THANK YOU! The Little Ones of Aberdeen thank you for your generous items during the Advent baby shower. These wonderful gifts have gone to Avera St. Luke’s Birthplace and Child Protection Services. God Bless you all!

I was clearing some old mail and paperwork off my desk this morning (Fr. Lichter and the parish staff might tell you I never clear anything off my desk, but that’s a slight exaggeration). Some of the paperwork included our diocesan coat of arms. I’m sure you have seen the coat of arms of the Diocese of Sioux Falls before, on posters or stationary and in the Bishop’s Bulletin. It’s that blue-and-white shield with a bishop’s mitre on top. The diocese uses it sort of like a business might use a logo, but it’s much more than a logo.

Every diocese in the country has a coat of arms, and so do many other Catholic institutions. In the tradition of heraldry, the coat of arms should tell you something about the diocese, or university, or monastery, or convent. Ours, for example, has wavy blue lines on a blue background. The wavy lines indi-cate the water of the Missouri River, which forms the western and southern boundaries of the diocese. Our first diocesan seat was in Yankton, a town right on the Missouri River.

Superimposed on the wavy lines is a serpent coiled around a staff, which is a reference to Numbers 21. Numbers 21 tells how, during their wandering in the desert, the Israelite people complained about the monotony of eating manna every day. As a conse-quence of this ingratitude, many of the people are bit-ten by poisonous serpents and are dying. The people repent, and God instructs Moses to make a bronze im-age of the serpent and place it on a pole. All who look at the serpent are healed from the poison and saved. Jesus himself identified the bronze serpent as a prefig-uring of his crucifixion. He said to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who be-lieves in him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15).

The last final part of the coat of arms, the mi-ter, is carried over from earlier days. At one time, mi-ters appeared atop the coats of arms of bishops, ab-bots, and dioceses, but the use of mitres in Catholic heraldry was suppressed in 1969. Bishops and abbots now display a pilgrim’s hat called a galero above their arms. However, dioceses that historically displayed a miter above their arms were allowed to continue the practice. So the next time you see our diocesan coat of arms, think of it as more than just a logo. The symbols on the coat of arms tell a story, a story about a diocese erected on the eastern bank of the Missouri River to preach the message of Christ’s sacrifice to eastern South Dakota.

St. Anthony and St. Augustine Parish are chartering a 57-passenger bus to take area “Pro-Lifers” to the Hour of Reflection and Life Chain Walk. This will be the 46th Annual Hour of Reflection to be held in the capi-tol rotunda in Pierre with Governor Kristi Noem be-ing this year’s keynote speaker beginning at 2:00 pm. So, please mark your calendars and plan to at-tend this very special event. Those interested in rid-ing the bus … the bus will head back from Pierre at 3:30 pm. (More information concerning the bus schedule will be in next week’s bulletin.)
