BioSketch: Felicia Knaul, MA, PhD (Economics, Harvard University), is Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Harvard Global Equity Initiative where she serves as the Co director of the Secretariat for the Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries, an initiative she helped found in 2009 and for which she is lead author and Editor of Closing the Cancer Divide available as a report (English, Spanish and Russian) and a book distributed by Harvard University Press in 2012. She is also Senior Economist at the Mexican Health Foundation where she has led a research group focused on health and the economy since 2000. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007, Dr. Knaul founded Cáncer de Mama: Tómatelo a Pecho a Mexican civil society organization that promotes research, advocacy, awareness, and early detection initiatives for breast cancer in Latin America. She has published articles on the topic of breast cancer in low and middle income countries in academic journals, lectures extensively on the topic both from the point of view of a patientadvocate and a health systems researcher, and has been featured in magazines including Science. Her book recounting her personal experience with breast cancer and as founder of a civil society organization in Mexico, was released as Tómatelo a Pecho in 2009 (2nd edition, 2011), and expanded and published in English in 2012 through Harvard University Press titled Beauty without the Breast. Dr. Knaul has more than 130 academic and policy publications including journal articles in English and Spanish, book chapters and books. In 2012, she led the publication in The Lancet of a major review of the Mexican health system reform, following on chairing a Lancet working group and resulted in a series of publications 2006. She also led the production of reports for the Mexican government and participated in the World Health Report 2000. Her research is focused on cancer in developing countries, health system reform, health financing and poverty, women and health and children in especially difficult circumstances. She holds a visiting academic appointment at the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico and is a board member of numerous organizations including: the Union for International Cancer Control; the International Advisory Board on Cancer, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center; the Electronic Living Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Cancer Survivorship Research at Princess Margaret Hospital; the HarvardMexico Foundation; the Jalisco Cancer Institute; and the Sheikh M. Hussein AlAmoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer in Saudi Arabia. She has held senior government posts at the Ministries of Education and Social Development of Mexico and at the Department of Planning of Colombia, and worked for multilateral agencies including WHO, the World Bank, the InterAmerican Development Bank, and UNICEF.
