Dear Friends,

Happy New Year! I hope you are enjoying the wonders of the season. Today we celebrate Mary, Mother of God. In my lifetime, this holy day has been called three different names: The Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, World Day

of Peace, and the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. Since 1974, we have been celebrating the liturgical feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary on January 1st, which is the Octave day of Christmas.

Only Christmas and Easter enjoy the privilege of an octave, which is an eight-day extension of the feast. In 1974, Pope Paul VI removed the feast of the Circumcision of Christ from the liturgical calendar and replaced it with the feast of the “Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God”, bringing Mary’s feast day back to the first day of the year. The feast is a celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus. The title “Mother of God” is a western derivation from the Greek Theotokos, which means “God-bearer”. On this day, we are reminded of the role that the Blessed Virgin played in the plan of our salvation, and still plays today.

Through the Holy Spirit, God the Father prepared Mary to be the dwelling place where His Son and His Spirit could dwell among us. Christ’s birth was made possible by Mary’s fiat, or sanctioning of God’s plan with her words, “Let it be done to me according to thy word”. Calling Mary “Mother of God” is the highest honor we can give to her. Just as Christmas honors Jesus as the “Prince of Peace,” the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God honors Mary as the “Queen of Peace”. New Year’s Day is also designated as the “World Day of Peace”, further acknowledging the role of Mary in our hearts and in our world.

So we begin the New Year. We do so with Mary as our mother and as our Queen of Peace. Mothers teach their children how to live and how to love. I don’t think there can be a better teacher for us than Mary. What does she teach us? Mary, by her words and by her deeds shows us how to live as beloved children of God.

Today’s Gospel strikes me in a special way. My devotion to Mary has always been due to her relationship to the Father and to the Son. She immediately said yes to the Father and remained faithful to the Son throughout his whole life - even when he suffered and died – ultimately until the time he ascended into heaven. But today’s Gospel portrays the new mother welcoming the shepherds to meet the Christ child. Mary welcomed the shepherds - the smelly, poor, forgotten ones, the ones on the fringes – into her humble home. Our Mother teaches us, then, to welcome the poor into our hearts and into our lives. Mary reflected on God’s work in her life. In doing so, our mother teaches us. She teaches us to be aware of all that God does for us and to reflect on God’s goodness.

As we begin a new calendar year, let’s do so with Mary our mother, model and teacher. Let’s agree to welcome those on the fringes and be with those the rest of the world forgets. Let’s resolve to be aware of and reflect on God’s movement in our lives. When we do, it will be a Happy New Year!

Next week we celebrate the Epiphany, also known as “Three Kings Day.” It is a tradition in the Catholic Church to bless chalk at the Masses for the Epiphany and then use the chalk to bless the doorways in your home for the new year. As you leave Church next Sunday please be sure to take an envelope that contains an Epiphany blessing, a small piece of chalk and instructions on how to bless the doorways of your home. And be sure to look for these markings over the doorways at Church: 20 + C + M + B + 17.

HONOR HANDICAPPED PARKING SPACES

Handicapped parking spaces are located immediately in front of the church. Please be considerate and do not park in these reserved spots unless you have a special handicapped permit. This is especially important during the winter when the weather makes it difficult for those with disabilities to attend Mass.

USED SWEATER COLLECTION: JANUARY 29

Did Santa bring you a new sweater for Christmas? Do you have sweaters in good condition that could be handed down to someone in need? We will be collecting sweaters for adults and children the weekend of January 28-29. Bring your sweaters to any Mass that weekend – there will be containers in the vestibule for your hand-me-downs. Sweaters will be sorted the week of January 30 and delivered to Catholic Charities where they will be distributed to people in need of warm clothing. Thank you for planning ahead and setting aside sweaters for donation.

THE BLACK CHRIST OF ESQUIPULAS

Please join us as we celebrate the Solemn Feast in honor of the Black Christ of Esquipulas at the 11:30am Mass on Sunday, January 15th. The marimba Oxib Kajau will perform during the Mass. A simple reception will follow in the parish hall with tamales from Guatemala and more. The Black Christ of Esquipulas is an image of Jesus Crucified revered by millions of faithful in Central America that is in the Basilica of Esquipulas in the city of the same name in Guatemala.

REMEMBER OUR SUNDAY COLLECTIONS

This year Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on Sundays. Certainly we give generously on those days. At the same time we lose two regular Sundays of donations which affects our fiscal year. Please consider contributing your normal Sunday contributions in the envelopes provided or online in addition to your generous holiday offerings. This will help keep our budget on track.

