Dear Parishioners, A new year is upon us! I pray that 2017 be a year of great promise for the families of our parish. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who had a hand in helping to make our Christmas Masses so beau-tiful. A special thank you, too, to all those who provided the priests of the rectory with wonderful "goodies" to enjoy. May God bless you! Last week I wrote to you about an upcoming meeting of the Loudoun County School Board at which the board plans to vote on the school dis-trict's restroom/locker room policy. This meeting is scheduled for Tues-day, January 10, 2017, at 6:30pm at the school board meeting room on Education Court, here in Ashburn. I encourage you to contact the board and urge them to protect the privacy rights of all school children by voting "no" on the proposed changes to the "non-discrimination" policy. On Friday, January 13, 2017, Bishop Burbidge will be visiting Saint The-resa Parish to celebrate Mass at 7:00pm. This Mass will be for all parish-ioners of our deanery. It will be preceded by a meeting with priests of the deanery and followed by a reception. I hope many will be able to come out and greet our new bishop. I know that some of you had the oppor-tunity to meet Bishop Burbidge at Confirmation last month -- he enjoyed that opportunity to meet with so many of you. If anyone would like to volunteer to assist with the reception, I would ask you to contact the par-ish office and our planning committee will reach out to you. May God bless you!
How to Register to be a Parishioner of St. Theresa Often, in the sacramental life of the Church, Catholic faithful will need to prove residency in a parish. Registra-tion with the parish office allows us to track your sacra-mental data and keep you connected with the life of the
church. In order to register, come to the parish office Monday – Friday 9:30am – 4:30pm to fill out a registration card. Yellow registration cards can also be obtained at all of the Church entrances – these can be mailed to the par-ish or given to an usher during a church liturgy.

Adult Education and Spiritual Enrichment
Treasures From Our Tradition "Octave" comes from the Latin word for "eight," and since eight is one step beyond seven, the number of days in a week, it has long been seen as a symbol of perfection, completion, and new beginnings. Early Christians called Sunday the "eighth day," since it was the day after the Sabbath and
a day of resurrected life, the Lord's Day. By the seventh century, people regarded the eight days after Easter Sunday as one great day, an octave, one glorious feast when people were forbidden to fast or kneel. In the sev-enth century, Pentecost acquired an Octave, too. Christmas didn't claim the honor of a continuous feast, but it did get an Octave Day. January 1 is
the oldest Marian feast, the Octave of Christmas. It was originally a feast of the motherhood of Mary, although for centuries until 1969 it was called the Feast of the Circumcision. Our re-formed calendar follows the earlier tradition of celebrating Mary as Mother of God. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Masses for the Week
Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God Remember, Reflect, Respond This feast has had several names through history. Most recently, it was called the Feast of the Circumcision and then the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. The Church finally settled on a more ancient title, Mary, the Holy Mother of God. It also has a secondary title of the Octave of Christmas, the secular title of New Years Day, and an honorary title of World Day of Prayer for Peace. Strange-ly, the title that is most confusing to non-Catholics is the official one. When we call Mary the Mother of God, we are not saying that she somehow pre-ceded God or is equal to God. We are simply recognizing that her human son Jesus is also the divine Son of God. We honor Mary because God honored her by choosing her to be the mother of Jesus. In her humble response of "let it be done to me," she agreed to be part of God's plan for our salvation. And so to-day's Gospel records one simple action of Mary: to keep these things in her heart. Even in this simple sentence we are given a good example of being a disciple. Like Mary, we need to both keep, or remember, what God has done, and to reflect on what we remember. First, how much do we remem-ber about what God has done for us? How well do we know the stories of salvation found in the scriptures? How well do we know God's actions in Church history? And how much do we remember of the personal grac-es given us by God? Do we recall the prayers God has answered, the guidance given, the love of God that oth-ers have shown us, the times God has forgiven us? Second, how much do we reflect on what God has done? Even if we have many memories of God's goodness to us, we also need to pray over them and ask ourselves how we have changed because of what God has done. Am I more generous to others? Do I forgive hurts more readily? Do I share my faith with my family or friends? Do I support my parish with my time or offerings? Let us ask God's help to imitate Mary by remem-bering and reflecting.
