDG&E and UTC Aerospace Systems. More than 30 companies participated, including the Center for Energy Research, the City of San Diego, General Atomics, NOAA, SPAWAR and UCSD, representing industries with a focus in aerospace and defense, biotech, energy and sustainability, environmental science, higher education, technology and finance.

Through interactive activities at each booth, students applied scientific concepts in an e¡ort to learn more about the opportunities available to them as they pursue their future careers.

Parents and teachers praised the Fleet’s ability to connect students to the industries of their interest.

“I loved that my students didn’t just have to look at brochures or talk with people, but that they could gain access to understanding the what and how and why of the companies through fun activities,” said one local teacher. Planning for the 2019 High Tech Fair is currently underway, and the Fleet is looking to expand its o¡erings. “We are hoping to make this year bigger and better than ever with more exhibitors, more student work representation and more ways to interact via social media,” says Ivel Gontan, Community Programs Senior Manager for the Fleet Science Center. “Exhibitors will also be able to highlight available internship opportunities, so we hope to strengthen the community connections between studentsand local STEM organizations.”

Because San Diego is home to many di¡erent industries that specialize in science and technology, grooming the next generation of scientists is of the utmost importance. The High Tech Fair is instrumental in exposing students to the opportunities that exist right in their own backyard. Through initiatives like this, the Fleet is helping to create a San Diego where everyone is connected to the power of science.

The Fleet Science Center’s annual High Tech Fair connects 2,500 middle and high school students with industry leaders and gives students highly-engaging learning experiences in order to inspire them to pursue education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

This year’s free, two-day event takes place at the Balboa Park Activity Center. The evening of January 17 is open to the public and is geared toward 7th to 12th grade students and their parents. The following day, students and teachers from local middle and high schools will be bussed to the event throughout the day.

Corporations in the fields of biotechnology, energy and clean technology, conservation and environment, aerospace and engineering, information technology (IT), healthcare and robotics, among others, o¡er hands-on demonstrations and experiences to showcase how they utilize STEM concepts in their mission and products. As this is a technology fair, participating organizations are encouraged to bring interactive activities that clearly explain their companies’ technologies.

Universities, San Diego City departments and other nonprofit organizations are also active sponsors and participants in the Fleet’s High Tech Fair, encouraging students interested in higher education and local careers in STEM fields. Sponsorships cover all costs to ensure that this event remains entirely free for schools, students, teachers and parents. To remove barriers, transportation and reimbursements for substitute teachers are provided for participating San Diego public schools. These reimbursements enable the Fleet to serve as many students as possible during the two-day event.

J. CRAIG VENTER INSTITUTEJCVI showcased information on their previous and current projects. Students participated in a short DNA activity and were given information on internship opportunities as well as career paths in the STEM fields.

BIRCH AQUARIUMThis booth highlighted the three di¡erent categories of algae as well as their respective uses. Alginate (ground-up algae) was also brought in to demonstrate how the consistency changes when water is added.

ENERGY COALITIONParticipants at this booth explored circuits, insulators and conductors while experimenting with simple circuits to light up a light bulb. Various common items were introduced into the circuit to test for electrical conductivity.

GENERAL ATOMICS ENERGY/FUSION GROUPThe GA booth highlighted states of matter, magnetism and electromagnetic radiation. Attendees interacted with floating magnets, electrical sparks, liquid nitrogen, shot an air cannon and more.

NORTHROP GRUMMAN Northrop Grumman showcased new tech advances in the areas of cyber, logistics, autonomous systems, advanced electronics, C4ISR, commercial aviation and military defense. Attendees made a laser-cut name badge and experienced VR simulation. 3 5
