HOLY FAMILY DAY SCHOOL ART EXHIBIT:National Catholic Schools Week:

During the last week of January, the Day School will celebrate National Catholic Schools week and hold our Annual Student Art Exhibit. This event leads up to our open enrollment weekend for the 2017-2018 school year. Registration opens to currently enrolled families first to ensure continuity for the following year. Then, on the weekend of February 4/5, registration will open to the Parish to give you access to the limited student spaces created by Day school’s low student to teacher ratios. The excellent staff, whole child development philosophy, and Christian environment create a highly sought after, individualized school where children come first.Shortly after Parish registration, we will open our roster to the public if space permits. If you would like to schedule a tour in January, please call the office at 757-481-1180. The Day School offers class from 8:30-11:30 a.m. for students ages 30 months through Kindergarten. STRENGTHENING OUR PARISHES THROUGH THE LIVING OUR MISSION CAMPAIGN:

An Excerpt from theUpcoming Living Our Mission Annual Report

Parishes are realizing profound and long-term benefits from the Living Our Mission capital and endowment campaign. The parishes will retain the majority of the funds raised, an estimated $64,967,000 of the nearly $103,952,000 raised, or 62.5%. To date, the Diocese has returned over $26,168,831 to the parishes through nine rounds of funding.

Parishes will use these funds in a variety of ways, including local construction projects, ministries, endowments and debt reduction. The key statistics below highlight how parishes are using their Living Our Mission money:

139 parishes plan to use the money raised for construction or repairs

42 parishes will fund ministries and outreach programs

23 parishes are saving for the future by placing funds into endowments

16 parishes allocated funds to reduce debt

Parish Construction and Repair Projects – By The Numbers:

$55,432,000 of the money raised is for new construction or repairs to existing buildings (The true impact is even larger. The actual cost of construction in the 139 parishes approaches $77 million.)

$9,172,000 is the largest construction project funded by the campaign - - St. Bede, Williamsburg

23 parish construction projects exceed $1 million

13 parishes are building new churches or making significant renovations to worship space

6 parishes addressed emergency repairs to their building

As may be seen from the highlights above, the Living Our Mission campaign is providing critical funding in strategic ways. Income from the larger endowments of the Church provide a stable source of support for our clergy and other ministries which reduces the reliance on parish assessments – a direct benefit to the parishes.

“If it weren’t for the Living Our Mission campaign, new and/or increased parish assessments would have been needed in order to address these financial challenges,” stated Michael J. McGee, Diocesan Chief Financial Officer.

Overall, this effort has brought about stronger parishes and a stronger Diocese – better positioned to advance the mission, through Word, Worship, Community and Service.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP 101:It is a time to weep, to cry, even to smile and to laugh. It is a time to remember a loved one who has died and, we believe in faith, has been welcomed home by our loving Father. It is a time to tell the many stories of our loved one and how they may have affected our lives. It is a time to know that your grief is healthy, and needs to be expressed. With this idea in mind, we will begin our Grief Support Group in January, where I trust you will find a safe place to honor the memories of your loved one. The first session was Thursday, January 12. The next session on Thursday, January 26, will be at the home of Karen Dixon. We will meet at Holy Family at 6:30 p.m. and proceed to Karen’s house, for a “get acquainted with the program’s format” and outline the rest of the sessions. This will be followed by a potluck meal provided by Karen. You just need to bring yourself. The next two dates will be as follows: Thursday, February 9, and Thursday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m., at Holy Family. The sessions will end at 8:00 p.m. There are ten sessions and the dates of the rest of the meetings will be determined by the group. If you would like to attend, and so we have an accurate account, please call Chaplain Jim Fedor at 481-5702. Please call if you have any questions.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”There has been much media coverage about the Standing Rock pipeline. This pipeline would carry oil through North Dakota and a few other states, threatening farms, wildlife habitats, the WATER supply, and sacred Native American tribal sites. For over 100 days the Standing Rock Sioux tribe, joined by other tribes and groups, have been persistently conducting a peaceful demonstration to prevent the pipeline construction on its proposed route, in spite of the severe weather and the tactics employed by the military to turn them away.We in Hampton Roads are familiar with pipeline construction since we are facing the possibility of the Atlantic Coast pipeline and the dangers that could accompany it. We can help the well-being of our Earth and the Standing Rock demonstrators as they fight these human rights violations by keeping them in our thoughts and prayers, by contacting our legislators to voice our opposition to this project, and, if we are able, by sending financial aid (Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, #1 N. Standing Rock Ave., Fort Yates, N.D. 58538).Ed Marroni – 587-4887 – [email protected]
