He showed me how a man should love a woman in the way he loved my mother, and he showed me Jesus with his tender heart. He cried his eyes out at "Father of the Bride" when I was twelve, but somehow held it together when he walked me down the aisle. That same arm held me steady nine years later when I became a young widow. He cried with me, organized my bills, and tried to talk me into buying a Cadillac, much like he did when he sent me off to college. He showed me what a great father looked like through his love and sacrifice for my brother and myself, and was the reason I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I wanted to raise children with Will, because I wanted my kids to grow up with a dad like mine. His great- est delight was with his grandchildren, and I pray for their little hearts when we tell them he is in heaven and won't be able to play with them anymore. Dad, I am so grateful God picked you to be my father. I promise you Lulu will grow up knowing how much you loved her. I hope your heaven is full of golf, sea- shells, bread, and guns. It is no wonder that he was always one of the first people I would call when I got a new toy, gadget, golf club, or car. I think he got more excited about it than I did. He was also passionate about loving his fami- ly. Growing up it was normal for us to get together frequently with Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. It wasn't until much later in life that I realized just how special this was and that other families only saw their cousins a few times per year. Uncle Den's passion for his family can be seen in how involved he was. He never missed an opportunity to go to school plays, kids’ performances, family birthday parties, and church activities, just to name a few. He was also passionate about his church family. He was an example of a strong Christian man to all he met. He was meekness personified. Great strength under great control with compassion for his fellow man. I only hope that I can instill in my own children the same great love of God and Family. Roy Staley Dr. Dennis Swain 1945 - 2016

Below are memories wrien this week from his children,

When You Don’t Like What God’s Word Says

Has there ever been a *me when you didn’t like

something God’s Word said? If so, what did you do? I cer-

tainly wouldn’t suggest you do what one-*me king of Ju-

dah, Jehoiakim, did.

21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and Jehudi

brought it from the room of Elishama the secretary and read it to

the king and all the officials standing beside him. 22

It was the

ninth month and the king was si$ng in the winter apartment,

with a fire burning in the firepot in front of him. 23

Whenever Je-

hudi had read three or four columns of the scroll, the king cut

them off with a scribe’s knife and threw them into the firepot,

unl the enre scroll was burned in the fire. 24

The king and all his

a,endants who heard all these words showed no fear, nor did

they tear their clothes.” as an indication of their repentance.

Jeremiah 36:21-24

Destroying the scroll didn’t accomplish anything.

32 So Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to the

scribe Baruch son of Neriah, and as Jeremiah dictated, Baruch

wrote on it all the words of the scroll that Jehoiakim king of Ju-

dah had burned in the fire. And many similar words were added

to them.” Jeremiah 36:32

GeHng angry at what God’s Word teaches harms no

one but the one who gets angry. Walter
