OUR LADY OF SORROWS MISSION STATEMENT We are Catholic Christians of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish who are conscious of the
plan of God for the salvation of all. We praise the Lord in our everyday lives by sharing our faith and talents with each other for the continued growth of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Community. We wish to live the Beatitudes of Jesus and put them
into practice in our daily lives as we answer His call to evangelization.
Let God In
Our depressive, anxious, stressful feel-ings are sometimes the result of our putting our psycho-logical and spiritual “hands” around something less than God.
Baptism of the Lord
Today the Church celebrates the So-lemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiph-any which occurred on the occasion
of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes.
In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany be-cause at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto our-selves," He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world."
Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's bap-tism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.
— Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas.
Tough Times???
God will help you through whatever tough times you face. “God is faithful and will not let you be tried beyond your strength; but with the trial He will also provide a way out, so that you may be able to bear it.” ( 1 Corinthians 10:13) Lean on Him.
We welcome to our par ish community Jonathan C. Ruiz who was baptized De-cember 20th, 2015 in our Church. Much
peace and happiness to the proud parents and family members!
The Waters of Baptism
When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jor-dan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partak-ing in the rite of the baptism or repentance, Jesus identifies himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new mem-bers onto his Body, the Church; through these waters wee cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.
“Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take nothing that you have received—-only what you have given.” ~St. Francis of Assisi
IF NOT NOW, WHEN?
John the Baptist, in his role as a wandering prophet, drew large crowds. He declared it was not enough to be born Jewish; everyone needed to repent and be washed clean of their sins. When he baptized Jesus (MARK 1:7-11), the appearance of the Holy Spirit that followed showed who Jesus really is. It marked a new reality. Baptism is now a symbol of death and rebirth to new life, while the gift of the Holy Spirit confers power on believers to live as chil-dren of God. After Jesus’ resurrection, the apostles contin-ued to baptize and confirm in his name. Think about this! God has given us the means to lice as God’s own sons and daughters, with the hope of eternal life. Our response re-quires effort, persistence, sacrifice, and selflessness. The enemy of the life of faith is not unbelief, but apathy. We get tired of trying. But a life with Christ says it not now, when? If not you, who else?
