THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD EL BAUTIZO DEL SENOR

    From Rick Hardy Pastoral Associate

    Water

Our body is about 60% water. The brain and heart are

about 73% water, and the lungs are 83%. But ironically,

if you get too much water in your lungs, you are at risk of

almost immediate death. Even our bones are 31% water.

No wonder we are drawn to water in so many ways!

Waterfront dining, property, recreation, all are prized

by a great many people. Even winter sports, like skiing,

skating, snowmobiling and ice fishing, depend on water.

Water is also where Baptism takes place. On today’s

Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we celebrate Jesus’s

own Baptism in the Jordan River. John was baptizing peo-

ple before there were any Christians. John’s baptism was a

sign of repentance for sin. It was a fresh start for someone

who desire to leave old ways behind and begin life anew.

So, as a sign of repentance for sin, what is Jesus doing,

being baptized? He certainly had no sin for which to repent.

He didn’t need conversion. But he was about to start a new

chapter in His life. From the anonymity of his upbringing in

Nazareth, Jesus would, from this point forward, minister in

public: teaching, healing, forgiving sins, ultimately suffering

and dying for what he taught, and finally rising from death

into new and glorious life at the right hand of His Father.

For us, Baptism is also a new start, but not exactly the

same as it was for Jesus. Baptism uses water for two

things: First, to symbolize washing away the “stain” of Orig-

inal Sin and offering a new beginning of hope and faith to

lead us more and more deeply into the Reign of God, both

in this life and the next.

Second, the water of Baptism symbolizes dying and ris-

ing — under the water, we would die in only a few minutes.

Rising from this symbolic grave into our new life, we imitate

and remember Jesus’s own rising from the tomb.

Baptism is so significant, and so life-changing, that it can

never be repeated. Even Baptism in another Christian faith,

as long as it is done with water and the words “in the name

of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” is rec-

ognized by the Catholic Church and is not repeated as if it

were not valid the first time. In Baptism we become a new

creation, leaving behind an old life and embracing a new

    one.

There’s more to Baptism than the water. There’s also

the new clothing — we are clothed in white after emerging

from the water, as a further sign of our newness, our new

    purity of heart and spirit.

In our life as a Baptized Catholic Christian, we receive

not only a fresh start, a new white garment, and, nowadays,

a candle to commemorate the occasion, but also a rightful

place in the Body of Christ, the Church.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD EL BAUTIZO DEL SENOR

Gospel Meditation Rick Hardy’s note continued here

We have the right (and responsibility) to celebrate the

Eucharist along with the other members of the Body and

with the priest as the vicar of Christ, who is the head of the

Body. We have the right (and the responsibility) to serve

others in the name of Christ, in the framework of ministry

within the Church and to those in the larger community. We

have a relationship with God, as His child and as a brother

or sister to Christ, with rights and responsibilities that are

real and consequential. We have a new name: Christian.

Baptism is the way we enter the Church for the first time.

We recall our Baptism when we touch water on our way into

the worship space and sign ourselves with the sign of

Christ. We celebrate our common Baptism throughout the

year, when, on occasion, we are sprinkled with its water so

that we remember where we came from and who we are

called to be. And when God calls us to Himself at the end

of this life, we are sprinkled for the last time with the water

of Baptism at the entrance to the church, where our broth-

ers and sisters in the Church will celebrate the life, death,

and resurrection of Christ, and the ways our life calls them

    to celebrate this great promise.

In other words, Baptism is huge! It is literally a once-in-

a-lifetime event that lasts a lifetime and changes everything,

    if we allow it.

With respect and caution, I must say that the physical

space of St. Peter’s has not represented the importance of

Baptism too well in recent years. The Baptismal Font, a

small bowl on a stand, has not been visible at all in recent

years, and before that, it was covered and held no water

unless a Baptism was about to take place.