This year’s Parish Spaghetti Dinner will be held on Saturday, January 7, in the Church Hall after the 5pm Mass. Get to know more

members of the parish at this popular event as your whole family enjoys a delicious meal of salad, garlic bread, pasta and meatballs.

Tickets can be purchased online or in the rectory during office hours and after weekend Masses. Buy your tickets before January 3 and

save! Tickets are $7 for Adults and $5 for Children (ages 4-12) and Seniors. Children 3 and under are free. Starting January 3 tickets will be $8 for Adults and $6 for Children and Seniors. Beer, wine

and pop will be sold separately throughout the evening.

RCIA RITE OF ACCEPTANCE/WELCOMING

Next Saturday (January 7) at the 5pm Mass we will welcome new members into our midst as the RCIA group celebrates the “Rite of Acceptance.” Briana Martin is preparing for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Caroline Manrique and Todd Bohnsack already share our Christian faith through baptism. They will celebrate the “Rite of Welcoming” as they mark this moment of following God’s call to live their Christian faith and complete their initiation within the Catholic community.

The rite includes our welcoming the candidates as they are announced into the Church. They are signed by the cross of Christ and affirm their intention to live under Christ’s cross. Their formation in God’s Word begins as the Word we hear proclaimed each week in our assembly is presented to them. You are important in this celebration and we ask that you welcome them into our midst, offer them support and share your faith with them!

To Teach Who Christ IsThanks to everyone who has been part of the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign, we have raised $715,475 as of December 21st. As the campaign wraps up please submit any outstanding pledge cards you might have. You are welcome to place them in the collection basket or turn them into the parish office.

¡Feliz Año Nuevo! Espero que estén disfrutando de las maravillas de la temporada. Hoy celebramos a María, Madre de Dios. En el curso de mi vida, este día santo ha sido llamado tres diferentes nombres: La Fiesta de la Circuncisión de Cristo, Día Mundial de la Paz

y la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios. Desde el año 1974 celebramos la fiesta litúrgica de la Santísima Virgen María el 1 de enero, que es Día Octavo de Navidad.

Sólo Navidad y Pascua gozan del privilegio de un octavo que es una extensión de ocho días de la fiesta. En 1974, el Papa Pablo VI quitó del calendario litúrgico la fiesta de la Circuncisión de Cristo sustituyéndola con la fiesta de la “Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios”, haciendo el día de la fiesta de María al primer día del año. La fiesta es una celebración de la maternidad de María de Jesús. El título “Madre de Dios” es una derivación occidental del griego Theotokos, que significa “portador de Dios”. En este día, se nos recuerda el papel que la Santísima Virgen desempeñó en el plan de nuestra salvación y todavía continua hoy.

Por medio del Espíritu Santo, Dios Padre preparó a María para que fuera la morada donde Su Hijo y Su Espíritu pudieran habitar entre nosotros. El nacimiento de Cristo fue posible gracias al mandato de María, o sanción del plan de Dios con sus palabras: “Hágase en mí según tu palabra”. Llamando a María “Madre de Dios” es el mayor honor que podemos darle. Así como la Navidad honra a Jesús como el “Príncipe de la Paz”, la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios, honra a María como la “Reina de la Paz”. El Día de Año Nuevo también se designa como “Día Mundial de la Paz”, reconociendo además el papel de María en nuestros corazones y en nuestro mundo.

Así que comenzamos el Año Nuevo. Lo hacemos con María como nuestra madre y como nuestra Reina de la Paz. Las madres enseñan a sus hijos cómo vivir y cómo amar. No creo que pueda haber un mejor ejemplo para nosotros que Maria. ¿Qué nos enseña? María, con sus palabras y con sus obras nos demuestra cómo vivir como amados hijos de Dios.

El Evangelio de hoy me sorprende de una manera especial. Mi devoción a María ha sido siempre debido a su relación con el Padre y con el Hijo. Ella inmediatamente dijo que sí al Padre y permaneció fiel al Hijo durante toda su vida - incluso cuando Él sufrió y murió – hasta el momento en que ascendió al cielo finalmente. Pero el Evangelio de hoy describe a la nueva madre dando la bienvenida a los pastores para conocer al Niño Jesús. María dio la bienvenida a los pastores - los malolientes, pobres, olvidados, los que estaban en los márgenes - en su humilde hogar. Nuestra Madre nos enseña entonces a dar la bienvenida a los pobres en nuestros corazones y en nuestras vidas. María reflexionó sobre la obra de Dios en su vida. Al hacerlo, nuestra madre nos enseña. Ella nos enseña a ser conscientes de todo lo que Dios hace por nosotros y a reflexionar sobre la bondad de Dios.

Al comenzar un nuevo año calendario, hagámoslo con María, nuestra madre, modelo y maestra. Unámonos en dar la bienvenida a los que están al margen y estar con aquellos que son olvidados por el resto del mundo. LA EPIFANÍA DEL SEÑOR

La próxima semana celebramos la Epifanía, también conocida como “Día de los Reyes Magos”. Es una tradición en la Iglesia Católica para bendecir la tiza en las Misas de la Epifanía y luego usar la tiza para bendecir las puertas de su hogar para el nuevo año. Al salir de la Iglesia el próximo domingo, asegúrese de llevar un sobre que contenga una bendición de la Epifanía, un pequeño pedazo de tiza e instrucciones sobre cómo bendecir las puertas de su hogar. Y asegúrese de buscar estas marcas sobre las puertas de la iglesia: 20 + C + M + B + 17.

ESPACIOS DE ESTACIONAMIENTO PARA DISCAPACITADOS

Hay tres lugares de estacionamiento en frente de la iglesia designados para las personas discapacitadas. Por favor sea considerado y no se estacione en estos lugares reservados a menos que tenga un permiso especial para discapacitados. EL CRISTO NEGRO DE ESQUIPULAS

Únase a nosotros el domingo 15 de enero en la Misa de las 11:30am mientras celebramos la solemne fiesta en honor del Cristo Negro de Esquipulas. La marimba Oxib Kajau se presentará durante la Misa. The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

The Feast of the Holy Family celebrates the human family unit, as well as the ultimate family unit: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The feast is usually celebrated on the Sunday after Christmas. The Holy Family is the name given to the family unit of Jesus: The Divine Son of God Jesus, his mother the Virgin Mary, and his foster-father Joseph. We know very little about the life of the Holy Family, but while the exact details of their day-to-day life may be unknown, we can still learn a lot from the stories we do have.

The Feast of the Holy Family is not just about the Holy Family, but about our own families too. The main purpose of the Feast is to present the Holy Family as the model for all Christian families, and for domestic life in general. This feast has been promoted as a way to counter the breakdown of the family unit.

Our family life becomes sanctified when we live the life of the Church within our homes. This is called the “domestic church” or the “church in miniature.” Just how does one live out the Church in the family? The best way is by making Christ the center of family and individual life.

Holy Family Society Banner HistorySome time ago, the Holy Family Society banner was installed at the left of the altar of St. John Berchmans after spending many years in the basement of the convent. The banner was donated by the Holy Family Society in 1936. The society was founded a couple of years before by Belgian priest, Father Philippe, who was briefly associated with St. John Berchmans church as an assistant pastor. In the mid-Thirties, the society had 300 members. The membership of the society was made up exclusively of Belgian women in Chicago. The banner is a Flemish tapestry handmade in Belgium and shipped here. At the top of the banner are the words “H. Familie” which is Flemish and the abbreviation of “Heilige Familie.” In English it means Holy Family. The words of Gent and Brugge are the names of two major Flemish cities in Belgium. They were the hometowns of many of the Belgian immigrants in Chicago before World War II. The society was officially disbanded in 1959.

Historia del Estandarte de la Sociedad de la Sagrada Familia

Hace algún tiempo, el estandarte de la Sociedad de la Santa Familia fue instalado a la izquierda del altar de San Juan Berchmans después de pasar muchos años en el sótano del convento. El estandarte fue donado por la Sociedad de la Sagrada Familia en 1936. La sociedad fue fundada un par de años antes por un sacerdote belga, el padre Philippe, que fue asociado brevemente con la iglesia de San Juan Berchmans como pastor auxiliar. Aid for Women March for Life Chicago Mass and Brunch

Join Aid for Women before March for Life Chicago as we come together to pray for the children who have lost their lives to abortion, for the healing of the women and men affected by abortion and for a society dedicated to protecting life. The event will be held on Sunday, January 15th at the Union League Club in downtown Chicago. We will begin with Mass, celebrated by Relevant Radio’s Father Francis “Rocky” Hoffman at 10:00 am. Brunch will begin at 11:00 am, and the keynote speaker is Kathryn Jean Lopez, Editor-at-Large for National Review Online. Those who are able will then proceed to the March for Life Chicago which begins at 2:00 pm at Federal Plaza. Tickets are $65 per person.