The “fonts” at the entrances, offering a half-cup of water

or less, provided the touch of water, but not much of a sym-

bol of the magnitude of the sacrament that makes us Catho-

    lic Christians for life.

All of that is about to change.

The new Baptismal Font at St. Peter’s will remind us of

our Baptism. It will offer the sight, the sound (very little

sound!), and the touch of water. Each one of us will pass it

on our way in and out of the church, as it will be present

along the only path of entry and exit (except for emergency

    exits, of course.)

Adults baptized in the new font will get significantly wet,

though not immersed. It will take significant preparation to

use the new font for adults. Infants will be baptized from a

large bowl attached to the main font, for a more managea-

ble experience. And the assembly will be able to see the

entire experience from most if not all positions in the

    church.

Next week, more about the scope, form, and back-

ground of our new Baptismal Font.

    The Baptism of the Lord

We need history. We need it in order to understand our-

selves, personally and collectively. The pieces of our histo-

ries may not have always been the most positive, honest,

exemplary, dignified, proud and best moments of our lives,

but they are ours. We have to acknowledge, remember, ac-

cept, and often heal them. We cannot forget them or pretend

that they never existed. As horrible as the atrocities of events

like Auschwitz, brutal injustices committed throughout the

human journey, or personal painful experiences in our own

stories, we need to remember. These times when humanity

in general or people in particular have lost their way are

times that need to be reconciled and redeemed.

If we lose the memories, we will make the same mistakes

again. The human soul needs a strong sense of affirmation,

direction, and clear purpose. Without these essentials, we

will easily run amuck and repeat the sins of our past. God’s voice throughout history has spoken precisely about this! We

are reminded through the voices and example of many

prophets and witnesses not to make the same mistakes

again, come back to center, discover the purpose given to us

by God, maintain a sense of proper direction, seek healing

for wounds and be reconciled to our Creator.

Baptism is so incredibly important for the salvation of human-

kind, not only eternally but here and now. Our existence de-

pends upon it. It gives us the affirmation we need from God

by gifting us with the same intimate relationship Jesus had

with the Father. We are blessed with the direction and clear

purpose we need in order to be productive stewards and

faithful Christians. Baptism calls us to remember, accept, and

deal with the sins and inequities of our past regardless of

how hurtful and serious. We consciously choose to turn away

from them and put on the new life of Christ. To do this well,

we must look hard and long at our sins and failings, listen to

what they are saying and learn from them. If we ignore the

past, collectively or personally, or pretend that it never hap-

    pened, we will never

    grow. We will surely die.

    People need to hear

    the message, lived

    and spoken, delivered

    by the baptized mem-

    bers of the Body of

    Christ. It is an essen-

    tial message of hope

that is layered with visions of justice, peace, reconciliation,

redemption, blessing, and healing. It is a message that helps

us remember what has gone before, the graces and the sins,

and bring ourselves by God’s help where we need to be. We

are called to do much more than sit home behind our closed

doors. We have a message to deliver. Are we ready to do

    so?©LPi

No existimos

Apoyemos a nuestra comunidad

en todo lo que podemos en 2021.

Queremos tener una lista de familias

más actualizada. Tenemos muchas familias que no

están inscritas en nuestro censo parroquial.

Solamente aparecen 170 familias en la lista.

Queremos llegar a 300 familias inscritas.

THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD EL BAUTIZO DEL SENOR

Un vistazo a San Felipe esta semana... LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD DIARIA

    Cuando Dios Susurra

"No necesitas gritar.

amado!”) Realmente transmiten el mensaje. A veces

    Isaías advierte que Cristo mismo no será un alborotador;

necesita gritar. Nuestra audición espiritual funciona bien.

    Solo tenemos que estar escuchando.

Despertemos cada mañana listos para escuchar los

susurros de Dios durante el día. Hagamos un esfuerzo

    consciente para invitar esos

    susurros a nuestro corazón,

    donde puedan convertirse en un

catalizador de la gracia en este

    mundo.
